A Grab Bag of DC Comics Suspended Animation Classic #508 Originally published September 13, 1998 (#36) (Dates are approximate) A Grab Bag of DC Comics By Dr. Jon Suter It’s time for capsule reviews of recent DC comics. As usual, some are better than others. After the young character Impulse was introduced in The Flash, I found him increasing uninteresting. Many comic dealers tell me that Impulse is one of their slowest sellers. Even so, DC has given him a major role in a new series, Young Justice. That series has its roots in a two-volume series, “World Without Grown-ups”. A superteam of Impulse, Robin, and Superboy operates with Red Tornado as a nagging nanny. The humor is strained and the art crude. I don’t see young readers finding this attractive. C +. DC’s 1998 annuals have the overall titles of Ghosts. Each title is independent except that the JLA annual connects and resolves all the stories. If you are choosy about annuals, I would suggest the Green Lantern and Superman entries. The Martian Manhunter annual is similar to issue 0 of a new Manhunter series. Both the superheroes annual and issue 0 could be good investments despite shaky art in the annual. Wonder Woman has appeared in two Elseworld stories. “Amazonia” puts her in a nightmarish late-Victorian setting. William Messner-Loeb’s script is interesting and Phil Winslode’s scratchy drawing is unusually effective. Patricia Malvihill’s coloring is also intriguing. The other Elseworld story, “Justice Riders”, puts the Amazon in the Old West. Writer Chuck Dixon seems inspired by Madelaine Stowe’s character in the western movie Bad Girls. A or A-. An Elseworld series, “Superman: The Dark Side”, examines the idea that the infant Kal-El (Superman) is raised on another world under villain Darkseid’s tutelage. This is very similar to the recent JLA: The Nail. In the first of three issues, John Moore and Kieron Dwyer have maintained the traditions of artists Jack Kirby and John Byrne in their depiction of the worlds of the New Gods superteam. An A, but I do prefer JLA: The Nail. Trouble Magnet Suspended Animation Classic #582 First published February 20, 2000 (#8) (Dates are approximate) Trouble Magnet By Mark Allen Trouble Magnet/DC Comics/four issue miniseries/22 pages at $2.50 each. Unfortunately, there is very little SF published in comics today that is worth the paper it's printed on. That's why DC's recently released Trouble Magnet by Ryder Windham and Kilian Plunkett, is a breath of fresh air. Whitlock is a member of a group called the Trouble Shooters, a science research team and group of adventurers. He is also a robot, and has a very serious problem; his memory bank (stored apart from him) has developed an identity of its own, along with a decidedly nasty habit of causing mayhem. The story deals with Whitlock's attempt to stop his memory bank, regain his memories, and deal with the physical and emotional damage done to those around him as a result of its running amok. This book corners the market on imagination, and an honest attempt to do nothing more than entertain the reader. And it succeeds. There are no lags or "dry spots" in the story; the reader is not bored with too much dialogue. At the same time, there is no danger of overdosing on action, as it is all relevant and well-positioned in the storyline. The book is well-balanced, and a joy to read from start to finish. Creative talents include Ryder Windham, writer, and artist Kilian Plunkett. As I have already praised Windham's handling of the story, I will move on to Plunkett’s artwork, which is amazing in its own right. Plunkett is wonderfully adept at "tech” art (robots, weaponry, space- ships, etc), and also has a superior grasp of human form and expression comparable to the likes of Kevin Maguire and Arthur Adams. On fact, Adams fans should check Plunkett out; it almost seems as if one of them is influencing the other.) There is never doubt about what one of his characters is feeling; you just have to look at their faces. From every angle, Trouble Magnet is a great investment in entertainment. Horace D. Grant Co. I, 4th MI. Infantry Cutler’s History of Kansas, 1883 HON. H. D. GRANT, Police Judge, was born in Chautauqua County, N. Y., March 26, 1835; reared in Herkimer County, N. Y., removing from the latter county (when he was eighteen years of age) to Illinois, where he worked on a farm for a short time; then settled in Michigan and resumed his studies, attending Michigan Central College, at Jackson. He raised Company I, Fourth Michigan Cavalry. In July, 1862, he was mustered in as First Lieutenant of his company, and in the ensuing month received his commission as Captain and took his company into active service. After serving two months and a half as Captain he was assigned to command of a battalion, and continued in command thereof until May 27, 1864, when he was taken prisoner near Kingston, Ga. After his capture he was taken to Charleston, and was one of fifty officers of the United States Army who were placed under fire of our own guns to prevent further bombardment of the town by the federal army. He was exchanged after two months in the confederate prisons, returned to his regiment, and resumed command, remaining in the service until December 11, 1864, when he was mustered out. The principal battles which he participated in were Perryville, Stone River, Chickamauga and Mission Ridge; was slightly wounded at Sparta, Tenn., in August 1863. Early in 1865 he took a stock of merchandise to Franklin, Tenn., remaining there about six months. He then returned to Michigan, where he remained for some time for the recuperation of his health, which had been considerably impaired while in the army. When he had recovered sufficiently to again attend to business duties, he embarked in railroading pursuits. His main interests being in Tennessee, he was appointed by Gov. Brownlow as one of the directors of the Nashville & Northwestern R. R., and was re-appointed to the same position by Gov. Senter, being identified with the road in its active management. He was General Baggage Agent, also for the Nashville & Chattanooga R. R. He was President of the Davidson Board of County Commissioners (Nashville being the county seat); by reason of that position he became Financial Agent of the county, and also Judge, having concurrent jurisdiction with the Chancery and other courts. He also held while at Nashville the offices of Special Assistant Internal Revenue Assessor, Alderman, Member of Common Council, and Chairman of the Fire Department. He removed from Nashville to Montgomery County, Kan., February 5, 1870, locating on northwest quarter of Section 13, Township 31, Range 16 east, in what is now West Cherry Township. What is now known as the Grant Schoolhouse is located on the farm where he first located and resided until 1873, when he came to Independence. The Judge was one of the early Commissioners of Montgomery County, serving also during the same time as Deputy United States Marshal, for this district in Kansas and for the western district of Arkansas, he having been, probably, the only man who ever held a similar position at the same time in two districts. In 1879 he was elected Justice of the Peace, and in 1881 he was elected Justice of the Peace and Police Judge. In 1883 he was re-elected to both offices. He is also United States Commissioner. He is a prominent member of the A., F. & A. M., being connected with the Blue Lodge, Chapter and Commandery. He was one of the prime movers to secure the organization of McPherson Post G. A. R. at this point, this lodge being now the oldest which has been maintained in Kansas. He was married at Millers Mills, Herkimer Co., N. Y., to Elizabeth C. Fosket. They have had two children, neither of them survive. The Judge is a lawyer by profession, and has been admitted to practice in the District and Supreme Courts of Kansas and in the Circuit District Courts of the United States. ______ South Kansas Tribune, Wednesday, March 29, 1922, Pg. 5: DEATH OF HORACE D. GRANT Major Horace D. Grant, aged 87 years, a citizen of Independence for over fifty years died on Tuesday, March 28th, at the home of Mrs. Bell Sanford, south of the city where he has made his home for several years, and where his wife died a year or more ago. He was an old soldier, a prominent Mason and popular member of the Elks Lodge. He is the last one of the county officers elected in 1870. The following notice of Maj. Grant was taken from the Montgomery County History, written several years ago: Major H. D. Grant was admitted to the bar of Montgomery county in 1871 but never engaged in the practice of law. He was born in Chautauqua county, New York on March 26th, 1835. He was reared ‘till he was eighteen years of age, in Herkimer county, New York, and moved to Illinois where he worked for a short time on a farm and then entered Central College at Jackson, Michigan. Shortly afterward he assisted in recruiting Co. “I”, 4th Michigan, and in July 1862, entered t Retirement I was given this cup at retirement. Legacy Parkway construction A sign I was able to take a picture of when Legacy Pkwy was under construction. See, they realigned Porter Ln to cross over the under-construction freeway (no grade separation) so access to a landfill could be maintained. Well, right where Porter crossed Legacy you could exit your car, walk a short distance north and snap a photo of the sign. I had to be careful to do it on days where crews weren't working so as to not disturb the contractor's pickup trucks zooming up and down the new, unused pavement. Also, that sign is oblong, a trait unique to a section of the parkway between exit 4 and just after exit 7 (reflecting the difference in contractor in this particular section) So far, Legacy Pkwy is the only road in Utah with Clearview. Running Water Community (2 Miles South) Attracted by abundant water from Running Water Draw, J. W. and T. W. Morrison established a ranch in 1881 with headquarters about ten miles west of here. Most of the early settlers in this region worked for the ranch. Later, several partners joined the operation, including wealthy cattleman C. C. Slaughter. In 1884 Dennis and Martha S. Rice purchased several sections of land along the draw south of this site. Rice hoped to start a town and lure the railroad across his land. He began Wadsworth Post Office in his dugout in 1890. It was renamed Running Water in 1891. Rice organized the Running Water Townsite and Investment Company and staged a picnic and barbecue, July 4, 1892, for the purpose of selling town lots. Soon the community had a blacksmith shop, grist mill, a two-story store building, several residences and churches. The early one-room schoolhouse was later replaced by a brick structure. Although the Fort Worth and Denver Railroad bypassed Running Water in 1928, it remained a thriving village for several years. In 1935 the post office moved to Edmondson Switch on the railroad and many residents relocated here. In 1937 the name of this settlement was changed to Edmondson. Evander Holyfield's "Comeback Of The Century" PPV Show All Hype Or The Real Deal Evander Holyfield's "Comeback Of The Century" PPV Show All Hype Or The Real Deal by Laz Izada ATLANTIC CITY-JUNE 1: Evander Holyfield waits in his corner during the heavyweight title fight against Hasim Rahman at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey on June 1, 2002. The fight was stopped after the 8th round in Holyfield's favor, after Rahman sustained a broken blood vessel on his forehead due to a headbutt. ( Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images ) Evander Holyfield Yes, you've heard it right. "Don't miss the comeback of the century," proclaims Ark Promotions' new press release circulating boxing internet websites. Ark Promotions is the promotional outfit that is bringing back from the dead a matchup between 48-year old former heavyweight champion Evander "The Real Deal" Holyfield (43-10-2, 28 KO's) against journeyman 38-year old Sherman "Tank" Williams (34-11-2, 19 KO's) taking place this coming Saturday night, Jan. 22, on pay-per view. This bout between the two over-the-hill fighters had previously been scheduled and canceled three times in Detroit's Joe Louis Arena, Nov. 5 and 12 and Dec 9. Low ticket sales and not having a TV contract were the major factors in the cancellations. Now all that is behind us with a per-per view contract and a catchy slogan (from Don King's playbook): "Redemption In America: The Journey Begins Now" for Holyfield, according to Ark Promotions. Ticket sales aren't a problem anymore, either, as Ark Promotions proclaims in their press release that "Due to overwhelming demand, a limited number of additional Standard Packages have been made available." A hotel fight weekend combination at The Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia, starting at $1,150 a pop "based on double occupancy". Oh, I forget to mention that there are single event tickets if you are not interested in spending the night going for only $500, mentions Ark Promotions in the press release. Yes, only $500, not $50. The $500 figure is not a miss print. If the fight is not canceled again and actually takes place this Saturday night, and if Holyfield wins, his "Comeback Of The Century" senior tour will continue. His next opponent in Denmark March 5 will be 45-plus-year-old veteran Brian Nielsen, who hasn't fought since 2002. If that fight takes place and Holyfield wins again, the "Comeback Of The Century" tour will really make some noise, as WBC President Jose Sulaiman has agreed verbally that Holyfield would fight Vitali Klitschko for the WBC Heavyweight championship. Holyfield claims that he will not stop fighting "until he is undisputed heavyweight champion of the world". Then afterwards, if Holyfield defeats Vitali, he could probably make his first defense against other recent senior tour entrants Ray Mercer and Tommy Morrison, who have scheduled separate bouts Feb. 25th in Montreal, Canada. There is word out there that Bert Cooper may also be making a return. All kidding aside, this situation must be addressed. There is nothing wrong with trying to make a living at any age; I would just hope that some authority or the Boxing Promoters Association, which met January 10th, and Oscar De La Hoya, who is scheduled to meet with Senator John McCain, would address this issue that is hurting the sport. I feel boxers should have some type of pension or savings/investing plan so they don't have to be fighting in their forties. Boxing associations should also adopt a mandatory retirement age of forty. Amateur boxing has a retirement age of 34. I personally feel sad for boxers past their prime trying to make a living and promoters hyping their fights. How do you feel ? U.S. Department of Homeland Stupidity No trip to the U.S. by a foreign visitor can be completed without a jab towrds the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Stupidity. What? You meant it's called Homeland Security? If you don't want to read the whole thing, just read the italic part. [No, he wasn't joking.] Me [speechlessly shocked and insulted]: In my head I was thinking: Well, I don't, but you guys should check to see if Bank(uptcy) of America, Shittybank NA, or Craze Manhattan Bank financed Suddam Hussein and Bin Laden when America USED TO BE FRIENDS with them 25 years ago. Alas, but I do need to take my mom, uncle and aunt to New York, so I muttered: No, I don't invest for Al-Qaeda. Does that obese, rude and stupid border guard seriously think that a Bin Laden collaborator would answer Yes to his inquiry? This is what the U.S. calls Homeland Security eh? MY INVESTMENT CLUB. MY INVESTMENT
MY INVESTMENT CLUB. WHAT STOCKS SHOULD I INVEST IN 2011. CONSULTING INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT. My Investment Club
Where is MY chocolate? I think I said something like "Hi wife, I hope some of my trail chocolates are left in my pack". From the laughter, I don't think there were any chocolate survivors. After finishing my loop hike up Peekaboo and down Spooky canyons, I hiked up the Dry Fork of Coyote Gulch to find my wife and her impromptu hiking partner, Karen. They had picked a nice shady spot for theif hiking break spot. Early Monday morning (4.19.2010), with a light day pack and cameras, we drove down the Hole In The Rock Road a little over 12 miles and turned into Escalante’s “Devil’s Garden”. I had driven the HITR road four times over the last few years for a hike at: Zebra and Tunnel slot canyons Davis Gulch (near the end of the road) Hurricane Wash (where my wife and I backpacked down Coyote Gulch in 2009), and Egypt Trailhead for a hike to the Golden Cathedral and Neon Canyon. On each of those trips I had no idea that Devil’s Garden existed. Not until I saw a flickr friend’s photos of Metate Arch in Devil’s Garden, was I even aware of it. So I made sure we had plenty of time to visit it on this trip. It was our first stop Monday morning. We really enjoyed it and had the entire area all to ourselves. After leaving Devil’s Garden we drove to the Dry Fork Coyote Gulch trailhead to hike down to the bottom of: Peekaboo; Spooky; and Brimstone Canyons. The plan was to make the loop hike, up Peekaboo and down Spooky. I wasn’t sure if my wife would be able to make it up and down this route, so we had discussed all the permutations of up and back hiking or her letting me make a quick run through it if needed. On the way to the outlet to Peekaboo, we met a lady hiker, whom I will call Karen. Her husband and bunch of hiking club members had already left to do the up Peekaboo; down Spooky route, and then with ropes and equipment, hike some of Brimstone. Karen had opted out and so was content to hike up and down Dry Fork and just enjoy the scenery. She hiked with us over to the short “climb” up into Peekaboo to give my wife a hand if needed, getting up into that canyon. I had brought leather gloves for us both and a short section of rope and nylon webbing to help my wife. To make this short, my wife got halfway up and we both decided it wasn’t a good idea for her to try to go farther. So, she and Karen worked up a plan to hike the wash together while I hiked the Peekaboo/Spooky route solo. I enjoyed the hike up Peekaboo. Slickrock hiking, dry, very scenic. Quiet. I found the obvious trail leading across the canyon rim that would run from the upper portion of Peekaboo over to the entry into Spooky. At least when I arrived I hoped I had arrived at Spooky and not the top of Brimstone by mistake. I had grabbed my map, both cameras, and leather gloves, but left my pack with water, candy, GPS, and more maps, with my wife. So I decided to continue down what I hoped was Spooky and pledged not to go over any pour overs that I couldn’t get back up. A short distance down Spooky I heard voices, which was a relief to me, unless they were coming UP Spooky as it is a narrow passage. It was Karen’s husband (I will call him Bob) and the hiking club, most of the hikers of my age (old). Bob and I got along well so we exchanged cameras and I followed his hiking club group on through Spooky back down to the Dry Fork of Coyote. There I thanked the hiking club for their company (at the time I had no idea there were so many of them since the narrow confines of Spooky allowed me to see and interact with only four of the members. I found my wife and Karen waiting in a cool shade part of Dry Fork and the three of us hiked back up to the trailhead together. I was really pleased to have completed this hike that had been on my “to do” list and that I had such an accommodating, understanding and helpful wife. My wife and I drove back to Escalante at a slow pace, and met up with our friends from Washington, (Jason and Lusha), that night for dinner. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Road Trip - Utah April 17th - 24th, 2010: My wife and I headed for Southern Utah, just before midnight on Friday the 16th of April (after she got off work at her part time job). We drove straight through to Southern Utah, to take advantage of the good weather forecast early on in our trip. Storms were forecast for later in the trip and in fact we got a pretty good taste of same on Wednesday the 21st. Here in outline form are the places we visited and hiked: Saturday 4.17.2010 > Rochester Rock Art Panel near Emery, Utah > The Moore cutoff road > Sinbad’s head pictograph panel (we camped under a pinon pine near here) Sunday 4.18.2010 > Black Dragon Canyon rock art panel (after first taking the wrong turn and doing some interesting four wheel drive travel way up the San Rafael River). Short hike. > Pictograph Canyon pictographs. Short but interesting hike. > Drive Hanksville, Torrey, Boulder, to Escalante (check into motel) Mond A sound investment My friend had this wicked mustache, and I couldn't help but paint him. This was the first canvas I ever stretched. I didn't do the best job. You can see the creases in the canvas from where the old painting was rolled and folded. The original artist entitled it "Self-portrait as a Dragon." Part of the dragon is visible from behind the girl's left leg.
