It is in the family Asteraceae and the genus Centaurea. There are many species of centaurea, but the most abundant ones as plants are Centaurea cyanus, Centaurea americana, and Centaurea montana. Eventhough a native of Europe, cornflower is fairly abundant in the United States. It is named cornflower because it grows wild in corn fields until the harvesting season begins. It is a seasonal plant that blooms during March to May. It is drought tolerant and grows in soil temperature of 60 to 70 F[10]. Unfortunately, it is endangered in its native habitat due to agricultural intensification.
