Eddie Trotta's Camel Three
In the living room of the Trotta home in glitzy Fort Lauderdale, is a player piano—a baby grand—programmed to perform the classics, from Mingus to Mozart. Eddie just might be the man who put the chop in Chopin. He studied piano at the famous Berklee School of Music in Boston. From there he became involved in thoroughbred horse racing and, then, as a driver, off-shore powerboat racing—the sports of kings. How they were financed is a matter of some conjecture. Nonetheless, his digs, situated between a gated driveway and an inter-coastal canal, represent the epitome of Floridian fashion, replete with pastels and palm trees. Guarded by two hulking Presa Canario hounds, a Scarab speedboat is poised on a winch above the waterway adjacent to a backyard swimming pool, barbeque, and wet bar. A Ferrari Modena lurks in the garage. The only thing missing is Sonny Crockett sipping a Cuba Libre.
Trotta takes umbrage at any suggestion that long bikes originated in California. “I’m going back to the early sixties, as far as I can remember, and in Connecticut. My friend had a portable welding truck. We were in the backyard stretching frames.” Eddie was twelve or thirteen years old. His older brother Art had an old Knucklehead. “We stretched his frame different every year; raked the neck different every year.” By 1966 it was raked out to 53 degrees with a 20-over springer front suspension. The brothers knew nothing about steering geometry in those days. “We’d just cut the neck and jump up and down on it until it was almost level, and say okay, weld it up! Nowadays, we do measure rake and trail and stuff like that.”
[333|365] bike ride.
20 September 2008
It's our tradition to rent fun beach cruiser bikes and ride around the 8 mile circumference of the island together. I love this time, it's so relaxing to just take in the quiet nature and the soothing water.
I even had the only green bike! How cool is that?!?!
This was right after we stopped for fried dill pickles! They are SOO GOOD :)
