My rear inner tube gave up the ghost a mile after I left the motel.

Turned out to indicate perfectly what else the day had in store.

I ended up arriving in Rockford late after having the rear wheel replaced in Freeport. The trail route dumped me into a bad neighborhood. It was dark and getting darker. I had no motel room and stopped by the side of the road to look for a place with my cell phone when a hooker drove up to me to see if I needed anything. It is probably a good thing that I didn't tell her I needed a motel room.

I took off on my bike in a panic to get out of there. A dog then chased me, barking and threatening to bite. It caught up with me and I could feel it graze my leg.

After the dog, I rode around in a panic not sure where I was going. I forced myself to calm down, stop and get my bearings. The GPS located me a motel room and guided me to it, though I had to drive through heavy traffic in the dark, a harrowing ride.

I am now safe albeit in the most run down motel I've stayed in in many a year. My bathroom light flickers on and off at random.

At least I've got the rear wheel situation sorted!

SCL heavy Bucyrus Erie wrecker crane # 771254 (stenciled Wildwood), is seen in a rear view while sitting on a siding at the railroad yard in Wildwood, Florida, mid 1970's. It appears that this old railroad crane is still operated by steam power at this time. It also appears that the old plain journal bearings in the crane's Buckeye trucks have been replaced with roller bearings. Behind the crane is a flat car with ties and sections of railr to laid out at a damaged rail site. In front of the crane is another flat car with wheel and axle set and trucks to be used at a wreck scene. Other assorted wrecker train cars are on hand in the yard, tank cars with fuel oil and water, goldolas, work train box cars and heavyweight crew cars. This railroad yard location was previously owned and operated by the SAL prior to the 1967 merger.
