Algosoo

Algosoo

Captured today in Lock 7 Welland Canal.

Built by Collingwood Shipyards, Collingwood, ON as their hull # 206 at a reported cost of $14.5 million (CN); the keel was laid on July 16, 1973 for this Great Lakes self-unloading bulk carrier. She was launched July 24, 1974 and was christened at the shipyard on November 26, 1974 by Mrs. John Rhodes as the Algosoo (2) for the Algoma Central Railway, Marine Division, Sault Ste. Marie, ON. Mrs. Rhodes was the wife of The Honourable John Rhodes, Minister of Transportation and Communication for the Province of Ontario. With the Canadian Government subsidizing the new ships built at Canadian yards, the cost of the Algosoo net of subsidies was approximately $11.8 million (CN). The Algosoo and her slightly newer fleetmate Algolake are considered almost sister ships with their hull designs and machinery being very similar; the main difference being the Algolake having been built with all accommodations and wheelhouse aft. The Algosoo was the last traditional styled laker (straight-decker or self-unloader) built on the Great Lakes.

The Algosoo is powered by two Crossley Pielstick 10PC2V single acting, four stroke cycle V-10 cylinder 4,500 b.h.p. (3,310 KW) diesel engines built by Crossley Premier Engines, Manchester, England; these engines burning intermediate grade 40 fuel. The engines are mounted side-by-side facing forward with the drive shafts feeding into a gear reduction box. From the gear reduction box, the single propeller shaft passes back between the two engines to the stern to a four blade KaMeWa 17-foot (5.18m) diameter controllable pitch propeller in a Kort nozzle. The Algosoo's rated service speed is 15 m.p.h.. She is fitted with a 1,000 h.p. (736 KW) KaMeWa electric drive bow thruster.

The self-unloader's 5 holds are serviced by 23 hatches. The vessel is capable of carrying 32,100 tons (32,614 mt) at a mid summer draft of 29' 00 5/8" (8.855m) and approximately 28,381 tons (28,837 mt) at the new Seaway draft of 26' 06" (8.08m) implemented in 2004. The Algosoo's cubic capacity allows her to carry 28,400 net tons of coal. (Coal is measured in net tons, the equivalents being 25,357 tons or 25,764 mt.) Her self-unloading equipment consists of a 3-belt gravity system with a stern-mounted loop belt elevator feeding a 252-foot (76.81m) discharge boom that can be swung 95 degrees to port or starboard. The designed discharge rate is 5,354 tons (5,440 mt) per hour. The Algosoo's other capacities include 445 tons (452 mt) of fuel oil, 84.6 tons (86 mt) of diesel oil, 88.6 tons (90 mt) of potable water, and 17,631 tons (17,914 mt) of water ballast. Her wheelhouse equipment includes 2 Differential Global Positioning Systems (DGPS), 1 Decca radar, 1 Sperry radar, 1 ECDIS (electronic charts), 1 Sperry Gyro compass, 1 magnetic compass, 2 VHF marine radios, and last but not least, a coffee maker. Safety equipment includes 1 Shepherd boat, 2 - 25 person life rafts, 50 life jackets, 35 survival suits, 36 fire extinguishers, 36 fire fighting stations with hoses and hydrants, 6 fireman's suits, 10 life rings, 12 parachute flares, and 4 rocket line-throwing apparatus

On December 23, 2000 the Algosoo was in collision with the Canadian Coast Guard ice breaker Griffon while being freed from ice near the Toledo Channel in Lake Erie. The Algosoo proceeded to Hamilton, ON arriving December 26, 2000 for repairs to the minor damage and for winter lay up. On April 18, 2002, the vessel received a cargo of coal from the crippled fleetmate Algowood following that vessel's grounding in the St. Marys River near Mission Point in heavy fog on April 15, 2002. The Algowood was freed from her strand on April 17 and moved to the Carbide Dock at Sault Ste. Marie where the cargo transfer took place. The coal was bound for Nanticoke, ON from Superior, WI. Further, on August 11, 2002; a bow thruster failure at Clarkson, ON resulted in the Algosoo sliding over her dropped anchor. Bow damage included dents, gashes, and a couple of small holes. The vessel proceeded to the Verrault Shipyard in Les Mechins, QC for repair (the closest shipyard available at that time). The anchor was replaced later in Hamilton. Then on August 25, 2007, the Algosoo was in contact with the general cargo carrier Beluga Recognition while the latter was exiting Lock 1 of the Welland Canal. The salty is preparing to go to berth while the Algosoo was waiting for the lock. The Algosoo was in transit to Sandusky, OH at the time. Both vessels received only superficial minor damage

Cycle safety youngsters get the chance to scoop top prize.

Safety conscious youngsters cycling around Northenden, Brooklands and Baguley during the summer holiday could end up scooping top prizes.

Manchester City Council’s Community Safety Co-ordinator and the neighbourhood policing team have launched a joint initiative to encourage youngsters to wear a cycling helmet when they are out on their bikes.

Police Community Support Officers (PCSO’s) who spot youngsters following simple cycle safety rules, like wearing a helmet, will have their names entered into a prize draw.

The lucky entrants will then have a chance of winning a Nintendo Wii console or enjoying a days off road cycle safety course.

Free bike locks and security marking will also be offered by the PSCO’s during the school holidays.

Councillor Richard Cowell, Manchester City Council’s executive member for the environment, said the aim of the scheme is to encourage and reward good cycling safety.

“We launched the scheme in a joint initiative with the police as a way to address residents concerns about young people not wearing the correct safety equipment.

“The scheme is already proving popular and we hope it will be a great success during the summer.”

Neighbourhood Inspector for Northenden, Debbie Robson, said the competition is a great way for the youngsters in the area to get to know their local PCSO’s and learn more about the importance of road safety.

“Wearing a helmet while out cycling could save a life.

“The Neighbourhood Policing Team at Northenden and our partners are working hard to engage with young people in the area. I am sure from the response so far that this competition will be a success.”

The 2011 Report on Turn Rolls, Head and Tail Stock, Weld Head Manipulators, Seamers, and Other Positioning and Manipulating Arc Welding Equipment ... Equipment: World Market Segmentation by City

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a "borderless world", cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market.

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world's major cities for "turn rolls, head and tail stock, weld head manipulators, seamers, and other positioning and manipulating arc welding equipment excluding electrodes and stud welding equipment" for the year 2011. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent

AMX-10Ps, AMX-10RCs, VABs, and M2 bridges

There are over 300 AMX-10RC armoured cars in service with the French Army. It is a wheeled and heavily armed amphibious vehicle with very good mobility. It is used for reconnaissance missions in dangerous environments, or for fire support. First produced in 1976, it features a powerful 105mm gun in a welded aluminium turret. The turret houses 3 crewmembers, while the driver sits in the front of the hull. Almost 4,000 VAB 4x4 APCs have been delivered to the French Arm, with another 1,000 exported. The French version is normally armed with a 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine gun. It is fully amphibious, being propelled by two water jets on either side of the rear of the hull. It carries a crew of two and 10 infantrymen. The M2 amphibious bridge is a road-mobile vehicle which folds out pontoons carried on the rear body to make it into an amphibious ferry. It can be linked with others to make a larger ferry or to make a fixed bridge. The AMX 10P is a French tracked infantry fighting vehicle with amphibious capabilities, using hydrojets to swim in water. The AMX-10P is planned to be replaced by the VBCI by 2008. All of these examples are seen on the River Seine during a French Army demonstration of amphibious equipment and capabilities at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.

Metro North Railroad Eastbound commuter train is operating on the former New Haven Railroad electrified mainline track in Stamford, Connecticut, August 1982

Metro North Railroad commuter train being lead by former New Haven EMD FL-9's while it is proceeding eastbound on former New Haven Railroad electrified mainline track in Stamford, Connecticut, August 1982. The FL-9 locomotives are dual powered with the capability to operate in the conventional diesel electric mode and to also operate on third rail DC power in the New York City area. The old SEPTA cars on the train don't really match each other in appearance, nor do they match the other equipment. The SEPTA cars are kind of homely to me, but to others they look great! Check out the remaining Hancock air whistle still installed on the cab of the lead locomotive. New Haven Railroad triangular catenary is present in this area and a little behind the locomotives over the second or third passenger car is a phase break bridge. When inspecting the rails on the mainline tracks you can see the use of both jointed and welded rail.

The 2011-2016 World Outlook for Turn Rolls, Head and Tail Stock, Weld Head Manipulators, Seamers, and Other Positioning and Manipulating Arc Welding Equipment ... Electrodes and Stud Welding Equipment

This econometric study covers the world outlook for turn rolls, head and tail stock, weld head manipulators, seamers, and other positioning and manipulating arc welding equipment excluding electrodes and stud welding equipment across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-a-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for turn rolls, head and tail stock, weld head manipulators, seamers, and other positioning and manipulating arc welding equipment excluding electrodes and stud welding equipment. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

THE GOOD OLD DAYS: Beginning a series on the glory days of the RAN in the not-so-distant past - Photo RAN Archives.

4077. In this photo we have some of the ships that went to Darwin after Cyclone Tracy all but destroyed the Northern Territory capital on Christmas Day, 1974. The ships performed a vital role in sustaining life in the devastated city until services ashore were gradually restored.

From right, in the first row here are three of the ships that went to Darwin, the escort maintenance ship HMAS STALWART [II], tanker HMAS SUPPLY, and HMAS MELBOURNE [II] . At rear are HMAS PERTH, HMAS BRISBANE and HMAS YARRA.

In Operation NAVY HELP DARWIN, the flagship HMAS MELBOURNE stood by the stricken city from January 1 to January 18.

The other RAN ships that went to Operation NAVY HELP DARWIN in 1974 included HMAS HOBART [II] HMAS BRISBANE [II], HMAS VENDETTA, HMAS STUART [II] HMAS FLINDERS, HMAS BALIKPAPAN, HMAS BETANO , HMAS WEWAK and HMAS BRUNEI. A total of 13 RAN ships and 11 Navy aircraft were involved in the largest emergency response in the Navy's history. Despite it being Christmas, some 3000 Navy personnel were mobilized. In work ashore, Navy personnel cleared 1593 residential blocks as well as schools and other buildings.

The role of the 15,500 ton Escort Maintenance Ship, HMAS STALWART [II], with her workshops, hospital, telephone exchange, scores of skilled tradesmen and engineers and two Wessex helicopters, was particularly significant. STALWART set sail for Darwin on December 27 after 36 hours loading supplies and building materials, which were further prepared en route.

The EMS spent `12 days on passage to and from Darwin, and 29 days alongside the stricken city working an estimated average 1000 manhours per day. Personnel from the Navy bases and patrol boats in the Darwin area also rendered massive assistance in the first hours after the storm.

At the end of Operation NAVY HELP DARWIN the city's Mayor Harry 'Tiger' Brennan signalled: 'I will not forget you. We owe the Navy the greatest debt of all.'

They were THE GOOD OLD DAYS. In February 2011, while controversy and political recriminations resulted from all three of the Navy's heavy lift vessels, HMAS KANIMBLA [II], MANOORA [II] and HMAS TOBRUK [II] being unavailable for service, a great deal of unsung work was again done by Navy ships and crews after Cyclone Yasi hit the Queensland coast. Two Landing Craft Heavy vessels brought heavy earth moving equipment ashore where needed along the coast and helicopters engaged in search and rescue, supply, and assistance generally. Additionally, after the flooding of Brisbane in preceding weeks, two HUON Class mine warfare vessels had surveyed the bottom of the Brisbane River, locating more than 100 dangerous objects.

Our Campsite at East Harbor State Park

Our Campsite at East Harbor State Park

Karen and I especially enjoyed our stay at the East Harbor Campground. Seven miles of wonderful hiking trails lead directly from the camping area along backwaters and wetlands of Lake Erie, ideal habitat for shorebirds, waterfowl and other wildlife. We also enjoyed the nearby sandy beach with 1,500-feet fronting on Lake Erie, and an immense shallow area where the water was quite warm in late August by Great Lakes standards.

This is the largest campground in the Ohio State Parks system with 365 electric sites and 205 non-electric. It was Labor Day weekend when we were here and the campground was filled to capacity. Those planning a trip to East Harbor in summer or on a holiday week-end are advised to make a reservation, which can be done through the website link below.

There is a well-stocked camp store and numerous recreational opportunities are available with equipment rentals at the camp office.

Gosford Park

The Academy Award winner for Best Original Screenplay, Gosford Park is a whodunit as only director Robert Altman could do it. As a hunting party gathers at the country estate, no one is aware that before the weekend is over, someone will be murdered - twice! The police are baffled but the all-seeing, all-hearing servants know that almost everyone had a motive. This critically-acclaimed murder mystery features a who's who of celebrated actors. With a diverse cast of characters - all with something to hide - it'll keep you guessing right to the surprising end. Gosford Park proves that murder can be such an inconvenience.

Gosford Park finds director Robert Altman in sumptuously fine form indeed. From the opening shots, as the camera peers through the trees at an opulent English country estate, Altman exploits the 1930s period setting and whodunit formula of the film expertly. Aristocrats gather together for a weekend shooting party with their dutiful servants in tow, and the upstairs/downstairs division of the classes is perfectly tailored to Altman's method (as employed in Nashville and Short Cuts) of overlapping bits of dialogue and numerous subplots in order to betray underlying motives and the sins that propel them. Greed, vengeance, snobbery, and lust stir comic unrest as the near dizzying effect of brisk script turns is allayed by perhaps Altman's strongest ensemble to date. First and foremost, Maggie Smith is marvelous as Constance, a dependent countess with a quip for every occasion; Michael Gambon, as the ill-fated host, Sir William McCordle, is one of the most palpably salacious characters ever on screen; Kristin Scott Thomas is perfectly cold yet sexy as Lady Sylvia, Sir William's wife; and Helen Mirren, Emily Watson, and Clive Owen are equally memorable as key characters from the bustling servants' quarters below. Gosford Park manages to be fabulously entertaining while exposing human shortcomings, compromises, and our endless need for confession. --Fionn Meade

Home Playground Structure w/ Slide

Our home Playcenters offer an excellent and safe play structure for young children at all stages of development. The components are made of quality engineered, impact absorbing, UV-stabilized thermoplastic tubes, connectors and panels. The rigid components "lock" together to make a variety of structures to support the weight of pre-school age children playing (and adults to clean and maintain). The benefit of plastic components is that they have a high strength, without the weight of metal. In addition the plastic does not rust or corrode like metal or splinter like wood. If, by chance a component is damaged, it can be simply and very inexpensively replaced. There is no "critical" failure that requires the whole system to be discarded.

The modular construction system has been sold around the world for almost 30 years without any mishap attributable to the product. The components are extremely strong and rugged, have no sharp corners, have no protruding screws or bolts. Components are easily assembled and then safely secured with special locking screws. Our products contain no toxic materials, no PVC or phthalates. Our "residential" designs conform to ASTM residential playground safety standards.

It's the perfect playground for Playrooms, Bedrooms, Bonus Rooms, Garages, Basements and Backyards.

Features:
Phunzone's "residential" designs conform to ASTM residential playground safety standards. Construction guidelines must be followed correctly and smaller children at play should be supervised at all times. Our product should only be used for purposes it was intended. Playground structures should be assembled by responsible adults. Improper assembly can create hazards, small children should only "assist" in the assembly.
* Very Stable, will not tip * No protruding sharp edges or bolts * Flexible panels reduce injuries * Contains no toxic materials, no PVC or phtha

AS-19 USS Proteus

Naval auxiliary ships carry out a variety of missions in support of combatants. Along with destroyer tenders, the submarine tenders are the largest of the active auxiliaries. Their crews are formed mainly of technicians and repairmen. USS Proteus was commissioned as a diesel sub tender in 1944. After participating in the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay and tending submarines briefly in Japan after the war, Proteus was "retired" to New London, Connecticut, where she was assigned - though not in commission - as the "station ship" at the Submarine Base, providing support services from 1947 until 1959.

USS Proteus was overhauled and reconfigured in 1959-60 to service FBM subs. With the new strategic submarines - and their missiles, launch systems, and nuclear power - came the need for a new class of tender. Since USS Hunley (AS-31) - purpose-designed and built for that mission - was some years from completion, a quicker alternative had to be found. Meanwhile, Proteus had served more than a decade at New London, tending both the older World War II boats still in service and their nuclear-powered counterparts coming on line in increasing numbers. As such, she was still in good condition and ready to sail. Thus, Proteus was quietly moved to Charleston Naval Shipyard, cut in half, and fitted with a new 44-foot hull "plug," fabricated in place. This additional section contained special nuclear-material storage facilities, handling, testing, and machining areas, and other necessities for servicing both nuclear-powered attack and ballistic-missile submarines. Other specialty shops and machinery were installed to maintain the fire control, navigation, and launcher systems that first appeared on the new SSBNs. The final element of the conversion was the installation of a huge X-Y crane, capable of lifting more than 30 tons, and equipped with extension arms that could swing out over a submarine to load equipment, supplies, and most importantly - Polaris missiles.

Proteus's conversion was completed in late 1960, and in January 1961, she hosted George Washington at New London, completing the first tender refit of an SSBN. Since the original Polaris missile had a range of only 2,500 miles, the early SSBNs had to be based relatively far forward to be able to reach targets deep in the European and Asian continents. Therefore, in March 1961, Proteus established the first advance SSBN refit site at Holy Loch, Scotland, where her first "customer" was USS Patrick Henry (SSBN-599). Later relieved by Hunley, Proteus then instituted a second advance SSBN site at Rota, Spain. The Chief of Naval Operations deployed Submarine Squadron 16 to Rota, Spain, on Jan. 28, 1964, and embarked upon USS Proteus (AS-19). USS Lafayette (SSBN 616) completed its first FBM deterrent patrol with the Polaris missile and commenced the first refit and replenishment at Rota. After the second USS Holland (AS-32) was completed, Proteus was off yet again - this time with USS Daniel Boone (SSBN-629) - to inaugurate a third overseas basing site at Apra Harbor, Guam, where she had already tended submarines during World War II. Polaris system support continued until the last SSBN - the Robert E. Lee, departed Guam in July 1981. Subsequently she was retired from FBM service and was fitted as an attack submarine tender.

In addition to carrying out her primary duties both at Guam and on WESTPAC cruises between 1964 and 1992, Proteus and her crew also provided assistance for typhoon victims and refugees from the fall of Saigon and helped out during the aftermath of the Mount Pinatubo eruption. She was finally decommissioned in September 1992 - and even then was recycled for service as a berthing ship (IX-518) at Bremerton until 1999.

Veriwide & Very Wide

Veriwide & Very Wide

When 3 tenors of photographic equipment worked togheter, a legend was born.

The viewer is made by Leitz (Leica), the lens by Schneider-Kreuznach; that’s for the German part, and the case is from Brooks-Plaubel; the American part. The camera was made from the mid 50’s till the mid 60’s. About 30.000 were produced. On the camera you can see the inscription : New York – Frankfurt a/M, beautiful.

The Veriwide 100, has his name from the angle of view it takes : 100° and is ...very very wide.

This is the equivalent of a 18.5mm on 35mm film.

But the great thing about the camera is, it’s on medium format. You can shoot 7 images on a 120 film with a huge size of neg : 6x10cm, for every picture.

The camera is very compact for a mediumformat, weights a bit more then a kilogram and is easy to carry.

I found this camera in a pile of junk on a Belgian fleamarket. The shutter was broken. After Googling for a while, I found a camera-repairsman that could fix it. And there goes the camera with airpost, from Belgium to the US. After a month impatiently waiting the camera, I had a letter from the custom that they made an investigation on the camera and I had to explain from where this camera came, and why I have to send it to the US for repair. I still doesn’t understand... But the camera was wonderfully repaired and the glass was cleaned fine.

The lens has this softness that caracterise early lenses, when you shoot in the sun it’s vignetting, and the corners are a bit difformed, like you can have on a pinhole.

It has speeds from bulb till 1/500 sec and f 8 till 32. Enough to have a correct exposure on any circumstance.

Where Novatrons Go to Die

Where Novatrons Go to Die

Having decided to set up a photo studio in my basement, I went to my mother to see what odds and ends I could scavenge. As fate would have it, she was disassembling her studio in favor of a more portable rig, so I grabbed just about everything, including these three Novatron strobe drivers, of which only the oldest works. I also snagged four working Novatron strobes, 2 Vivitar 283 Flashes, 1 Vivitar 273 Flash, 3 slaves, two backdrops, 3 umbrellas, and a number of lightstands and mounts.

The current fly in my ointment is that my primary camera, the Canon Digital Rebel, has no PC connector, so I can't hook it up directly. Right now I have the working Novatron rigged up to one of the slaves, but even this is imperfect as the Canon's built in flash isn't very controllable. Combine that with the lack of adequate reflectors on the walls of the room, and I've still got a long way to go before I can get much out of the studio, but I'll put some photos up to represent my progress as things start to happen.

(Unfortunately, a Novatron is something you simply can't repair yourself. They have huge capacitors in them, so they aren't safe to take apart. I haven't any spare change right now, but I'll look into getting at least one of the other two fixed eventually, and perhaps I will try and fix and sell the other one.)

Laboratory Accreditation and Data Certification: A System for Success

Laboratory Accreditation and Data Certification: A System for Success

This book provides descriptions of current laboratory accreditation schemes and explains why these schemes fall short of assuring data purchasers that the data produced from accredited laboratories are always quality products. The book then presents a system for laboratory accreditation in conjunction with data certification that assures data purchasers their data are useful for the purposes for which they are intended. Simple quality assurance and quality control techniques, in addition to concepts of total quality management, are described and then applied to the environmental laboratory industry. This "System For Success" was developed from real problems and real solutions within the industry and represents an integration of proven techniques that offer a better way to ensure quality laboratory data is obtained. Laboratory Accreditation: A Workable Solution is a must for government officials, environmental professionals, independent environmental laboratories, hazardous waste disposal industries, chemical manufacturers, QA professionals, and testing laboratories.

Dectrac Position Fixing Unit Mk.19

Dectrac Position Fixing Unit Mk.19

Recently I stumbled across a dusty old shop run by three old boys, with pullovers that were more holes than actual knitting & industrial sized tartan Thermos flasks, that specialized in valves, radio spares and ex-RAF equipment. I'd not seen a shop like this since Proops fizzled out at the end of the 80's so I couldn't resist a look, or walking out with a suitably photogenic box of gubbins.

Having researched a little it seems that Decca developed the Dectrac system initially as a maritime aid in the mid 1940s, but the benefits of having an onboard navigation computer were realized by the RAF for use, I suspect, in it's longer range bomber aircraft such as the Canberra and the Vulcan. So, in the 60's Decca took a very large MoD order for Mk.19 units such as this, which were successful enough to be manufactured into the early 80's. Dectrac coverage was pretty much global, with a multitude of 'Chains' being set up across the 'friendly' World - not to be confused with the WWII 'Chain Home' early warning network. Chain 5B was for England, the earliest - being set up in 1946 and operating unitl 2000.

It is more than a little unsettling to think that in the event of M.A.D. - Mutually Assured Destruction - surviving RAF bomber crews were expected to consider England 'hot' [radioactive] and keep on going for somewhere remote such as the Pacific Islands, writing off their friends, families & country as dead. All out Nuclear War would in effect have reduced the entire Western Civilization to a few dozen aircrews stranded on islands and atolls living off survival rations and coconuts.

The Button

The Button

When I was a graduate student in the late '60's, a colleague in our group got hold of a surplus NORAD computer, probably dating to the '50's. It was a couple of racks full of transistorized logic cards, which we took apart and used the racks, the transistors, and the power supplies to build other equipment for our work. It was definitely out of date since by that date individual integrated circuits had replaced entire cards full of transistors. (By now the integrated circuits have replaced the entire racks [not including the power supplies and manual controls]).

This button was mounted on a panel on the computer. It has a guard around it so you can't lean on it by accident. From the text on the button we always considered it to be THE BUTTON, although there was never any documentation to that effect. I have never found a suitable use for it, even to control woodchucks.

Fortunately, it's no longer connected to anything.

Detroit area river traffic

Detroit area river traffic

I think this is the Hamonic.
One of the great old steam ships that used to sail the great lakes was the S.S. Hamonic. The Hamonic and her sister ship were owned by the Northern Navigation Company.

A quote from Time Magzine-
"During the night the Great Lakes pleasure ship Hamonic moved through Lake St. Clair and up the St. Clair River from Detroit and Windsor. An hour after daybreak she eased into the dock at Point Edward, Ont. Her 247 passengers, most of them Americans, got up drowsily for a picnic ashore. Later, 80-odd more passengers would arrive from Toronto. Then the Canada Steamship Lines' 36-year-old ship would shove off for Duluth, Minn, as she had done many times for many summers.

In the wooden shed alongside, crewmen helped stevedores heave cargo aboard the Hamonic. A few of the passengers gawked at them from the top deck. Others were at breakfast in the long salon, and many were still in their staterooms. Suddenly a truck on the pier backfired and burst into flame. When the fire reached the gasoline tank, a rolling blaze swept up the ship's side, billowed over the deck.

The flames ate into the dry planking, roared toward the bow. Captain Horace Beaton gave orders to cast off. Slowly the burning ship backed out into the stream, slid away from the burning dock, moved forward again and drove sharp against the river bank.

Screaming women and hoarsely shouting men scuttled along the decks, leaped from the rails or slid down ropes into the water. Mothers holding babies made frantic one-armed, flesh-burning descents down the dangling cables. A man grabbed a rope and poised to shove off, let go when two women leaped on his back. The three plunged into the river together. Up to the Hamonic rushed a flotilla of motorboats, rowboats and canoes, led by U.S. Coast Guard craft. The boatmen snatched up those who could not swim ashore.

Searchers groped through the smoke-filled passageways, looking for stragglers. Brother Eugene Benoit, Montreal teacher and member of the Institution of Marist Brothers, went from cabin to cabin, smashing windows with his hands and pushing children out the portholes. Many took him for a priest and asked for absolution. Brother Benoit prayed for them.

The quick-thinking operator of a coal derrick edged his big machine to the bank, swung the bucket of his crane up to the Hamonic's bow, swung it down to earth again when it had taken on its frantic load. Captain Beaton, scorched out of his pilot house, attempted to climb to a lower deck but fell. He plunged into the water from the portside, climbed back aboard up the crane boom, stayed there till all were off.

Miraculously, no one was killed, and few were seriously hurt. But the Hamonic was burned to a shell. Canada Steamship figured the loss, to ship, dock and port equipment, at more than $2,000,000."

Day 4

Today my family household and I went snowboarding at Boreal Ski Resort. And let me tell you, that shit was not cheap. Me being that only one that had snowboard equipment, I didn't have to worry about anything but the lift ticket. My parents, brothers, uncles, and aunt on the other hand.. ha. The price to rent all their equipment was about.. $420.

Holy fuck, right?

On top of that, my mom broke her Chanel sunglasses when she fell boarding down the mountain. That's about another $400. (Holier fuck. Meh, her fault anyways. Who goes snowboarding with Chanel shades.. -________-)

I had a good time though. Great way to spend my last day of break. I'm not exactly ready to go to school tomorrow with my fractured arm and dislocated leg. (Yeah, I kinda.. I'm not even gon' say. It's too embarassing.)

The KP3 comes equipped with 128 great-sounding effect programs Sure, the traditional essential effects are there – delays, flangers, etc., and they sound amazing. But using newly developed algorithms, the KP3 also provides fresh, exciting effects such as a grain shifter, decimator, a vintage analog style filter with a tone-bending drive circuit, and expanded EQs that are controlled directly from the pad. Another Spoonful Setup

Another Spoonful Setup

Setup for backlighting a spoon of sugar, using a combination of a DIY light table and difusser panel.
Hopefully not too blown out to be able to see the curved line of the Fax paper used as the backdrop and prop the spoon up at an angle. This is held in place with a couple of clothes pegs, very useful to have around the place.
What wont be obvious here, is that 2 flashes are being used. Both are Neewer SF-01 mini slave flashes (very cheap and compact). The one on view is mounted on a Blazzeo SLT-4 radio trigger and mini tripod. The second is masked by the sides of the difussion panel and is mounted on a small flash stand and pointing into the bottom of the light table. This one uses it's optical sensor to trigger from the output of the radio triggered flash. Very versatile these little flashes :)

The black card at the sides (closest side removed for this shot) and the small piece to the front are to give a dark reflection to the sides of the highly reflective spoon.
Also not shown, is a white reflector which was hand held above to stop reflection of the ceiling and room lights above and bounce some light back onto the subject.
If I had a large softbox, I would have used that above instead. Something to add to my shopping list , or maybe I should make one:)

Might sound complicated, but it's not really.

House for Rent

House for Rent

Defies every notion you have of a refugee camp to see a "house" for rent. But they were all over the place. See the camp has the "real" refugees (i.e. UN recognised from a 2003 census) and the "rest" of the refugees. The real refugees are being repatriated or resettled (often to the US). They are supposed to have "cleared out" the camp by tomorrow... not realistic. Especially as that is only for the "real" refugees which the UN will repatriate. No one is talking about the "rest" of the refugees. But all of this movement has the camp's internal economy spiraling and in a housing crisis of their own... this house is for rent.

American Telephone & Telegraph Company Building

American Telephone & Telegraph Company Building

Financial District, Manhattan

Financial District, Manhattan

The American Telephone & Telegraph Company Building, designed by noted architect William Welles Bosworth and constructed in three phases from 1912 to 1922, is an important example of Greek-inspired neo-Classical design. Envisioned by company president Theodore Newton Vail as a grand corporate symbol, the building was designed to create an impression of quality, durability, and permanence expressive of the Telephone Company’s commitment to public service.

Its architect, Welles Bosworth, was a prominent designer of classical buildings and a leading preservation architect and this, his only large-scale office building, is considered one of his finest works. Inspired by Greek and Roman precedents, the facades of the American Telephone and Telegraph Building are clad in Vermont granite and incorporate nine superimposed colonnades, with eight three-story high Ionic colonnades based on the order of the then recently excavated Temple of Sardis stacked on a double-height base of colossal columns copied from the Doric order of the Athenian Parthenon.

The impression of solidity is enhanced by the use of stone spandrel panels at the base of each story grouping which contrast with bronze spandrels and window frames in the upper two-thirds of the bays. The spacing of the bays on Dey Street and certain other features of the design reflect the theories of Professor William H. Goodyear regarding Greek architectural practice and were intended to create a sense of “rhythmic beauty.” The facades are beautifully detailed with Greek-inspired ornament, including swags, and wreaths, lion heads, frets, paterae, anthemia, and delicate foliate reliefs.

The concern for classical detailing also extended to the articulation of the subway stair enclosures on Dey and Fulton Streets and to the southbound platform of the Fulton Street IRT subway where the A level basement Broadway facade of the 1912-16 portion of the building was faced with granite and given special bronze gates and shop windows enriched with classical motifs.

The western end of the building which contained the company’s executive offices is surmounted by a small Ionic temple with a stepped roof modeled on the mausoleum of Halicarnasus and is capped by a golden orb which originally supported a gilded bronze figure of The Genius of Electricity. From 1916 until 1983, this building was the headquarters of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, the largest corporation in the world for much of the twentieth century. It remains in use as an office building.

The American Telephone and Telegraph Company Building is located on an irregular lot that extends approximately 154 feet along Broadway, 275 feet along Dey Street, and 200 feet along Fulton Street. The major portion of the building is twenty-six stories high (the double-height lobby space counting as two stories) and is surmounted by a twenty-seventh attic story housing mechanical equipment that was installed in 1959-61. The northwest corner of the building at 170 Dey Street rises to twenty-nine stories and is treated as a tower. The building has five basement stories. The southern portion of the Broadway facade of the A level basement story fronts onto the southbound platform of the Fulton Street IRT subway and is also included in this exterior designation.

The three major facades and the tower are clad in white Vermont granite. Except for the tower wing on Fulton Street, the facades are articulated with nine superimposed orders consisting of a double-height base of colossal Doric columns surmounted by eight three-story high Ionic colonnades. The tower is articulated with a tripartite design incorporating a three story base, twenty-three-story shaft, and three-story crown capped by a stepped pyramid. The southern portion of the west wall of the Fulton Street wing and the northern rear wall of the Dey Street wing, both visible from Fulton Street, and the small sliver of Dey Street wing’s western wall visible from Church Street are clad with light colored brick. The major facades retain their original bronze entrance and first-story window enframements, although a few windows have been altered to create display windows and some entries have been adapted for wheelchair access. (The windows and doors vary in configuration from facade to facade and are described below). All of the bronze metalwork has been painted gold and the inset nickel relief panels are painted silver. A large portion of the bronze grilles that were employed at the base of the building have been removed. These were originally fixed in front of the window glass on both the bottom and upper tier of windows and were employed for the paired sliding doors that were pushed into pockets behind the lower tier of sidelights during the day and pulled shut at night to protect the rotating door entries. The area of land, South of False Creek and East of Cambie Street, was a significant industrial area for most of the 1900’s. From the wood mills at the beginning of the century, through the first City of Vancouver works yard before the First World War and to the beginning of the decline in the 1970’s, the area has served a vital industrial role in Vancouver history. The largest of the buildings, the Canron Building, was torn down in 1998.
The two significant remaining buildings are the Central Machine Shop, which begun construction in 1924, and the adjoining Woodwork Shop. The main structure, the
Central Machine Shop, is a long, shed-like building with a distinctive saw-tooth roof constructed of wood, brick, steel, and sheet metal. At its peak in the 1950s, there were about 100 people working at the Works Yard, some 51 people worked at the Central Machine Shop alone. The Central Machine Shop consisted of two bays, one housing a medium machine shop and the other a light machine shop; a meter testing shop was located in the northwest corner. In 1926, a single storey woodworking shop was added at the west end of the building.
The post WWII history of the building has not been traced in detail. At some point, the south wall was removed and by 1967, it was being used for electrical and sign storage. This use seems to have continued until the Cambie Works Yards was vacated by the Engineering Department in 2004.
Currently (2009), much of the empty land is used for the storage of earth-moving equipment and construction materials for the nearby 2010 Olympic village.
