vibrato, Ingrid Michaelson carries the tradition of the female
singer/songwriter into the 21st century. Befitting a musician of the
digital age, Michaelson first gained wide exposure through spots on TV
soundtracks, including Grey's Anatomy and One Tree Hill. Born and raised
on New York's Staten Island to an artist mother and classical composer
father, she began exploring music through piano lessons at the age of
four. After college, she toured with a national theater troupe and spent
her free time writing songs, later compiling them into an
online-distributed recording entitled Slow the Rain. Michaelson took the
independent route by issuing her proper debut, the engaging Girls and
Boys, on her own Cabin 24 Records in January 2007. Three months later,
she won a national songwriting contest sponsored by Mountain Stage, a
radio program produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting and
distributed worldwide. "The Way I Am" was then picked up by Old Navy,
who used it to soundtrack one of their clothing commercials, and
Michaelson began making headlines as one of the country's most promising
independent artists. A benefit project comprised of live recordings, new
songs, and rarities, Be OK was released in 2008. Michaelson joined the
Hotel Cafe Tour that fall in support of the album, whose proceeds went
toward cancer research.

When it comes to mostly acoustic based, sometimes quiet singer
songwriter types, I am, admittedly, quite the fan. So it
should not come as a big suprise that I am totally bowled over
by Horse Feathers. The Portland based trio are preparing to
release their second full length album, House With No Home, on
Kill Rock Stars and I can honestly tell you that this has
become my morning album of choice during the past month or so.
As I have stated before, there is something almost sacred
about good morning music for me. It has to be gentle enough
for me to ease in, but not so sleepy and I stay in my morning
coma. Horse Feathers achieves both of those and more on this
new album. Combining the hushed tones of early Iron & Wine
with vocals and the backing strings you might find on a Bonnie
Prince Billy album, Horse Feathers have created a soothing yet
complex piece of art.
So, if you have ever called yourself a fan of Sam Beam, Will
Oldham, M. Ward, John Fahey, or Bon Iver, this is required
listening. House With No Home drops on Septemeber 9th from

Sonny J - Disastro (2008)
Every summer since Big Beat took over Britain, a record like
Disastro pops up, neon-bright and dazzling with samples. Sonny
J's particular brand is nauseatingly effervescent, layering
perky drumbeats and processed jangle over the likes of Shirley
Bassey, 60s psychedelic group the Free Design and 50s R&B
starlet Donna Hightower. The resulting din is all too often a
mess of clatter and noise, regularly tune-free and joyless.
Its general tenor is also horribly dated, the aural equivalent
of a bottle of Hooch or a magazine with Liam Gallagher and
Patsy Kensit on the cover. The Go! Team and Norman Cook always
knew the trick with this formula was a killer melody.....

To the seventeenth-century poet Robert Herrick, rosebuds were a symbol of the fleeting pleasures of youth. Orson Welles made Rosebud the dying word of Charles Foster Kane, again a symbol of the tenacity of youthful memory. Kelly and Ivan - The Rosebuds - make music that embodies that certain spirityouthful, but complex. Not at all fairytale, but magical. Not realistic, but real. Perhaps the way youth actually is.
The Rosebuds defy categorization with each new release, like creatures in a myth shifting shape to avoid capture; slippery catfish in a North Carolina river. Mention The Smiths and Ivan will turn his Morrissey croon into a gruff Greg Dulli growl or splash it against some reverb-laden surf guitar. Call them Southern Gothic and theyll release a dance record. They do not spend time categorizing themselves, each record is simply evidence of new curiosity.
On their newest album, Life Like, The Rosebuds return to more acoustic
territory, barely a year after releasing the synth-heavy dance pop of 2007s Night of the Furies. Crisp says that perhaps they needed to exorcise the anger and disillusion caused by a hard year of terrifying storms, and endless frustration over an ineffectual political state (that provided the need for the Furies metaphor in their songs) before they could move on to explore stories more closely related to their everyday life.
Having just finished the first tour for Night of the Furies, Ivan and Kelly began working on other creative projects in an attempt to take a break from music before going back out on tour. However, they soon found themselves making songs to entertain themselves and realized they had a whole record. So they ditched plans for a second tour and called in their friends (including Portastatics Matthew McCaughan, Bon Ivers Justin Vernon, and Ashley Stoves Jim Brantley) and put the finishing touches on Life Like.
The album retains the bands signature sinister breeziness, particularly on the title track and Cape Fear, one of two songs on the album that juxtapose subdued handclaps with compellingly dark lyrics. Again, Ivan and Kelly share vocal duties throughout the album, with Kelly singing Another Way In, and the lush pastoral Black Hole. On the title track, Ivan is hunted, singing about escape, ultimately describing himself as a beast trapped in taxidermy, over churning, relentless bass. In Nice Fox, his warnings are too late to save the dead fox he finds trapped under a collapsed, rotten barn, while Kelly leads the blithe refrain, it dont mean nothing at all. Catchy melodies house complex lyrical content, but always with the unmistakable nuanced-pop identity of The Rosebuds.
The Rosebuds have released four full-length albums, two 7-inches, an EP, and a digital-only album of remixes.

I'm from Barcelona is a pop group from Jnkping,
Sweden, best known for its 29 band members and
eclectic mix of instruments such as clarinets,
saxophones, flutes, trumpets, banjos, accordions,
kazoos, guitars, drums, and keyboards among others.
While most band members provide backing vocals on
releases and during live performances, Emanuel
Lundgren is founder, principal songwriter and lead
singer for the group.
In 2006 the band released an EP entitled Dont Give
Up on Your Dreams, Buddy! as well as a full length
album, Let Me Introduce My Friends - both of which
were well-received critically. Their second
full-length album, Who Killed Harry Houdini? is due
for a Fall 2008 release.

Dartz have a great melodic easy listening sound, and if that
isnt descriptive enough imagine the raw-soft nature of
Idlewild, elements of the changing spikes of Biffy Clyro, a
good pinch of Death Cab for Cutie and a bit of Futureheads
(meaning that you can add a bit of a skip to your wailing).
Vocally they are softer than all these bands, the kind of
music that draws you into the inner world of your sofa and
sends you on a journey through the village of Alnerique
itself. The album is only eight tracks long but some how it
gets into your blood and yearns to be played over and over.
There is a touch of brilliance in their sound, the marching
beat of The Lay Of The Land makes the listener feel like a
defiant revolutionary. Not all the tracks command this pace,
Embers is purely instrumental yet sits perfectly in the
listing, probably because there is a touch of melancholy in
the lyrics of The Sad History Of The Village Of Alnerique.
Thankfully this does not lead to another dreaded terribly emo
album purely because of the pace which keeps up an upbeat
thread through-out although this is certainly not an album for
those looking for disco-punk. The best genre to place it in
would be post-punk emotive pop, it slips down comfortably yet
there is an underlying angst (have a listen to A New Venture
From Mordecai & Sons) which makes it endearing.
