Red Hot Chili Peppers su nastali daleke 1983 godine kad su se upoznali Anthony Kiedis (vokal) i Michael "Flea" Balzary u srednjoj skoli i odlucili osnovati bend. Uskoro su se bendu pridruzili Hillel Slovak i Jack Irons i poceli su svirati po L.A.-u. Nisu bili instant uspjeh ali su postali zapazeni zbog svojih ludih i neponovljivih nastupa i bizarnog odjevanja (obicavali su nastupati samo sa carapa na "strateskim" mjestima). Tijekom prvih godina clanovi benda su se stalno mijenjali, a bend je skoro totalno propao kad su pretrpjeli smrt jednog od svojih suosnivaca i prijatelja Hillela Slovaka 1988, koji se je predozirao heroinom.Godinu dana poslije smrti Hillela Slovaka i odlaska bubnjara Jacka Ironsa, Red Hot Chili Peppers uspjevaju zainteresirati javnost svojim cetvrtim albumom Mother's Milk sa novim clanovima, gitarist tek 18-godisnjak John Frusciante i bubnjar Chad Smith. Poslije toga su Peppersi, 1991. objavili svoj globalno uspjesni album Blood Sugar Sex Magik, koji je imao mainstream hitove poput Under The Bridge i Give It Away. Nakon toga odlazi gitarist John Frusciante skrhan drogom, a na njegovo mjesto poslije silnih izmjena dolazi ex-Jane's Addiction Dave Navarro. Izdaju 1995. album One Hot Minute koji nije dobro prosao sa kritikama, ali fanovi ga duboko cijene zbog drugacijeg stila. 4 godine kasnije, 1999., John Frusciante se vraca u bend poslije 5, skoro fatalnih predoziranja, ostavlja se droge pronalazi novi zivot u meditaciji i donosi novu kemiju u bend. Tako nastaje veliki comeback album Californication, iznimno hvaljen i od publike i od kriticara. Iste i naredne godine kupe sve moguce nagrade za svoj uspjeh i za pridonos glazbenoj umjetnosti U studenom 2001 decki se vracaju u studio poslije turneja sa Foo Fightersima i Pearl Jamom i u ljeto 2002 objavili su svoj dugo ocekivani osmi studijski album By The Way. Iako su neki kriticari mislili da su se Peppersi smeksali, oni koji su pogledali ispod povrsine uocili su zrelost u tekstovima i kvalitetu u glazbi.
