2011 institutional investment report - The Chestnut

The Chestnut and Cedar Stock Report: Investment Handbook for Young Adults

The Chestnut and Cedar Stock Report: Investment Handbook for Young Adults

The first thing to hit your eyes when you see this book's cover is, "I can make 1.29 million in forty years! 2.87 million in fifty years!!" Wow! What? Forty years? Fifty years!? Whom is the author kidding? Will I be around for fifty more years? That's half a century, practically. Why would you, the young investor, think you need to plan ahead that long? Why indeed? The payoff is great - but investing $5,000 every year, and not touching your money for forty years? Fifty years? Is this really NECESSARY??? MORE THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE! The U.S. Census Bureau reports that the average life expectancy of the baby boomers is 74 years for men and 79 years for women, WORKING AN AVERAGE 40 YEARS. Just following the trend (by linear extrapolation) established in the last century, today's 25-45 year-olds, the "X" generation, will live an average of 101 years and 108 years respectively, AND SPEND 50-60 YEARS OF THEM WORKING. If you belong to the leading edge of the "Y" generation, starting off on your own, or looking for work, your chances of living for 120 years to ETERNITY are better than 80%. Don't believe me? Read "Fantastic Voyage: Live Long Enough to Live Forever" from Ray Kurzweil. Do you need the author's advice? You bet your savings!

Alex & Me: How a Scientist and a Parrot Discovered a Hidden World of Animal Intelligence--and Formed a Deep Bond in the Process

"You be good. I love you," were Alex's final words to his owner, research scientist Irene Pepperberg, before his premature death at age thirty-one on September 6, 2007. An African Grey parrot, Alex had a brain the size of a shelled walnut, yet he could add, sound out words, understand concepts like bigger, smaller, more, fewer, and none, and he disproved the widely accepted idea that birds possess no potential for language or anything remotely comparable to human intelligence. Alex & Me is the remarkable true account of an amazing, irascible parrot and his best friend who stayed together through thick and thin for thirty years—the astonishing, moving, and unforgettable story of a landmark scientific achievement and a beautiful relationship.

Curry Fiesta

Curry Fiesta

Taken for the friday food fiesta (Curry week)

It was a tough decision again this week. I did thai green curry not too long ago and also didnt wanted to have japanese curry because everyone seem to be eating that this week so I thought I'll go with something a bit more uncommon.

The golden pillow was going to be my first choice. That's traditional chicken curry that wrapped in a oil paper parcel, wrapped in bread dough and baked. The bread is broke open and the parcel unwrapped and its basically eaten using the bread layer as a dip. However, when I tried to order that yesterday, I was told they were all sold out.

I went for Indian curry tonight as a last attempt to take something for this week's theme. This is dinner at Samy curry in dempsey road. A quaint little eating place where the food is served on banana leaves and where the dishes of the day are brought to be looked at in little metal pots. We had mutton curry, fish head curry and tandoori chicken on a mix of white rice, briyani rice and side dishes of yoghurt cucumber, chickpea curry and papadams. All that is washed down by freshly squeezed ice cold lime juice.

Barbara Boxer For Senator!

Barbara Boxer For Senator!

SENATOR BARBARA BOXER IS A PROMINENT ASSET FOR CALIFORNIA WHO HAS BEEN FOCUSING ON GETTING THE PEOPLE BACK TO WORK. SHE IS ALSO A STRONG VOICE FOR THE AMENDMENT TO THE PATIENT & PROTECTION AND AFFORDABLE CARE ACT FOR WOMEN.

What make Senator Barbara Boxer stand out in the Senate race is that she is not the aggressive liar like her Republican opponents. And not because she is not going all out aggressively doesn't mean she is not focusing her interests toward the people of California. It just mean that she spent more of her time getting things together that needed to be done in order to get the people of California back to work. And to build our State economic foundation stronger so that it can regain back it's prosperity status that the Republicans have destroy.

California has fallen backward because the so-call leaders, Republicans fail to put the American people first and foremost before politics.

Senator Barbara Boxer has been in the Senate for some-time because she always put the people of California first before politics. Republicans go around spending millions of dollars on deceitful ADS, and there is no real substance behind those big campaign spending.

When Senator Barbara Boxer will begin her campaign, she will be spending her money on honesty and integrity with substance to prove that she is not just an empty barrel making a lot of noise like her opponent Republicans who do not have nothing much to show what they have done to help the people of California in these difficult times.

One of Senator Barbara Boxer top priorities in the United State Senate is creating jobs. That is why She supported the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which has already created and saved more than 2 million jobs. She has been working every day to enact a jobs agenda in which is about to take effect.

As Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW), Senator Barbara Boxer has been working to make California the biggest job creator. As with our economy new clean energy that is now in progress will create thousands of jobs; rebuilding our roads, bridges, highways water and transit systems. She has also worked with her other Senators colleagues to introduce legislation to help small Businesses get the loans and tax breaks they need to expand and to create millions more jobs across America.

On February 24, 2010, the Senate passed the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act, the first in a series of bills to create jobs. This vote was a breakthrough that should send a signal of hope to the families of America. As this was a great sign of hope for the many Americans.

Senator Barbara Boxer and her other Democrat Senators colleagues always put jobs first before politics.

As Chairman of EPW, she also led the successful effort to include key infrastructure investments in this bill. As a result, the HIRE Act will extend the current federal highway bill and the Build America Bonds program, thereby enabling California and other cash-strapped states to save or create well over a million jobs by moving forward with much-needed projects to build and repair our highways, roads, and bridges.

Senator Barbara Boxer has also spoke on the Senate floor in support of legislation to improve coverage of women preventative health services and lower the costs of health care for women. This amendment to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act would require all health plans to cover comprehensive women preventative care and screenings – and to cover these recommended services at no cost to women. The Senate passed the Mikulski amendment on December 3, 2009 by a vote of 61 to 39.

Senator Barbara Boxer is a very important asset to California especially in the critical condition that our State is in. This is not a time for politics drama as this something that Senator Barbara Boxer strongly abhor. She is more focus and concern for the people of American and getting them back to work and to restoring our economic.

Senators like Barbara Boxer is what our Nation need, so please continue your support for her as she is one of our Nation's greatest asset.

FOR SENATOR BARBARA BOXER, "THE AMERICAN PEOPLE FIRST!"

PLEASE SUPPORT SENATOR BARBARA BOXER FOR SENATE

AMERICA NOW KNOWS WHAT THE "BUMP" IN THE ROAD LOOKS LIKE

AMERICA NOW KNOWS WHAT THE

The White House downplayed a disappointing May jobs report Friday that showed unemployment inched up to 9.1 percent, with President Obama’s chief economist Austan Goolsbee calling the latest number one of the “bumps on the road to recovery.”

Labor Department data released Friday morning revealed a sluggish economy that added just 54,000 jobs — far less than April’s 244,000 increase.

Mr. Goolsbee said unemployment is still “unacceptably high,” but defended the president’s economic policies as having staved off an even worse outcome.

“The initiatives put in place by this administration — such as the payroll tax cut and business incentives for investment — have contributed to solid employment growth overall this year, but this report is a reminder of the challenges that remain,” wrote Mr. Goolsbee, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, in a blog post on the White House website.

The poor jobs picture has dogged Mr. Obama since his inauguration, and helped propel Republicans in the 2010 elections to control of the House and to significant gains in the Senate.

Now, with Congress divided, both sides traded blame for the weakening numbers.

“Under President Obama’s watch, Washington has tied the hands of small business owners with regulations that have made it harder to grow, and has spent money that it doesn’t have, leading to sustained unemployment over 8 percent and a national debt of more than $14 trillion,” said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Virginia Republican. “It is astounding that despite the warning signs and economic indicators, President Obama and congressional Democrats still have failed to offer any concrete plan to create jobs, reduce our debt or grow our economy.”

But Mr. Goolsbee warned that monthly jobs numbers are volatile, and are often revised later.

“It is important not to read too much into any one monthly report,” he said.

He also said the new report shows the private sector has added jobs for 15 straight months, for a total of 2.1 million, which he said is a good “overall trajectory.”

Mr. Obama is likely to address the jobs report in remarks later Friday at a Chrysler plant in Toledo, Ohio.

Democrats on Capitol Hill said the poor employment picture shows Republicans have been too focused on cutting spending and have not spent enough time backing government policies that produce jobs.

“While we can’t wave a wand and magically bring down the unemployment rate, policymakers can and must continue to invest in innovation, education and our nation’s infrastructure,” said Sen. Bob Casey, Pennsylvania Democrat and chairman of Congress’s Joint Economic Committee.

Still, the $830 billion Recovery Act, which Mr. Obama signed into law in 2009, failed to meet initial expectations, and has soured many lawmakers’ appetite for more government spending to boost the economy.

Before the stimulus passed, the White House projected it would ensure that unemployment would never top 8 percent, and said by May 2011 the rate would have dropped below 7 percent.

Instead, the rate has ticked up three tenths of a percent in the last two months, once again exceeding 9 percent.

Kirby Windows

Kirby Windows

Corner of the Kirby Building aka Home Sweet Home. The Kirby Building faces Akard & Main Streets in Downtown Dallas. The architectural firm of Barnett, Hayes, & Barnett of St. Louis designed this 17 story Gothic Revival (original 17 story structure) and Art Deco (annex built in 1925) skyscraper. Lang & Witchell of Dallas were the associate architects. The facades of the Kirby were created with tera cotta. The terra cotta has many fine details, shapes, and images within its sculptural relief in friezes, panels, cornices, and finials. The Kirby was originally built in 1913 to supplement the Adolphus Hotel (corner of Commerce and Akard). In 1999, the Kirby Building was converted into 156 apartments by architects Corgan Associates of Dallas.

In a 1985 article on the building, Texas Monthly editor Gregory Curtis noted, "It's beautiful, the most beautiful office building of its era remaining in Dallas, perhaps in all Texas."

Adolphus Busch, for whom it was constructed, died in 1913, the same as year as the building was completed. His heirs sold the property five years later to the Kirby Investment Company of Houston, headed by lumber magnate John Henry Kirby (1860-1940), a major figure in Texas finance for half a century. The Kirby interests sold the property in 1941, but the Kirby name has continued to be used. Thus for over 75 years, the property has been known popularly in Dallas as the Kirby Building, the Busch connection known to a very few. Acknowledging the great prominence of both Adolphus Busch and John Henry Kirby, it was designated the Busch-Kirby Building in the National Register of Historic Places.

Cityplace proposal (half built)

Cityplace proposal (half built)

Unveiled in 1983 by the Southland Corporation (they owned 7-11 stores, amongst other things) the Cityplace project was a forest of terra cotta towers sitting on 132 acres of prime property just northeast of downtown. The total investment in the mixed use project by Southland was estimated to be $3 billion. The city was wary of approving the project and negotiated with Southland for years. The company threatened, if not approved, to move all of Cityplace to the suburbs. Southland eventually agreed to build new housing units, pay $1 million for new landing equipment at Love Field, and improve dozens of streets and sidewalks. The city approved the plan January 1985. Construction of the first Cityplace tower began in February of 1985, but during construction the real estate market collapsed. The tower's exterior was completed in the fall of 1988, but the building was not officially opened until May 1989. The project completely bankrupted Southland and threatened the very existence of 7-11, which eventually was purchased by a Japanese Company.

A retired Southland executive owns a bookstore in McKinney and I learned from him that all of the red facing stone Southland and purchased for the second tower is sitting in a big pile in a field in Seagoville now.

Me... Hi y'all! vt6

I was goofing around and made this shot... in October 2007. I've gained a few pounds since then, mostly (translate: exclusively) because I stopped my exercise regimen, which was twice weekly, 100 jumping jacks, 50 deep knee bends, and a 2 mile run, followed with weight lifting. Actually, at the time, I was considering participating in a 5k fun run - the Cotton Row Run.

I should do that again. I really enjoyed it. Plus, I could wear my nice Hart, Schaffner & Marx, and Austin Reed clothing.

You know what they say about a well-dressed man!

UNHCR advises refugees in Burundi against returning to eastern Congo.

BUJUMBURA, Burundi, October 5 (UNHCR) – The UN refugee agency has advised some 2,300 Congolese refugees at a camp in central Burundi to shelve plans to return this week to South Kivu province in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) because of conflict in the area.

"Due to the ongoing military operations [by the Congolese armed forces against rebel forces] in their areas of origin, UNHCR has urged the refugees not to go back for the moment," a UNHCR spokesperson said. "We have underlined to those planning to repatriate that, under the prevailing security conditions, neither the government authorities in the DRC nor UNHCR would be in a position to guarantee their safety upon return or to assist them in any other way."

The Congolese refugees at Gihinga camp, Mwaro province, originate mainly from South Kivu's Uvira region bordering Burundi. UNHCR, in cooperation with the Burundian government, had planned to move them to a new camp in Bwagiriza, eastern Burundi, as part of a camp consolidation programme. But only 264 agreed to moved, while about 2,300 refugees said they would instead return to the DRC this week.

UNHCR is concerned that the safety of the refugees could be threatened if they return to South Kivu at a time of insecurity in parts of the province. The Congolese refugees said they feared for their safety in Bwagiriza because of its proximity to what they claim is a rival Congolese community in nearby Tanzania.

Despite UNHCR assurances that the camp was at a safe distance from the border, the refugees said they preferred to return to South Kivu and informed local Burundian authorities of their planned departure this week.

"We support return as the preferred solution for any refugee. However, the conditions for organized voluntary repatriation to eastern DRC do not exist at present. We have already been forced to suspend the repatriation operation to eastern DRC earlier this year because of the ongoing military operations," the UNHCR spokesperson said.

UNHCR's office in Burundi assists and provides protection to some 30,000 mostly Congolese refugees living in three refugee camps, as well as in urban areas.

65-365 (Year 5) Tax return

65-365 (Year 5) Tax return

I haven't filled in a tax return for a long time but a couple of months ago l got a letter from Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs telling me that I must fill in a form. However, no form was included with the letter; they said it would be more convenient to fill it in on-line. As l have no desire to make things more convenient for HMRC I 'phoned and (after the usual delay when ringing such organisations - press one for … etc "All our operators are busy …" etc) I spoke to a young woman and asked for a form. She said one would be sent - but it wasn't. What was sent was another letter telling me, on pain of heavy penalties, to fill in a form - but no form. So I wrote to them asking for a form. No form appeared in my post.
Recently I came across the letters saying that I must fill in the form so I rang again - with the usual delays. A young man assured me that a form would be sent. "However," he said,"The forms are sent from another office and they only send them out on Thursdays and as the Post Office don't like to handle too many at a time there may be a delay before you receive one."
Well, after this Pythonesque conversation, I did receive a form with a covering letter from the department - individually written to me and signed with a real pen. The notes to which the form alluded were not included, neither was the addressed envelope which was mentioned. Nevertheless l filled in the form and sent it off.
Today I got another form together with the notes, which I am told I must read carefully before filling in the form. The penalty for sending the form in one day late is ?100, "Even if you have no tax to pay or you have already paid all the tax you owe."
As one would not like to guarantee that anything sent to their office would actually be found I thought it best to fill the form in again.
What fun :)
