Found: To me this is a metaphor in stone and across time. A metaphor in language is a figurative way of speaking where we say one thing is another thing.

As I worked on this piece to develop a watercolor technique, I kept seeing it in a fascinating way -- like my mind playing tricks on me: I kept seeing this as a translucent barrier between me and the other guy -- the guy who's hand this is. It was as if we were both standing in a cave. In his cave on the other side of this wall, there is a fire roaring away as he chips around his hand. Like seeing a hand through a block of frosted ice, only amber-colored. This is the only evidence I have that on the other side stands a man. We are separated by a wall of stone and the immensity of time.

And then, I begin to think of humanity. This species of mine that is rapidly filling in the niches of our world. I remember the wise man who boiled all the laws down to just two, love God, and love one another.

In my world on this side of the stone, we are having a hard time. The differences between us are too much for us to handle. We take exception to each other, when we should be able to take acception of one another despite all differences. We lose our heads over the differences and tempers flare. Other men step in and for a price are willing to "help us" to anhilate the other if we would only purchase their "arms." Enough already! Stop wars, simply by stopping our part in them. Come home where we belong.

If where I stand in this cave, suddenly the ceiling should come crashing down upon my head and shoulders, and beat me to the ground, I would call out for help. If a hand like this in this petroglyph came out of the darkness to find mine, I would know it as a man, instantly. The four fingers and a thumb, the grasp so familiar would tell me that it is someone of my own kind. The hand would pull me from the debris, we would hug, perhaps cry and laugh, and together we would walk out into the light of day. No one asks about the color of skin, the languages that we speak, the lands that we come from. Poor or rich, station-in-life, or political persuasion are all insignificant stuff. But wiill we who have come so far together, suddenly turn and kill each other when we discover the differences of our religion??

We are going down that road right now. Turn back. Go home. Peace is for the tough guys. You want to be tough? Make peace. It's the toughest thing you will ever do. Go ahead be a tough guy. Admit a mistake and go home. If your religions are driving you to clash farther on up the road, how true can those religions be? Peace should be the test of true faith: Love God, love one another? Each man must find God on their own. And if you can't get along with others, well then, just get along without them. That's what the tough guys should do. That's what the good guys would do. Peace and Thanksgiving for you all, my Brothers and Sisters of the Ancient Order of the Four Fingers and a Thumb!

The centerpiece is the finishing touch, unfortunately it is usually the first thing to be removed because it is in the way of the dinner table conversations. The one thing I love about this basket is it is not to tall, you can see the person on the other side of the table without the centerpiece getting in the way. So enjoy your beautiful Thanksgiving table from beginning to end. Everything in the basket is artificial and should last for several years.
