Standard Shapes of Pearls

Pearl-Necklace

Pearl Necklace has long since regarded as the best among pearl jewellery. Since the dawn of human civilization, pearls have been considered as a sacred gem. They have been used in almost every major civilization and still regarded as one of the best gifts that money can buy. Many companies have supplied pearl jewellery to the world over the years. Otomo Pearl’s is one of them, an item from Otomo means guaranteed satisfaction.

One of the most important characteristics that determine the value of a pearl is the shape. Actually, the shape of a pearl depends completely on the nucleus or the irritant that has caused the formation of the pearl after entering the body of an oyster. However, jewellers consider three structure as the standard when it comes to pearls. Round, symmetrical and the final one is the baroque.

Round pearls are also called the spherical pearls. Why? because it is extremely rare to find around the pearl. Even among the cultured pearls, it is extremely rare. So near-round pearls are considered as spherical.

Symmetrical pearls offer ‘symmetry’. When these pearls are cut in half, they produce identical two halves. This category includes oval pearls, button pearls and drop pearls. The last one resembles pears and usually used as pendants in jewellery. Button pearls are usually flattened and mostly used as earrings. The first one, or the oval pears are wider at the centre and taper at the ends.

Finally, we have the Baroque pearls. In short, the pearls that cannot be categorized at spherical or symmetrical. Artists usually prefer this variety for their highly irregular shapes.
