Terry Kurtenbach

Terry Kurtenbach

NOT CURTAINS YET FOR KURTENBACH

TEAM GB defender Terry Kurtenbach says his career has been given a fresh lease of life since he was ‘re-born’ as new player-coach at Rom Valley Way.

Out in the cold after seven years at Nottingham, 30-year-old Kurtenbach, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, feels confident that he put not only himself but Raiders on the right path.

After a certain amount of confusion in the wake of guru Gordon Jeffrey’s departure, Raiders are getting their act together.

Kurtenbach shared his promotion dream after Raiders recorded their eighth game without loss, convincingly beating the old enemy, Chelmsford Chieftains, 11-5 in the first leg of the Essex Cup. (Thursday Nov 30)

Both teams saw it an an opportunity to give their younger players some ice time, and the difference in the score line underlines the strength of the Raiders youth development programme - the up and coming Kurtenbach Kids.

It was the first match that saw former long-serving Raiders defender Sean McFadyen playing against them in Chieftains colours - but more of that later!

“It’s been a new kind of challenge - I had seven great years with Panthers, best playing years of my life, but I had been thinking about moving into coaching for a while.

At the end of season Nottingham decided to make some changes, they got some new imports in and they didn’t want me back.

I was maybe getting stale at Panthers and taking things for granted. Down here it’s like a new lease of life.”

Kurtenbach was contacted by Erskine Douglas and became a dual-national - so as well as picking up a British passport he was picked for the Romford hot seat.

“I’d played against Romford and I knew a few of the guys. It thought it was what I needed to jump start my career again, get it going and renew my interest.

Rob Stewart has really helped out a lot and we are kind of doing things together, making decisions and shaping the future.

Kurtenbach says he is enjoying it - so far.

“It’s far easier coming into a new situation when you turn to coaching. It’s like a new start for me and the guys are responding well and are really working hard. They WANT to win, and they have a lot of heart.”

Added responsibility bring with it added pressures and coaching has been a lot tougher than he anticipated.

“I’m coping, but it’s more work than I thought it would be, you are thinking about the team constantly and there are always things you have got to do.

“When I am out on the ice I can switch off and go out there and try to win. If one of the guys makes a mistake on ice and try and go over a have a quite word so hopefully they don’t make the same mistake again.

I’m fortunate to have good quality imports who set good examples to the other guys.”

When Kurtenbach come south he did not know exactly how much management responsibility he would be given.

“I thought I’d be running the team and that is how things have worked out with Erskine as club co-ordinator. He is also running the bench right now and he’s doing not a bad job.

Lenny Cole had been running the lines, but we have made a few changes. Erskine is starting to come round to the players and the players are starting to come round to him.”

As yet, Kurtenbach says he hasn’t had to make any hard decisions.

“Erskine does all that. He basically hired all the players and I have no say in who is hired or fired.

“Of course I tell him what Rob and I think - you know, which players we should keep, or that we don’t want to lose so and so. Erskine respects our hockey knowledge.”

Kurtenbach says he owes his shift towards coaching to former Panthers’ boss Alex Dampier, who brought him over from Brandon University, Manitoba, and is now his mentor with the GB squad.

“Alex came over to the UK as a player, then player-coaching and eventually coaching and I thought it was something I too would have to do down the road.

I originally came over to have a good time, to see England and travel around and I made it stick for eight years. We had a good bunch of guys at Nottingham and we all had a good laugh together.

The actual game is deadly serious as people pay to come and watch you so you have to do your job, but it’s a pretty relaxed atmosphere at Raiders and I am still having fun.

I wouldn’t ask anybody to do anything I could not do myself. I tell the guys to play hard and if we make a mistake, we make a mistake - big deal. We can work on it and hopefully we won’t make it again.

I just want the guys to work as hard as they can, that’s all I want, they have different levels of skills and I try to push them to get as much as I can.”

The main coaching lesson I have learned since taking over is that you have to be patient."

Kurtenbach goes on to explain the secret of Raiders' recent success.

“We’ve had the talent, but it has taken us a while to sort things out. We had a lot of areas to work on - defensive and offensive, penalty killing power playing. We’ve only got so many training sessions do improve ou

Terry Fox Memorial

Terry Fox Memorial

Designed by Douglas Coupland, the 4 bronize statues that make up the new Terry Fox Memorial were unveiled on Sept. 16, 2011 as a lasting memorial to a genuine Canadian hero. The first of the bronzes is life-size but each increases in size until the final one is twice life-size. It depicts Terry giving his familiar wave to Canadians who, touched by his bravery, would line his route as he passed through their communities. The statues face Stanley Park, which is where Terry was aiming to end his run. (Gerry Bellett, Vancouver Sun)

In the summer of 1980, a fresh-faced young athlete who’d lost a leg to cancer decided to run across Canada to raise money for research in the fight against the disease. In the course of 143 days, he ran 3,339 miles and transformed the way that we look at our country, our lives and our very bodies.” (From Douglas Coupland’s book, “Terry”)

Canadians witnessed his signature hop-skip gait as he ran a gruelling marathon-a-day, never waivering in his dedication and vision. He made it to Thunder Bay, ON before having to end his Marathon of Hope when the cancer spread to his lungs. He died in 1981 at age 23.

Terry's initial hope had been to raise $1-million. Two-and-a-half months after his death, the first Terry Fox Run was held on Sept. 13, 1981. More than 300,000 Canadians took part in the event at 760 sites across the country. That run raised $3.5 million.

In Sept. 2011, the 31st annual Terry Fox Run was held. So far, the event has raised $553 million for cancer research. And it has gone global. In 2008 alone, more than two million people in 28 countries took part in Terry Fox runs. Those locations included Afghanistan, Viet Nam, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Malaysia, France, Belgium and the United States.

Money raised through Terry Fox runs has gone to more than 1,100 research projects – some of the results include:
***Advances in imaging technology used worldwide.
***Increased life expectancy for men with advanced stage prostate cancer.
***The discovery of a new mutation that may lead to new treatments for lymphoma.
***Advances in early screening techniques that could potentially improve survival rates from lung cancer.
