A celebrated book on the subject of aeronautics, this ground school manual for pilots was originally written for the training of pilots in the Commonwealth during World War II. This is RAF 754918 Sgt. Thomas Weir who was killed when his Miles Master I Serial No. N7477 training plane 'dived to ground' on the 9th of June 1940 at Hollybush, North Wales, UK. Thomas was stationed, at the time of his death, at No. 5 F.T.S., RAF Sealand. He is buried in the churchyard in Stane, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He may have lived previously at 203 Niddrie Mains Road , Edinburgh as my mother, who knew him, had written that address on the back of the photo along with the date and place of the accident. He wrote my mother an interesting, and of course rather sad, letter arranging a meeting, four days before his death. Apparently some people in the area had thought the dead pilot was American. I presume he was Scottish, but don't know for sure.

A pretty important part of flying, as was emphasised by the fact that it took me three attempts to get off the ground on my first flight as a licensed pilot today. Once I was off the ground though, I soared right up to the base of the clouds and didn't come back to earth for 2 hours. Tomorrow I hope to do something similar, but with my camera hitching a ride too...
