Armitage's Vines and Climbers: A Gardener's Guide to the Best Vertical Plants

Climbing plants are a largely untapped resource for today's gardeners. Because their habit of growth is primarily vertical, they can be used to provide privacy, screen eyesores, and draw the eye upward to create the illusion of space.

In Armitage’s Vines and Climbers, renowned horticulturist Allan Armitage selects and profiles the most useful and attractive climbing plants for a wide variety of sites and conditions. The choices include both woody and herbaceous plants, both annuals and perennials. Profiles for more than 115 plants include a general description, hardiness, plant family, best method of propagation, method of climbing, and the etymology of botanical and common names. Climbing plants add an extra dimension to gardening - literally.

By following Armitage's sage advice, gardeners and designers will be well equipped to create dazzling gardens that transcend the boundaries of horizontality.

Clivia Flower, "Winter Lily" (File:IMG 1351)

Clivia Flower,

Common Name: Clivia or Kaffir lily
Botanic Name: Clivia miniata

Clivia is also known as "Winter Lily" because of its winter blooming. Clivia is one amongst the most popular lily houseplants which is used to decorate homes, offices, gardens, all over the world. Flowering plants of clivia exhibit a rich bulbous flora. Many societies have been established for giving information about clivia's growth habits and care. The stem of clivia plant is thick and is surrounded by long linear leaves. Clivia flower appears on top, in the form of a beautiful bouquet. Clivia flower is almost similar in appearance to the amaryllis flower, except it is smaller and the cluster has more flowers. A clivia plant grows about 2-3 feet tall. Leaves are produced in an alternate sequence. A well grown, healthy clivia plant can have at least three to four shoots which come up straight from the base point. The clivia flower stalks have no leaves and they may be about 20-inch tall, depending upon the variety of clivia. The flowering stem stalk is always close to the center of the plant, hidden when small, among the rich green foliage.

Winter Hardy Basjoo Banana Plant - Musa - 4

Hardy Basjoo Banana Plant - Musa basjoo. Amazing "hardy tropical" banana for the north or south, though native to the Ryukyu Archipelago which lies between Japan and Taiwan, Musa basjoo is also very common in parts of China. This specimen will survive temperatures as low as -20 if mulched. Full sun with lots of water & fertilizer to achieve the amazing growth rate, but it will do fine in light shade as well. Beautiful deep green clump can grow up to 18' tall or more, and really gives a tropical warm sunny feeling. Great for any place in the garden, especially great around pools or patios, courtyards and wonderful in a border with other colorful perennials & grasses. Fruit will set from white flowers if the tree can achieve over 25-35 leaves in one season and talk about texture, leaves can grow 2'x 6'!!!. Mix with fine and medium textured plants for variety. The starter plant you will receive is growing in a 3" pot.

Flower tower

Flower tower

Front quad with Great Tower, Magdalen College, Oxford

Some background information:

Magdalen College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford in England.

It was founded in 1458 by William of Waynflete, Bishop of Winchester. The founder's statutes included provision for a choral foundation of men and boys (a tradition that has continued to the present day) and made reference to the pronunciation of the name of the college in English. It received another substantial endowment from the estate of Sir John Fastolf of Caister Castle in Norfolk (1380 to 1459). Another unrelated college named Magdalen Hall adjacent to Magdalen College eventually became part of Hertford College.

Regarded by some as one of the most beautiful of the Oxford and Cambridge colleges, Magdalen is also one of the most visited. It stands next to the River Cherwell and has within its grounds a deer park and Addison's Walk. Magdalen College School also lies nearby. The large, square Magdalen Tower is a famous Oxford landmark and it is a tradition since the days of Henry VII that the college choir sings from the top of it at 6 a.m. on May Morning.

The Great Tower was built between 1492 and 1509 by William Orchard. Both hall and chapel were built at similar times, though both have undergone some changes in the intervening years.

The Cloister or Great Quad was built between 1474 and 1480 (also by Orchard) and has been altered several times since then. In 1822 the north side was in bad shape and therefore was knocked down while most of the fellows were away from college. Only a small group of fellows were in favour of demolishing it. It was rebuilt shortly afterwards. In the early 1900s, renovations were performed, and it was returned to a more mediaeval character. Student rooms were installed in the very large roof space in the 1980s.

The New Building was built across a large lawn to the north of the Great Quad in 1733. Its spacious setting is due to the builders' intentions to create an entirely new quad, but only one side was completed. As there are very few student rooms (many being occupied by tutors), they are highly sought after.

The college has four other quads. The irregularly shaped St John's Quad is the first on entering the college. Including the Outdoor Pulpit and the old Grammar Hall it connects to the Great Quad via the Perpendicular Gothic Founder's Tower, which is richly decorated with carvings and pinnacles.

The Chaplain's Quad runs along the side of the Chapel and Hall to the foot of the Great Tower. St Swithun's Quad and Longwall Quad (which contains the Library) date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Both make up the southwest corner of the college. The Grove Buildings are the newest, built in the 1990s in a traditional style.

The list of notable former students of Exeter College includes names like Oscar Wilde, Andrew Lloyd Webber, King Edward VIII, Erwin Schroedinger, William Tyndale and John Betjeman.

Atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury in downtown Toronto [An article from: Atmospheric Environment]

This digital document is a journal article from Atmospheric Environment, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Continuous measurements of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) in downtown Toronto were conducted from June 2001-February 2002. Ambient air was sampled at 3.5 and 7m above ground in a canopy over a sidewalk. The quarter hourly mean concentrations were found at 2.39+/-2.05ngm^-^3 (N=10,658) for the lower sampling level, and 2.57+/-2.39ngm^-^3 (N=10,628) for the upper sampling level. The average of both sampling levels (2.48ngm^-^3) was 60% higher than the average of Canadian background emission (1.55ngm^-^3, Alert). Seasonal concentrations showed the effects of the temperature on the volatilization of Hg^0. Higher GEM was found in the summer time (20 June-19 September) at 3.03+/-2.13ngm^-^3 (lower level) and 3.31+/-2.56ngm^-^3 (upper level) while lower values were observed in the fall (20 September-19 December) at 1.84+/-0.87ngm^-^3 (lower level) and 1.97+/-1.38ngm^-^3 (upper level). Log normal probability distribution of the GEM concentration was verified and the double peak hourly average diurnal distribution of GEM concentration was observed in our study.

Hothouse Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire: A Novel

Hothouse Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire: A Novel

In the heart of New York City, hidden in the back room of an old Laundromat, are nine rare and valuable plants. Hothouse Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire tells the story of this legendary garden, and the distance one woman must travel—from the cold, harsh streets of Manhattan to the lush jungles of the Yucatan Peninsula—to claim what is hers.

Lila Nova lives alone in a plain, white box of an apartment. Recovering from a heartbreaking divorce, Lila’s life is like her home: simple, new, and empty. But when she meets a handsome plant-seller named David Exley, an entire world opens up before her eyes. Late one night Lila stumbles across a strange Laundromat and sees ferns so highly-prized that a tiny cutting can fetch thousands of dollars. She learns about flowers with medicinal properties to rival anything found in drugstores. And she hears the legend of nine mystical plants that bring fame, fortune, immortality, and passion.

The owner of the Laundromat, Armand, presents Lila with a test: if she can make the cutting from a fire fern grow roots, he will show her the secret of his locked room. But Lila is too trusting, and with one terrible mistake she ruins her chance to see Armand’s plants. The only way to win it back is to travel, on her own, to the Yucatan.

Deep in the rain forests of Mexico, Lila enters a world of shamans and spirit animals, snake charmers, and sexy, heart-stopping Huichols. Alone in the jungle, Lila is forced to learn more than she ever wanted to know about nature—and about herself. An exhilarating journey of love and self-discovery, Hothouse Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire brings together mystery, adventure, and heat, in every sense of the word.

Amazon Exclusive: Christina Schwarz Reviews Hothouse Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire

Christina Schwarz is the author of So Long at the Fair, All Is Vanity, and Drowning Ruth, a #1 bestseller in both hardcover and paperback, which was selected for Oprah’s Book Club and optioned by Wes Craven for Miramax. Read her exclusive Amazon guest review of Hothouse Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire:

Debut novelist Margot Berwin gives her fecund imagination free play in this lush and steamy summer read. Recently divorced and craving a blank slate, 30-something advertising copywriter Lila Nova moves into a new studio apartment “with absolutely no character” on Union Square. Lila, the sort of contemporary heroine given to amusing self-deflating wisecracks, is not, however, destined to inhabit a clean, white box for long. Within a few chapters, packed with romantic betrayal, plant lore and a couple of visits to a surreal Laundromat in the East Village, she’s on her way to “high adventure” in the Yucatan rain forest, where she’ll encounter ancient magic, poisonous creatures, a murderous exotic plant dealer, and, yes, true love. A wildly inventive novel as vivid and colorful as a jungle flower.

japanese floral arrangement - The Flowers

The Flowers of Japan and the Art of Floral Arrangement

The Flowers of Japan and the Art of Floral Arrangement

This beautiful and informative book was the first glimpse most Westerners ever had of the Japanese art of ikebana.

Its author, Josiah Conder, was a British architect invited to Japan at the end of the nineteenth century to help create Japan's first Western-style buildings. Conder remained there for the rest of his life, and his love of the country and its culture inspired him to undertake years of study of Japanese Painting, gardens, and flower arrangement.

Conder's classic text-with its eloquent explanation of why certain seasonal flowers should be used, why some are "felicitous" and others "ominous," and how even the simplest-looking arrangement can mean much more than meets the eye-has a great deal to say not only about ikebana but about Japan's sense of ceremony and custom.

Richly illustrated throughout, and with sixteen pages of grand color pictures, this new edition of his pioneering work retains the period feel of the original. For modern enthusiasts of ikebana or of more Western-style flower arranging, the book offers a fascinating insight into the sensibilities that helped form the art, In addition, a wealth of written and pictorial information on the various containers used-bamboo tubes, bronze vases, lacquer ware, and baskets-will appeal to those who have an interest in Oriental antiques.

And to place all this in context, Paula Pryke-the author of Flowers, Flowers!-and Joseph LaPenta, a Tokyo-based ikebana scholar, provide opening commentaries.

Commercial Tulip History

1574 - Selim II of Turkey sent an order to the Sherriff of Aziz for 50,000 bulbs. There is no doubt that commercial production of this plant was in full swing in Turkey at this time if that was the size of orders they could handle.

While the first "tulipmania" was in Holland in 1634-37, a second and equally interesting one occured in Turkey during the reign of Ahmed III in 1702-20. In both countries, bulbs were sold for incredible prices and fortunes made (and lost) overnight on speculating in bulbs.

There are entire books written about these "tulipmanias" that need not be repeated in a short history.

One brief story I will pass along is that during World War Two, the Dutch Royal Family fled to Ottawa, Canada as a safe haven. When the future Queen was to be born, the Canadian government passed a law making the hospital area officially Dutch Territory so the baby girl could be born on Dutch soil. In gratitude, the family has been sending tulips to Ottawa for years now and the Ottawa Tulip Festival with its over 1 million blooms is one of the finest shows outside of Holland.

“Time doesn't always heal: it just breathes and swallows memories like the seasons change - sending showers; beating flowers into the mud. And nothing is forever in this place."

As much as i want to think that i'm healed, sometimes i lie awake at night with terrible memories of France and Kitchens and Disappointments spinning in my head and i wonder if it will always be like this, me trying so hard to dance in the flowers, only to be consumed by the mud all over again. It is a new season, but i'm still fighting to breath, when will it ever be sunny again?

Slip into stylish simplicity. Here is my newest design, a pair of White Marissa Dyeables Shoes painted with surrounding delphiniums in yellow ,orange, rust and paprika..I painted them previously on ivory to make the shoes water resistant. A great option if you are afraid your shoe dye could be ruined by weather conditions.
The understated style of the Marissa Dyeable Pump will complement any special occasion with versatile elegance. A petite peep toe, low-cut collar, and closed back are complemented by a slight platform and subtly tapered heel.
The Floral and nature inspired design displayed by the Delphinium represents always a stately, perennial elegance that is a standard in English cottage gardens and gives them a look of understated glamour. In this model I used a technique exalting the strokes of paint to project an Auguste Renoir styled painting.Ivory background.

Camel walk n a bath

Camel walk n a bath

Pushkar, 2010

The Pushkar Fair, or Pushkar ka Mela, is the annual five-day camel and livestock fair, held in the 5th most sacred Hindu Pilgrimage town of Pushkar in the state of Rajasthan, India. It is one of the world's largest camel fairs, and apart from buying and selling of livestock; it is also the time when the varied art of colorful Rajasthan is exhibited in front of the curious visitors. Held each November at the time of the Kartik Purnima full moon, Pushkar Camel Fair is one of India’s most highly-rated travel experiences, a spectacle on an epic scale, attracting 500,000 people and up to 50,000 camels, cattle and horses.

A few miles north of Aimer is the sacred town of Pushkar (Lotus), situated on the shores of a jewel like glacial lake. Dun colored temple topped hills and sandy fields surround the town. This sacred town of the Hindus, also known as the Lourdes of the East is one of the oldest cities in India, with its origins unknown, but legends associated with Lord Brahma being the creator himself. While some legends state that Brahma performed penance here for 60,000 years to have a glimpse of Vishnu, others state, Brahma was in search of a place for Mahayagna [Sacred Fire based Hindu Ritual] and he found this place suitable. After a long time, Brahma came to known that a demon, Vajranash, was killing people here so the Lord intoned a sacred chant on a lotus flower and killed the demon. During this process, the parts of flower fell in three places, which were later known as Jyaistha, Madhya and Kanistha Pushkar. Post this Brahma performed a yagna to protect this place from demons. The consort of Brahma, Saraswati, was needed to offer Ahuti for the yagna but as she was not present at that time. Instead Gayatri, a Gurjar girl, was married to Brahma to performed the ritual. This act angered the first wife of Brahma, Saraswati, and she cursed Brahma saying that he would be only worshiped in Pushkar.
Pushkar, therefore is commonly (but erroneously) said to be the only town in India housing a temple to Lord Brahma. With the legend, also grew the folklore around the Lake, where people started believing that the Lake of Pushkar is so holy that the Greatest Sinner, by bathing in it, earns the delight to Paradise.

Pushkar also gets mentions in the sacred Hindu Scriptures. The Ramayan mentions Pushkar and says that sage Vishvamitra meditated here. It further says that the apsara Menaka came to Pushkar to bathe in its sacred waters. The Mahabharata also states, while laying down a programme for Maharaja Yudhishthara’s travel, “Maharaja after entering the Jungles of Sind and crossing the small rivers on the way should bathe in Pushkara". And, as per Vaman Purana, Prahlada on his pilgrimage to holy places visited Pushkarayana.

A Gurjara Pratihara (Gurjar) ruler of Mandore, Nahadarava, restored this sacred town in the seventh century. He rebuilt old palaces and built twelve dharmashalas (resting places) and ghats on three sides of the lake. According to Rajputana Gazetteer Pushkar was held by Chechi Gurjars (Gujjars) till about 700 years ago. Later some shrines got occupied by Kanphati Jogis. The sage Parasara is also said to have been born here. The famous temple of Jeenmata has been cared for by Parasara Brahmans [descendants of sage Parasara] for the last 1,000 years.

The city today houses over 400 temples instead of the principal five. (Dedicated to Brahma, Savitri, Badri-Narayan, Varha & Siva Atmateshwara). The lake is encompassed by 52 ghats where devotees flock to take the Holy Dip.

Normally quiet, Pushkar sees a small but steady stream of visitors to its temples and wide bathing steps leading down to the lake. But once a year, at the time of the Karthik Poornima full moon in November, the town explodes with colorful crowds of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims. This also forms the stage for the Annual Pushkar Camel Fair.

Lotus Temple

Lotus Temple

© Charu Sharma
The Baha'i House of Worship in Delhi, India, popularly known as the Lotus Temple due to its flowerlike shape, is a Baha'i House of Worship and also a prominent attraction in Delhi. It was completed in 1986 and serves as the Mother Temple of the Indian subcontinent. It has won numerous architectural awards and been featured in hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles.
As with all other Baha'i Houses of Worship, the Lotus Temple is open to all regardless of religion, or any other distinction, as emphasized in Baha'i texts. The Baha'i laws emphasize that the spirit of the House of Worship be that it is a gathering place where people of all religions may worship God without denominational restrictions.[2] The Baha'i laws also stipulate that only the holy scriptures of the Baha'i Faith and other religions can be read or chanted inside in any language; while readings and prayers can be set to music by choirs, no musical instruments can be played inside. Furthermore no sermons can be delivered, and there can be no ritualistic ceremonies practiced.
All Baha'i Houses of Worship, including the Lotus Temple, share certain architectural elements, some of which are specified by Baha'i scripture. `Abdu'l-Baha, the son of the founder of the religion, stipulated that an essential architectural character of a House of Worship be that it requires to have a nine-sided circular shape.[3] Inspired by the lotus flower, its design is composed of 27 free-standing marble clad "petals" arranged in clusters of three to form nine sides.[4] While all current Baha'i Houses of Worship have a dome, they are not regarded as an essential part of their architecture.[5] Baha'i scripture also states that no pictures, statues or images be displayed within the House of Worship and no pulpits or altars be incorporated as an architectural feature (readers may stand behind simple portable lecture stands).[2] The nine doors of the Lotus Temple open onto a central hall, capable of holding up to 2,500 people. The central hall is slightly more than 40 meters tall[6] and its surface is made of white marble. The white marbles are from Penteli mountain in Greece, the very same from which many of the ancient monuments were built and also many other Bahai temples[7]. The House of Worship, along with the nine surrounding ponds and the gardens around comprise 26 acres (105,000 m?; 10.5 ha).

The site is in the village of Bahapur, in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. The architect was an Iranian, who now lives in Canada, named Fariborz Sahba. He was approached in 1976 to design it, later oversaw its construction and saved money from the construction budget to build a greenhouse to study which indigenous plants and flowers would be appropriate for the site.[8] The major part of the funds needed to buy this land was donated by Ardishir Rustampur of Hyderabad, who gave his entire life savings for this purpose in 1953.

Since its inauguration to public worship in December 1986, the Baha'i House of Worship in Delhi has, as of late 2002, attracted more than 50 million visitors, making it one of the most visited buildings in the world.[10] Its numbers of visitors during those years surpassed those of the Eiffel Tower and the Taj Mahal. On Hindu holy days, it has drawn as many as 150,000 people; it welcomes four million visitors each year (about 13,000 every day or 9 every minute).

This House of Worship is generally referred to as the "Lotus Temple". In India, during the Hindu festival Durga Puja, several times a replica of the Lotus Temple has been made as a pandal, a temporary structure set up to venerate the goddess Durga.[11] In Sikkim a permanent replica is of the Hindu Legship Mandir, dedicated to Shiva
