Living Room 2

The white chair and ottoman (left) is kinda dingy - maybe just needs a steam clean, but is also rather obtusive. I put the ottoman beside it for more seating and it was slightly better.

I am interested in having two padded benchs that are a single row book shelf that run the two windows. Just wiide enough to lay down for a nap in the sun and high enough that that they aren't hard to stand up from. I don't know if that invites people to lean on the windows though so maybe that's a no-no.

I also think the trunk in the middle of the windows is too big. I thought trunks - but for coffee tables and a bit smaller than there trunks. Can I use a trunk this big with the size of my couches?

I'm also getting rid of the other white ikea looking chair at the end of the front window

Mother's Day Present

This is what I got from my four year old on Mother's Day. What's that you say? Well that is egg.. and carpet. It seems he took four eggs and smashed them around the living room. It ended up with most of the couch and carpet being steam cleaned.

Dirty

If there is one thing my new apartment is, it's dirty. The between tenents cleaning was done by a wonderful woman named Cathy who lives in the house next door, and I'm beginning to wonder if she would know dirt if it hit her in the face. She really is sweet, and Viktor loves her dogs, but I'll be talking to the landlord once he gets back from Europe. I mean, still cobwebs on the ceiling, windows filthy, doesn't look like she mopped, soap scum caking the shower. I've been taking 'cleaning breaks' between studying for finals.

Julie Painted My Classroom Door

Sam gave me some paint that was left in Steven's room. Even though Julie was called into work later today, she drove to my classroom. She got the hot glue off the door and from around the window. She also removed the hot glue from the brick wall. Then she taped up the door and painted it with the black latex paint that I'd been given. I've decided that ONE COAT will be fine; especially, since Steven came and got the rest of the paint so that Patsy could paint her door. BTW: Julie, Steven took the small brush--not knowing that it was mine. He probably left the clean roller that Sam had given me last Saturday.

5D 1/15s handheld ISO1600 F4.5 55mm effective, dcraw > Gimp rotate, crop, gamma 1.75, strong contrast, then a mild USM with a high threshold (for a fullframe). Not too high or nothing would happen.

...something a little more ambitious :) after shooting the sunset behind Rosslyn I was on my way back to the car when "The Dandy" made its way downriver "right there", so I tried to get it as it steamed under me.

So there are many technical notes here (nothing unusual) but also I wanted to compare it to the camera jpeg, following this, and also to some 10D shots that I have like this. By the way you get this shot from about halfway across the 14th St. Bridge (this is where that Air Florida plane hit about 20 years ago, due to icing) but also you can get some great shots of the Georgetown Harbor from the Rt. 50 bridge which is ahead of the Arlington Memorial Bridge above.

The main thing that I will mention about this technically is that this is about the limit of the 5D for handheld shooting. You can get ISO3200 shots out of it but they are going to be significantly more noisy with lower DR than the results at ISO1600, so ISO3200 should really be left for desperation, and definitely get a good exposure if you use it because it won't withstand too much pushing. And of course there's the usual Canon CMOS streaking at high ISO in continuous-drive that shows up even at ISO1600 but is truly obnoxious at ISO3200 (it's something to do with the file i/o because it doesn't appear in the first frame of a burst). I get around this by shooting in single-shot mode and waiting for the disk I/O to finish before taking the next shot. Also the really low-light focus on the 5D is just barely acceptable, aside from the lens-blur away from center from shooting this wide-open this shot is not in super-good focus like you'd get with the D700, D300 and so forth, with the 51p AF system that Nikon has now. Is it still the "D3000" now that they have a D3000 camera? I don't know. Anyway under very-close inspection it's clear to see that the 5D shots aren't in great focus, and the 5DMk2 has the same AF engine. Not a bad fullframe, but not great either. But every camera has its problems. 5D: a great fullframe -certainly better than any subframe that you can buy in terms of SNR and resolution- but clearly no longer "King of the Hill" in the DSLR market, and not even really standing head and shoulders above the D300 in terms of "artistic quality" or even in FPS. That's a great camera for low-res shots, it's just not clean enough at high ISOs and it's a bit soft for high-detail scenes. Still given suitable conditions you can get some great shots out of a D300. The problem is that I can get great shots out of a G9 too, given suitable conditions.

Full Moon and Prayers (Writing)

I am reminding myself of who I was before becoming a manager of an adult care home...
I was many things at different times, and one thing was I was a creative writer... I did not have a camera at that time, and I used words to paint pictures. These writings came from deep inside, flowing out through the ink of the pen, onto the page as though by magic.

I am sharing some of those writings here, bringing together the words and photos for the first time.

Full moon and waterfalls...
.. as I stepped out the door and breathed in the full moon scented air, crisp and washed clean, I suddenly felt like walking. I walked down the steep street next to the house, past the house of the girl who left the rose to see if she had yet found the pots of daffodils and hyacinth on her porch (not yet) and on down towards the heart of this tiny old riverfront town. Not too far, because it became apparent that I have not been taking walks lately and the knee started hurting a bit. I wandered through various side streets, back up the hill towards home, enjoying the smells and sight of the moon shining through a window in the high gray blue cloud cover. I remember this feeling... and how long has it been since I allowed this to happen??? Wow. The knee mellowed out after a few blocks, the hips were starting to lose their kinks... the back loosening up a bit. Ahhh....

As I came back up a different hill towards the house, I could hear the youngling waterfall giggling down the cliff across from the house... so I headed up past the neighbors gate to sit by the gift of water for a bit. This waterfall only happens part of the year, particularly when the snow above is melting, little rivulets of snow melt wandering down the little furrows and ravines, dropping over cliffs and seeking each other as they race down the face of the cliff, down through the ditches of Bingen, and into the Columbia river to join ranks with all the other rainwater and snow melt and underground springs as they ponderously navigate the channels of the mighty Columbia the last 100+ miles to the Pacific ocean.

I used to come over here to pray, especially under the full moon when the water was running, about this time of year 2 years ago...so I went over and washed my face in the water that still smelled like the clouds and the earth.

I prayed for all Mankind with that water from heaven ...knowing that the water was on it's way to the ocean and so is directly connected to the water all over the Earth. I prayed for myself too, and found myself finally feeling that connection with earth and heaven and all life again... I once more was aware of truly being part of the whole, one of the elements of this spiritual creation, in a way I have not felt since sometime before mom died. I thought something had died inside me when she left her body... maybe it did, but through the magic of this creation life is being reborn once again in my being.

I stretched myself out on the wet grass and sharp rocks, and dug my fingers into the earth, breathing in pure life energy with my nose pressed into the bosom of the mother, and felt the warmth of my own exhaled breath as it touched the small plants below me. with all my being I thanked creation for the gift, left my tears of mingled sorrows and joys mixed with the dew on blades of grass, said goodnight to sister moon, and meandered across the street, down my lava rock steps and back to my temporary home to finally eat dinner and write of my experience.

3. Hubby number 4 is Scott and he is my soul mate I met through Lava Life. He tells everyone that he is lucky #4 and proud of it!! He supports my addiction/passion for Blythe and loves me unconditionally! We have been together 7 years.

4. I have had tickets to BlytheCon since last August and to say I am excited is the biggest understatement ever!

5. My world is surrounded by men. My only girlfriends are the ones I have met on flickr and BK and I count myself very fortunate!

6. I am lactose intolerant but I've eaten ice cream almost every day for the past two weeks! The side effects have not been pleasant!

7. The Stanley Cup Playoffs have started and of course I am cheering for the Vancouver Canucks. Whoo hoo!!!!

8. We leave for vacation in a week and a half and all I can think about is where I am going to watch the George St. Pierre UFC fight on the 30th!

9. I am turning 47 this summer. At any given time I feel like I am living between 25 thru 55!

10. The only cosmetic enhancement I would consider is getting veneers on my teeth or dyeing my hair. The white is slowly overtaking the black and I really don't like it one bit!

11. I love love love that there are male Blythe collectors! That makes me so happy!!

12. I was a scrawny, sickly, unhappy kid. I now exercise compulsively and try to be as kind and generous to others as I can.

13. Housework sucks! I hate laundry, dishes, floors, dusting, cleaning bathrooms, etc. The only thing I don't mind is vacuuming because I have a Dyson and it rocks!!

14. I would like to be more girly and feminine but I wouldn't know how!

15. Totem poles freak me out!!!

Galleys

This is my last-ditch effort to derust my galleys and keep them derusted.

After using Evapo-Rust, I used a suite of products from the POR-15 company. First I treated the galleys with "Marine Clean" to clean and degrease them. Then I used "Metal Ready" to etch the metal and coat it with zinc phosphate. The latter product unavoidably causes some slight surface flash rusting, but it's imperceptible to the touch.

Finally I brushed on POR-15 Rust Preventive Paint, which chemically bonds to the metal instead of just coating it. Unlike other coatings, it requires a moist environment to cure, and it is strengthened by continued exposure to moisture. It actually adheres best to rusted metal, hence the name POR: Paint On Rust. I used the "clear" color. It also comes in black, silver, and gray, and it can be top-coated with any other paint.

Sanding away surface rust

I started stripping some of the most badly rusted bits of the body. Thankfully, its only surface rust ... though for every few square inches I do it takes a lot of elbow grease to get down to clean metal.
Once I've got the rust off, I spray the area with corrosion inhibiting metal primer.
The primer will be stripped later when I get the body sandblasted, its just to keep the metal safe until then.

Plastic Counter Top

This was the old one that was taken out. It had ripples in it and a big hole where a stove use to be, but the stove had to be replaced (omg it was morbidly crime scene nasty) and moved to the wall instead of the center of the room.

Stoves are made with the back that sticks up like 8 inches or so, and they have buttons on them. The one that was in had no back and the buttons where on the front where little granbabies could reach them, plus to replace one of these unsafe stoves cost $1,000 more than a regular wall stove.

Larry had to climb under the house on a 90 degree day and relocate the stove wires.

She came to me first within my dreams. A hauntingly beautiful image that ran across and endless sea of rice fields and played havoc within my dreams. She would peek at me from behind a curtain of midnight black hair and I would get lost in the jade green forest of her eyes. Always the coquette, always running from me. Her laughter would ring across the universe and draw me to her like a moth to flame.

I had been married by this time for 5 years to a very conservative man. Adequate enough of a lover, but lacking in the creative end of the spectrum. We had fallen into a routine, the routine that all married people eventually fall into. It was as if every day life had robbed us of romance. Gone were the sweet words and gentle caresses, being replaced with "Are you in the mood?" and hurried encounters of rushed excitement all because of an early start to the next day of endless bills and priorities, that never seemed to include "us".

I remember the day that she materialized into my reality as if it were yesterday. My birthday was coming up and so I decided to treat myself to a day at the local beauty spa. I had taken a weeks worth of vacation and planned on thoroughly enjoying myself. My better half had a business trip planned and wouldn't be back until the following week. It was actually quite funny how he always seemed to be able to disappear around holidays and special occasions, sort of like his way of avoiding intimacy.

I entered the establishment on Manchaca and Stassney and was mildly impressed. Very clean and well lit with an oriental motif and relaxing classical music. I was led through the various stations of manicure, pedicure and waxing. Lastly came the one thing that I had looked forward to most of all, a full body massage. I entered the room to find a slender figure with her back to me. In a heavy accented voice she informed me to go into the adjoining room and remove my clothing, all this being said without her once turning to me. I feel like if she had turned, I might have fled in that very instant.

I quickly removed my clothing and wrapped the big fluffy white robe that the spa provided around me and entered the massage room once more where I was instantly stopped in my tracks as I came face to face with the woman in my dreams. Her green eyes widened as she stared back at me, that being the only sign of recognition, for then she quickly took the situation in hand, ordering me to lay face down upon the table and gently removing the robe from my body. I was mortified.

"My name is Jade" she whispered in my ear "and you are at my mercy." My head jerked up and blue eyes locked with green. "Excuse me? I don't think I heard you correctly." She smiled sweetly and giggled. "I will start slow with a lavender and jasmine oil. It is your favorite scent, is it not?" "How could you possibly know that" I squawked. Again the sweet smile. "Because you smell of it" she whispered as she ran a finger down my spine. I shivered and an instant dampness formed between my thighs.

She quietly spread a light sheet over my hips and applied the oil to her hands. Her touch was at once tender and strong. Her hands upon my body sent a small tremor running through me, igniting a fire deep below. I was in a euphoric haze and half asleep from her administrations when her hand dipped below the sheet and set about massaging me in a whole new manner. My gasps and moans letting her know that she was doing everything just right. Her hand circled and dipped and brought me to the edge only to leave me hanging as she withdrew. I raised my head to see her dip her fingers into her mouth and taste the very essence of me. "Time's up" she smiled wickedly and a slow crimson stain spread across my cheeks as I wrapped the sheet around me and got off the table. My legs were shaking and unstable and I had a hard time walking to the dressing area for my clothes. "Bitch" I muttered under my breath as I hastily jerked my clothes back on.

I flung the door back open non too gently and found her leaning against the outer door with a card in her hand. She nonchalantly strolled over to me, peeling back my low cut sweater and placing the card between my breasts. "This is so you can call me and I can finish what I started" she smirked as she placed a light kiss upon my lips.

Even With Glasses the Water is Murky

Round 3 of the Battle of the Pool Algae Monster.There is no reason why a pool refillled less than a year ago has gone through three cycles of algae build up. Each rpund was a new set of chemicals (last was Phospphate reducer) that never fully cleared the water. After getting tired of questionable advise from pimply faced kids at Leslie's, I go to crusty old John and the old style pools tore, who is sure it is tyhe fault of a filter more than 10 years old leaking, and likely not able to clean. He easily suggests a way to get the water started clearing up- 12 gallons of liquid chlorine... more or less, a pool WMD.Who will win the pool cure battle? If any one tells you that looking after a pool is easy – laugh at them.

Now to come clean – I didn’t need half that stuff this morning. I just vacuumed the bottom, added a little Ph increase and a dose of the floc. for good luck. Then I went for a swim in the nice clean water.

Step 9. Second focusing element.

As can be seen the second element is actually a group incased in a small housing of it's own. There is a retaining ring at the bottom of it with two small wholes to get it unscrewed. I could not - no matter how much solvent I put in there. The must have used a stronger glue to affix it. But that is not important for cleaning purposes. Note that the whole thing is covered in thick layer of grime.

Luckily the grime comes off easily using vinegar, Eclipse cleaning fluid or any other lens cleaning solution.
