Strut Repair 1
Some time ago I posted images of my youngest son doing some major work on his car. As it turns out, my oldest is in the same “more talent than money” boat. His fiance’s 1993 Buick needed new struts because the original ones were leaking. A strut repair job runs $450+ which was outside their budget so out came the service manual followed by a trip to the parts store.
It turns out that there are a couple ways to do this. One approach is to buy the entire assembly (cylinder, spring, etc) and simply replace the old with the new. This is the safest approach because dealing with the spring can be hazardous. A less costly approach is to replace only the cylinder BUT this involves utilizing a “spring compressor” to safely remove the spring tension. This is ultimately the approach selected for this job.
One final observation, his fiance got right in there helping out which was reminiscent of our younger days when we tackled projects around the house…..
