Shane Victorino: The Flyin' Hawaiian

Long before Shane Victorino gained fame as a Gold Glove center fielder, All-Star, and World Series champion with the Philadelphia Phillies, he was a precocious child on the island of Maui, frustrating teachers with his inability to sit still and tagging along with his older brother to neighborhood ballfields. Diagnosed at an early age with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, sports became an ideal outlet for Victorino s boundless energy.
Never the biggest or strongest kid in school, Victorino was surprised when offers to play college and professional sports poured in during his high school years. Eventually he decided to cast his lot with baseball, signing a contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization and crisscrossing the country on buses while playing for minor league teams in Montana, Washington, North Carolina, Florida, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. Trying to control a disorder that impaired his ability to stay mentally focused with the comforts of family and home an ocean away, Shane s willingness to continue pursuing his dream was the ultimate test of his resolve.
When his career prospects looked most bleak, the Phillies offered what was likely his last realistic shot at making it in the big leagues. Embracing the Rocky Balboa spirit of the town in which he played, the undersized underdog from Hawaii made the most of the opportunity. As the first Maui native ever to appear in a World Series, the Flyin Hawaiian played an integral role in giving his team and the city of Philadelphia a memory for the ages.

It kills me that this shot didn't come out crisply, but oh well. This is Shane Victorino (aka "The Flyin' Hawaiian"), one of the reasons why this championship came to this town. He set a team post-season record with 13 RBIs in the playoffs, including a grand slam off of C.C. Sabathia in Game 2 of the first round vs.the Milwaukee Brewers. (Sabathia was just dominant over the opposition for the last half of the season after the Brewers acquired him.) He was certainly having a blast like the rest of us!

Roc City Roller Derby home season ending bout for 2011, Bash Of The Titans!

The 5-H8-5 faced off against a team composed of stars from teams all over the region, while the Midtown Maulers challenged the Rottenchesters for the season title.

In the end, the 5-H8-5 edged out the regionals 105-104, while the Rottenchesters took home the season championship 96-73.
