This is the grave in Dudley of Manchester United football legend Duncan Edwards (1st October 1936 – 21st February 1958). Duncan Edwards was born in Dudley, and was buried there after his untimely death.

One of the 'Busby Babes', Duncan Edwards became one of eight young and promising players to die as a result of the Munich Air Disaster which occurred on 6th February 1958. The flight carrying the team, British European Airways Flight 609 crashed on its third attempt to take off from a slush-covered runway at Munich-Riem Airport in Munich, West Germany.

Manchester United were returning home after drawing 3–3 away to Red Star Belgrade to progress to the semi-finals of the European Cup by an aggregate score of 5–4. The aircraft had refuelled in Munich.

Duncan Edwards died of kidney failure on 21 February 1958, and was buried in Dudley cemetery. More than 5,000 people lined the streets of Dudley as the cortege passed through the town.

The inscription on the grave reads as follows:

A day of memory sad to recall
Without farewell he left us all
In loving memory
Of our dear son
Duncan Edwards
Who died Feb 21st 1958
From injuries received
In an air crash at Munich
Aged 21 years.

At this shrine of reward and rest
Memory honours those we love best.

Even today, as you can see Duncan Edwards is fondly remembered and his grave is permanently covered with red, white and black flowers, Manchester United scarves, letters and poems.

JAT Airways Boeing 737-3H9 YU-ANK is on short final for runway 25L.

c/n 23715 has has its first flight on 12.11.86 and was delivered to JAT on 26.11.87. It was wet-leased to Constellation International from March to June 1996. The name was changed to JAT Airways in March 2003. It was leased to Cameroon Airlines from September 2005 to 27.10.05.
