Samuel George William Archibald (February 5, 1777 – January 28, 1846) was a lawyer, judge and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Halifax County from 1806 to 1836 and Colchester County from 1836 to 1841 in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly.

He was born Samuel George Washington Archibald in Truro, Nova Scotia, the son of Samuel Archibald and Rachel Todd. His grandfather David Archibald, an immigrant from Ireland, was one of the founders of Truro, and raised the boy after the death of his father in 1780. At the age of 15, he went to Massachusetts for further education, returning four years later. After his return, he studied law with Simon Bradstreet Robie In 1802, he married Elizabeth Dickson, the sister of Thomas Dickson, and, later that year, became probate judge for Colchester and Pictou districts. In 1805, Archibald was admitted to practice as an attorney and barrister. Archibald was named King's Counsel in 1817. In 1818, he was surrogate general for the colony's vice admiralty court. In 1819, he unsuccessfully prosecuted Richard John Uniacke, Jr. who took part in the last fatal duel in Nova Scotia. Archibald set up an oat mill in Truro in 1822. Archibald also served as Chief Justice for Prince Edward Island from 1824 to 1828, although he never resided on the island. He was speaker for the legislative assembly from 1824 to 1841. In 1826, he was named solicitor general for Nova Scotia. In 1830, Archibald was named acting attorney general after the death of Richard John Uniacke. He married Joanna Brinley in 1832, two years after the death of his first wife. He suffered a stroke in 1836 which left him for a time with paralysis of his facial muscles and difficulty speaking. In 1841, he was named master of the rolls and resigned his seat in the assembly. Archibald died in Halifax in 1846 of a severe stroke. (Wikipedia)

Missouri City's Finest Proudly Announces
Some Promotions and a New Addition to the Force

Continuing its commitment to provide citizens with superior leadership, the Missouri City Police Department has announced a new addition and some recent promotions on the force.

Captain Mike Berezin was named Assistant Chief of Operations, Keith Jemison joined the City as Assistant Chief of Administration, and Lieutenant Dwayne Williams was promoted to Patrol Captain.
The positions were formally announced at the March 7 City Council meeting and a promotional ceremony was held Friday, March 11 at the City's Community Center.
"These officers have impressive credentials and their commitment is indicative of the entire Department's dedication to keeping Missouri City one of the safest City's in the nation," said Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald.
In sharing their accomplishments, Fitzgerald noted the following about each officer:
Assistant Chief Berezin has been one of Missouri City's finest since January 1989 when he was hired as a patrol officer. One year later, he was honored as "Officer of the Year" by the Fort Bend County 100 Club; the award was also bestowed on him in 2001 by the 100 Club of Greater Houston. Berezin has also served as a crime scene investigator, a patrol sergeant, a lieutenant, and a captain. During his tenure as lieutenant, he was the patrol shift commander and while captain, he supervised the Patrol Division and oversaw the department's respected community outreach program through which supervisors are assigned to attend homeowners association meetings and collaborate with residents on crime prevention measures. Berezin is a graduate of the Leadership Command College at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville and of the 236th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va.
Assistant Chief Jemison brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the department. His record of service includes posts in Washington State, the Montgomery ISD Police Department and the U.S. Army. Jemison has served as a Police Officer, a Criminal Investigator, a Sergeant and a high school teacher in Chicago.

Jemison has achieved a number of accolades during his distinguished career, including earning:

*The Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster for meritorious service as well as the National Service Defense Medal with bronze star device
*Multiple Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education awards including Police Instructor, Crime Prevention Inspector, Sexual Assault and Family Violence Special Investigator, Field Training Instructor, Mental Health Peace Officer, and Firearms Instructor
*The Texas State Academic Recognition Award

Assistant Chief Jemison earned a Master of Arts degree in Political and Justice Studies and a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice Administration, cum laude. He is a graduate of the FBI Command College, the FBI Command Institute for Law Enforcement Executives, the FBI-Law Enforcement Executive Development Association Session #38; and the Critical Incident Command of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

Since 2005, he has been an Adjunct Professor of Government and Political Science for the Lone Star College System and has taught courses for other colleges and universities. Additionally, he has taught law-enforcement courses at area Police Academies, including the Montgomery County Sheriff's Academy and the Conroe Police Academy.

Jemison is a member of the Texas Police Chief's Association, the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association, the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, and the Police Executive Research Forum.

Patrol Captain Williams has been a key contributor since he joined the force in 1998 as a patrol officer. Williams has risen through the ranks and served as a Corporal, a Detective, a Patrol Sergeant and a Lieutenant. He used his proficiency in law enforcement to help create the Missouri City Police Department Bike Patrol Team and currently coordinates the unit. During his career, he has also worked with the Rice University Police Department as a patrol officer. Williams is a graduate of The Institute for Law Enforcement Administration School of Supervision and he has completed a master's peace officer licensing course at the University of Houston Downtown Police Academy.

Chief Fitzgerald also announced the promotions of Sergeant Brandon Harris to Lieutenant, Patrol Officer Tracy Cox to Sergeant, Patrol Officer Caleb Rule to Detective and Patrol Officer Bruce Moats to Detective. The Missouri C

Crime Declines In Missouri City:
Strategic Initiatives, Citizen Programs Drive Offenses Down

An in-depth Police Department analysis of major crimes committed in Missouri City during 2010 shows a 7.2 percent decrease in all offenses from 2009, the direct result of proactive prevention policies.

Overall, 333 fewer crimes were committed over the last year, a drop from 4,588 incidents in 2009 to 4,255 in 2010. And, Part 1 crimes involving the worst felonies declined 1.82 percent from 1,429 incidents to 1,403. Rapes decreased from 15 incidents to 10, robberies were down from 46 incidents to 42, burglaries dropped from 366 incidents to 305, and arsons dropped from 11 to 3. However, some challenges exist in this category, with four of the eight major crimes showing some increase. Murders increased from 1 death to 4, aggravated assaults moved from 61 incidents to 79, vehicle thefts rose from 57 incidents to 71, and thefts increased from 872 to 888.

To combat and curtail crimes, the Police Department has employed a number of tactics including strategic stings, increased patrols and community education programs. “Missouri City is one of the safest communities in the country thanks to the tireless dedication of every person in this police department,” Chief Joel Fitzgerald told City Council during a presentation on the 2010 figures on January 18. “Officers work around the clock to safeguard the City and to develop and maintain strong crime-fighting partnerships with our residents.”

Indicative of this public safety commitment is the increase of adult arrests for all offenses from 1,575 in 2009 to 1,951 in 2010.

Fitzgerald said the department’s overall response time to calls for assistance has remained steady. Departmental figures for 2010 show that officers’ response to emergency calls for service has remained relatively unchanged at fewer than 4 minutes.

For consistency in comparisons to cities locally and nationwide, 2010 statistics were compiled using the Uniform Crime Reporting method, which records only the most serious crime in any incident. The Federal Bureau of Investigation uses this reporting method to publish an annual report on the state of crime across the country.

In Missouri City, the Police Department’s uniform policies and increased visibility citywide continue to strengthen the force internally and externally. For instance, about 400 fewer calls for service came into the dispatch call center last year. A critical reason for the decline is the police community outreach program that “allows residents to have personal interaction with police supervisors and other staff at the community level,” Fitzgerald said. “We regularly attend homeowner association meetings. This allows us to mitigate some problems we encounter because officers directly answer residents and establish their own strategies to address problems in subdivisions. Their effectiveness is evident; they educate citizens and relieve residents of the need to call 911 for non-emergency issues.”

Fitzgerald added that “Council approval of hiring seven additional officers through the budget process will also increase our community visibility.”

Other departmental achievements last year were strategic stings to stem an increase in thefts from motor vehicles, gang violence and narcotics sales and distribution. Fitzgerald said staff analysts identified an emerging trend in thefts from motor vehicles. A coordinated response was organized, cutting incidents from 449 to 323. To crackdown on narcotics, Missouri City Police rejoined the Fort Bend County Narcotics Task Force and aggressively initiated investigations; there were 195 in 2010, compared to 107 in 2009. And, police facilitated crime watch training and gang awareness programs to inform citizens of prevention and safety measures.

In addition to public safety, Fitzgerald continues to emphasize training and education. Officers in the Criminal Investigation Division partnered with their Houston colleagues last year to learn cutting-edge analysis and examination techniques. Also, Fitzgerald recently introduced PowerDMS to the Force. The compliance management software helps to ensure efficient and effective distribution, review and acknowledgment of policies, online training courses and surveys. The software also enables supervisors to receive feedback from officers, to test their knowledge of procedures and to identify areas where improvement is needed.

As I was driving to my planned cemetery visit, I passed this little cemetery. I came back and didn't even see a sign naming it. It had such fabulous stones. Still, no name. I came home and did some research. Here are two articles I found on this little cemetery located in Palmyra, Pennsylvania:

The cemetery that no one wants.
April 10, 2008
BY MONICA VON DOBENECKA

No one wants the Cherry Street cemetery in Palmyra, where about 1,000 people are buried, including veterans of the War of 1812, the Spanish-American War and the Civil War.
The cemetery is supposedly owned by a private corporation started in 1867 and run by a board of trustees elected by lot owners. But the trustees are long gone and nobody can find lot owners. A bank account has $30,000 for maintenance, but no one is authorized to write checks. Volunteers have been mowing the grass, but they're tired of the work.
At a news conference today, representatives of two churches that have taken care of the cemetery for the past 140 years said will do so no longer and are turning their records over to the Borough of Palmyra.
Borough manager Sherry Capello said she has no intention of accepting them. "For 140 years, the churches accepted care of the cemetery," she said. "We feel they have the responsibility."
The cemetery began in 1867, when six people who were members of the predecessors to Palm Lutheran Church and Trinity United Church of Christ formed the Palmyra Cemetery Association. Trustees were elected by lot owners, but at some point the annual elections stopped. Church members continued to manage the cemetery.
According to Palm Lutheran church member Harry Fox, the churches got a letter from the borough in 2003 saying the sidewalk next to the cemetery needed repairs. The churches hired attorney John Feather to check into their legal authority and their obligation to care for the cemetery. Feather concluded they had neither.
Capello said the borough contacted the churches when neighbors started complaining that grass and weeds were getting high.
For a while, volunteers from the Brethren in Christ church agreed to take care of it because their church was across the street. But the dozen or so volunteers decided at the end of last year they wouldn't do it any longer.
In the meantime, Feather tried to find people who would act as temporary trustees to get the cemetery association going. He was unsuccessful. He also couldn't find lot owners, although a woman was buried there as recently as a year ago.
Fox said in a written statement Thursday, "The churches have concluded that their mission and ministry is not to operate and maintain a cemetery."
Feather said he would leave the cemetery records with the library or the historical society if the borough does not accept them. He said the Pennsylvania Borough Code and the Pennsylvania Burial Grounds Law give the courts the right to direct the borough to take over neglected cemeteries.

According to Capello, that can happen if a majority of a borough's property owners agree. The code limits the amount a borough can pay for cemetery maintenance yearly to $3,000, she said.
Bob Stewart, director of the Pennsylvania Cemetery Funeral and Cremation Association, said there are hundreds of abandoned cemeteries in the state, many of them started in the 1800's. "The state doesn't have anything for abandoned cemeteries," he said. "I don't know what you do in that situation."
Capello said the situation is sad. "You can't just walk away because you don't want to do it any more and throw it at the borough," she said. "What's really sad is that it is a cemetery, and it's like disrespecting the dead."

and an update from May 2009:

Borough to mow cemetery for now
Friday, May 01, 2009
BY BARBARA MILLER arbmiller@patriot-news.com
PALMYRA - Palmyra Borough Council will mow the "orphan" cemetery on West Cherry Street this summer, while the borough and two churches say they are hoping for resolution of the dispute over care of the site.
Council agreed April 27 to mow the cemetery through Oct. 1 and bill the cemetery's trust fund for the cost, which is estimated at $1,000 per mowing.
"Council concluded it's the right thing to do for the appearance of the community in general," said Keith Costello, council president. "And it doesn't put us in a bad position if we need to proceed with litigation."
Care of the cemetery is in dispute, because its board of trustees no longer exists. While members of two churches that once had representation on the trustees cared for the cemetery for 140 years, last year they said they will no longer do so.
After the borough tried to get the churches to repair sidewalk along the cemetery in 2003, the churches researched ownership and concluded this was not their responsibility.
The borough last year filed a petition in Lebanon County court asking the churches to be held respons

15 Sept 2009 - Communication To Avert Conflict

15 Sept 2009 - Communication To Avert Conflict

Communication is essential for a marriage, or any relationship for that matter, to work. Without effective communication and conflict management, two people who have the best intentions for each other may still end up emotionally distant.

There was a story about a couple who was filing a divorce. The man filing the divorce told the lawyer that he just hated the breakfast meal that his wife often prepared for him. In response, the wife said that she only prepared the meal because she thought it was her husband’s favourite. Truth was, she hated doing it because it was so difficult to prepare! She endured the inconvenience out of love for her husband. It only came to such an ugly outcome because neither of them took the initiative to speak their minds.

Now why would people prefer to keep their complaints and criticisms to themselves? It’s because they do not want to be rejected. Most, people, if not all, would like to be accepted and to be perceived as likeable in the eyes of others. So can you get your message across without hurting their feelings?

You can start by substituting negative statements with positive ones. For example, instead of saying “You don’t understand,” say “Let me explain.” Instead of remarking “You’re wrong,” say “Allow me to clarify.” Instead of stating “You failed to say,” just mention “Perhaps this was not stated.”

There are certain words that affect a person more negatively in comparison with other words that have the same meaning. Nothing could be more pleasing to the ear than hearing someone else say that you are right. In this case, be prepared to let other people know that you respect their opinions. You may add your comments at the end, but acknowledge them first.

Say:

“You’re right, although...”
“Great suggestion, however...”
“I agree with your opinion, however...”
“I would feel the same way if I were you, although...”
“I understand your situation, however...”

Reassure your counterpart that the decision made will benefit both parties. People need to feel that they have made the right choice.

Communication is a gift. Learn to use it wisely for the health of your relationships.

this photo initially appears to be expressing all kinds of things it's not. firstly, there is no multiracial altercation going on here between ben and these two men, although it kinda looks like there is. you will note however that ben is wearing the beautiful all-linen sweater that i just finished for him. and he is dashing as all hell.

we are in the parking lot across from the place where we had to go get fingerprinted for homeland security/FBI clearance for our adoption. we had packed up bags with knitting and writing and books, expecting to spend most of the day here. we were finished in less than half an hour. it was the friendliest govermnent office i have ever been in in my entire life. and, as someone who filed all her own divorce papers without the help of a lawyer once, i have been in some unfriendly government offices.

as you see by my fingers, they don't put any ink on you anymore to get fingerprints taken. i wish i could have photographed the process but i didn't even bother to ask. they put windex or some spray on your fingers, and wipe them, and then put them on what looks like a supermarket scanner. they roll the finger from side to side to get a full, wide impression, which shows up on a screen. it's very interesting. i had never seen my prints so clearly before. ben told me that on one of his pinkies there is a very obvious, large X within his print.

we could not believe how fast and easy this was. THEN, due to the great timing, we ran into charles and camilla's motorcade leaving the four seasons for their tour of mantua (and if you are from philly, you know just how funny a juxtaposition that is.)

Discipline

I am old and I have had
more than my share of good and bad.
I've had love and sorrow, seen sudden death
and been left alone and of love bereft.
I thought I would never love again
and I thought my life was grief and pain.
The edge between life and death was thin,
but then I discovered discipline.
I learned to smile when I felt sad,
I learned to take the good and the bad,
I learned to care a great deal more
for the world about me than before.
I began to forget the "Me" and "I"
and joined in life as it rolled by:
this may not mean sheer ecstasy
but is better by far than "I" and "Me."
--Brooke Astor
