Every Room Tells a Story: Tales from the Pages of Nest Magazine

Every Room Tells a Story: Tales from the Pages of Nest Magazine

Description: Every Room Tells a Story offers the most interesting and provocative interiors published to date in the first 12 issues of the widely acclaimed interiors and design magazine, nest. Called, among other things, "Homes and Gardens for the decadent and deranged" (Wallpaper), the special chemistry of nest brings it all under one roof: not only David Mlinaric's interiors for the Rothschild home at Waddesdon Manor, Gabhan O'Keeffe's redecoration of Sao Schlumberger's Paris apartment, a recreation of Louis Comfort Tiffany's lost designs for the White House Blue Room, but also an Inuit igloo, the tents of Tibetan nomads, a U.S. Navy nuclear submarine, and women's prison cells. And because process is as interesting as result, Editor in Chief and Art Director Joseph Holtzman takes readers behind the scenes and shares the way his unique features are hatched and achieve adulthood. The book includes photography and text by more than 50 of the magazine's contributors, as well as examples of specially commissioned design projects: a flipbook by Matt Groening, a flocked wallpaper by Rosemarie Trockel, a chair by Tom Sachs, and a textile by Todd Oldham. Every Room Tells a Story will be a must for all fans of the magazine, and will also introduce its one-of-a-kind sensibility to the uninitiated.

Rose Main Reading Room

Rose Main Reading Room

The Humanities and Social Science Library of the New York Public Library occupies a two-block site between 40th and 42nd streets at Fifth Avenue. Opened in 1911, designed by Carrere and Hastings, the exterior is comprised of 20,000 blocks of stone - the library is entirely marble (in some places 3 feet thick) and is currently undergoing restoration that began in 2007.

The museum is a heaven of richly carved and decorated interior spaces, grand staircases and of course, thousands of books including many rare prints and artifacts.

"The famous main reading room of the library is a majestic 78 feet (23.8 m) wide by 297 feet (90.5 m) long. The room is lined with thousands of reference books on open shelves along the floor level and along the balcony, lit by massive windows and grand chandeliers, and furnished with sturdy wood tables, comfortable chairs, and brass lamps." - Wikipedia

Behold--Shelves!

Behold--Shelves!

No longer theoretical, but actual fact. Eight feet tall, fourteen shelves--I want to add a fifteenth at the top right. My flat is looking somewhat less cluttered now that I've got a place to put all the stacks of books, and all the videos I hadn't yet unpacked. Somewhat. There's still a fair amount left; must finish painting the Tim Burton-esque shelves, too. That, plus the two smaller shelving units in the main room (already crammed with books), should hold me for a while.
