Bellerophon "Bellerophon" at the Foxfield. "Bellerophon" is one of the oldest steam locomotives to be seen in action anywhere in the world and offers one of the best surviving insights into the development of early purpose-built powerful industrial engines, rather than simply ex-mainline stock that had been pensioned off. "Bellerophon" was built in 1874 by the Haydock Foundry, to the design of Josiah Evans, son of Richard Evans who owned the Haydock Collieries which were to become Lancashire's largest privately owned mining and related engineering concern. It was one of the first six similar locomotives turned out from the Foundry from 1868, and it was an unusual practice there to give locos letters rather than numbers, "C" indicating that "Bellerophon" was the third to be built. The valve gear is a modified Gooch-type Stephenson link motion working off the rear axle, and makes an interesting contrast with simpler modern designs. It originally had just a spectacle plate, and was first fitted with a cab in the 1880s. Working duties included twice daily runs between Haydock and Northwich in Cheshire and, alternately, twice daily runs between Golborne and Edge Green collieries and the shunting yards at Haydock. These duties all involved runs over the mainline railways, as private owners often exercised their rights to run their own locomotives as well as wagons at that time. Most unusually, in the 1880s, "Bellerophon" and similar locomotives ran annual passenger excursions to Blackpool for the Haydock employees and their families. Four trains, each double-headed, made the journey over the line of the LNWR and LYR hauling loose-coupled four and six wheeled carriages. When the coal mining industry was nationalised in 1947, the Haydock Foundry became the Central Works for the NCB St Helens area and the Evans locomotives became dispersed among the various collieries. "Bellerophon" bears evidence of many repairs throughout its life, and received its last overhaul at Haydock in 1957. It then worked with little or no maintenance until 1964, by which time it attracted considerable attention from railway enthusiasts as it had been at work for 90 years. The five other similar Haydock locomotives were cut up for scrap in the early 1960s leaving only "Bellerophon", which was offered for display at the City of Liverpool Museum. As the Museum was unable to accomodate it, the NCB donated "Bellerophon" to the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, which received it in November 1966. It was of little prospective use on the developing steam railway and so became a static exhibit at Haworth. The enthusiasm of a member of the K&WVR, Terry Sykes, and the Vintage Carriages Trust, led to an ambitious plan to restore "Bellerophon" to working order. The Vintage Carriages Trust purchased the locomotive from the K&WVR for a nominal sum and successfully applied for a 50% grant from the Science Museum towards the costs of restoration. "Bellerophon" steamed for the first time in preservation on 1 May 1985 and hauled its first passenger train for about 100 years that October. In 1986 it won the National Coal Board's "Steam Heritage Award", and in 1987 began a tour of many preservation sites around the north of England, including Steamtown, Carnforth, Crewe Heritage Centre and the Embsay Steam Railway. It also saw frequent off-peak use on the Worth Valley line. In 1989 the restoration won the Institution of Mechanical Engineers "Heritage Hallmark Award". To enable "Bellerophon" to be seen in an authentic industrial railway environment, the Vintage Carriages Trust kindly loaned the locomotive to the Foxfield Railway. The sight of such an ancient machine hauling trains of coal wagons up the bank from Foxfield Colliery has proved addictive and the period of loan has gradually been extended for several years. While at "Bellerophon" has been repainted in green, lined in red, with "NCB" lettering. It is now being overhauled again at Caverswall Road, and in November 2004 the boiler was lifted from the frames. It is hoped that "Bellerophon" can remain a fascinating and active part of the Foxfield Railway for many years to come. Belleophon Mythology Bellerophon was a hero of Greek mythology. He was "the greatest hero and slayer of monsters, alongside of Cadmus and Perseus, before the days of Heracles", and his greatest feat was killing the Chimera, a monster that Homer depicted with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail. In 1893, the company was leased by Fulton Tool and Manufacturing Co., who operated it for about two years, manufacturing pit cars, coal drills and mine tools. Upon the failure of this company, Mr. Schrock again assumed control.” The building pictured was built in 1913. The Pit Car Works was established to serve the area mines. The Company had its own lumberyard and manufactured wooden mine cars. The wheels were made at the factory as well as a machine shop at the Pit Car Company that made long drills to bore holes for blasting coal out of mines. Unfortunately, the time was off for the Pit Car Works, local mines were becoming played out, and mining was shifting to southern states. With the cost of shipping the pit cars this company could not compete with other companies who did not need to ship their products. Day 076: Rock First of all. Jess and I finished our motorcycle class today and I'm happy to say that we both passed. Woohoo! (I was pretty worried that I wasn't going to pass based on how many times I stalled the bike yesterday, but today went pretty smoothly and I did fine on the skillz test.) Now we just need to get ourselves a cute little scooter! :) Secondly, we've been playing a lot of rockband (primarily drumming) and we recently got the drum pedal repair kit (a piece of diamond plate that has been cut to the right size and which you bolt onto the pedal.) That worked great and I was rockin' out, until all of a sudden the stupid !@(#* base of the pedal snapped. WTF!?! Now I need to go lasercut an appropriate plate out of wood to screw onto the base of this piece of crap plastic pedal. I can appreciate that they were trying to get the cost down to make it accessible, but this pedal really is craptacular. Conrail GP-30 #2233 According to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, this powerful general purpose GP-30 diesel electric locomotive was designed for both high speed and heavy low speed freight trains. Having already replaced most steam locomotives in the 1950's, railroads now demanded larger and more powerful diesels to supplement and replace the earlier models. This marked the beginning of what is now commonly called the "Second Generation" of diesels. Thow of the three top diesel manufacturers in the country, General Electric and Alco, introduced their first high horsepower lines in 1960. In an effort to keep pace, the Electro Motive Division of General Motors (EMD) unveiled the first GP-30 in 1963. The GP-30 used the same engine as many earlier locomotives, including our GP-9 No. 7006, but added a turbocharger, new electronics and a new air blower and filtration system to get the most out of the model 465 prime mover. Its horsepower to weight ratio was unusually high for a single unit carried by two 4 wheel trucks; the standard 1500 horsepower diesel freight locomotive of the 1960's era weighted 115 tons. The internal arrangement of these new features lead to the distinctively styled roofline, unique to the GP-30's. Not long after the GP-30 was introduced, newer and more powerful models were unveiled. These improved locomotives quickly replaced the GP-30's on the premier mainline trains. Many GP-30's were reassinged to hevier mainline trains, or yard and local switching jobs. Like driving in the city as opposed to driving on an expressway, these new roles placed much harder loads on the locomotives, making them old before their time. By the mid 1980's , GP-30's were becoming rare on America's railroads. The Pennsylvania received 52 GP-30's, including No. 2233, in 1963. Painted in a somber shade of solid Brunswick Grean, the only ornamentation on the locomotives were the number under the cab window and two small keystone decals applied to the ends and sides. No. 223 became part of Penn Central's roster on its creation in 1968, trading its dark green pait for black. THe Penn Central operated 62 GP-30's, including the 52 from Pennsylvania and 10 from the New York Central. The success of Penn Central, much like that of the GP-30's, was brief in 1976, No. 2233 became part of the new roster of the Consolidated Rail Corporation, known as Conrail. Conrail's fleet of GP-30's also included 20 units inherited from the Reading. Although the GP-30's were among the newest on Conrail's roster in 1976 (only about 13 years old), most were taken out of service within the railroad's first decade of operation. Conrail sold No. 2233 to the West Shore Railroad in 1985, where it was returned to its PRR livery and served on excursion, dinner trains, and occasional freight runs through the 1990's. In 1998, the locomotive was donated to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Four years later, No. 2233 was sent to Altoona one last time to be restored to Conrail livery by the locomotive repair shots of Norfolk Southern. PELLET GUN REPAIR : GUN REPAIR

Whitchurch Canonicorum parish church Described as 'the cathedral of Marshwood Vale' the parish church of Whitchurch Canonicorum in Dorset has another claim to fame which puts it on a par with Westminster Abbey in London. Apart from Westminster Abbey, Whitchurch's much humbler building is the only other English church to retain a pre-Reformation shrine of a saint. Westminster Abbey has St.Edward the Confessor, Whitchurch has its patron Saint Wite (Candida in Latin). Officially known as St Candida and Holy Cross, the church stands on a hill in the attractive Dorset village not far from Charmouth's Jurassic beach. As well as being the shrine of a real saint, the church is also the lasting resting place of the remains of murdered Bulgarian dissident and broadcaster Georgi Markhov and verteran British broadcaster Sir Robin Day. Mr Markhov is near the gate, Sir Robin's ashes are close to the church door. Mr Markhov was famously shot in the leg with an umbrella air gun firing a poison pellet. The village's interesting name is derived from Canon's Whitchurch because the tithes were divided between Salisbury and Wells. There was probably a Saxon church on the site, but nothing now survives earlier than the 12th century south doorway protected by the 15th century porch. The nave and central section are 13th century although some of the south windows and the lights in the clerestory are of 1848-50 by Joseph Butler of Chichester. The Early English (1190-1310) capitals of the nave arcade are beautifully carved with deeply cut flower and wild plant designs. High up on the south side of the chancel arch is a door, which would certainly have once led to the rood loft. The magnificent tower, which greets the visitor on entering the churchyard, is 15th century. In the chancel there is a fine elaborate example of a stone canopied monument with a recumbent effigy of Sir John Jeffery, one of Queen Elizabeth I's knights, who died in 1611. Also in the chancel is a memorial to Sir George Somers, born in Lyme Regis in 1554 and a contemporary of Sir Walter Raleigh. He is generally credited with the discovery of Bermuda, giving great assistance to the American colonists and being an inspiration for Shakespeare's 'Tempest'. The pulpit is an excellent Jacobean example, decorated with large arches. There is a most impressive organ rather tucked away in the south transept. The font is Norman and cauldron shaped with an intersecting arch decoration. Probably the principal reason for the church being built was to enclose the shrine to St Candida, although her origins are uncertain. For 900 years local legend suggested she was a Saxon Christian woman who was murdered by the Danes. They landed at Charmouth beach and pillaged the area. Her 13th century shrine is still in the north transept and takes the form of a stone altar like structure with three oval (mandorla) openings into which sick limbs can be placed in the hope of healing. Handkerchiefs or notes are sometimes left in lieu of people too sick to come themselves. In 1900, when repairs were being made a lead-lined casket was found containing the remains of a small woman who had died aged about 40. The words "HIC-REQUECT-RLIQE-SCE-WITE" ("Here rest the remains of St Wite") were found on the lid indicating that these are the remains of the saint herself. The survival of the shrine is remarkable and rare because all were supposed to have been swept away during the Reformation. "My son knows better!" He may know better, but he acts like a sniper! My military neighbors are unable to control their kid or numerous dogs. The boy shoots at our house and property with his pellet gun. Their fence has a hole that needs to be repaired that would prevent their dogs from running at large. They know about the hole because a neighbor called the cops because the military people's dog was stalking her in her yard. They refuse to fix the fence like it's against their religion or moral beliefs. The jr. sniper's mother denied that her son would shoot at our property until my mom told her I had the pellet. She then said "He didn't hurt anybody!" I hope they are the exceptional ignorant military family, and not the standard! Thankfully, they will move soon when they sell their house, hopefully for a putrid loss due to the housing slump! They developed an efficient technology and intricate social systems -- their was the most complex of all the Indians in California. The area's rich natural resources made agriculture unnecessary. Different foods became available as the seasons changed. Most important were fish, inculding tuna which came to the Channel in summer, and acorns which ripened in fall. In times of plenty surplus food was dried and stored for leaner months. As many as 1000 people lived year round in each of the major villages and towns. Towns were centers for political, religious and economic activities. Population concentrations fluctuated due to seasonal food-gatherings trips and important ceremonies. Most communities were located near lagoons or creek mouths. Dome-shaped thatched houses and granaries were arranged in rows along streets parallel to the beach. To glue, or not to glue? I've picked up a nasty looking gash on this Conti Gatorskin 700x28c tyre. It's a matter of months old and probably only done a couple of hundred miles (that's "cyle paths" for you!) so I'm keen to try and keep the tyre. I wonder if carefully gluing this section back together will help, internet opinion is so far divided. It's cutting across the tyre at an angle with an entry angle varying from about 45 degrees to very shallow, leaving a flap that can be pulled back with the thumb. This didn't puncture the tube and I can't see any of the tyre fabric... Brompton in our Lounge This happened with my wife's knowlege. Wow wonders never cease. I told her it was to cold and dark to fix a puncture outside and she was ok-ish with me fixing it inside. Turns out the tyre casing had split causing the puncture. That is why my Brompton has no rear tyre on it. I will buy one tomorrow. 272/365 Bad dye-job. Baaaad. Hah. This was originally light blue, the colour of my eyes. Well whatever. Boosting the colour & then trying to edit over didn't make this any better. Sorry. I was being a little lazy. I'd like to say I'm going to go back & tidy this up. But that would be a LIE. I spent the day clearing out my memory card on my camera & uploading & editing etc. while watching TV. I had dinner with my Mom & brother when they both got back, & then at 6.15pm I headed out to my Photog class. When I arrived there was only one guy there, & the teacher, so I hung around outside basically having a mini panic attack. Sometimes meeting new people can hit me really hard. Sometimes it's nothing. I mean, flying to Washington DC to hang out with teenagers around the world, that's no problem; walking into a virtually empty classroom sends my heart all a flutter. My Mom was trying to calm me down, & asked if I wanted her to come in with me. At that point I snapped the hell out of it, & said "I'm 18, how pathetic am I that my Mom's offering to walk into class with me?" So yeah. An older woman walked into class in front of me, so I sucked it up & told myself to get a grip, & then entered the classroom. The woman was sitting three seats away from the boy my age. My question was - do I sit by someone of my own gender, or my own age. Usually I pick gender. I shouldn't have this time. The woman was grumpy & didn't even bother to smile at me. The boy, on the other hand, was lovely. We have the same camera make, but his is being repaired. His name is Peter. We spent the whole class talking. Especially as the teacher was going over basic stuff like 'this is how you upload photos'. 3 women were there with ordinary cameras, claiming they didn't know how to use them. Pfft. That's silly. Everyone else wanted help with their DSLRs. After class I went & waited in the lobby area for 10 minutes, before getting annoyed & going to look for my Mom. She was taking this History of Western Art class, & it was running over by 10mins. As the class was filing out I saw my old Spanish tutor. We waved & chatted quickly - she used to take Spanish on Monday nights, so I guess that must have changed if she's able to take this class now. Conditions as we were driving home were awful. On the way here the fan wasn't clearing the windows quickly enough, & it was the same on the way back. I was trying to wipe the window as my Mom drove. & at one point she was staring at a traffic light set out in the middle of the road to warn about roadworks, & then she kept driving. I was like "Go around! Go around!!" Scary moment there. When I woke up this morning, I turned on the TV to watch the news. But what was that? The television (again) just showed some weird colours. All tries to fix this failed so i decided to open up the TV and look what's wrong. (Such things are part of my job..) I carried all things in the kitchen and took a shower. Danbo told me that he'll have a look at the TV - he knows what he's doing. As i came back into the kitchen, Danbo already screwed the whole Mini-TV apart and started troubleshooting. Sadly he (and me too) didn't find anything and my TV is still broken... Leaking Bedroom Windows Needs Tuck Pointing And/Or Caulking - Fix Me October 2011 - I have water damage on my soffits above my window in the bedroom. Though it is clear to anyone who bothers to look that the brick exterior of the building has not been properly maintained, ANCA is trying to tell me that they don't know if my water damage was caused by my leaving my windows open in the rain. They have however contracted to have the windows right below me repaired for the exact same reason. This repair needs to be made to both sides of both bedroom windows as well as caulking above the window since both bedrooms had water coming in from the top of my window frames. This was reported by me to a worker who said he was sent out by ANCA to inspect the window tuck pointing and yet I was left off the list for some reason. Possibly it's because they know my downstairs neighbor will rant and rave until she gets what she wants. If this is not the reason, I sure don't know what the reason is. If this point of entry is below the level of my soffit, then my water damage was likely caused by the same problem on the floor above me. AND, the damage circled in the pic is likely going behind my wall and into the soffit of the first floor. I went upstairs at the time of the rain that forced me to put down buckets and that unit owner was home and assured me that her windows had been closed at the time the storm started. While I don't necessarily believe her, I would assume she has the same tuck pointing problem with her windows on the 3rd floor as I have on the 2nd floor and as the 1st floor unit did have until recently when their windows were caulked and tuck pointed. I believe it is the responsibilty of the management company to routinely inspect and repair building damage BEFORE water is getting into people's units. And yet, they are trying to cop out on this by not fixing the obvious damage even after my wallboard has been damage by their neglect.
