Here is my firs tinstallment of Norrey.. my story for NANO 2005. Hopefully the momentum continues.

NORREY

"Good morning Mrs.. Easter Rydell. How are you today? Lovely flowers you?re working on there."

"Thank you, child. Good morning to you. Huns, where you off to so late? " Mrs.. Easter Rydell?s high pitched voice totally clashed with her oversized mass. Her floppy garden hat, red and bright as the flowers she dug around, was covered in plastic cherries. Her matching house coat added to her comic appearance. She dressed in theme. Everyday a new production starring Easter Rydell, directed by Easter Rydell. Today must be cherry day. Norrey smiled.

"well, I?m off to the college. New quarter starts soon and I?ve got to check my class schedules. You know how that is Mrs.. Easter Rydell. Always something new to do. How are your blossoms? The snap in the air last night didn?t damage them did it?"

"Heavens no , child. You know I?m particular ?bout my blossoms. I just turned up the heating lamps a bit." Her wide smile was contagious; Norrey couldn?t help but reciprocate.

"Goodbye, Mrs. Easter Rydell."

"Bye, deary." Her last words were lost as she turned her wide bulk towards her precious flowers. She huffed, hefted the hem of her house coat and bent to grab out some weed or offending critter attacking her beloved flowers. The woman was truly obsessed with flora and fauna. If she had had any children, Norrey was sure that each one would have been named some type of bloom or flowering bush.

After dumping the garbage bag into the curbside can, she clicked her way to the back of her beat up old buggy. It was a shame; some of her non-working students drove better cars than this. Norrey?s lips curled in disgust. She sighed, walked around the back end of the old Buick and climbed in.

Norrey rolled down the window, manually and watched Mrs.. Easter Rydell. Her fat bottom, straining the white cotton and cherries to excess. "Have a nice day!"

"Bye, deary." A flabby arm and white work glove flounced about like some wild turkey neck beating its way through the world. The absurdity of the scene struck Norrey and added a high note to her day. As she pulled from the curb, I?ll have to use that some how. Good ole Mrs.. Rydell.

Autumn was her favorite time. Children seemed more subdued. They rode their bikes and jacket tails flipped behind them. Their yells and chirps were muted by the leaves falling to streets and sidewalks below. Bright red and yellow foliage parted and swept itself up like flat birds as the bike tires raced through the mounds. All the hard work by old men hiding from their nagging wives and trying to avoid killing themselves or teen aged boys trying to make a few bucks before that nights revels or trying to pick up a few of the loose freshman girls down at the college was dashed, scattered literally in the wind. The leaves strewn around only to provide the same men with more work later; work that would be another excuse to live another day and remain sane. It was sad in a way; you could see the tan of summer start to fade as winter?s fingers started to stretch its icy hands. However, autumn still enthralled Norrey. the decorations, the colors, the eccentricities of her neighbors and the
county burst through in the mild season.

Some of the early birds had already put up fall decorations. Mrs.. Lil, a block down from her own apartment, had gone all out. Every year, on August 30, she goes about bedecking her whole front yard in autumnal plastic. On the left hand side of her property, a line of whirly gigs shaped like turkeys spin their plastic wings. Along the wrought iron posts of the front fence she wraps yards and yards of plastic fruit and greenery. It is the gaudiest thing in the neighborhood, yet Mrs.. Lil refuses to buy any of the more modern silk greenery or fruit. No, instead she plasters the same garland she?s had since 1965 along that poor fence, missing posts and all. Her entire front porch blazes with orange and white Christmas lights. She must have 200 strands wrapped and twisted around poles and doorjambs. On one side of her yard, a miniature gazebo sporting matching decorations sits vying for a pedestrian?s eye. The right side of her yard is reserved specifically for the seasonal holidays. It
was like some outdoor shrine to holiday gods. Turkeys, memorial stones, tombstones and bats, you name the holiday be sure Ms. Lil has some gaudy resin honorific stabbed into her front lawn for it. How she does it? Who knows. It?s like magic. Little worker gnomes must come out from underneath her stoop and spend the night nailing and planting and painting.

Norrey startled herself with the high cackle that escaped her lips in the silence of her car. A quick flash of Mrs. Easter Rydell bent over weather-stricken flowers and her wide butt flashing the neighborhood. Her chunky thighs and rolled down knee stockings wel

Dreaded coil basket (or bowl)!

this one is a spring fling with beautiful color transitions (fotos taken in natural lighting but still the computer screen doesnt do justice)

The dreads were felted from local wool, hand dyed, and carefully coiled up with turquoise wool thread.

Great for year around decoration in the house. Keep it on your night stand and put your glasses in it before you rest your eyes with no fear for scratches. Keep it in the community room to place odds and ends like lost keys or controllers. Makes a good cell phone bed too while its charging and you wont loose it.

The basket in the picture is 4 cm deep and 15 cm wide. The colors range between tangerine, lemon yellow and fuchsia. The yarn is turquoise.
