About the organisations: STEP-IJsselstein is a local foundation (NGO) for international youth activities. STEP co-operates with several organisations for welfare work and assists them in organising international projects. Main co-operation is with V.V.S.O. WVT in Bilthoven, an organisation for (social) welfare work with a range of activities for toddlers (2 playgroups), children, teenagers, young persons, adults and elderly people living in Bilthoven. This organisation provides educational, recreational, cultural and sportive facilities in addition to tutoring services and prevention activities. More information on V.V.S.O. WVT can be found on the Internet: http://www.vvsowvt.nl/ (in Dutch only, but you can use an online programme like f.e. http://babelfish.altavista.com/ to get a general translation of the homepage and get a basic idea about the activities)

Communities: Bilthoven (De Bilt) is a big village east of the city of Utrecht. Although Bilthoven itself is not very interesting, the nature around the village offers a lot of recreational opportunities. In the nearby town of Utrecht you can find lots of pubs, theatres, cinemas, musea and shops as well as the central railway station from where it is very easy to reach other major cities in Holland (for example: Amsterdam is 20 minutes by train). IJsselstein is a small town situated in the centre of Holland, 15 km south of Utrecht, alongside highway A12. With its small mediaeval centre, lots of facilities for sports, recreation, culture etc. it’s a good place to work and live. At this moment IJsselstein is growing rapidly from 25.000 to 35.000 inhabitants. There is a mix of ethnic communities. More information about the town can be found on the Internet: http://www.ijsselstein.net

Options: EVS for a period of 6 – 10 months, preferably starting in August.

Motivation: The people visiting the activities and projects have a lot of different cultural and social backgrounds. Many activities and projects are based on the work of volunteers. Therefore intercultural learning and volunteers play a central and important role. In our daily work and in the European “Youth” programmes we saw the importance of meeting people from different countries / cultures and the exchange of skills, information, etc. Our organisation wishes to offer an opportunity to young people from other countries to participate in the development of the work with people in a multicultural setting. With a youth-exchange young people can learn about other cultures and “step” over boundaries. With EVS, the volunteers, the organisations and the participants in activities can benefit from mutual skills and knowledge.

Objectives for EVS: The project offers an opportunity to work with various age-groups in Bilthoven. General aims are: - avoid social exclusion and improve learning abilities and creative skills. -Provide recreational facilities in addition to tutoring services and prevention activities. - Offer various groups a large variety of leisure - time - activities. Projects and activities will be done in co-operation with V.V.S.O. WVT. Project period is normally 6 months, but can be extended up to ten months. Start of the project: July or August 1st 2006.

Means: The work will be done in several township-centres in Bilthoven. The volunteer will participate in the playgroups, the child-activities and the youth work. The volunteer will assist with the care, accompaniment and animation of children and youngsters in several age groups. He / she will participate in the preparation (including the publicity), the implementation and evaluation of the activities and projects, such as: playgroup-activities (toddlers); creative afternoons for children; cultural events (dance, theatre / drama); disco- (once a month) and club-activities (for children and teens), outdoor and sport bus-activities for children in several neighbourhoods, and youth initiative groups, assisting in providing meals for 60 elderly people (once a month), summer camp for 380 kids (once a year).
Other examples of activities organised by V.V.S.O. WVT are: judo, jiu-jitsu, karate, self-defence for girls, tennis, language trainings, computer courses, country-line dance, jazz-dance for various age-groups, body shape, yoga, cooking lessons, cartoon-drawing and painting for kids, “koersbal” (indoor sport) for elderly people, art-exhibitions, bike-events, advise sessions on taxes, law, forms, employment and notary issues, homework-support, political evenings, intermediate between neighbourhood, municipality and housing-co operations.

Selection: The volunteer has to be able to work with different age groups. We expect a certain amount of flexibility and creativity, an open attitude and capacity to integrate in the team, a good motivation to learn from experiences, to be open for evaluation and feed-back, taking initiatives while planning activities and show interest in the living conditions of people we are working with.

Lodging: The volunteer will be hosted by a family in IJsselstein or Bilthoven.

Board: The volunteer will receive a food allowance and prepare his / her meals himself / herself or will eat with the family.

Linguistic support: linguistic training will be given once a week ca. 2 hours, in a small group together with au-pairs from various countries.

Personal support: during the voluntary project, on-going training and personal support of the volunteer will be provided. Every two weeks there will be a session to talk about the developments. Furthermore she / he can take part in training activities organised by the organisation. An On-Arrival meeting will be organised by the EVS national structure.
