Narrator and hero are one and the same. This not unfamiliar maneuver gives a quasi-autobiographical impact. The text itself is equally far from the polished banality of more highly publicized writers. All John Howard Reid’s novels have a jerky, rugged style which is quite deliberate and well integrated with the events and their treatment. The hero is a police sergeant, both tough and nervous, who confronts delusory situations, treacherous friends and extreme conditions with a uniformly passive, if intriguing response. Reid’s methods and tone are certainly unusual… His novels are too solidly real to be classified as mere mysteries, yet, although the aura is highly strained, they seem not searching enough to be regarded as true psychological thrillers. A good deal is made of police technique and attitudes, and perhaps this awkward mixture of thick skin and real sensitivity, is what it actually feels like for honest police officers. Reid’s serious edge and weight certainly command respect, although perhaps not yet totally unqualified applause. "Beachfront Holiday" is a good deal more assured than the earlier novels, although "The Health Farm Murders" has fast-moving dramatic action. Thanks to Reid, and other writers, crime fiction by Australian authors is steadily becoming more widely recognized as a reality.
