This week, in honor of the late, great Domino magazine, I'm making all of the recipes that appeared in their last issue.

This is the prosciutto and goat cheese flatbread recipe. I left out the favas and added carmelized red onions and red pepper flakes. The arugula adds the perfect bite. The fresh pizza dough was bought at Whole Foods. We don't own a pizza stone, but cookie sheets dusted with cornmeal work well.

Verdict: Fab!...easy to make...love Whole Foods pizza dough...I want more of this...right...now.

The original recipes from Domino were courtesy of food stylists, Alison Attenborough and Jamie Kimm. They have a new cookbook out with Williams-Sonoma called 'Cooking for Friends,' a 'Domino staff favorite.' Already missing you, Domino staff!

August 31 2009 - Charging for a magazine that's one big ad?

I've enjoyed receiving and reading Kraft's food&family magazine in the past few years - they typically have quick and easy recipes that use very easily accessible ingredients.

But they've started saying that they will be turning this into a subscription magazine. Given the state of the economy, I have some sympathy for their endeavor. However, I have serious issues paying for a magazine when the ENTIRE publication is one huge advertisement for Kraft products. If they're hurting for $, then just stop the publication and put everything on the web! So, I will not be receiving this generally good publication any longer.

As much as there are a lot of objections for the online world and relationships - some of which have a true base - I find to have been become only richer inside by sharing with you.

Ribs

So, Angie really likes ribs. So we got this pre-seasoned rack from Wegmans. I seared them on the grill. Then we covered them in magic sauce (a bottle of bbq sauce and a can of beer mixed) then cooked them for 2.5 hours in our oven. Given we don't have a smoker or a slow cooker, this was as best we could do... and they were spectacular.

Kitten Peeking out of Cookie Jar - Japan

I'm not sure who made this jar, but it was definitely made in Japan during the PY/Miyao era. Japan mark is in green, which was used on all PY items, and the quality is there, but kitten doesn't have that real PY "look". Still, he is cute as can be and I couldn't resist! Dealer was in Canada, where so many of these cute jars come from. Has anyone seen him before? He was new to me and I just love him!

PY/Enesco Bear Head Cookie Jar

This is a wonderful jar who is also my buddy icon! She was made in the PY/Miyao factory, but bears an Enesco sticker. Enesco bought many products from PY in the 1950s/early 1960s, but only wanted their name on the items. That is why the familiar PY mark is not on this jar.

She is part of a set of bear head items. I have a group picture of many of the items in my photostream.

Paddling For Life. . .

Went today for some seakayak trip in skjalfandi near Husavik north of Iceland.
Looking for some whales paddling we got some hard wind later on ma by to much of it ;)
But well got home safe like always... Models from left Arni the Paddler and Me from the right. First rule always paddle with a umbrella you will never know when it will get wet. ;) You know... But well our passion is paddle in wild nature and our paddling group has the name "Paddling For Life" and yes so we do. There is nothing better than being in the middle of nowhere on a coast cooking noodles. . . probably on a place that no one have been before. ;) "With umbrellas" I need to take my light?s more often with me on those trips. . . . but well like you see my red kayak is not the biggest one, so i need to have them on top of it.

I was having breakfast this morning in one of my favorite cafes on the beach. Ok, so I decided to completely indulge and finally order the creme brulee french toast, (I've only been lusting over it since the first time I ever laid eyes on it, somewhere around 5 years ago). When I asked for the recipe, she pointed to a bookcase 8 levels high and said to look for 'breakfast at sunrise' so I wiped the drool from my mouth and started my search.

Turkey Cookies (Swedish Ginger Cookies)

Swedish Ginger Cookies

Cream 1 cup butter and 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar. Add 1 egg; beat till fluffy. Add 1 1/2 tablespoons grated orange peel, 2 tablespoons dark corn syrup, and 1 tablespoon water; mix. Sift together 3 1/4 cups sifted all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ginger, and 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves. Stir into creamed mixture; chill.
On lightly floured surface, roll to 1/8 inch thickness. Sprinkle dough with granulated sugar; press in lightly with rolling pin. Cut with floured scalloped, or diamond cutter (or, obviously turkey cutter). Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Top each with toasted blanched almond. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Cool slightly before removing from pan. Makes about 8 dozen cookies.
Notes: I forgot to put the sugar on top and I skipped the almonds.

Yes, you can cook a standing rib roast in the crockpot. - h

Delicious! Before I placed it in the crockpot, I quickly seared it on all sides in an iron skillet. I added no additional ingredients - no salt, no pepper, no liquids of any kind - nothing. Just plain meat. What you see are the meat's own juices that have been created by the cooking process. And yes, there is some melted fat atop it. Fat adds flavor - as do bones - which is but one reason why this cut of beef tastes so well, and is so highly regarded.

I used the recipe from "I Know How to Cook." The only modification was to add carrots, because we like them. I think the Julia Child version is much more refined, but it also takes more time, energy and effort. Dispite it's ease (or maybe because of it?), this version is my new favorite. It's quite good. I also splurged on a better bottle of wine to cook the dish, so that probably made a big difference too.
