Girls' Dormitory

• First Digital Edition
• Includes an Afterword on the history of pulp paperbacks

They came to college sweet, pretty and unsuspecting. But the house mother was strangely corrupt, and so was the caretaker.

Sure, Peggy was a sweet kid, and pretty, too—which was why she would have made out just fine at a co-ed college. But Peggy had strange fears, disturbing inclinations; she preferred to go to an all-girls’ school, where she could live in an all-girls’ dormitory. It was a forgone conclusion that Helen Lee, an older dorm mate, would be able to seduce Peggy into behavior unbecoming such a sweet, young thing. After all, Helen had been initiated, like so many college girls, by the house mother herself. But, Helen also was carrying on with a man—and the man, Jerry Dixon, found himself fascinated by Peggy. Tragedy suddenly threatened the gay dormitory, to be resolved in an explosive climax promising fulfillment of girlish aspirations!

About Lesbian Pulp Fiction:

A new revolution was underway at the start of the 1940s in America—a paperback revolution that would change the way publishers would produce and distribute books and the reading public would consume them. In 1939 a new publishing company—Pocket Books—stormed onto the scene with the publication of its first paperbound book. Unlike hardback books, these pulp paperbacks were inexpensive and readily available everywhere. The American public could not get enough of them.

During the 1940s, mysteries and romances were the hot sellers. In the early 1950s, new pulp fiction subgenres emerged—science fiction, westerns, gay & lesbian fiction, juvenile delinquent and “sleaze”, for instance—that would tantalize readers with gritty, realistic and lurid stories never seen before. Publishers soon came to realize that sex sells. In a competitive frenzy for readers, they turned from straightforward "tasteful" cover images to alluring covers that frequently featured a sexy woman in some form of undress, along with a suggestive tag line that promised stories of sex and violence within the covers. To this day, the pulp cover art of these vintage paperback books is just as sought after as the books themselves were sixty years ago.

We are excited to make these wonderful pulp fiction stories available in ebook format to new generations of readers, as a new revolution—the ebook revolution—is in full swing. We hope you will enjoy this nostalgic look back at a period in American history when dames were dangerous, tough-guys were deadly and dolls were downright delicious.

I almost never post two photographs of the same subject matter taken on the same day. I tend to take the Talking Heads approach to this: "Say something once, why say it again?" But after I took the shot I've already posted, I looked in a different window and through the 50-year old window screen I could make out these lovely old porcelain bowls and cups. Happily, there was a tear in the screen that allowed me to put the lens up against the window.

But I shot both photos blind. Most of the windows in the dormitory had torn screens, but not in easily accessible places--which meant I couldn't use the viewfinder to compose the frame. Still, it worked out.

Found this old dormitory on the state fairground. It was originally in use from the late 1930s to the mid 1940s. They apparently still use it on occasion. There were thin mattresses rolled up in plastic, but the beds themselves...and the springs...look like they're original.

Blue Eyed Samurai - 1000 days in the Young Lions Dormitory

The last uchi deshi (live-in student) of Sosai Oyama Masutatsu, Nicholas Pettas, takes you along on his adventure as an eager, 18-year-old boy going from Copenhagen, Denmark to the other side of the globe. Here, in Tokyo, Japan, he doesn't just find himself in another country, but in a different world altogether.

The rigorous life of an uchi deshi is filled with drama and the struggle to survive. Even more so for a Western uchi deshi, thrown into an environment where everything is different – the food, the language, the life-style and, above all, the karate. Literally having to fight for his survival on a daily basis, Nicholas turns to his inner self to search for the strength needed to fulfil his dream of completing the daunting 1000-day karate course.

Becoming a true lion in the art and sport of karate, and the last non-Japanese to complete Master Oyama's course, today, author Nicholas Pettas is known in Japan as “The Blue-eyed Samurai”, an acknowledgment of his true Samurai Spirit.
