The tannery is made up of stone vessels, lined up like honeycombs, each filled with a different color of dye. First the hide is soaked in a vat of pigeon feces for its ammonia, and then transferred to other vessels with different vegetable dyes like poppy (red), turmeric (yellow), mint (green), and indigo (blue). In this particular photo you can see a lot of white vats, which are filled with ammonia to clean the leather, later, it is dyed in the colored vats for 4 days. When the dying process is complete, they are dried under the sun. Once the hide is dried, they are scraped, stoned, and polished into drums, jackets, babouches (Moroccan slippers)…etc. This practice of leather making has been passed down from generation to generation and these men that work hard under the hot summer sun, enduring the smell, in order to produce these leather goods keep to the traditional practice of leather making.
