80's wednesday

80's wednesday

this is my 80's wednesday shot today. although very few people would know this movie besides my sister! this is the soundtrack..on vinyl! and the record is still in it in decent shape..even though i can't play it.
we were obsessed with this underground movie that was done by penelope spheeris (she did fast times at ridgemont high with sean penn). there's bad acting in this movie, bad lighting but that made it all the more funny in some ways. the basic idea was good..a bunch of punk kids lives..crazy stuff. little does anyone know..the bass player from the red hot chili peppers was in this movie..he must have been about 16.

"make it a blue one"..our favorite line

LES LACS DU CONNEMARA

LES LACS DU CONNEMARA

I found the lyrics of a French song written in 1978 when the Troubles were at their height. My French est un peu, how you say, rusty? In school Mr Page had us translating from French to Irish and so the first translation below is in Irish. You will have to scroll down further if you cannot read the French or Irish and there is an English translation down there, somewhere!

Maureen a dit "oui"

De Tiperrary
Bally-Connelly
Et de Galway,
Ils sont arrives
Dans le comte
Du Connemara

Y avait les Connor,
Les O'Conolly,
Les Flaherty
Du Ring of Kerry

(My translation)
The earth is scorched by the wind over the stone moors
The shores of the lakes are for those who still live here
Connemara is a little hell.
Black clouds roll in from the north
and darken the land, the lakes and the rivers
It is the cloak of Connemara

The following Spring, beneath the Irish sky
all was quiet when Maureen
plunged naked into a Connemara lake.
Sean Kelly said he was a Catholic
Maureen was also of that granite church

Here they live like in the times of the Gael
And the times of Cromwell
when the rains and sunbeams of heaven echoed the thud of hooves

And then you believe once again in the monsters
that lived in the lakes and swam to the surface on summer evenings
before they dived back down again, forever.

Here you encounter people of every kind,
Those who seek rest for their souls
Willing that their hearts might taste something better

And once again you believe that the day will come
(It will very soon,) when the Irish will make peace
Around that Cross that stands deep into Connemara
They will not accept the peace of the Gaul
Nor that of the Kings of England.

I used a wooden birdhouse base and covered it with polymer clay and a polymer-clay based grout. I pushed sticks into the grout & hot glued Spanish moss to the base.

The log cabin idea came from Dorothy Egan's Painting & Decorating

chefs kitchen decor - Great Kitchens:

Great Kitchens: Design Ideas from America's Top Chefs

Great Kitchens: Design Ideas from America's Top Chefs

Professional chefs design their home kitchens for efficiency, comfort, and style. What makes a pro's kitchen work so well? A knowledge of cooking and a signature style. This book features hundreds of design ideas offering readers a glimpse inside the home kitchens of some of America's most renowned chefs. It's a visual feast and a wellspring of design inspiration.
-- Features 26 dream kitchens and advice on creating your own.
-- Includes more than 300 photographs, floor plans, lists of equipment, and recipes.
-- More than 50,000 copies sold in cloth since publication.

If envy is an issue with which you struggle daily, you may want to avoid Great Kitchens, a lavishly illustrated walk-through of 26 fabulous kitchens in the homes of some of America's best chefs. This is a Taunton Press publication--the same people who bring us Fine Woodworking, Fine Homebuilding, and Wooden Boat, among others--so rest assured the production values are high enough to raise the stakes for everyone else in the business.
The one thing all of these kitchens have in common is that they didn't start out this way. There are kitchens put into Victorian houses, 1920s farm houses, swim schools (no kidding: Mary Sue Milliken of Border Grill in Los Angeles, and her architect husband, Josh Schweitzer, bought a small swim school and put home and kitchen where locker rooms and showers could once be found), old bars, upscale apartments, ancient stone houses. These are kitchens, then, that have been thought about by people who work with food, and know what they want at home.
Built-in wood-burning ovens and hearths seem to be a big deal. So, too, are custom wok stoves. Seattle chef Tom Douglas put his enormous prep island on industrial casters. He also put his herbs and spices into cans that attach to bar magnets on what would be wasted wall space. He chose the domestic version of an industrial stove because it is better insulated and doesn't heat up the kitchen. And like several chefs in the book, he swears by his commercial Hobart dishwasher with its 90-second cycle.
Great Kitchens is a multifunction book. You can leave it open on a coffee table as a piece of publishing art. You can use it to launch your daydreams. But most of all, you can use it to learn from the mistakes and successes of others, and gain insight from a lot of very practical information.
Most over-the-top built-in appliance? Terrance Brennan's bread-warming drawer. But in this book, it makes perfect sense. --Schuyler Ingle

The Soul of a Chef: The Journey Toward Perfection

In his second in-depth foray into the world of professional cooking, Michael Ruhlman journeys into the heart of the profession. Observing the rigorous Certified Master Chef exam at the Culinary Institute of America, the most influential cooking school in the country, Ruhlman enters the lives and kitchens of rising star Michael Symon and renowned Thomas Keller of the French Laundry. This fascinating book will satisfy any reader's hunger for knowledge about cooking and food, the secrets of successful chefs, at what point cooking becomes an art form, and more. Like Ruhlman's The Making of a Chef, this is an instant classic in food writing-one of the fastest growing and most popular subjects today.

For his first book, The Making of a Chef, hands-on journalist Michael Ruhlman attended the most prestigious cooking school in the U.S., the Culinary Institute of America. He also earned his chef's whites and began cooking professionally. Ruhlman ventures further into the secret lives of chefs with his second book, The Soul of a Chef. This enthusiastically researched report is divided into three parts: The first concerns the Certified Master Chef exam, a brutal weeklong cooking marathon that measures the skill levels of professional chefs. The second and third parts of Ruhlman's book are devoted to the careers of two different chefs, Michael Symon of Cleveland's Lola Bistro and Thomas Keller of Napa Valley's legendary French Laundry. The thread connecting these three tales together is Ruhlman's quest for culinary perfection: Does it exist? Is it possible? How is it even measurable? Ruhlman does indeed stumble onto the realization of his high-minded ideal, serving up a palatable conclusion for hard-core foodies equally obsessed with the perfect meal. --Sumi Hahn Almquist

Yellow Chrysanthemums

Yellow Chrysanthemums

Chrysanthemums, often called mums or chrysanths, are of the genus (Chrysanthemum) constituting approximately 30 species of perennial flowering plants in the family Asteraceae which is native to Asia and northeastern Europe.

Modern chrysanthemums are much more showy than their wild relatives. The flowers occur in various forms, and can be daisy-like, decorative, pompons or buttons. This genus contains many hybrids and thousands of cultivars developed for horticultural purposes. In addition to the traditional yellow, other colors are available, such as white, purple, and red. The most important hybrid is Chrysanthemum ? morifolium (syn. C. ? grandiflorum), derived primarily from C. indicum but also involving other species.

Chrysanthemums are broken into two basic groups, Garden Hardy and Exhibition. Garden hardy mums are new perennials capable of being wintered over in the ground in most northern latitudes. Exhibition varieties are not usually as sturdy. Garden hardies are defined by their ability to produce an abundance of small blooms with little if any mechanical assistance (i.e., staking) and withstanding wind and rain. Exhibition varieties on the other hand require staking, over-wintering in a relatively dry cool environment, sometimes with the addition of night lights.

The Exhibition varieties can be used to create many amazing plant forms; Large disbudded blooms, spray forms, as well as many artistically trained forms, such as: Thousand Bloom, Standard (trees), Fans, Hanging Baskets, Topiary, Bonsai, and Cascades.

Chrysanthemum blooms are divided into 13 different bloom forms by the US National Chrysanthemum Society, Inc., which is in keeping with the international classification system. The bloom forms are defined by the way in which the ray and disk florets are arranged.

Chrysanthemum blooms are composed of many individual flowers (florets), each one capable of producing a seed. The disk florets are in the center of the bloom head, and the ray florets are on the perimeter. The ray florets are considered imperfect flowers, as they only possess the female productive organs, while the disk florets are considered perfect flowers as they possess both male and female reproductive organs.

Irregular Incurve: These are the giants of the chrysanthemum world. Quite often disbudded to create a single giant bloom (ogiku), the disk florets are completely concealed, while the ray florets curve inwardly to conceal the disk and also hang down to create a 'skirt'.

Reflex: The disk florets are concealed and the ray florets reflex outwards to create a mop like appearance.

Regular Incurve: Similar to the irregular incurves, only usually smaller blooms, with nearly perfect globular form. Disk florets are completely concealed. They used to be called 'Chinese'.

Decorative: Similar to reflex blooms without the mop like appearance. Disk florets are completely concealed, ray florets usually don't radiate at more than a 90 degree angle to the stem.

Intermediate Incurve: These blooms are in-between the Irregular and Regular incurves in both size and form. They usually have broader florets and a more loosely composed bloom. Again, the disk florets are completely concealed.

Pompon: *Note the spelling, it is not pompom. The blooms are fully double, of small size, and almost completely globular in form.

Single/Semi-Double: These blooms have completely exposed disk florets, with between 1 and 7 rows of ray florets, usually radiating at not more than a 90 degree angle to the stem.

Anemone: The disk florets are prominently featured, quite often raised and overshadowing the ray florets.

Spoon: The disk florets are visible and the long tubular ray florets are spatulate.

Quill: The disk florets are completely concealed, and the ray florets are tube like.

Spider: The disk florets are completely concealed, and the ray florets are tube like with hooked or barbed ends, hanging loosely around the stem.

Brush & Thistle: The disk florets may be visible. The ray florets are often tube like, and project all around the flower head, or project parallel to the stem.

Exotic: These blooms defy classification as they possess the attributes of more than one of the other twelve bloom types.

Chrysanthemum leaves resemble its close cousin, the mugwort weed — so much so that mugwort is sometimes called wild chrysanthemum — making them not always the first choice for professional gardeners.

Smithtown, Long Island NY

Plant Markers

Plant Markers

It seems that I'm always on a search to better mark my garden. I've tried rocks, scraps of wood, popsicle sticks, and more. All of these fell short in some way or another.

The other night when I opened a jar of home canned carrots, it occurred to me that I could use the old lids for plant markers. We did a test on a few, drilled a hole and used a permanent marker to write plant ids on the lid. I think it'll work like a charm. We can hang tags off of poles or tomato cages or just put them on stakes at the start of each row.

I'm also thinking I can use these as decorative hang tags on gift baskets and jars of homemade goodies that I give away.

The Art of Case Study Research

This book presents a disciplined, qualitative exploration of case study methods by drawing from naturalistic, holistic, ethnographic, phenomenological and biographic research methods.
Robert E. Stake uses and annotates an actual case study to answer such questions as: How is the case selected? How do you select the case which will maximize what can be learned? How can what is learned from one case be applied to another? How can what is learned from a case be interpreted? In addition, the book covers: the differences between quantitative and qualitative approaches; data-gathering including document review; coding, sorting and pattern analysis; the roles of the researcher; triangulation; and reporting.

359 Douglas Road

359 Douglas Road

Douglaston Historic District, Douglaston, Queens, New York City, New York, United States

Date: 1922
Architect: Undetermined Original Owner: Undetermined Type: Freestanding house Style: Colonial Revival Stories: 2
Structure/material: Frame with wood shingle siding
Notable building features: Gabled roofs; brick chimney; arched, recessed entryway with panelled door and sidelit enframement with

fanlight; enclosed porch with fanlight window; one-story side wing; windows with historic multi-pane sash.

INTRODUCTION

The Douglaston Historic District contains more than 600 houses set along landscaped streets on a mile-long peninsula extending into Little Neck Bay, at the northeastern edge of Queens adjoining Nassau County.

Its history over the past four centuries ranges from a native American settlement to an eighteenth-century farm, a nineteenth-century estate called Douglas Manor, and an early twentieth-century planned suburb, also called Douglas Manor.

The Douglaston Historic District encompasses the entire Douglas Manor suburban development, plus several contiguous blocks. Most of the houses in the proposed district date from the early- to mid-twentieth century, while a few survive from the nineteenth century, and one from the eighteenth century.

The landscape includes many impressive and exotic specimen trees planted on the mid-nineteenth-century estate, as well as a great white oak, located at 233 Arleigh Road, believed to be 600 years old.

Douglaston's location on a peninsula jutting into Flushing Bay at the eastern border of Queens County is an important factor in establishing the character of the district. The very early buildings surviving in the district include the c.1735 Van Wyck House, the c. 1819 Van Zandt manor house (expanded in the early twentieth century for use as the Douglaston Club), and the Greek Revival style c. 1848-50 Benjamin Allen House.

Much of the landscaping, including the specimen trees, survives from the estate of Douglas Manor, established by George Douglas and maintained by his son William Douglas.

Most of the houses in the historic district were built as part of the planned suburb of Douglas Manor, developed by the Rickert-Finlay Company, that was part of the residential redevelopment of the Borough of Queens following its creation and annexation to the City of Greater New York in 1898.

A set of covenants devised by the Rickert-Finlay Company helped assure a carefully planned environment, including a shorefront held in common, winding streets following the topography of the peninsula, and single-family houses ranging in size from substantial mansions along Shore Road on the west to more modest cottages closer to Udalls Cove on the east.

The houses of the historic district, which are representative of twentieth-century residential architecture, were designed in a variety of styles including the many variants of the Colonial Revival, many houses in the English manner incorporating Tudor Revival, English cottage, and Arts and Crafts motifs, as well as the Mediterranean Revival. In most cases, they were designed by local Queens architects, including over a dozen who lived in Douglaston itself.

The district includes three houses of the Craftsman type pioneered by Gustav Stickley. Eight of the houses in the district were designed by Josephine Wright Chapman, one of America's earliest successful women architects, and they constitute an important body of her work.

The Douglaston Historic District survives today as an important example of an early twentieth-century planned suburb adapted to the site of a nineteenth-century estate. The stylistically varied suburban residences, the distinctive topography, the landscaped setting, and the winding streets create a distinct sense of place and give the district its special character.

HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL BACKGROUND OF THE DOUGLASTON HISTORIC DISTRICT

Native American and Colonial antecedents

The Native American presence on the Little Neck peninsula today known as Douglaston included the Matinecoc,1 one of a group on western Long Island linked by culture and language to others in the area surrounding Manhattan Island (including the Nayack, Marechkawieck, Canarsee, Rockaway, and Massapequa). A number of finds from those settlements have been identified at various sites on the peninsula.2 The Matinecoc, who fanned the peninsula and apparently also produced wampum, were summarily evicted in the 1660s by Thomas Hicks, later Judge Hicks, in what has been described as the only such seizure of property recorded in Flushing town records. In the 1930s, according to local histories, a Matinecoc burial ground was destroyed to make way for a widening of Northern Boulevard, and the remains reinterred in the cemetery of Zion Church.3

The property seized by Thomas Hicks in the 1660s passed through the hands of several of his family members, and several subsequent sales to other families, before being acquired in 1813 by Wynant Va

The property seized by Thomas Hicks in the 1660s passed through the hands of several of his family members, and several subsequent sales to other families, b

Craft Desk01

Craft Desk01

I finally had a chance to put my craft room together!

I purchased an "over the sink" shelf from Amazon; it had the dowel for a paper towel holder which I'll use for my spools of ribbon. It also had a handy pull-out wire basket, which will come in handy for larger items that need tucked away. I nailed it to the desk top so it wouldn't move around on me.

I hung clip boards from metal hooks that screw into the wall - these will be used for ideas/inspiration, or works-in-process so I can keep any instructions/papers/stickers/embellishments all in one place. Eventually these will be covered with paint/paper and decorated a bit more craftily... :)

ART/WORK: Everything You Need to Know (and Do) As You Pursue Your Art Career

ART/WORK: Everything You Need to Know (and Do) As You Pursue Your Art Career

Find Out What They Didn't Teach You in Art School
The most comprehensive guide of its kind, Art/Work gives artists of every level the tools they need to make it in an art world so competitive one dealer likens it to "The Sopranos, except nobody gets killed." Whether you're an art school grad looking for a gallery, a mid-career artist managing a busy studio, or someone just thinking about becoming a professional artist, this indispensable resource will help you build your career and protect yourself along the way.
Unlike other creative professionals, visual artists don't have agents or managers. You have to do it all yourself, at least until you find gallery representation -- and even then, there are important business and legal issues you need to understand to stay in control of your career and ensure you're being treated fairly. Heather Darcy Bhandari, a gallery director, and Jonathan Melber, an arts lawyer, walk you through these issues so that you can essentially act as your own manager and agent. They show you, for example, how to tackle business basics such as tracking inventory and preparing invoices; how to take legal precautions like registering a copyright and drafting consignment forms; how to use promotional tools like websites and business cards; and how to approach career decisions such as choosing the right venue to show your work.
In addition to drawing on their own experiences, Bhandari and Melber interviewed nearly one hundred curators, dealers, and other arts professionals, in cities across the country, about what they expect from and look for in artists. The authors also talked to a host of artists about their careers and the lessons they've learned navigating the art world. The book is full of their entertaining anecdotes and candid advice.
No matter what kind of artist you are -- or want to be -- this book will help you. Art/Work covers everything you need to know to succeed, saving you from having to learn it all the hard way -- and letting you spend more time making art.

Pumpkin Carving

Pumpkin Carving

I took off work for most of the Monday before Halloween. We used the time to round out our yard decorations, which grew leaps and bounds this year, and to carve pumpkins. We chose three pumpkins; one for each of us, and relative in size. We used a pattern making software to design their faces. They largely reflected our personalities as well. Paige's was silly, Dad's was serious/scary and Mom's was feminine.

Just like picking pumpkins from the patch, Paige didn't much care for cleaning and carving pumpkins. We tried to convince her to help, which she did a few times, but for the most part Marna did all the cleaning. I used some cool battery-powered tools to carve both mine and Paige's pumpkins. Marna, with the most intricate pattern, carved her own.

One of the new neighbors stopped by with a bag of candy for Paige, since they weren't going to be home for their first Halloween in their new home. Paige spent the rest of the pumpkin carving arranging and sorting her new treats.

While Paige has been shying away from getting pictures more and more of late, we did manage to convince her that princesses like to get their pictures taken. Instead of three or four decent pictures to choose from, I had twenty or thirty. We decided that Paige sharing her lollipop with the pumpkin more or less summed up the afternoon.

Halloween night, Paige went out with the next door neighbors to about a dozen houses (essentially around the block). Although she might have had a hard time understanding all the pumpkin activities up to that point, she definitely figured it out that night. Any house well lit and/or decorated with the orange gourds were immediate targets for Paige and her friends.

As for the Ariel costume? We couldn't convince her to get into it one more time, so Paige went as Cinderella, using a dress we bought for her earlier in the year at Disney World in Orlando. She did however wear the purple coat that Grandma Rodman made for her the same weekend she made the costume. I guess you win some, and you lose some. The important thing was that Paige was happy and warm, and had a great time trick-or-treating with her friends. Mission accomplished!

Shoe Cake V

Shoe Cake V

Nikon F4 with Konica Minolta Centuria 100 negative film. Scanned on my Konica Minolta Dimage Scan Dual IV scanner. This scanner has no ICE feature to remove the dust and scratches. After much toil and head-scratching I have decided to leave the defects in. It is too much work to deal with them manually and the software solutions for dust damage the image too much.

Incidentally, the spots here are water spots. I actually washed this film in warm water with a tiny amount of dishwashing soap. The problem is the drying. I didn't have anything like "Fotoflow" to break the water surface tension and prevent the beading of the water. I blew what I could off with a blower bulb but Doha is just SO dusty that I couldn't prevent some water spots. I now have a spray bottle of PEC solution so I don't have to wet (and try to dry) the film. Unfortunately, film comes back from any Doha lab with a haze of residue on it and scratched.

My wife made this amazing cake! Yes, the shoe box is a cake. However, the shoe is also made entirely of icing! Only the bows are made of ribbon.

5 in Classic Nautical Sundial Compass in solid Brass

5 in Classic Nautical Sundial Compass in solid Brass

This is a finely crafted, solid brass sundial and compass in one convenient unit. This unit allows an individual to tell the exact time by taking into account all local variables, a marker to account for the declination of the sun, a sundial, and a compass with a magnetic needle. If properly used, it is a highly accurate timepiece, a perfect partner to the sextant for navigation. It has black enameling for easy viewing and to highlight the beautiful and delicate designwork. There is also a 'lock' to hold the needle in place and prevent damage, and folds for easy carrying. It measures 5 inches at the base and 4 inches across the sundial. When folded it is 2 inches tall, and can unfold to as much as 5 inches. This is a new item, with no problems. I have personally use this and can confirm it is easy to operate and highly accurate.

Silver Spring Md., The Silver Theatre:1938

Silver Spring Md., The Silver Theatre:1938

The Silver Theatre opened September 15, 1938, with 1,100 seats and "Four Daughters" starring John Garfield and Claude Rains. The Silver was built by a local movie theatre operator W.S. Wilcox, but quickly turned over to Warner Bros. The theatre was designed by fame theatre architect John Eberson, one of his later classics. The historic building has a nautical theme including its mast like vertical sign and imitation portholes. When seen from above, the building mimics the lines of a ship. Eberson designed it to give moviegoers the feeling they are entering a cruise ship. The movie screen was designed to appear as if it were floating in front of the auditorium.

In 1984, objecting to the preservation of the theatre, its owners demolished some of the facade including the vertical neon town and tile mosaics. As demolition crews punched holes in the brick facade in August 1984, frantic Silver Spring residents rushed to the theatre to plead that demolition be halted. A 'stop work' order from Montgomery County saved the theatre from demolition at that time. The infamous, deliberate vandalism of the theatre by its owners became a rallying call to those who cherished it. K-B Theatres closed the Silver Theatre in 1985. Boarded up, its fate was uncertain. The Silver Theatre was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Richard Striner, a founder and former president of the Art Deco Society of Washington led a 19 year campaign to save the theatre. In 1998, Montgomery County began negotiations with the American Film Institute to reopen the theatre. The AFI were previously based at Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center since 1975. Renovations by Gensler Architects at the Silver began in 2001. The five year construction project cost twenty million dollars and was totally funded by Montgomery County. County executive Douglas M. Duncan led the charge to fund the theatre's rehabilitation. The AFI Silver is the flagship (pun intended) of a one million public & private rejuvenation of the downtown Silver Spring.

The historic Silver Theatre was 'rehabilitated' rather than replicated, because it isn't an exact replica as it was. The original blueprints were discovered, and reviewed, along with vintage photographs. When built, the theatre had 60 colors in the interior. The reincarnation has 40 colors including the blues, yellows, reds and deep browns typical of 1930's Art Moderne. Peacocks and shells can be seen on the wall decor. A new larger screen was placed in front of the original smaller screen. The original carpet was replicated.

The rehabilitation project features 32,000 square feet of new construction housing two new stadium theatres, a film-based retail kiosk, office and meeting space, as well as reception and exhibit areas.

The AFI Silver reopened April 4, 2003 with a gala including a screening of the restored classic "The Oxbow Incident" and actor/director Clint Eastwood receiving the AFI Silver Legacy Award. With photographs of its facade and auditoriums, the AFI Silver Theatre is depicted in the 2004 book 'Cinema Treasures, A New Look at Classic Movie Theaters'.

As of 2007, historic Auditorium 1 has 400 seats in its raked auditorium, an electric organ to accompany silent films, projection equipment that includes 70mm projectors, and a very large movie screen that is 41 feet wide and 18 feet tall. Auditorium 2 has 200 seats, stadium seated, and a very large movie screen that is 37' x 19'. Auditorium 3 has 75 seats, stadium seating, and a 27' x 14' screen. All auditoriums have digital surround sound, are THX certified, and have curtains to open and close before the movie.

Concessions that can be enjoyed in the cafe or auditoriums include beer and wine, in addition to food and other drinks.

Office: After - The bookshelf!

Office: After - The bookshelf!

I have been drooling over this bookshelf at Ikea for YEARS, and knew it HAD to go right here. I finally decided to buy it, and the 4 things that slide in to make the cubbies into cabinets. Genius!

I recently did a furniture upgrade to my office and now I can say that I think this is the only room in my house that's exactly how I want it to be. But that's the fun of home ownership - if every room looked exactly like what I wanted, what would there be left to plan and look forward to???

Alexander Hamilton US Custom House, NYC

Alexander Hamilton US Custom House, NYC

A superb example of Beaux Arts architecture - the Alexander Hamilton US Custom House at the southern tip of Manhattan - has had exterior and ceremonial interior spaces restored and/or conserved while old office space was renovated for modern use.

Restoration and conservation included cleaning the building's Bowling Green facade and cleaning and/or conserving interior murals, decorative paintings, woodwork, metalwork, and marble. Renovations adapted space for Federal courtrooms and ancillary offices, for offices for future tenants, for meeting rooms, and for a 350 seat auditorium with state of-the art projection facilities. Upgrades of fire-safety, security, telecommunications, and heating, air conditioning, and ventilating systems accompanied alterations.

Preservation of the Custom House has attracted much public attention. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places, and it was one of the earliest designations of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission for both exterior and public interior spaces.

The Custom House was designed by the prominent architect Cass Gilbert and constructed between 1902 and 1907. It incorporates Beaux Arts and City Beautiful Movement planning principles and combinations of architecture, engineering, and fine arts. Lavish sculptures, paintings, and decorations by well-known artists of the time, such as Daniel Chester French, embellish the facade, the two-story entry portico, the main hall parallel to the facade, the Rotunda, and the Collector's Reception Room.

The preservation of this fine art was accomplished by an unusual series of subcontracts. Preliminary investigations revealed that much artwork had been executed in unique materials and complex applications, some of which had deteriorated over time. Thus, careful research was necessary before restoration could even begin. (For example, murals painted by Regional Marsh in the Rotunda were on a special sand-rich plaster too delicate to be cleaned and requiring conservation treatments.) Selected fine arts conservators bid on restoring particular works. Each conservator surveyed his task, recommended materials and methods, tested the approach, and completed the job under the eye of recognized experts. Each step of restoration was documented, and copies of the compiled research were given to the U.S. General Services Administration and to the National Archives.
Daniel Chester French

For much of its history, New York City has been the most significant port city in the United States of America. Before a federal income tax was imposed in 1916, a primary source of revenue for the federal government was custom duty. With New York City the country's most active port, New York has had a Custom House since the country's founding in in 1781.

In 1899, the United States Department of the Treasury sponsored a competition to build a new U.S. Custom House on a site in Manhattan known as "Bowling Green." This was the site where, in 1626, a group of Dutch settlers "bought" Mahnattan Island from Indians for about $24.00 worth of beads. The competition was won by Cass Gilbert (1859-1934) who hailed from St. Paul, Minnesota. His magnificent Beaux Arts building not only contained the rooms necessary for collection of Custom tariffs, but was designed to show the greatness and grandeur of the United States.

The seven story structure contains 450,000 square feet of space and sits on three city blocks. It was richly decorated inside and out, including dozens of sculptures and carved images which grace the exterior of the building. Construction of the Custom House was begun in 1900 and it was completed in 1907. The building was subsequently abandoned in the 1970's and was scheduled for demolition before being saved and restored in the early 1980's. In 1987, the United States Bancruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York occupied the building and in 1994, the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian took over two floors of the Old Custom House.

Today, the Custom House is surrounded by a crowded grouping of office buildings in lower Manhattan, not far from the site on which the twin towers of the World Trade Center once stood.

Central to Gilbert's design of the Custom House were four separate sculptures to be placed at the front entrance of the Custom House, representing four continents (from left to right) - Asia, America, Europe and Africa. Gilbert asked both Daniel Chester French and August Saint-Gaudens both to submit designs for the scupltures. Saint-Gaudens declined the invitation, citing other work he was occupied with, so French received the commission.

French began designing the sculptures of "Continents" in 1903 and they were completed and installed in 1907 .

Art scholars consider French's "Continents" to be perhaps the best examples of architecture sculpture in the United States. Each of the four "Continents" are rich in imagry

The view from the spot where I spend approximately 23.8% of my week.

I actually cleaned up a bit for this picture, but you can't see the chaos on my desk to the right of the phone, where there are ridiculous piles of spreadsheets and maps and brochures and a stack of about 30 CDs that's threatening to tip over.

You also can't see the other four music/show posters in my cube, along with eight additional plants, five Steve Keene paintings, five framed postcards, two calendars, an end table covered with a collection of bath & body works lotions, a tower of london snowglobe, a picture of my parents in a frame my mom decorated with sand, a sandcastle, an armadillo, an otter, and you know... a bunch of other crap.

What? I used to have a big office before I moved to this building... and I didn't want to take this stuff home.
