Repairing a tear

The face of a painting at our studio. The painting has a long horizontal tear through the middle of the image. The tear opened up about an inch (we suspect that the painting was under cardboard or in a box and accidentally sliced through with a sharp knife.) Exposure to moisture and temperature changes caused the canvas to shrink and as a result the slash opened up about an inch.

As the slice runs through the image we cannot simply inlay a new piece of canvas as the image is distorted. We must close the opening. A tension system has been set up to provide a constant and adjustable pull on the opening. Every few hours we moisten the canvas and tighten the clamps and slowly pull the tear closed.
