Sociedade Flor Acoriana Chapel Window Over Entrance

A dove symbolizing The Holy Spirit is surrounded by heavenly rays in this transom window for the Portuguese Sociedade Flor Acoriana chapel in Chowchilla, CA. Oliver and Virginia Espinola are John's late uncle and current aunt. Hung over the entrance doors, the window measures 30 in. (at peak) by 72 in. Old is New is Old

Long time since I've done any kind of Fiero update, hasn't been fun.

Nearly a month ago I ordered new exhaust headers to fix a leak. Although advertised as "stock fit replacements", this was far from the case... as the guy who made them changed the design without taking nearby components (air cleaner hose being one) into consideration. It also did not connect to the downpipe, which had I kept going with the installation would have meant limping the car with no exhaust to another shop to connect the headers to the plumbing going to the muffler, as my primary shop can't weld. Strike one.

On top of this, several components had to be altered to accommodate the headers... advertised that only the ignition coil needed to be mounted up an inch. The distributor ALSO had to be turned (with the plugs rotated to compensate), AND the vacuum canister had to be moved. Strike three.

So, we finally get the fit figured out, after butchering a good part of the motor, and then we go to bolt them on... cylinder head cracks at the mounting point for an exhaust manifold bolt, and it can't be tightened! New cylinder head ordered, and the damn headers are going back. One complication after another, and the guy who made them "forgot" a good chunk of information regarding installation. Strike three... HUGE pain in the ass!

The stock exhaust manifolds are going back on once the cylinder head is finished, albeit a little cleaner. I've also taken the tin-foil heat shield off the crossover pipe for now, and I'm looking for an 85-87 3-piece set to replace it, since the old one looked like crap.

Which brings us to the picture, I figured since they were off I'd clean the plenum and valve covers... and wow they look like shit!

I wanted to get them powder coated but couldn't sit and wait any more with the return time (about two weeks), so I offered to trade my set plus some cash for a freshly done set my friend was sitting on. It looks awesome and I can't wait to get it in the car!

Afterward I need struts done, and hopefully that should be it. I'll be missing the entire month of May as far as car shows go, and I am praying things will be ready for Nostalgia Days.

Once Felix is roadworthy again, I am going to start saving to do a down payment on a 2011 Ford Taurus. Test drove one yesterday and I love it! No, I am not getting rid of the Fiero... it will likely go on collector insurance (and antique plates in 2013). At this point, however, I need a reliable car for a daily driver... Felix will be retired to show car duties.

A Classic Cash Register

This was in the back of my mom's business, but due some clean up and some rearranging. I was told to take possession of this item. I got help and loaded it into my car and took it back to my apartment.

From what I have been told, the cash register was used by by great grandparents in the store they had. From the label on it, it is from the National Cash Register Co. It is electric and stills runs and with a few buttons pushed and the crank twisted the cash drawer will open.

It is a side project to clean this up, to look a little better. Some of the paint is a little flaky.

(note: there are some marble pieces that set in place right over the cash drawer that I have, but not pictured).

021:365 Scrub in the Tub

This was inspired in part by the HNT group on flickr (Half-Naked Thursdays). I hope I hope I hope I don't regret posting this.

This is a peek at one of my favorite cleaning tasks: scrubbing the mildew out of the grout in the shower. As Jana can tell you, I'm far from perfect in the domestic realm, but I get a lot of zen pleasure out of this one, and scrub a section each time I shower.

March 10th

Today was a wedding shower for Ashley! Her first of four this month! It was hosted by Andy's (fiancee) family and it was cool to meet so many people from his life. I feel like I know him better, and I appreciate that. Being a Maid of Honor is really more of a honor than I can really express, and it's so cool to say I have known this girl forever. She really is special to me. Plus, I don't think it would be a wedding without Miss Otis there, right Ash? :)

It looks like I am picking my nose but I'm not. Just so you know. :)

Also, I kind of want to fake a wedding just so I can get a lot of presents. Although my registry would probably have way more cleaning than cooking supplies. Also, can you register for gift cards? That's really all I would ever want (and as a result that's really all I ever give.)

Day 160 / Stick 'em up

I've been attempting to clean my excessively messy apartment (or really, my bedroom) as my parents and rockin' maid of honor are arriving tomorrow. There has been some success, but also quite a bit of procrastination and silliness.

UK - London - The City: Lloyds of London

The Lloyd's building is the home of the insurance institution Lloyd's of London, a British insurance market. It serves as a meeting place where multiple financial backers or "members", whether individuals (traditionally known as "Names") or corporations, come together to pool and spread risk. Unlike most of its competitors in the reinsurance market, it is neither a company nor a corporation.

Named after Edward Lloyd who founded a coffee shop on the site in 1688, it was designed by architect Richard Rogers and built over eight years from 1978 to 1986. Like the Pompidou Centre, the building was innovative in having its services such as staircases, lifts, electrical power conduits and water pipes on the outside, leaving a clean uncluttered space inside. The 12 glass lifts were the first of their kind in the UK. The building consists of 3 main towers and 3 service towers around a central, rectangular space. Its focal point is the gigantic Underwriting Room on the ground floor, which houses the famous Lutine Bell. The Underwriting Room (often simply known as 'the Room') is overlooked by galleries, forming a 60-metre (200-foot)-high atrium lit naturally through a huge barrel-vaulted glass roof. The first four galleries open onto the atrium space, and are connected by escalators through the middle of the structure. The higher floors are glassed-in, and can only be reached via the outside lifts. The 11th floor houses the Committee Room, an 18th century dining-room originally designed for the 2nd Earl of Shelburne by Robert Adam in 1763: it was transferred piece-by-piece from the previous (1958) Lloyd's building across the road. The Lloyd's building height is approximately 76 meters (250 feet), and features 14 floors. Each floor can rapidly and easily be altered with the addition or removal of partitions and walls.

The first (1928) Lloyd's building was demolished to make way for the present one. However, its main entrance at 12 Leadenhall Street (pictured here) was preserved, and forms a rather incongruous attachment to the 1986 structure.

Day 91.365 - We Can't Afford To Be Innocent

I have only had health insurance for one year of my adult life (22 to 23) and I never used it. This is a fact that surely keeps my mother awake late at night. The cover story of New York magazine last week was about the young and uninsured. The feature illuminated how the cleverly named "young invincibles" get through their twenties "relatively unscathed and 'choose' to live without insurance." They (we) rely on things like yoga, vitamins and the grace of god.

New York offers a few free and low cost options to its insurance-less gamblers. It's not the highest quality service, but beggars are not, in fact, choosers. And, I tell ya, nothing equalizes the population like spending the morning in the waiting room of the free clinic. I decided it would be kind of responsible of me to get a quick check-up before I leave the country for a few months.

*Knocking on wood as I write this.*Since I started living healthier, I almost never get sick. I pay attention to my body and hope for the best. It may not be the smartest way to live, but I am a bit of a danger junkie.

Oh, and in case you wanted to know, everything is clean and shiny. Even my hiny.

03/30: UK Journals 11 and 12

I've been keeping a daily journal for about three or four years now. About 20 of them are in storage back in Texas. When we moved to England in February 2007 for a three year stint, I started numbering my books, beginning with UK #1, of course.

I finished UK #11 today. It's always bittersweet to finish a book. The old one is a dear friend, after all. The new one? Well, there's the fear of the ultimate blank page. But I find that as soon as I make my first mark, ahhh. That's better.

the size is 5 1/2" x 7 1/2", the paper inside is 5" x 71/4" I would cut back on the front and back with dimension by a 1/4" But it is good the way it is. I am very pleased. The paper is all cp 140# Fabriano Artistico.

National festival of Sri Lanka in April 12-14

In April (the month of Bak), when the sun moves from the Meena Rashiya (House of Pisces) to the Mesha Rashiya (House of Aries) in the celestial sphere; Sri Lankans begin celebrating their New Year or Aluth Avurudhu (in Sinhala) and Puththandu (in Tamil). It marks the end of the harvest season and also coincides with one of 2 instances when the sun is directly above Sri Lanka. A new year of the Saka era begins with each festival.

However, unlike the Western celebration of the new year at midnight on December 31st, the Sri Lankan New Year begins at a time determined by astrological signs. Also unlike western traditions; the ending of the old year, and the beginning of the new year occur several hours apart from one another (this span is determined by astrology as well) - this period is, aptly enough, referred to as the nona gathe (neutral period). During this time Sri Lankans are, according to custom, encouraged to refrain from material pursuits, and engage solely in religious activities and traditional games.

The date upon which the Sri Lankan New Year occurred, while determined by astrological signs, also tends to coincide with the end of the harvest season - for this reason, many farming communities celebrate the new year while gathering fruits that have fallen from their trees.

Cultural rituals begin shortly after the beginning of the new year with the cleaning of the house and lighting of an oil lamp. In some communities, women congregate to play upon on the raban (drum) to warn others of the incipient change in the year.

Families indulge in a variety of rituals which are carefully determined by astrological calculations - from lighting the fire to making the kiri bath, (milk rice) to entering into the first business transaction and eating the first morsels.

Once these are done, the partying really begins as families mingle in the streets, homes are thrown open and children are let out to play. The ubiquitous plantain is dished out alongside celebratory feasts of kaung (small oil cake) and kokis (crisp and light sweetmeat, originally from the Netherlands).

Aurudu has become an important national holiday for both the cultures of the Sinhalese Buddhists and the Tamil Hindu Sri Lankans, and is unique as such, as it is not celebrated elsewhere in the world.

History
The mythological conception of a `Aluth Avuruddha' is that the Prince of Peace called Indradeva descends upon the earth to ensure peace and happiness. He comes in a white carriage wearing on his head a white floral crown seven cubits high. He first dips, like a returning space capsule plunges, breaking earth's gravity, into a `kiri' or sea of milk.

The actual history of the New Year goes back to primitive period in Sri Lankan history. Various beliefs, perhaps those associated with fertility, gave birth to many rituals, customs and ceremonies connected with the New Year. The advent of Buddhism in the third century BC led to a re-interpretation of the existing New Year activities in the Buddhistic light. The majority of the people in the country were Buddhists, and as such, it is that the Buddhist outlook was predominant in transforming the New Year rites to what they are now.

Hinduism, on the other hand, existed side by side with Buddhism, in medieval times. New Year practices interpreted in the Hinduistic way developed among the Hindus. Buddhism and Hinduism were historically connected with each other. Their philosophies were running along parallel dimensions, except for certain ultimate truths concerning the self, the way to achieve emancipation and the nature of a creative god and nirvana (which Buddhism denies). There was no serious contradiction in New Year rituals that are found among the Buddhists and Hindus.
Rituals - Customs

The customary bathing for the passing year is equally important facet. Herbal bath gives physical purification. When one takes a herbal bath over the entire body, anointed with gingelly oil or mustard oil that provides a soothing effect for the body. Herbal baths are prescribed in Vedas too.

For this year, water mixed with the Juice of Bo leves is recommended. Body massage and herbal bath promotes blood circulation, and it is considered the best method of maintaining positive health. Herbal baths are prescribed as a method of treatment in many nervous disorders and diseases of the muscles and joints.

Another salient feature of the New Year is to respect the elders and to strengthen relationships with neighbours. Usually, visiting relations and friends and exchanging presents, greeting them with a sheaf of betel is the order of the day. Betel is considered a sacred herb with many medicinal values. Cumin enjoying a tasty snack. One that, unfortunately, makes Gumbo violently vomit with only the tiniest taste. That means Gumbo can't be around when I offer this treat, and I have to be sure that every last morsel is off the floor. That's what canines are for, right?

We are rapidly progressing toward an all-BaRF diet in our home. Amazingly, we will go through two pounds of meat each and every day. That's what happens with eight felines, though. Food goes fast. Even more amazingly, all eight cats are on-board with the diet. Of course, Vidalia, Curio, Grigsby, and Gumbo immediately embraced the raw food. Gradually Cumin and Ariel joined. Ariel enjoys the meal but requires at least ten undisturbed minutes to eat. THAT can be a challenge. Especially with Curio egging her on to abandon her food. He's not allowed near her, but (just like little kids) knows how to push her buttons from across the room. Sigh. That means Curio downs his food in twenty seconds then spends ten minutes locked in the bathroom. And Ariel gets to enjoy her whole meal.

Raven has decided that she enjoys the raw food and no longer turns up her nose and walks away. This morning she downed it all and licked her plate clean before licking a few other plates clean as well. The other hold-out has been my beloved quirky MoMo. Hard to believe, but now he bellies up to his dish and downs his full BaRF meal. Eight happy felines. Well, Curio's happy once I let him out of the bathroom, lol.

Two pounds per day. . . sixty pounds per month. . . I'll do bulk orders, but that's still A LOT of food. I need containers to freeze them. Thankfully Kevin has a new fridge in the kitchen, so we have both a fridge and a freezer in the basement. Will need to purchase taurine to add to the food. So far all the food has been supplemented, but bulk orders aren't. Taurine is such a must. The store puts out a handout indicating that no added taurine is needed, but my own research raises questions, and there's no evidence that too much is harmful (except for my dear Raven with her kidney issues). I'll be careful with her food. And have her get her kidney function rechecked soon.

124/366: dusting up yesterday

Ah, spring cleaning day! It's actually an on-going process in our ~~small~~ cozy home, but we wanted to be adults and actually dedicate a whole day around straightening up together. Lots of much-needed purging ensued (thank goodness!).

As usual, along the way, I had to move things around, including my old journals, from one place to another. I took a trip down memory lane for a few minutes and kept going. I like catching up on the past, especially events and people that I haven't thought about in years. It's amazing how much you can forget or just throw into the farthest reaches of your mind.

Those places get quite dusty and in need of care every once in a while, too. I don't like to dwell on yesterday too much, but I've found it useful to have a present day perspective on my past. It's interesting to see what kinds of ideas I had adopted growing up that have contributed to who I am now and flashes of other things that I discarded.

Some hives are performing so well they have quickly run out of space and present a chance for swarming - so to avoid that happening (its ok but only under controlled circumstances) we add a top box with new wax frames.
We use a smoker tosubdue the bees - it makes the eat when they smell the smoke and they gorge until they cannot bend at the waist and drive their sting into you. (GuardsTerminology coming out there).
