Early Pin Making East Bristol

Pin Making East Bristol in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Two Mile Hill - One of the largest factories in East Bristol was opened by Robert Charleton at Two Mile Hill, Kingswood in 1831.

Charleton (1809-72) was a prominent Bristol quaker, philanthropist and temperance worker. He followed the pattern of other Victorian benevolent employers. He maintained a severe regime, strict moral control and created a disciplined and indebted work force.

In 1841 Charleton employed about 110 women and girls and 50 men and boys in the factory. In addition, about 500 women and girl outworkers were employed at heading and sticking. Pin making is a good example of the survival of the pre-industrial system of outwork well into the Victorian years of factory based industrial organisation.

Outwork was an essential feature of the textile, clothing, boot and shoe, straw, nail and chain making trades. As with pin making it was usually the final stages of manufacture requiring more delicate operations which were carried out by the outworkers.

The Children’s Employment Commission was set up in 1840 to examine the employment of children in mining and manufacturing. Whilst not officially asked to do so, the Sub-Commissioners also reported on women’s employment. The Commissioners’ Report revealed such appalling conditions in mines that the Mines and Collieries Act was immediately passed which forbade the employment of boys below ten and all females underground.

The Sub-Commissioners also reported on children’s and females’ employment in manufacturing industries. The Sub-Commissioner for South Gloucestershire was Elijah Waring. His report (1841) is a valuable document which enables us to glimpse the working lives of some of the women and children of East Bristol. Albeit this is through the eyes of the male inspectors.

Perhaps though its greater value lies in its revelation of prevailing attitudes to female employment. In his preoccupation with respectability and morality Waring exemplified the concerns of so many middle class commentators who divided the poor into the rough and the respectable, the undeserving and the deserving.

Waring reported that: 'Pin-making furnishes employment to a multitude of the poor population; the operation of fixing on the heads being carried on to a great extent by females, in private houses as well as in the manufactories'.

He also reported on iron-works and nail making, and, mentioned other trades: 'button and comb making, wire-working, horsehair weaving, willow-weaving, lacemaking, book folding and stitching, brick-making, hat and cap making, soap-boiling, the manufacture of Lobacco.'

Waring visited Robert Charleton’s factory at Two Mile Hill and James Dobson’s factory at Soundwell. He reported that the majority of employees in these two factories were young girls from 14-18 years old; no girls or boys under 12 were employed.

A few boys were employed in drawing and straightening the wire. The boys in Charleton’s factory were all sons of men working in the factory. Some were employed directly by Charleton, others were paid by their fathers.

Grinding the points and coating the pins with white metal was done by adults. Heading was done wholly by girls and women,each of whom sits before a machine worked by a foot-board or treadle, having by her a wooden bowl of pointed shanks, and another of heads; the heads being formed of compact spiral wire... The header takes an indefinite number of shanks between her thumb and fingers, and dips them into the bowlful of heads, when she generally finds each shank furnished with a loose head. She then drops the pins singly into a perpendicular receptacle in the block, under the hammer, and by a single motion of her foot rivets on the head.

This is performed with almost inconceivable rapidity and without any intent occupation of the eye. The women and girls worked twelve hours a day. They earned from 2/6d to 7/- a week; the boys earned 1/- to 8/- a week. They were paid piece rates except for the packers, who put the pins in the papers, who earned 10d daily. Waring commented, 'There is a great disproportion between the wages of the men and the females.

Heading machines were used both in the factories and by outworkers at home. Waring was highly critical of the machines: 'The old-fashioned heading-machines are semi-barbarous con trivances, which it would be desirable to see annihilated. They require a close and continuous application of the sight, a protracted action of the feet, and an inclination of the whole body unfavourable to health. It appears, however, that the liability of the improved machines to get out of repair impedes their introduction to private homes'.

Pointing the pins was also dangerous, the fine brass dust was breathed in by the grinding operators. Despite this, Waring reported that he 'observed no unhealthy appearances' amongst the pinmakers that he saw:

Okay I'm about to type a lot. Get ready. OKAYYY SO friday night I went to a small art showing with one of my friends. I talked to a photographer there. He was really nice. Saturday morning I had rehearsal for the artistry awards show I auditioned for back in February. I made the finals for instrumental and print art. I won 3rd place in instrumental and 1st place in print art!!!!! I got plaques and $200. I missed the app state guitar competition and frankly I could care less. I will never place in a guitar competition. Last night I felt noticed and seriously supported. It was great. I feel torn though because I like photography better than guitar but I love performing on stage. Anyways, it was a great night and it was great because of all my family and friends that supported me!

Ten years ago, when I was fourteen years old, my dad made me get glamour shots. The outfits they put on me were HORRENDOUS. This one, for example. There's another one where I'm wearing a giant floppy hot with sunflowers all over it AND a giant black-and-white striped dress with sunflowers all over it. So horrible. Look at that tacky necklace. And the clip-on earrings. And the two strands of carefully curled hair that frame my face. Look at my makeup! That eyeliner! I'm fourteen but I look forty. Gross.

My hair is so long and my face is so skinny. Wow. Ten years ago. Time flies.

I have been too sick. Well. That tends to mean varieties of mad. But I am a gentle man, I am my hands were made to make and I cannot envision physically hurting someone ELSE.
I have chronic bipolar disorder… it sucks, mostly.

I don’t seem to be able to stop being too hot or too cold. I should probably get a house with air conditioning (I will just spray the conditioner I have in my bathroom up n down and all around and see if that helps.) I USED to have air conditioning at my house – I wrote on the controls in purple felt tip pen “for permed or colour treated air.”
OK well I have done all the remarkably simple tasks necessary for this morning and for me they were mammoth undertakings requiring much sweat and most of all, courage. Just have to ignore all the fear and go DO IT ALL ANYWAY.
Hm…I love the names of paints. Not the ones that they come up with for you to paint your house with. I have always thought I would be good at that though –
For your lounge “winter ferret” and for your kitchen, “happy exploding sunflower” and in your dining room, “fragrant maroon mice” with a split level in “hungry hungry hippo.”
Or not.
Real paints have names like crimson alizarin, burnt umber, spectrum yellow, French ultramarine, titanium white and cobalt blue. Somehow more real they elicit possibility like a blank white canvas or a snow-white untouched high cotton yield watercolour sheet. Like a beach without footprints or a wide green field of soft grass. At the same time they threaten to overwhelm me with their original unsullied beauty.
So, anyhoo, I sit here, naked in the cold because I choose to be, because I don’t care. I do believe, I do, that we are brilliant and unique, random, an act of somewhere silent, sliding through the world on the diamond flaws that everyone tries so hard to believe. Arbitrary, indiscriminately created, hacked open and carved from the world.
I have been remiss but that does not indicate that I have not been paying attention.
The distress abates by degrees, and by degree it returns and haunts and hurts. This is how it has always been.
I have even been up of late, yes directly up not even dysphoric. Can feel my fingers and toes tingle all day for no reason in slow waves of pleasure, hold them before my face, bend at the hip to pick lavender and put it in my pocket. Stretch strong and beautiful in the morning sun.
Just the tantalizing threads of it in my blood making me bite my cheeks and begin, once more, to push the worlds of my mind onto paper, to hold their drifting and stinging forms.
And it surges and falls like the sea, beats like wind against glass in my head. It has been a few days since I felt the irrational pleasure throb through my limbs. But ah, yes ah YES I know it will be back and soon and I will whisper to it and brush its feathers and ask it to stay stay stay.
I have been being very careful. I have not worked to the extent that I know I can, that I am pushed to and pressured in the back of my mind. I have even held back from the truth of my desires and have been making works that are gentle and lyrical. Before the storm. I have rational rationale that I must follow before I get all carried away and covered in paint inside and out. I do feel in a kind of limbo. I don’t know if this is happiness or not. I am lonely and dissatisfaction nests in my mind. Of course, of course. But limbo is better than purgatory and purgatory is better than hell. Often I feel… vague and unreal.
I stare so keenly at the moments days weeks without knowing that I am actually mad – this time, it does not possess the defining edge of reality that the very distortion and pain brings. How odd. Ridiculous.
ABSURD. And while I have this stillness, this ineptitude for subsistence there is always the star monster, world eater, inside me. It is inside us all, somewhere, elsewhere, else-when, telling us, calling to us in the night…
Don’t ever stop asking don’t ever ever stop reaching the answer to the question what is the meaning of life is the question what is the meaning of life.

Breathe the sweet breath of madness tie your mind to itself in switches and arcs of pleasure and lights and pain, in stutters and twitches and flights and bursts of colour in your vision.
We are all so bound to lucidity. To rationalism.

her headdress is a fine collection of huge amber beads tipped with coral red coral. her hair is braided into 108 strands - a sacred number from buddhism. the necklaces of dzi beads and red coral are worth a fortune - enough to buy a house in a western country. red and yellow stones and garments are spiritual colors in tibetan culture. 3 silver and gold belts are around her waist, studded with coral and turquoise, considered to provide magical protection. many 24k gold bracelets rest on her wrists and a big gold ring is on every finger

Khampa tibetan festivals feature some of the most astonishing shows of bejewelling in the world. Traditionally nomatter who you are in Khampa society, it would go without saying that you buy jewelry with your money, because that it the most appropriate and traditional store of money. Nomadic people naturally find precious stones and metals the most portable way to keep their wealth. Many ornaments have religious or spirtual meaning, as well as being the objects which store the family history, wealth, and show the family status.

Ornaments make up most of the life savings of many Khampa families, and so play an important role in Tibetan families' lives as well as in announcing the social status of the wearers. They are saved up for over many years and handed down for centuries from generation to generation within families. Until very recently, these families were nomadic and have to move every few months because of the snowy seasons in the Himalayas, so Khampas have always needed to store their wealth in portable form. So being unable to store wealth in the form of estates or houses or land or in a bank, for millenia wealth has been stored in art, precious fabrics, and particularly into ornaments.

Their culture is very conservative about the type of ornaments favored: for thousands of years jewelry made from amber, turquoise and coral have been worn because the stones are believed to hold spiritual power. Gold and silver and also naturally found in Tibet, and the use of these metals by the wealthy also goes back thousands of years. Their ornaments are very chunky, bold and colorful. While the gold earrings that Khampa women wear may have cost them a year or maybe several year's of their salary, ornaments carry so much social status in their society that probably didn't have to think twice about the purchase.

To the Khampa people these ornaments have the utmost sentimental value and significance, because they are the physical remnants of generations of their ancestors hard work or success. what these people are wearing is not just their life savings, but also their family history and treasure. this culture has been around for millenia - archeological finds from the 1st century AD in the khampa area unearthed ornaments that are essentially the same in design and materials as today's are. there are also beliefs that the stones provide good luck and protection to disease. dyed red coral is the most sought after stone, but interestingly tibet is very very far from any oceans - all the coral is imported by traders! Religious symbols from Tibetan Buddhism frequency form the designs of pieces, however archeological finds show that the role of ornaments in Tibetan society and peoples' lives long predate the arrival of Buddhism in Tibet. Indeed the beliefs of spiritual protection being provided by coral, amber and turquoise probably originate from the ancient shamanic Bon religion.

Vanity

This photograph is representative. It enraptures vanity at it's peak. When teenagers enter a drug store such as Shopper Drug Mart, it is usually to buy make up. They pretend to not be looking at their reflections in the windows, when everyone knows that they are. They may as well do it in front of the world, as the girl in the picture has her mirror right up to her face. When the teenagers buy their makeup, they apply the makeup all over their face, to mask their teenage acne and imperfections. They say that they're sure of themselves, that they are not self conscious at all, then why wear the makeup? They are just wearing a mask, such as the girl in the photo again. If a group of teenaged girls were to see this while walking around, outwardly, they would say to eachother, "what a vain girl, look at her!" But aren't they doing the same thing by entering Shoppers Drug Mart? In the least, the girl in the picture is the most non-self conscious girl because she can clearly see the camera focussing on her, but she does not hide, she keeps going with the mirror and the mask. She doesn't deny that she is vain. The photo was taken to her side so that the photographer could take at least a bit of her face too, for if the photographer took this picture right in front of her, the mirror wouldn't show her features.
Because I have taken this picture, I cannot say that I have seen it before. But I can say that it took on a special meaning to me as I took it because it amazed me when she said "so? everyone does it, just discreetly."
I realized that her comment and the image of her was so harmonized that I just had to take the picture of her.

This is me as you see me - no makeup, no editing. Just the light of the bathroom. And my scars.

See, I hate my skin. I had horrible acne as a teenager. My skin eventually cleared up later in high school, but not until after enduring years of bullying. Most kids were unoriginal and called me pizza face, but this one boy screamed at me to use Oxy. Another day at middle school for him, yet I remember the moment clearly - his over sized navy blue shirt, the tense but amused silence on the school bus.

I used to look at my acne scars and think of trauma, of the days spent crying in my bed, so full of self loathing that as a 13 year old girl, I wanted nothing more than to disappear. To not exist. Suicidal over pimples.

But now I see my scars for what they are, tiny bumps in my life story. And each day I try to love myself more. I may be a work in progress, but I am a healthy and happy work in progress.

On his death...chair

From the "The Cherry Orchard" shoot.

My new school's senior play is "The Cherry Orchard", by Anton Chekhov, which documents the trials of a once wealthy Russian family coping with the trials of bankruptcy, on the verge of the Russian revolution.

The character here is Firs [an 87 year old manservant, played by Sam Eady]

This scene is the final scene in the play, where Firs is dying in a chair, forgotten by the Ranyevski's. Quite sad.

But on another note... Seady's makeup! Quite astonishing I would say. We had a professional stage makeup artist come in just for Seady and Nick's makeup, which took hours to put on and hours to get off. So worth it though! It was so realistic =D

Oh yes and apologies for the quality - the lighting was awful on stage, I don't have any prime lenses and this was shot at ISO 400. Oh yes and I've lost my photo editing software. So this is straight out of the camera >_<

Another one (possibly the last) from the Niagara Photoshoot.

We shot for about 5hrs that day, but the entire photoshoot from when we first headed out, to when we got home was about 9hrs altogether. I think we both learned quite a bit from the shoot for both being in front and behind the camera.

This was a daring/different photoshoot for me. I hope to do more creative shoots in the future. I think one of the key factors to a successful photoshoot is the chemistry between the model and the photog. I don't think I'd be very comfortable working with someone that I completely don't know... but I guess that's also a challenge for me to come out of my shell.

I've been watching a lot of "Canada's next top model" lately and trying to pick up tips. I'd love to have my hair, makeup and wardrobe done by professionals, and working with a fashion photog would be pretty exciting. But for now, I think my "photogs" are doing a decent job :) So a BIG thank you, to the people that have taken my photos, you know who you are.

Anyhow, I've got nothing to post for a while, so it's time for me to visit your streams and leave comments :)

I was hoping to get some tips to replicate his awesome photos at home, but he had like a grand worth of equipment I just cant afford! I guess I'll have to con him into taking more pics of my girls!

Esmaltes Revlon

Comprei dois esmaltes da Revlon pelo E-Bay... demorou uma semana para chegar e quando abri fiquei surpresa com tamanha dedicacao e carinho...
