Asian Movies - War of the Arrows

srijeda , 28.01.2015.

War of the Arrows is a South Korean movie about betrayal, love and war. Loss of a father under those circumstances would probably define anyone's life. This is a movie set in the past where honor and bow and arrows were pretty much everything a man had. A suddenly orphaned brother and sister adopted by their late father's best friend turned out to be very different from each other. The brother was pretty much a looser and a fool, while the sister was a proper young lady. The binding of the two families though marriage was something that her brother could not deal with. The brand of the traitor was a mark that never faded in his mind. Things really got out of hand after the sudden attack on their village. It was the moment Nam-yi was trained for as a skilled archer and hunter. I must admit it really was a treat watching him hunt them down one by one. Those were some seriously cruel times when it totally sucked being an ordinary person without fighting skills. The transition between a traitor's son to a hero was something that was forced on him by the circumstances, not something that he was striving for. His taken sister was his only goal and it was really noble of him. The action parts were nice, especially since the preferred weapons were bows and arrows with an occasional sword here and there. All the running, hiding, ambushing and fighting really sucks you in and you live though it alongside the characters. War of the Arrows is a good movie that should be watched.

Plot

The film begins with two children Nam-yi and Ja-in being chased by King Injo's guards and saved by their father Choi Pyeong-ryung, an officer of King Gwanghae and a skilled archer. He sends his own children to find a place of refuge with his best friend Kim Min-soon. As they escaped crying, Ja-in begged her brother to go back to their father but their father was killed in front of Nam-yi. Nam-yi, though bitten by the guard dogs, kills them and escapes with Ja-in. Nam-yi becomes the only family Ja-in has. 13 years later Nam-yi (Park Hae-il) is now a skilled archer and hunter. He learns from Min-soon's son Seo-goon (Kim Mu-yeol) that he and Ja-in (Moon Chae-won) plan to get married, with the approval of Min-soon who is also Ja-in's godfather.

During the wedding, Nam-yi is up in the mountains hunting deer. He hears the rumble of the invading forces. When Nam-yi makes it back to the village, he finds his step-father slaughtered and his sister taken away. Nam-yi then sets out to find the Qing army and take out their army with his bow. The great commander of the Qing army, Jyuushinta (Ryoo Seung-ryong) discovers the mysterious man trailing his men and taking them out one by one. Jyuushinta then sets out to find Nam-yi. A war of arrows is set to begin and Nam-yi prepares to make the ultimate sacrifice...

JGames - Koihime Musou (PC)

utorak , 20.01.2015.

It's been a while since I talked about a JGame so here it is, finally. This time I played Koihime Musou, PC game. At first, I was kinda disappointed because it was all about politics and war with the neighboring countries, but then it got interesting because of the mini games. Every once in a while you get to play a mini game where you choose your generals and strategies to defeat your current enemies. The cool part is that even if you get defeated, you can replay it and every time you replay you get reinforcements so eventually you will win! It's kind of a safety net for those who are bad at mini games. When you finish the mini game the home phase opens and you can visit any of the currently unlocked characters and get real "close" with them. Koihime Musou ~A Heart-Throbbing, Maidenly Romance of the Three Kingdoms~ is a game more directed towards the male population since it's practically a harem game. I have no doubt that guys will love this one, so if you wanna try it, enjoy, I know you will.

Asian Movies - Sector 7

srijeda , 07.01.2015.

Sector 7. Just by hearing the name you would think it's probably some action pumped movie about guys running around with guns trying to off each other. Well, you'd be wrong. This is the first Korean movie I've watched that is about an oil platform in the middle of nowhere and some serious problems. Interesting how the danger attached to the oil rig's drilling was a bunch of cute glowing fish. Maybe because they looked like they weren't a threat. Who knew searching for oil could be fun as well, at least until things started to go wrong. The human factor always makes a mess of things, one way or the other, mostly because of greed. It's sad how, without fail, every time innocent people get hurt because of the mistakes of others. Hae Jun's disappointment in her uncle was something to be expected, but it still caught me by surprise. The monster he created was his own undoing. Regarding that monster, it kinda reminded of those from Doom, looked pretty similar. Guess they were lacking in imagination when they were creating this one.

All in all this is a pretty good movie. It has its ups and downs like any other movie. Drama, action, comedy and horror are all intertwined. There is always something going on, not too many dull moments, which is a positive thing. The actors did their jobs rather well and so did the CG team.

Plot

A small team of oil rig workers are searching for undiscovered oil at
the oil rig Sector 7, off the coast of Jeju Island. After the tension
builds from countless failures, the main character Hae Jun's uncle
returns with the hope of finding the untapped wells of oil. What they
don't realize is that he has a much different motive. Working together
with a researcher on board the rig, he plans to breed a newly discovered
life-form whose bodily fluids can burn for longer than 30 hours, as a
new form of fuel instead of oil.

But tragedy strikes as the specimen escapes with deaths of the
researcher, the doctor, and another worker to follow. With the loss of
the main power, the workers become stranded as the creature begins to
hunt for its next meal. Armed with nothing but a few guns and the
knowledge of the creature's minor susceptibility to flame, the remaining
workers must work together to kill the beast before it hunts them down
one by one, and escape the oil rig. But with its incredible speed
(despite its size), its lightning fast, spear-like tongue, and its
nearly impenetrable hide, they may not stand a chance.
