Dryden Flight Research Center: Webster's Image and Photographic History, 1949 to 2005

Dryden Flight Research Center: Webster's Image and Photographic History, 1949 to 2005

This book represents an image and photographic history dedicated to "Dryden Flight Research Center," whether used as a family or geographic name. Images cover the period from 1949 to 2005. It is a historical compilation from a variety of sources with a linguistic emphasis on any image relating to the name "Dryden Flight Research Center," including alternative meanings and inflections which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (family name, geographic name, etc.) as well as use in modern culture, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, the military, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, and other physical sciences. This selection process results in many unexpected entries for a image collection dedicated to the name Dryden Flight Research Center, since editorial decisions to include or exclude images is purely a linguistic process. The dating of the images is either the year taken, the year published, or a numerical value found in the title or credit (e.g. the sorting by years may not be related to the years when the images were originally produced). Original image orientation is generally used. The images are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. Some images have not been cropped, to retain margin information, and/or to show original condition. Proceeds from this book are used to expand the content and coverage of Webster's Online Dictionary (www.websters-online-dictionary.org).

Blackbird

Blackbird

"Blackbird singing in the dead of night. . ." I was lucky enough to see NASA's two SR-71 Blackbirds while taking a tour of Dryden Flight Research Center, near Edwards Air Force Base, CA. The plane used to be used for high altitude reconnaissance, but it is now a bit obsolete. NASA still uses them for high altitude atmospheric research. It is very expensive to fly because it leaks fuel like a seive before takeoff, since there are gaps in it's fuselage. It is designed this way so that the plates of its fuselage will expand and "seal" the plane when it is heated due to travelling at high speeds. I think this plane still holds the world record for fastest (declassified) speed for an atmospheric flight.

Towers Of the Goddard Space Flight Center

These three towers are on property owned by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center just south of where I had my fall bird count today. I got 53 species of birds. My best was a Wilson Warbler which I do not often see in Maryland. Abandon Airport at Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, Maryland.

Fifty Years of Flight Research: An Annotated Bibliography of Technical Publications of NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, 1946-1996

An essential reference for those interested in the history of advanced aviation, special aircraft, and secret projects. Titles, authors, report numbers, and abstracts are given for more than 2200 unclassified and unrestricted technical reports and papers published from September 1946 to December 1996 by NASA Dryden Flight Research Center and its predecessor organizations. These technical reports and papers describe and give the results of 50 years of flight research performed by the NACA and NASA, from the X-1 and other early X-airplanes, to the X-15, Space Shuttle, X-29 Forward Swept Wing, and X-31 aircraft. Some of the other research airplanes tested were the D-558, phase 1 and 2; M-2, HL-10 and X-24 lifting bodies; Digital Fly-By-Wire and Supercritical Wing F-8; XB-70; YF-12; AFTI F-111 TACT and MAW; F-15 HiDEC; F-18 High Alpha Research Vehicle, and F-18 Systems Research Aircraft. The citations of reports and papers are listed in chronological order, with author and aircraft indices. In addition, in the appendices, citations of 233 contractor reports, more than 200 UCLA Flight System Research Center reports and 25 video tapes are included.
