Alona Tal, Star of The CW's "Cult," Parlayed Military Service Into a Hollywood Grind

Alona Tal

Nine years ago, Alona Tal—star of the ambitious new The CW thriller series Cult (which premieres tonight at 9:00 p.m. EST)—was ready for a change. A working actress in her native country of Israel since the age of 6, the then-21-year-old veteran wanted to take her career to the next level. That level, as is the case for any aspiring TV or film performer, existed in Los Angeles. The only problem: Commuting from her home of Herzlia, Israel, to the City of Angels required a 17-hour flight.

She decided to uproot her entire life to America, a drastic change of lifestyle that would've been all the more daunting if Alona hadn't experienced a similar alteration three years prior. When she was 18, Alona began her mandatory service in the Israeli Defense Force. For a performing arts high school student, it was a serious departure from her previous ways of life. Stage plays and fictional characters were replaced by automatic weapons and superiors with titles like General and Lieutenant. But she wasn't scared. "It's a cultural norm, so you know it's coming," says Alona, 29. "You have 18 years to prepare yourself. Here in the States, you graduate, go on summer break, and then start college. In Israel, you finish high school and go into the force. It detached me from the umbilical cord a little bit."

Stretchable battery to power implants inside the human body

Scientists at the Northwestern University have demonstrated a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that can be stretched, twisted and bended, and still capable of powering electronics. The power and voltage of the stretchable battery are similar to a conventional lithium-ion battery of the same size, but the flexible battery is able to succeed where flat, rigid batteries would fail (make sure to check out the video and additional images below).

The revolutionary battery can be used anywhere, including the inside of the human body. It can stretch up to 300 percent of its original size and still function. It will power a commercial light-emitting diode (LED) for eight to nine hours – even when stretched, folded, twisted and mounted on a human elbow - before it needs recharging, which can be done wirelessly.

Yonggang Huang (Northwestern University) and John A. Rogers (University of Illinois) are the first to demonstrate a stretchable, implantable lithium-ion battery which could power implantable electronics that monitor brain waves or heart activity. Huang and Rogers have been working together for the last six years on stretchable electronics, and designing a cordless power supply has been a major challenge. Now they have solved the problem with their clever “space filling technique,” which delivers a small, high-powered battery.

Thank Sally Field for fixing up Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Oscars bow tie

Sally Field and Joseph Gordon-Levitt must be method actors. The stars play mother and son in best picture nominee "Lincoln" (depicting Mary Todd Lincoln and Robert Todd Lincoln), and they've transferred that dynamic to real life. Speaking on the red carpet, the duo revealed that not only had Field invited Gordon-Levitt to be her Oscars date, she'd helped him out with his bow tie in the limo — the duty of all good moms when their sons have to dress up for an important event. Most adorable Oscars couple? We think so.

Engineering expert: BP safety failures ‘tragic, egregious’

BP Oil Spill

BP ignored safety warnings and its own protocols before the deadly 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill, then issued an internal investigation report afterward that was “incomplete” because it didn’t fully analyze how management actions contributed to the disaster, an engineering expert testified Tuesday.

Robert Bea, a University of California-Berkeley professor, said during the second day of the spill’s civil trial that he would characterize BP’s failures in overseeing the Macondo well project as “tragic, egregious.”

“It’s a classic failure of management and leadership in BP,” Bea testified.

Bea is a crucial witness for plaintiffs suing BP because he has an intimate knowledge of BP’s safety procedures since he was a paid consultant for the company for years before the Gulf disaster. He said he warned BP several times over the years to improve its safety procedures and culture.

Xbox 720 to be released this October

Xbox 720 has been nearly confirmed to be receiving the upcoming game from Bungie Studios called "Destiny," and now some new information has surfaced that infers when both are going to be released.

According to a report from VG24/7 on Friday, a French retailer has leaked out that the release date for "Destiny" will indeed be Oct. 6th.

This is an interesting piece of information because while this does allege that the upcoming game "Destiny" will be released on Oct. 6th, but it also infers when the Xbox 720 could be releasing.

This game is just about confirmed to be a title that hits the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720, so the date, if correct, certainly points to one or both of the systems releasing around the same time.

Video games are now a spectator sport

i46 ATK League Of Legends FINAL!

When we created a Tetris Tournament (www.tetristournament.ca) in 2008, I had no idea of what an incredible experience it would be.

I was most surprised at what the energy was like when contestants were competing on a large screen as people watched, literally at the edge of their seats as two competitors battled it out on the little video game that comes from Russia. It was as tense and as exciting as any hockey playoff I have ever seen, and I think the others felt the same way.

In South Korea, professional video gaming has been popular for over a decade. Players, like Lim Yo-Hwan, earn six-figure salaries and have achieved f rock-star status. It's a trend that is spreading worldwide and finally gaining traction in North America.

The video game League of Legends set a record in October when eight million people watched the championship finals that took place in Los Angeles either online or on TV. Competitors battled it out for part of the $5 million in prize money - the largest ever for an e-sport event. That's right, we are calling these e-sports now.
