Modern refrigerators generally make use of the cooling effect produced when a volatile liquid is forced to evaporate in a sealed system in which it can be condensed back to liquid outside the refrigerator

  • white goods in which food can be stored at low temperatures

  • A refrigerator is a cooling apparatus. The common household appliance (often called a "fridge" for short) comprises a thermally insulated compartment and a heat pump—chemical or mechanical means—to transfer heat from it to the external environment (i.e.

the recycling center?

the recycling center?

California likes to think of itself as one of the most advanced,
progressive and environmentally conscious states in the country. So,
it is not surprising that they, like many other states including New
York, add a 5 to 10 cent recycling deposit to beverage containers.
So.... say you as a consumer in these states would like to reclaim
this deposit by recycling your containers. In New York, you go to any
nearby grocery store and find inside (or rarely, outside) several
refrigerator-sized machines waiting for you to insert, one at a time
your glass, plastic or aluminum containers. The machine scans the
barcode on the container to check that a deposit was collected on that
beverage, then proceeds to crush or shred the container and wait for
the insertion of the next one. When you're finished, you press a
button and the machine prints a voucher for you to bring to the
cashier in the store to claim your refund.

In California, you go to specific grocery stores... where in the
parking lot behind the store you will find a walk-in dumpster
containing thousands of recyclable containers, a scale, some
disgustingly dirty garbage cans, and an attendant. These dumpsters
smell just as bad as any dumpster could possibly smell.... but they
are painted and decorated to look "friendly". Make sure you come on a
day (and during the hours) that the "recycling center" is open....
these hours are completely unrelated to the the supermarket's hours.
Next you stand in line behind tens of people with enormous amounts of
recyclables who are trying to earn their living by collecting the
refund, and wait 30 to 45 minutes until it is your turn. Then, the
dumpster attendant hands you several of the slimy garbage cans, in
which you are expected to sort your recyclables by material. He weighs
each can, records the weight, and then uses a tiny trash compacter to
crush the cans and plastic goods. He'll also dump the glass bottles
into a separate compartment of his dumpster-hut. When finished, he
will talk over to a notebook, record his intake, and punch the numbers
into a modified credit card terminal. A receipt is printed, and you
are presented a dirty pen with which to sign and print your name on
it. The attendant staples this receipt to his log book, and another
one is printed out which he then initials. Now you can bring this
receipt into the supermarket and get paid for your efforts.

Reason number 392 that I hate California and miss New York.
