The 21-Day Dad's Challenge: Three Weeks to a Better Relationship with Your Kids This fall, men all over the U.S. will emerge from movie theaters wanting to be better fathers—having just watched Courageous, the new film from the producers of Fireproof. This book will help them reach that goal. Using well-known names from the worlds of sports, Christianity, and parenting, The 21-Day Dad’s Challenge will inspire and equip men to succeed in practicing “Championship Fatherhood.” Though not an official tie-in to the movie, this joint project by Focus on the Family and the National Center for Fathering will aid dads in applying the film’s message. The “challenge” format will appeal to men’s competitive instincts. And the simple, straightforward approach, combined with the limited time frame required, will convince them that they really can become measurably better dads in just three weeks. (12) Fear, I Release You Changing Woman I gathered up some photos that had been sitting on my altar for three days. My partner had ripped these up back in April when I told him I was moving out of the home we shared. I chose the one that, where ripped, divided us into two. On my half, there was a bit of his shoulder still in the photo; and, on his, mine. This reminded me that while we are separated, we still hold a little piece of each other. Looking at my fear of not being in this relationship, of eventually parting ways with this man, made me aware of how much clinging on I have been doing. We happen to be wearing facial masks in the photos - what masks were we wearing when we entered the relationship? What were we trying to hide? Also, there was a lot of anger that he put into those images by ripping them that I needed to release. Why should I hold on to this negativity? I had found a black compartmentalized box earlier in the day, and so I used this to house the rest of my altar items. I meditated prior to setting up my altar, and one message that came through was: "You know about death very well, now you need to know about life". I realized that one of my biggest fears was living. I grabbed a stone egg that sits on my desk altar to represent the emergence of new life that is taking place for me. Why do I want to stay inside the egg? Why am I afraid to burst forth, like the baby in the Ace of Wands card from my Motherpeace Tarot (which came up in an earlier reading this week)? I took 3 dried roses and 9 holly berries that were on my altar as well, to represent the slow death of my relationship and for that energy's protection into the underworld. Once outside, I wrote down some painful words that were written about me in the past. "Die Tomeco, you fucking dyke!" - written on my dorm door back in 1995 after I told a "friend" that I was bisexual. It's taken me 11 years to finally come out as a lesbian. I wanted to let go of the fear of being myself, of being known for who I really am, of the fear of violence that comes with my sexual identity. I put this behind my photo. "She believes in ghosts and shit - she leaves food on her altar - dead people don't eat - some straight off the reservation shit" - a IM chat between my partner and his friend that I discovered back in Aug. 2005 after returning from a Green Goddess Apprenticehip with Susun Weed. My fear of not being accepted and being ridiculed by people I love the most about my path as a witch and my resentment toward them needed to be released. I put this behind his photo. I drew a large eye to signify the all seeing eye of the Divine - walking the path of priestess requires awareness and being fully you. My fear of being seen in my totality needed representation on this altar, too. Two of my housemates were also doing some fear releasing work, so we did ritual as well. I wrote down other fears on 13 strips of paper: wounded Tomeco, co-dependency, worry, resentment, etc. One was blank to represent silence. I have been doing a lot of healing work around past abuse, and silence was a big part of that. I recited "Fear Poem" by Joy Harjo as an incantation and subsequently burned my 13 strips (after reading each one aloud) of fear, the photos, quotes, the eye, the roses and holly berries from the altar. I felt a huge release of old tied up junk inside my body, and the void that resulted. All this space being freed up for LIFE, for my own energies to take up residency and thrive. I went back into my bedroom and grabbed the rest of the photos from my altar and a red rose that I had placed over them, my cut hair since March (which was holding a lot of that dead energy from this relationship) and hair I lost while transitioning to locs, an eternally suffering woman card (ancestral baggage), and an old beat up King of Diamonds card (my old inner male, my relationship to money, and my partner) and burned them. I renamed myself as Sekhma'at Akuara, to embody the divine energies of Sekhmet, Ma'at, Yemaya, and Ochun that I want to live both in and out. I did a reading afterward to see what is now manifest(ing) for me, what to do with this energy, and what the Earth Mother wants me to give back to the world: Judgement, Seven of Disks, Shaman of Wands. Altar Dedication "I take myself back, fear. Come here, fear, for I am alive and you are so afraid of dying." {21/365} Three Weeks Complete! © Kimberley Richards, 2009 Hiya :) I've now completed three weeks of the project wooo! I'm hoping to come up with some new ideas... because although I have a few things planned out, I can't do those quite yet and I've run out of immediate ideas. This photo is kinda supposed to be set in the past.. not sure if it actually looks that way but we'll see what you guys think. Yes I'm reading Lassie! Not actually... I will be though! i got this book at an antique store today. I'm the only teen I know who likes antiques. They are so interesting though! So much history all in one place. I love old books too. Although this book isn't really an antique but still interesting to me, having never really watched the show. Hope everyone's monday was pretty darn good, I know mine was :) Tomorrow is a 5:30am wakeup... BLEH! So I'm not a morning person but it's necessary to get home in time for an app. Then later in the day I'm going to get my hair cut... kinda nervous! Haven't actually got my hair cut in a very long time... and haven't had my hair styled in an even longer amount of time! Going with my friend for moral support. I'll probably post before/after pics... or at least the after! Hopefully a bag over my head won't be necessary! Sorry for the novel... guess I'm in a bookish mood :P Night! how much should a three week old baby eat Over one million people list an item for sale on eBay every day—and 600,000 of these are professional full-time sellers. Van Morrison At The Movies: Soundtrack Hits SOLISTA EN INGLES If Hollywood's marriage with pop music is too often a marketing-driven shotgun affair, there remain musicians whose artistry can't help but elevate whatever film project they're associated with. This 19-track compendium underscores that notion, gathering a career-spanning collection of the Irish rock-R&B legend's contributions to an eclectic body of films that stretches from Pope of Greenwich Village's effusive early solo hit "Jackie Wilson Said" to the unlikely live collaboration with Roger Waters on "Comfortably Numb" that seasons Martin Scorsese's Oscar-nominated The Departed. The collection serves as a concise primer to the high points of Van Morrison's mercurial career, from the gritty career-breakout hits ("Gloria," "Baby Please Don't Go") of his British Invasion band Them through such early solo touchstones as "Wild Night," "Brown Eyed Girl," "Domino," and the collection's fine, previously unreleased live version of "Moondance" from An American Werewolf in London. But, as tracks like "Wonderful Remark," "Bright Side of the Road," "Someone Like You," and his Chieftains collaboration "Irish Heartbeat" ably argue, it's also an invitation to explore less heralded, if equally seductive, corners of the singer's rich oeuvre. --Jerry McCulley More from Van Morrison Moondance Astral Weeks The Best of Van Morrison Into the Music (13) Mar 31-08 Coffee Break with Barbara Stanwyck Mar 31-08 Coffee Break with Barbara Stanwyck I spent a rainy night viewing of the pre-release version of "Baby Face" with Barbara Stanwyck which leads me to note how much creativity the film industry lost when Hollywood enforced the "Production Code" aka "Hays Code" in 1934. The code stated that films could only present certain things that were explicit, degenerate or unvirtuous if they motivated the plot and were not shown as acceptable behavior. The audience wasn't to view anything deemed immoral. Baby Face (1933) was one such movie. Many critics at the time thought that Baby Face was "The most depraved film to come out of Hollywood." It is the story of Lily, played by Barbara Stanwyck, who sleeps her way to the top and isn't denounced for her raunchy behavior. The film was scrubbed according to the code and released to the public in 1934 as a far less interesting film. Between the years of 1929 and 1934, women in Hollywood movies were portrayed as modern. For those years, women in American movies were unrepentant about having a career, divorced, took lovers, had babies out of wedlock, got rid of cheating husbands, and enjoyed their sexuality. In general almost everything in Hollywood cinema between 1934 and 1968 complied with the code and depicted "good" women in ways very different from those complex ladies of the 30's. In 1968 when the code was no longer in effect, these portrayals began to change in Hollywood. Europe and other film making countries, on the other hand, had maintained broader viewpoints and less restricted "moral" standards throughout the Thirties to the Sixties. No wonder there were so many of us only going to "art house" movies and foreign films. The censorship meant to be a positive force in the building of a strong western society only added to the mediocratizing and stereotyping of the North American culture. The pre-release version of "Baby Face" I watched this evening belies its age and I recommend it, should you find a pre-release copy. A big branch for Sarah, a small branch for Percy, and an old piece of ivy for Bill. When three baby owls awake one night to find their mother gone, they can't help but wonder where she is. Stunning illustrations from unique and striking perspectives capture the owls as they worry about their mother: What is she doing? When will she be back? What scary things move all around them? Not surprisingly, a joyous flapping and dancing and bouncing greets her return, lending a celebratory tone to the ending of this comforting tale. Never has the plight of young ones who miss their mother been so simply told or so beautifully rendered. Bartholomew and the Oobleck: (Caldecott Honor Book) (Classic Seuss) An ooey-gooey, green oobleck was not exactly what the king had in mind when he ordered something extra-special from his royal magicians. Bartholomew and the Oobleck easily qualifies as a Seuss classic, first told way back in 1949. And its message--the importance of owning up to your mistakes and saying that you're sorry--is as timeless now as it was then. Bartholomew Cubbins serves thanklessly as pageboy to King Derwin of Didd, a headstrong man who's decided he isn't satisfied with mere sun, fog, rain, and snow. ("Humph! The things that come down from my sky!") He wants something else, something uniquely his own, so he calls in his royal magicians ("Shuffle, duffle, muzzle, muff. Fista, wista, mista-cuff. We are men of groans and howls, mystic men who eat boiled owls"). Happy to oblige, the magicians tell the king they can make "oobleck" fall from the sky, only nobody--not even the magicians--knows just what oobleck is. But after a night of arcane incantations, everyone in the kingdom gets a taste of the stuff (in the case of the Captain of the Guard, literally!), as the green, gluey goo gums up everything in sight. Of course, Bartholomew tries to help, but it's up to the king to save the day, as he learns to utter not magic words but simple words with magic in them: "I'm sorry."
