Grevillea flower
The grevillea called Grevillea ‘Superb’ has salmon-coloured flowers that are quite magnificent. Grevilleas are native to Australia, and this hybrid bridges the continent because it's the product of a hybridisation between a Queensland native, Grevillea banksii, which has white flowers, and a Western Australian native, Grevillea bipinnatifida which has red flowers. The intermediary coloured flowers are the result of the hybridisation, a lovely salmon pink colour.
The flower heads are called racemes. They consist of a series of individual flowers along an elongated stem. These open in succession, which means you get a really long flowering time from any one flower head.
But there is something better than that about this plant. This is a plant that flowers for much of the year. And, given that it produces nectar and attracts both birds and bees, it's a plant that's going to give lots of interest.
It's a superb garden plant for its flowers alone. But it also has wonderful foliage which is beautifully divided and has a lovely textural quality. So its foliage gives just as much reward as the flowers. It grows to between one and a half and two metres, and can be lightly pruned. And like all the grevilleas choose a native plant fertiliser and avoid using a fertiliser that's high in phosphorus. It likes a sunny, well drained position and will tolerate moderate frosts. It grows well in tubs, and it's a really an outstanding garden plant for all its many virtues.
