At the registry And so I set off. In the first place the meeting arranged with Dr N would not be at the surgery in the hospital environment. He gave me sketchy instructions how to find his room. Anybody who has tried to find something in a hospital, other than some kind of large ward near the entrance to the building, knows what kind of a maze they are. Be they in basement highway-corridors for laundry below the masses of pipes of all kinds, or in the winding paths in the attics. Dr N is in a garret of that kind. After a long time wandering and two enquiries, at last I found a soul patient enough to direct me precisely to my rescuer. Behind the canteen is a broom cupboard and toilet, and across the way to the bar is some kind of close gloomy hallway. Not only did I have to hunch my shoulders but also turn a little to the side to pass through the corridor at all. Nearly there. In the end of the corridor is a door with “Addiction” written on the frame. Under that a second small label which read “Dr N”.
Bugger! What is it now? Tap-tap. Nothing. Well, where did they plaster him here? And maybe it’s not so bad, except he opens the door and calls “Coffee please!” But what is that “Addiction”, what the devil…
Then there he is: he becomes all lively and happy; good morning, good morning, please, come in… He pushes a scientific journal into my hand on which is written “Addiction”, This is for you! Now I am an addict as well? Of course, I had not doubted it… No, no, - smiles Dr N – That is our journal, it is published here, and I am on the editorial board! Aha. Immediately he puts me at ease.
The cabin could not be smaller, but it is snug. Sometimes it is good to be behind the canteen in the furthermost room. Outside it is safely busy, immediately next door is a classroom, and here is heavenly peace. On one side is a shelf with his journal “Addiction”.
But now the first time I am able to observe Dr N’s personal touch. On the table instead of an antediluvian typewriter was his laptop. In the corner are smart fancy modern shoes. For the first time he is not up to the neck in white overalls and I see that underneath he wears a bright green T shirt with a logo. Eh, screw you! Bad luck follows me. It seems that he is some kind of dandy. I can’t buy that, I am old fashioned: dandy man = empty head. What else? Sometimes life has shown my error with an exception of some kind: I hope that is the case now. In the final reckoning, I thought that he was a geek at first, and it turned out N was actually some punk slipped in amongst medics. Immediately he took me on. Plausibly he will now show that I had a mistaken prejudice (and that prejudice can be true, damn it!)
So just bravely onwards, up till now it is all well said and done.
I read the blog- he says with a smile. Oops! Then he read all that I wrote about him behind his back. But also something, I think, what now, and I say: I hope that it was useful to you. He grins: Yes, yes. But the main thing is that you are already a lot better. And you will be quite well. Well, good, I can go… Woah, not so fast! He reins me in, smiling because I had already stood up from my chair to run away, albeit neither alive in my head nor having confessed that I was panicking a little. If he says well, that means well… When I say well, it means that the worst is behind you. The crisis is past. But truly we have work waiting for us. Muuuuch, much work.
And buggery, I think. And I slump back to the table.
