Corporal Philip Hinds (Alexandra Hills, Brisbane, Qld) is the crew commander in call sign 'Two-One Bravo', an ASLAV-25 with the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, during Exercise Talisman Sabre 2011.

Mid-caption: On the eve of the final ‘battle’ of Exercise Talisman Sabre 2011, an Australian Army cavalry troop took time out to regroup, conduct maintenance checks and prepare their vehicles for what lay ahead.

The troop of Australian Light Armoured Vehicles (ASLAVs) were from B Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, based at Robertson Barracks in Darwin. The 2nd Cavalry Regiment is part of 1st Brigade, the Australian Army’s light armoured brigade.

Call sign ‘Two-One Bravo’, a three-crew ASLAV–25, showed a military camera team over the vehicle, pointing out its features and explaining what role each crew member performs. The crew of Two-One Bravo comprises: Corporal Philip Hinds (Alexandra Hills, Brisbane, Qld) is the crew commander, Trooper William Church (Wyong, NSW) is the gunner and Trooper Billy Walsh (Ferny Grove, Brisbane, Qld) is the driver.

The ASLAV is a highly mobile, eight-wheeled amphibious fighting vehicle used by the Australian Army for reconnaissance and surveillance operations. It weighs 13.2 tonnes, has an overall length of 6.5 metres, a top speed of 100 km/h and an operational range of 660 km.
The ASLAV–25 (one of several variants) is a reconnaissance vehicle fitted with an M242 dual-feed 25 mm Bushmaster cannon, two 7.62 mm MAG 58 machine guns and dual grenade launchers.

Exercise Talisman Sabre (11–29 July 2011) is a major bilateral exercise designed to train Australian and United States forces in planning and conducting combined operations across the full spectrum of military full spectrum of military operations from conventional conflict to peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance in order to improve Australian–US combat readiness and interoperability.
