New York Public Library, Port Richmond Branch

New York Public Library, Port Richmond Branch

Port Richmond, Staten Island, New York City, New York, United States

Opened on March 18, 1905, the Port Richmond Branch of the New York Public Library is one of four Carnegie branch libraries on Staten Island and one of sixty-seven in New York City, built with Andrew Carnegie's 1901 donation of $5.2 million which established a city-wide branch library system. The distinguished and prolific architectural firm of Carrere & Hastings designed the Port Richmond Branch as well thirteen other Carnegie branch libraries and the Main Building of the New York Public Library. The library, prominently sited on a comer, is Classical Revival in style with a center entrance highlighted by a columned portico above a flight of stairs leading to an interior brightly lit by large arched windows. Port Richmond has been a major village, port, and commercial center on Staten Island since the early nineteenth century. The library has played a prominent part in Port Richmond's social and civic life for nearly one hundred years.

Subsequent History

The Port Richmond Branch has continuously operated as a library since its opening in 1905 and has adapted to serve the changing community. In the early twentieth century, the library was well-known for its collection of Danish and Norwegian books. As the ship building industry grew on Staten Island during World War I, the library responded to requests by assembling one of the largest collections of books on ship building in the New York Public Library system. In 1938-39 a one-and-one-half-story brick rear addition, which reflected the design of the original library, was built with Works Project Administration funds.

A rear first floor reading room, a second floor custodian's apartment, and a basement auditorium were created. Auditoriums or community rooms were original features in many of the Carnegie libraries and they have been used extensively for programming by the libraries over the years. The auditorium in the Port Richmond branch, Chimes Theater, is a small theater with a raised stage. Custodians' apartments were also regular features of the Carnegie branches. There have been several small renovations in the last three decades, including roof recladding in 1967 and window replacement.

Description

The Port Richmond library is located on the corner of Bennett Street and Heberton Avenue, set back on a lawn which is bordered by hedges.^ A wide concrete walk and a flight of concrete steps, with recent metal railings at the sides and in the center, lead to the entrance. The side facade on Heberton Avenue is set back slightly and contains a non-historic concrete access ramp with metal railing leading to the basement of the rear addition.

A tall flight of brick steps with a metal pipe railing leads to the side entrance in the addition. The rear and west side alleys are enclosed by a non-historic chain-link fence and a brick wall.

The library is a freestanding, three-bay masonry structure with a T-shaped plan. The main block is one story over a high basement and the rear addition is one-and-one-half-stories high, although both sections are about the same overall height.

The hipped roofs of the main block and the addition are clad in asphalt shingles. Deep overhanging bracketed wooden eaves wrap around the building on all sides, on both the main block and the addition. All facades are composed of red Flemish bond brick and stucco with Indiana limestone and cast stone trim.

The projecting center entrance section has a full wooden triangular pediment supported by tall stone Tuscan columns. The wooden modillioned cornice has a frieze with raised X's set in squares and an architrave containing the words "NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY." A flag pole is anchored at the center of the frieze. The tall arched entranceway is set in a limestone frame. The wooden doorway enframement has fluted pilasters supporting a flat pediment with a rectangular transom above non-historic double metal doors.

The arched window above the doorway is covered by a metal mesh grate. A recent (1996) metal plaque on the west side of the doorway reads "New York Public Library Port Richmond Branch."

The basement terminates in a curved, molded brick watertable on both the main block and the addition. The basement windows in the main block are rectangular with flat stone lintels and decorative metal grilles overlaid with non-historic mesh grilles.

On either side of the center doorway, the two first-story arched windows are set flush into a stucco frame which is keyed into the brick to form classically-inspired quoining. The spandrel below the projecting stone window sill is also stucco. Each window opening contains two replacement one-over-one aluminum double-hung windows with a fixed arched aluminum transom above. The windows are covered by non-historic metal grills. On the side facades of the main block, two windows are set into a stucco frame like that on the front facade.

A,

There were so many words for "A" I couldn't choose just one. So, there's absolutely amazing, artists, abundance and art. I am dealing with a small hang tag so I had to limit myself since it was, after all, my first one.
This one has rhinestones, silver charms, fiber, feathers (just love feathers for texture) wire, beads, fabric, ball chain, words, rubber stamp images, and ephemera.

Words

"I collect words. I keep them in a box in my mind. I'd like to keep them in a real box, something pretty, maybe a shoe box covered with flowered wrapping paper. Whenever I wanted, I'd open the box and pick up the papers, reading and feeling the words all at once. Then I could hide the box. But the words are safer in my mind. There, he can't take them."
Ten-year old Kaylee Wren doesn't speak. Not since her drug-addled mother walked away, leaving her in a remote cabin nestled in the towering redwoods-in the care of a man who is as dangerous as he is evil. With silence her only refuge, Kaylee collects words she might never speak from the only memento her mother left behind: a dictionary.
Sierra Dawn is thirty-four, an artist, and alone. She has allowed the shame of her past to silence her present hopes and chooses to bury her pain by trying to control her circumstances. But on the twelfth anniversary of her daughter's death, Sierra's control begins to crumble as the God of her childhood woos her back to Himself.
Brought together by Divine design, Kaylee and Sierra will discover together the healing mercy of the Word-Jesus Christ.

Acclaim for Words:

"First-time novelist Yttrup writes a riveting, emotionally charged story . . . page by page, word by word, this talented author proves the adage 'Write what you know.'"

Publishers Weekly

"Ginny takes us on a path from pain and struggle to joy and wholeness as her characters discover that the author of Truth is the way to freedom and healing. Sexual abuse may not be your story, but most certainly you will have someone in your life for whom this is a reality. Read it for them. Read it for yourself. And read it for those around the world who’ve yet to be set free."

Barbara Wilson, author of The Invisible Bond

"It's hard to believe this is Ginny L. Yttrup's debut novel. She beautifully and effectively weaves a story of trust, sacrifice, truth, new beginnings, freedom and unconditional love. Here are 334 pages of words that may very well leave you speechless."

FaithfulReader.com

"An astounding, debut novel. I haven't read anything this profound, inspiring and life changing since (Francine Rivers') Redeeming Love."

Finding Hope through Fiction

"Yttrup's journey of healing, redemption and faith is gorgeous, uplifting, difficult at times, but oh so beautiful and stunning . . . I loved this book."

Fiction Addict

"From start to finish Words had my heart and mind. I found myself thinking about the book when I needed to be sleeping. Author Ginny L.Yttrup has truly allowed the truth and the Truth to set her free."

Live, Learn, Love

"A captivating story with the message of hope and restoration . . . touch(ing) on a topic that makes me sick and boiling mad. Yttrup writes from the depth of her own life experiences and her stories will resonate with many women and provide hope for their pain."

Lettering & Type: Creating Letters and Designing Typefaces (Design Brief)

Lettering & Type: Creating Letters and Designing Typefaces (Design Brief)

No component of graphic design has attracted as much interest or inspired as much innovation in recent years as lettering and type. These fundamentals of design, once the exclusive domain of professional typographers, have become an essential starting point for anyone looking for a fresh way to communicate. Practical information about creating letters and type often amounts to a series of guidelines for executing a particular process, font program, or style. But what makes lettering and type endlessly fascinating is the flexibility to interpret and sometimes even break these rules. Lettering & Type is a smart-but- not-dense guide to creating and bending letters to one's will. More than just another pretty survey, it is a powerful how-to book full of relevant theory, history, explanatory diagrams, and exercises. While other type design books get hung up on the technical and technological issues of type design and lettering, Lettering & Type features the context and creativity that shape letters and make them interesting.

Authors and designers Bruce Willen and Nolen Strals examine classic design examples as well as exciting contemporary lettering of all stripes—from editorial illustrations to concert posters to radical conceptual alphabets. Lettering & Type is ideal for anyone looking to move beyond existing typography and fonts to create, explore, and use original or customized letterforms. This latest addition to our best-selling Design Briefs seriesfeatures a foreword by Ellen Lupton and hundreds of images and examples of work by historical and contemporary designers, artists, and illustrators, including Marian Bantjes, Stefan Sagmeister, Matthew Carter, Christoph Niemann, Steve Powers (ESPO), House Industries, Christian Schwartz, Margaret Kilgallen, James Victore, Abbott Miller, Sibylle Hagmann, Ed Fella, and many more. Throughout the book interviews with type designers, artists, and graphic designers provide real-world perspective from contemporary practitioners.

Staind

Staind marks the iconic hard rock band's seventh studio album and first full-length release in three years. Produced by Johnny K - known for his work with 3 Doors Down, Disturbed, and Sevendust, not to mention his Grammy Award-nominated collaboration with Staind, 2008's The Illusion of Progress - and mixed by the legendary Chris Lord-Alge, Staind stands as Staind's most intense and powerful work to date. The album is heralded by the viral "Eyes Wide Open" and official single "Not Again." Singer/songwriter/guitarist Aaron Lewis recently described Staind as "the heaviest thing we have recorded in a long time. It's definitely one of the heaviest collections of songs that we have put together." "It's completely different than the last record," agrees guitarist Mike Mushok. "It's more of a throwback to where we came from. I definitely think it's fresh. It's a modern-sounding version of a heavy Staind record. It's pretty cool."

Jefferson Hotel - Richmond, Virginia

Jefferson Hotel - Richmond, Virginia

Opened in 1895, the hotel symbolized a dream for the man who was, simultaneously, one of Richmond's most modest and most colorful citizens and also Richmond's wealthiest citizen. Lewis Ginter was born in New York of Dutch immigrant parents. He came to Richmond in 1842 at the age of eighteen and made a fortune in the import business before losing it to the Civil War. He served in the Confederate Army, and then returned to New York, where he made a second fortune in the banking industry and lost it to a recession.
At age fifty, Ginter returned to Richmond and entered the tobacco business. He made millions marketing the pre-rolled cigarette and became a civic leader and philanthropist. He then sold his interest in the tobacco company and entered his fourth career, land development.
A classic Jeffersonian, cultured, gifted and widely traveled (he crossed the Atlantic thirty times, and went around the world several times), Ginter was interested in the arts and architecture. He also had a strong, abiding love for his adopted city.
To create this dream, he commissioned Carrere and Hastings, a renowned architectural firm from New York. The firm designed the Fifth Avenue Public Library and Henry Frick House (later the Frick Museum) in New York, as well as portions of the Commonwealth Club in Richmond.
Ginter's wishes were followed and the hotel was built incorporating Renaissance and other forms of architecture that he admired, creating a composite, eclectic style popular at the turn of the century. When The Jefferson was elected in 1969 to the National Register of Historical Places, it was considered to be among the finest examples of Beaux Arts style in existence.
THE OPENING - HISTORIC VIRGINIA HOTELS TAKE SHAPE
It is estimated that between $5 and $10 million went into planning, building and furnishing the hotel, with nearly $2 million of this amount spent on construction. The planning and building process took nearly three years with Ginter supervising every detail. As a centerpiece for the upper lobby, The Palm Court, Ginter commissioned Richmond sculptor, Edward V. Valentine, to create a life-size image of Jefferson from Carrara marble. The statue cost $12,000 and took two years to complete. Valentine was able to borrow clothing actually worn by Jefferson, which he copied for the statue.
That was just the beginning. Ginter imported exotic palm trees from Central and South America and purchased hundreds of valuable antiques here and abroad. He saw to it that the hotel had billiard rooms, a library, ladies' salon, grill room, Turkish and Russian baths, plus every contemporary convenience: electric lights, electric elevators, hot and cold water in the bedrooms, and a Teleseme (predecessor of the telephone) for room service.
Major Ginter's dream was fulfilled on October 31, 1895. The Jefferson opened to an awed and delighted public and was enthusiastically proclaimed to be the finest hotel in the country. Despite heavy rain, thousands of people came through the doors, beginning at 7:00 am.
Within a week, the Jefferson had lodged its first distinguished guests. They were in Richmond for the wedding of Irene Langhorne, who had led cotillions in New York, Philadelphia, Richmond and New Orleans. An elegant party, held in the hotel's Roof Garden, was given by the noted New York architect, Stanford White of the firm of McKim, Mead, White, in honor of Miss Langhorne and her husband-to-be, Charles Dana Gibson. Gibson, an illustrator and satirist, created the Gibson Girl look at the turn-of-the-century. Irene's younger sister, Nancy, who was an attendant in the wedding, eventually married Waldorf Astor and became "Lady Astor", the first woman elected to the British parliament.
The hotel, which contained 308 guest rooms, as well as thirty-four rooms reserved for employees, soon became known as "The Belle of the '90's".
FIRE & RESTORATION
Unfortunately, the Major's enjoyment of his accomplishment was short-lived... he died less than two years later. In 1901 the hotel itself came close to being short-lived. A defective wire started a fire that demolished three-fifths of the building. There were no fatalities, however, there was a narrow escape for one famous occupant of the hotel, the statue of Thomas Jefferson.
A rescue crew, including the sculptor himself, was hurriedly summoned to help. The men pushed the statue onto strategically placed mattresses and carried it outside. Then they accidentally dropped it, and the head struck the ground and broke off. For a while, the headless statue stood in the front yard of a neighboring home. (The head was kept in the vault of Henry Valentine, a relative of the sculptor and a member of the rescue crew.) Eventually it was taken back to the sculptor’s studio, where repairs were made.
One hundred guest rooms fronting Franklin Street were intact and reopened in grand style in May 1902. Major reconstruction was required in the portion facing Main Street. T

Break the Cycle

Aussie edition of the alternative metal act's 2001 album. 14 tracks including one exclusive live bonus track, 'Outside' by vocalist Aaron Lewis & Limp Bixkit's Fred Durst.

Watch out, mom and dad. If you don't treat your kids right, they're gonna up and start an alt-metal band to share the angst you've brought on them with the world. After all, who needs therapy when you've got a million kids hearing your pain on MTV? Staind has never been a band to gloss over personal issues. They've given their albums names like Torment and Dysfunction, and their lyrics delve deep into singer Aaron Lewis' difficult past. Contrary to the title, Staind's third release, Break the Cycle, sticks with the tormented cycle, covering the same themes of heartbreak, self-doubt, and broken homes.
Lewis has almost three decades of personal material to mine, and as familiar as his issues are, Break the Cycle still feels like a new, honest look into difficulties that can hit people across the board. "Waste," a song written to a fan who committed suicide, is particularly poignant as it grabbles with Lewis's empathy and anger for a boy he's never met. "Outside" is another album standout. It's a slower, partially acoustic number that builds on its own emotion. The songs on Break the Cycle are drenched in melancholy melodies and slow, heavy riffs typical of the sensitive side of the alt-rock genre. Lewis sometimes breaks out into either a hearty yell or a throaty gurgle that sounds like the devil vomiting ("Can't Believe"), but the best songs keep his passion a little more controlled. You've probably heard rock like Break the Cycle piping from mainstream radio stations already, but Lewis's ability to turn his breakdowns into his art should capture a new round of fans happy to find kindred spirits in the band. --Jennifer Maerz

Bryant Park Studios

Bryant Park Studios

Midtown Manhattan

The Bryant Park Studios constructed in 1900-01, is one of the earliest buildings in New York specifically designed to house artists' studios. The building's location across from Bryant Park and its generous windows with northern exposures make it aptly suited for this purpose. Designed by the prominent architect Charles A. Rich, the elegant building displays a complex program of ornamentation in an elaborate French Beaux-Arts style. It was also known as the Beaux Arts Building and was commissioned by portraitist A. A. Anderson, an artist with French training and experience, who sought to address the shortage of appropriate artists' working spaces in the city.

Above the retail stores at the street level, prominent design features of the building include: rusticated terra cotta, terra-cotta and brick banding, dramatic, multi-story stone window enframements with pediments or delicate metal-railed balconies highlighting the studio windows which themselves are elegantly proportioned and divided, and prominent cornices. In addition to Anderson who had a triplex apartment-studio at the top of the building, numerous artists of note worked here, including Edward Steichen and Fernand Leger.

Artists' Studio Space in New York

In the rapidly expanding economy of New York City at the end of the nineteenth century, many people had difficulty finding sufficient space for their living or working requirements. The dramatically increasing population led some to move far northward, while others preferred to live close to the center of the city in small apartments. Artists, who had specific requirements for northern light and large working areas, were left to cope as best they could with the increasing shortage of space.

The first building specifically devoted to artists' studios was The Studio Building at 51-55 West Tenth Street (demolished), designed in 1857 by Richard Morris Hunt. A large building with expansive windows to capture the northern light, it had a huge, vaulted studio on the ground floor as well as other, individual studios above. Numerous well-known artists were tenants, including John LaFarge, Frederick Church, Winslow Homer, Augustus Saint-Gaudens and William Merritt Chase. Its immediate popularity attested to the need for this building type in New York, but no others existed at that time.

The Studio Building served as a Mecca for artists and became a focal point for artists' organizations such as the Artists' Fund Society which had its headquarters there, and the Tile Club which was located nearby. Those who could not rent space at the Studio Building, found other quarters nearby and Greenwich Village became New York's art center. The numerous skylights (to capture the most daylight possible) found on buildings throughout the Village attest to the presence of these art studios.

During the second half of the nineteenth century, the art community in New York grew, and their activities required more space for studios, meeting and exhibition rooms. This group, like other New Yorkers, moved uptown and dispersed. One developer, W. Jennings Demorest, made "a specialty of artists' studios in many of his buildings, among which are The Knickerbocker (cor. Fifth Avenue and 14th Street), The Manhattan (95 Fifth Avenue), [and] The Jennings (10 E. 14th Street)."

Other individuals created studios in any building where sufficient space and light could be obtained at an affordable price. During the last part of the nineteenth century, two buildings were specifically constructed uptown with space for artists' studios. These were the Sherwood Studios at 58 West 57th Street (demolished) and Carnegie Hall (built 1891; a designated New York City Landmark) , also on West 57th Street. When the American Fine Arts Society erected its building at 215 West 57th Street (a designated New York City Landmark) also in 1891, with rooms for meetings, exhibitions and classes, it was clear that the artistic community was moving northward.

History of the Bryant Park Area

The area known today as Bryant Park was well beyond the city limits when it was purchased in 1822 by New York City as a paupers' burial ground. In 1842, the Croton Reservoir was constructed on Fifth Avenue, between 40th and 42nd Streets because the area was so remote. Behind it, in 1853, rose the Crystal Palace, built for an international exhibition of that year. This structure burned to the ground in 18 58 and the site became known as Reservoir Square. In 1884, the name was changed to Bryant Park, after the poet William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878).

By this time New York had made considerable progress in its expansion northward and the area around the park was fully developed with mansions on Fifth Avenue and smaller individual houses on the side streets. Sixth Avenue, with its Elevated Railroad was a business center, retail by day and other, more lively trades by night. Storefronts lined the street, often with "French flats" abov

Caricature - 21/52

Each year since 1985, Roosevelt High School in Des Moines has held an all-night Senior Party for graduates following the commencement ceremony. The entire school is decorated by parents around a theme. This year it was "R World" with different parts of the school representing getting out into and around the world: there was an airport terminal, a French cafe, an Italian bistro, a Monte Carlo casino, etc. There is also food and activities throughout, everything from Salsa dance lessons to massage therapists to, in this case, a caricaturist.

I volunteered to take some photos throughout the event, many of which I had already posted including a version of this shot. But, looking back on what I had shot this week this was my favorite photo: pleased with the focus, the lighting and the happy subject.

One of 7 that I've finished. This year I decided to zip tie all the components together using small cable ties so they will be all ready for next year. Takes forever, but well worth the time savings for next year. This one will go on the front door, the rest have lights and will be attached to newel posts and banisters. Each one is about 33" long.

Hong Kong: Front Door/Back Door

This trip through one of the most densely populated areas of the world is also a journey through a strangely underpopulated place, inhabited only by the traces of city dwellers.
The dark back alleys that crisscross the city are home to objects that, at first glance, seem to be discarded—the random detritus of the man-made world. Under the scrutiny of Michael Wolf's photographic eye, these objects become fascinating installation pieces, while the abstract patterns of the buildings reveal the beauty and order that underlie the apparent chaos of the city. Thought-provoking texts by Kenneth Baker and Douglas Young explore the choices that people make of lifestyle, form, function, identity, and design, as well as the notion of Hong Kong as a brand. 75 color photographs

Arcada Theater- Saint Charles IL (2)

Arcada Theater- Saint Charles IL (2)

nrhp # 94000977- In 1837, Orange C. Baird, David Howard, and Dr. Nathan Collins built a hotel on the lot on where the Arcada Theatre now stands. Boarders could expect few luxuries in the spare building. One of the earliest boarders, Bela T. Hunt, bought the hotel and renovated it. Following construction of an addition and other improvements, Hunt reopened the hotel with a ball on July 4, 1838. Peter J. Burchell served as proprietor of the hotel for much of its existence. During the Mexican War and the Civil War, the hotel served as a recruiting headquarters. By 1889 the building's condition was quickly deteriorating: "The Old Burchell Hotel is like an old man tottering to its fall...it stands with a careening frame, deserted, fifty-three years after its construction." Later that year, the building was dismantled. The lot remained vacant until the construction of the Arcada Theatre.

St. Charles gained yet another of its landmark public buildings in the 1920s. In 1926, following much fanfare, the Arcada theater opened to the public. Lester Norris (1900-1981), built the Arcada in hopes of providing a place of entertainment and enjoyment for people of the area. Much like Colonel E.J. Baker, Norris invested his engergies and assets in the improvement of his hometown. Norris was a commericial artist and cartoonist for the Chicago Tribune. Designed by Elmer Berhns, the three story theater stands as a prime example of the Spanish Colonial Revival Style. While most of the exterior elements of the building remain, the original facade did not include the marquee that is seen today--that was added in 1943. The final cost of the building was approximately $500,000. On its opening night, September 6, 1926, visitors from all over northern Illinois first entered the building. Lavish decoration greeted the patrons. A fountain in the main foyer, nature scenes simulated by projecting rocks and waterfalls, and the combination of Spanish and Native American designs illustrated in the artwork and woodwork immersed patrons in luxury. Inside the 1,000 seat theater itself, a Marr and Colton organ accompanied the silent movies that flickered on the screen. The theater also boasted a grand stage. Patrons of the Arcada had several options: not only were they able to watch the latest movie, but they also were able to view a stage show. On opening night, two showings of a feature film "The Last Frontier", an Our Gang comedy, and a vaudeville show entertained guests. Norris also invited theater managers from Chicago to see the new theater. The Arcada Building also housed stores and businesses, a tea room, and a lodge room on the third floor. Over the years, these other rooms have served as places for receptions, lodge meetings, and social gatherings. Famous entertainers have appeared at the Arcada. John P. Sousa, George Burns and Gracie Allen, Edgar Bergen, and Jeannete MacDonald once stood upon the stage. In the 1950s, local play companies presented popular muscials such as Brigadoon and Carousel. The Arcada remained in the possession of the Norris family until the 1980s. From 1980 until 1992, Ruby Frank owned the theater. In the early 1990s, Classic Cinemas bought the Aracada and hoped to refurbish and revive the elements that had been lost to time. To do so, they had to uncover many of the ornamental elements which had been covered or painted over during the theater's lifetime. Today, one can watch a movie at the Arcada and step back into time. Although the theater may not be in its original conditon, it still gives one a sense of what once existed on opening day in 1926. While modern improvements, such as a new sound system were added, those restoring the Arcada also strove to recreate the decorative elements that reflect the original decor. Thanks to the restoration of the Arcada Theater and its architectural and entertainment importance, the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency placed the theater on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

Tecumseh Theater Balcony

Tecumseh Theater Balcony

The Tecumseh Theater is located on Shawnee, Ohio’s Historic Main Street. The district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its unique boom town architecture and important role in industrial and labor history. The three story structure was known as a “skyscraper” when it was built in 1907 by the Improved Order of Red Men, one of the many fraternal organizations that existed in the Little Cities of Black Diamonds Coal Region at the turn of the last century. Its early use of steel I-beam construction was rare in rural America. Its height made it Perry County’s tallest building, a distinction it holds to this day. It took two years to build the structure, utilizing iron, clay and brick from the nearby Rock Run brick plant.

The building sits on the site of the O’Bear Hotel, fashioned from the farm house that stood here before the town was founded. The hotel hosted such prestigious guests as William McKinley and William Jennings Bryan as they courted the vote of miners in the 1896 presidential election. The building’s main theater spans the middle two floors of the four story building. It was called the Indian Theater. Complete with a professional sized stage and balcony seating, its unique flat floor that never contained fixed seating made it a multi-purpose building. The relatively new game of basketball was the first event held in the space with baskets mounted on the balcony and the edge of the stage. Barnstorming teams from the east were known to have visited the theater to play local teams. Vaudeville shows, plays, musical concerts, boxing matches and high school graduations were also common occurrences in the theater during the early days. During the 1930’s and 40’s the theater became a popular place for dancing as big band and swing music became the rage.

The flat floor was also popular as a skating rink in the 1950s.

The two storefronts on the first floor of the building provided income for the building’s owners during the early years. Among the tenants were a ten pin bowling alley and a barbershop. Dressing rooms were located in the rear of the first floor and reached the theater stage above by a stairwell. A cistern located under the first floor not only provided water to the building, but also was vented to the stage to provide cool air during the summer months.

The top story of the building was built as the headquarters for the Red Men’s Lodge, complete with small office rooms and a large ball room where the organization’s meetings and ceremonies were held. Unfortunately, the organization only stayed in the building until 1912 when they went bankrupt from debt incurred building the structure.

The building was purchased by area businessman, Mr. David Lewis who converted the left hand storefront into a silent movie theater called the Linda Theater in the early 1920’s. He eventually sold it to Mr. Louis Hatem. During the early 1930’s Mr. Hatem remodeled the theater with elegant seating and decor and installed the first talking movie projectors in the Hocking Valley, bringing movie patrons from all over the region to the town. He converted the right hand storefront into an elegant lounge and confectionery for his movie operation, and named it the “New Linda Theater.” The first floor dressing rooms became an apartment for his family as stage shows in the Main Theater were fading from the entertainment scene. Mr. Hatem successfully operated the movie theater here until 1959. Several generations of Shawnee citizens have fond memories of attending the movies at this location.

After the movie theater closed in the late 1950’s the Hatem family vacated the building, with Mr. Hatem using the Main Theater for storage. A fire in the building adjacent to the Red Men’s Hall in the 1960’s severely damaged the theater roof. Unrepaired, water began to pour through the structure causing excessive damage to the building’s floors and plaster walls.

21 West Street Building

21 West Street Building

Financial District, Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States

The thirty-one story, brick Art Deco office building at 21 West Street was constructed in 1929-31 to the designs of the prolific architectural firm of Starrett & Van Vleck. With its bold, set-back profile, and finely detailed brickwork suggestive of woven fabric, this building epitomizes the skyscrapers built in New York during the "Jazz Age," when architects and their clients were searching for ways to represent this period which was seen as more fast-paced, mechanized, and altogether different from what had come before. The architects used brick for its varied color and textural interest, derived the massing from the recent zoning laws, and used space in new ways, incorporating a recessed street-level shopping arcade and corner windows. The architectural firm of Starrett & Van Vleck which had designed numerous buildings, including offices, schools, and stores were experienced practitioners of this type of design.

DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS

History of the Area

The southernmost tip of Manhattan is the oldest inhabited part of the island. It was so densely built up that early in the city's history, the areas adjacent to the shore began to be filled in to create more useable land. The entire block of West Street, from Battery Place to Morris Street is built upon landfill in the Hudson River; its creation occured in the early years of the nineteenth century, in accordance with the terms of certain water grants made by the city. The earliest occupants of this area purchased standard 25-foot lots and constructed individual houses on them. Over the course of the nineteenth century, the city's increasing population, changes in fashion, as well as changes in types of businesses and their needs meant that residences relocated further uptown, leaving lower Manhattan primarily for business use. Beginning in the early twentieth century, ownership on the block began to change from individuals to realty and warehouse companies. These new owners tended to buy numerous small lots and assemble larger parcels to accommodate new, larger industrial and office buildings. In 1929, the land on which 21 West Street is located, then occupied by various low, early nineteenth-century buildings, changed hands several times among a series of real estate concerns until it was purchased by the 21 West Street Corporation which erected this office building for investment purposes.

The period from 1925 to 1931 was a period of tremendous building and growth in New York City. During 1925, fifteen new office skyscrapers were erected, and during 1926, thirty more towers were built. The years 1929-1930 were the peak years for the construction of office buildings in the Art Deco style despite the crash of the Stock Market, as those which had been previously planned and financed went forward. Large skyscrapers of those years included the Empire State Building (1929-31, 350 Fifth Avenue, a designated New York City Landmark), the Chrysler Building (1928-30, 405 Lexington Avenue, a designated New York City Landmark), and the Daily News Building (1929-30, 220 East 42nd Street, a designated New York City Landmark) in midtown, and the Manhattan Company Building (1929-30, 40 Wall Street, a designated New York City Landmark), the City Bank-Farmers Trust Company Building (1930-31, 20 Exchange Place, a designated New York City Landmark) and the Irving Trust Building (1929-32,

1 Wall Street) downtown. Infra-structure improvements in various parts of the city served as spurs to new development, such as the demolition of the Second Avenue Elevated which paved the way for Tudor City on the east side, and the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel in lower Manhattan which made travel between Manhattan and Brooklyn easier, while eliminating much east-west traffic in lower Manhattan, near the site of this West Street building.

Art Deco Style

The Art Deco or Modernistic style of architecture which primarily appeared in this country from the mid-1920s through the 1930s, has been called an “avant-garde traditionalist” approach to creating a contemporary idiom for buildings of the period. As in other self-conscious modern periods, designers and critics of this time expressed the need for a new style which could be deemed appropriate for the period dubbed the "Jazz Age," and all its accompanying technological developments. Much of the architecture that we know as Art Deco however, was based on accepted, standard forms and construction techniques, which were given a modern cast through the use of a characteristic ornament, and a variety of materials, some new and some simply used in a new way. Most of the architects active in this style had received traditional Beaux-Arts training in which the plan and the design of elevations were the first and most important steps in the design of a building. To these initial steps were added design and ornamental i

Former Suffolk Title and Guarantee Company Building

Former Suffolk Title and Guarantee Company Building

Constructed in 1929, the (Former) Suffolk Title and Guarantee Company Building maintains a commanding presence near the business center of Jamaica, Queens. Designed by the distinguished architectural firm of Dennison & Hirons which was known for its bank buildings, this eight-story structure was built at a time of tremendous business prosperity and building activity.

The architects used the Art Deco style enhanced with colorful terracotta ornament to create a modern and distinctive headquarters for the Long Island-based firm, which was organized in 1925 to insure real estate titles, guarantee mortgages, and make loans. Echoing the dominant shapes of the prominent Art Deco skyscrapers of the period in this smaller building, the architects emphasized the verticality of the structure with continuous masonry piers and a variety of setbacks near the top.

This arrangement, along with the brightly-colored, terra-cotta panels by noted sculptor Rene Chambellan that are strategically applied to the crown and the second story, make this a truly unique building in downtown Jamaica, and a rare example of the skyscraper style applied to small buildings outside of Manhattan.

Development of the Area

Jamaica, one of the oldest settlements within the current boundaries of New York City, developed into the leading commercial center of Queens County by 1900 and continues to be the largest and most densely-populated neighborhood in central Queens. The Dutch purchased the land in Jamaica from the Jameco Indians in 1655. The following year, Governor Peter Stuyvesant granted a charter to the town, originally known as Rusdorp.

Following the transfer of power from the Dutch to the English in 1664, Rusdorp was renamed Jamaica, after the original inhabitants of the region. Queens County (incorporating present-day Queens and Nassau Counties) was chartered in 1683 and Jamaica was one of the three original governing units established there (along with Newtown and Flushing). Outside the town center, Jamaica was largely an area of farms and pastures. The rural village was officially incorporated by New York State in 1814.

Jamaica's central location in Queens County, and the extensive transportation network that developed in the town during the nineteenth century, transformed the village into the major commercial center for Queens County and much of eastern Long Island. The arrival of the railroads in the 1830s began this evolution.

The rail lines connected Jamaica with other sections of Queens county, Brooklyn, eastern Long Island, and the ferries to New York City. Jamaica's farmland was soon being subdivided into streets and building lots, and many houses were erected.

By the turn of the century, Jamaica' s importance as a commercial area became evident in the impressive buildings constructed on Jamaica Avenue, most notably the Beaux-Arts Jamaica Savings Bank Building (161-02 Jamaica Avenue, 1897-98, Hough & Duell), and the neo-ltalian Renaissance Queens County Register Office (161-04 Jamaica Avenue, 1898, A.S. Macgregor, a designated New York City Landmark).

After Jamaica was incorporated into the Borough of Queens and became a part of New York City on January 1, 1898, additional transportation improvements brought increasing numbers of people. As a result, the population of Jamaica quadrupled between 1900 and 1920.

During the 1920s, when the major mass transit links were in place and private automobile ownership was growing at an extraordinary rate, Jamaica experienced its major expansion as a commercial center. By 1925, lots on Jamaica Avenue between 160111 Street and 168th Street had the highest assessed valuation in Queens County.

Many small-scale commercial buildings were erected in Jamaica at this time, as well as several major office and commercial structures, including the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce Building on 161st Street (1928-29, George W. Conable) and the J. Kurtz & Sons Store on Jamaica Avenue (1931, AUmendiger & Schlendorf, a designated New York City Landmark). When the Suffolk Title and Guarantee Company chose Jamaica for its new headquarters building in 1929, this was the most prosperous commercial section of the borough. It was also a center for banking and insurance in Queens, with several other banks and title guarantee companies located on the same block.

Suffolk Title and Guarantee Company

The Suffolk Title and Guarantee Company was founded in 1925 for the purpose of insuring property titles, making loans on bonds and mortgages, and selling guaranteed mortgages. The company, with businessman Willard Baylis as president, was organized in Suffolk County, but had offices in Manhattan, Long Island City, Mineola, and Riverhead, as well as Jamaica, Queens.

Its slogan was "A Title Company that Knows Long Island." Established during the period of intense business activity of the nineteen-twenties, the company expanded rapidly, and by 1927 had acquired another well-known title co

Theme Club: Beach Party and Florian’s Bday Party @ Koi, Fri 05.03.2010

There was a time when we feared the 3 at the beginning of our age more
than tipping a toe into Chao Praya River. But of course when we get
close to that age we relativise and we make out our new fear... mine
now is 40 ; )

I would like to invite you to my 30th Birthday Party next week Friday
at Koi which will also be the first Theme Club Party this year. We
have changed our monthly events to occasional but special ones. This
one will be a Beach Party with real sand, fire shows, live drummers
and of course Vladi and me as DJ’s.

The Theme is BEACHWEAR and we don’t necessarily mean speedos and
bikinis... maybe something you would wear in the evening at the beach.
Unless of course you want to... feel free ; )

Entrance will (of course) be FREE all night!

Music will come from Koi's resident DJ Vladi and our Theme Club
resident DJ Florian de Lux. Be prepared for some really groovy house
tunes from Vladi (great DJ!!) and Florian will dish out some house
classics (stuff that everyone knows) from over the last years, some of
the latest from the dancefloors all around the world and here and
there something cool from the 80s (Ain’t nobody... anyone?) just to
keep everybody shaking.

Then we'll have some special drink prices (not limited - all night!):

- Draft beer: 120 Baht

- Beer by bottle: Singha, San Miguel 150 Baht

- Red and white wine: 180 Baht

- Spirit with mixer: Chivas, Beefeater, Havanna Rum, Absolut Vodka,
Omega Tequila: 180 Baht

Plus we’ll have some free Tapas and Champagne... of course!!

And that all at the beautiful Koi. Whoever has been there will agree
that Koi is one of the most beautiful bars in Bangkok!

...aaand it will look even better with the full BEACH decor.

Koi is easy to find: come from Sukhumvit into Soi 20 and it's on the
right after 200 meters or from Rama 4 (over Sukhumvit Soi 24). BTS

Royal Exhibition Building, Carlton, VIC, Australia

Royal Exhibition Building, Carlton, VIC, Australia

"Statement of Significance

The Royal Exhibition Buildings and Carlton Gardens were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 1 July 2004

The site was inscribed under Criterion (ii) of the Operational Guidelines for the UNESCO World Heritage Convention (1972) as follows:

The Royal Exhibition Building and the surrounding Carlton Gardens, as the main extant survivors of a Palace of Industry and its setting, together reflect the global influence of the international exhibition movement of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The movement showcased technological innovation and change, which helped promote a rapid increase in industrialisation and international trade through the exchange of knowledge and ideas.

Statement of Significance to the State of Victoria

What is significant?

The Royal Exhibition Building was constructed in 1879-1880 to house the International Exhibition of 1880. It is the only major extant nineteenth century exhibition building in Australia and one of only a handful remaining world wide. It is set within the Carlton Gardens one of Melbourne's finest public parks. The design by noted architect Joseph Reed was awarded first prize of ?300 in an architectural competition. The successful tenderer was David Mitchell at a price of ?70,257. Governor Sir George Bowen laid the foundation stone on 19 February 1879 and the main building was ready for the opening of the International Exhibition on 1 October 1880. Temporary annexes to house some of the exhibition were demolished after the exhibition closed on 30 April 1881. The subsequent 1888 Centennial International Exhibition was one of the largest events staged in Victoria's history. By the turn of the twentieth century the buildings and environs had become a combination of concert hall, museum, art gallery, aquarium and sports ground. The Royal Exhibition Building played an important role in Federation. On the 9 May 1901 the Duke of York presided over the opening of the first Federal Parliament, and from 1901 to 1927 the western annexe was used as a temporary State Parliament while the new Federal Parliament occupied the Victorian Houses of Parliament. In 1919 the buildings became an emergency hospital for influenza epidemic victims and during the Second World War were used mainly by the RAAF. From 1948 to 1961 part of the complex was used as a migrant reception centre. The Royal Exhibition Building was still widely used in the post-war era for popular exhibitions such as the Home Show. The building is cruciform in plan with the nave known as the Great Hall on the main east-west axis. The main dome is 60 metres high and sits over the crossing of the nave and transepts. The southern transept, which contains a 13 metre wide semi-circular fanlight and is flanked by two towers, forms the main entrance. The decorative scheme by John Anderson for the opening of Federal Parliament saw the dome was decorated in imitation of the sky and the pendentives adorned with murals. An unusual and interesting aspect was the decorated exposed roof trusses throughout the building. The decorative scheme, hidden under layers of paint, was recovered and restored in a major renovation in the 1990s. In 2001 the Royal Exhibition Building hosted centenary celebrations of the opening of the first Federal Parliament. On 1 July 2004 the Royal Exhibition Building was inscribed on the World Heritage List.

Superintendent Charles La Trobe first planned the 26 hectare site of the Carlton Gardens in 1839 as part of the green belt encircling Melbourne which included Batman Hill, Flagstaff Gardens, Fitzroy Gardens, Treasury Gardens and the Domain. The original layout of the gardens was by Edward La Trobe Bateman and dates to 1856. Further redesign and planting took place under the direction of the State's leading landscape designers and horticulturists, including Clement Hodgkinson, William Sangster, Nicholas Bickford, John Guilfoyle and architect Joseph Reed. Reed and Sangster, who was also a nurseryman, worked in conjunction to ensure a suitable setting for the building, planning gardens, paths, entrances and other features. As well as the Royal Exhibition Building and the 1891 Curator's Lodge, first lived in by John Guilfoyle, the gardens contain three important fountains: the Hochgurtel Fountain, designed for the 1880 Exhibition by Joseph Hochgurtel; the French Fountain; and the Westgarth Drinking Fountain. The original perimeter fence was removed in about 1928 leaving only a small remnant and all of the bluestone plinth. The Melbourne Museum, designed by architects Denton Corker Marshall and constructed in the gardens immediately to the north of the Royal Exhibition Building, opened in 2000.

How is it significant?

The Royal Exhibition Buildings and Carlton Gardens are of historical, architectural, aesthetic, social and scientific (botanical) significance to the State of Victoria.

McFarlane-Bredt House

McFarlane-Bredt House

Rosebank, Staten Island

The house at 30 Hylan Boulevard, known as the McFarlane-Bredt house, is an early Victorian country villa built in the early 1840s. Its site, a broad elliptical mound on Staten Island's north shore, faces northeast and commands a magnificent view across the Narrows to New York harbor.

Built as private residence, it served for three years (1868-1871) as the clubhouse of the New York Yacht Club and became the second home of that organization. While headquartered in Clifton, the club first successfully defended the America's Cup , the world's foremost yachting event.

The house built for Henry and Anne McFarlane, shortly after they purchased the property in 1841, was a long, low, two-story, clapboard-covered, wooden-framed cottage with brick-filled walls designed to resemble an Italian-Swiss villa, a short lived style which rose to popularity in the 1840s along with the diminutive Greek temple and the board-and-batten Gothic cottage in an era when awakening literary tastes decreed that domestic architecture should be "romantic." If an architect designed the house for the McFarlanes, he remains unknown. McFarlane himself was an early developer of Staten Island. Clifton, the location of the house, was one of Staten Island's early romantic suburbs.

A map dated January 1846, shows the McFarlane house as originally built with a wide two-story central bay fronted by a broad veranda, facing the Narrows.*** Also shown are an ice-house, a gardener's cottage, stables, two greenhouses, and a fish pond. The greenhouses are drawn as directly abutting the line of the neighboring property which had been bought, in 1844, by John H. Austen, a New York City auctioneer.

In 1846, the McFarlanes sold the land (2.7 acres) and the dwelling to Daniel Low for $9,000. In 1847, Low sold to Richard Williamson, and three years later, in 1850, Williamson sold to Henry Dibblee, of Southfield. Dibblee, a dry-goods merchant, occupied the house until 1865 when he sold it to Almira Wolfe (Mrs. Nathaniel) for $25,000.

The $25,000 purchase price which Mrs. Wolfe paid to Henry Dibblee in 1865 was a huge sum for that time and an indication that the property was well improved and in excellent order. Since Dibblee lived there for fifteen years, it may be assumed that he did a number of things which added to the value of the place. He may have done a considerable amount of landscaping, and he must have been responsible for the first addition to the west end of the house which nearly doubled its size. This section featured another projecting room-end and an extension of the veranda. Great care was taken to copy exactly all of the original detailing so that the house appeared to have been built all at one time.

In post-Civil War years, the character of yachting changed greatly and immensely rich men who owned large steam-yachts became members of the club. They did not have such an intense interest in sarHring and their ships were manned by full-time paid crews. They stepped up the social life of the club and wanted a more elegant establishment — after all, the Royal Yacht Squadron was housed in a former royal castle at Cowes. It was also onerous to have to go to Staten Island and back just for a party.

The clubhouse at Clifton was found to be inadequate for large gatherings and in 1871 it was sold to Frederick Bredt, merchant, for $16,000.^ Because Bredt was the first owner after the New York Yacht Club, his name has been historically associated with the house. Meanwhile, the New York Yacht Club occupied a huge casino-type structure located directly on the waterfront at Stapleton which it maintained as a shore station until 1878.

In 1872, the New York Yacht Club moved to Manhattan where they took up quarters in the Leonard Jerome mansion at Union Square and 26th Street, sharing the building with the Jockey Club.12 This arrangement lasted until 1884 when the Yacht Club moved to a house which they bought at 67 Madison Avenue. The final move occurred in 1901 when the New York Yacht club first occupied its present home at 37 West 44th Street. This handsome limestone Beaux-Arts building with a most remarkable facade which exhibits carved-stone waves, shells, seaweed, dolphins, and the stern-ends of three baroque sailing vessels, was designed by the architects Warren & Wetmore and was designated a New York City Landmark on September 11,-.1979.

Later Owners and Changes

The former New York Yacht Club building at Clifton has had two more additions since it was sold in 1871. It is not likely that Frederick Bredt enlarged the house since he held it for only three years, selling the place to George D. Ives in 1874. Bredt had a mansion named Beechwood on a very large comer lot across Pennsylvania Avenue (the former name of Hylan Boulevard) and he probably never lived in the villa. However, Ives owned the house for a lengthy period, and the style of the wing added to the east could indicate a date in the 1870s. This wi

William J. Syms Operating Theater

William J. Syms Operating Theater

Upper West Side, Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States

The William J. Syms Operating Theater, built 1890-1892, was the most advanced operating theater in the world when it opened and one of the first equipped for aseptic surgery. The result of a collaboration of the architect William Wheeler Smith and the prominent American surgeon Charles McBurney, the building represented the attempt in the 19th century to reconcile architecture with technological advances.

The appearance of the building, subtle and simple in detail but striking in its massing, especially in the form of its semi-conical roof, is expressive of the unusual functional demands of the building, an effort to harmonize the design with the other Roosevelt Hospital buildings, and the well-developed personal style of the architect for medical buildings.

Syms was the fourth of several major pavilions (see below) built as part of the pavilion plan 'of Roosevelt Hospital begun in 18 69, and as such is both part of one of the earliest pavilion plan hospitals in America, and a rare early survivor of a once highly influential approach to hospital design. Syms was the center of medical education in New York City in its early years, and it was the site of numerous advances in surgical practice at a time when modern surgery was taking shape.

Roosevelt Hospital

The Syms Operating Theater was one of a series of pavilions built according to the original pavilion plan of Roosevelt Hospital. The pavilion plan was an important early step, proposed by the French Academy of Sciences in 1788 but not executed until much later, in applying scientific knowledge to the design of hospitals. At first it called for small parallel two-story buildings, called pavilions, set in a symmetrical plan oriented for access to light and air.

Disease and infections were believed to be carried in vapors, odors, dirt, and other "miasms" which were dispelled by light and goo d ventilation. Later, improved lighting and mechanical ventilation systems led to the acceptance of larger pavilion buildings. Syms' location, siting, massing, and exterior detail as well as its institutional history all relate to the original plan for Roosevelt Hospital and to the architecture of its early buildings.

Roosevelt Hospital was established by the bequest of James Henry Roosevelt (1800-1863) who left about $1,000,000 to build a hospital "for the reception and relief of sick and diseased persons."2 Roosevelt Hospital occupies the full block bounded by 58th and 59th Streets and Ninth and Tenth Avenues. Although the land was part of the 1811 Commissioners Plan of Streets, 59th Street was only opened in 1851, and in 1866 when Roosevelt Hospital bought its site the area was still mostly scattered houses and small farms. The trustees of the hospital adopted the pavilion plan in 1866. This was among the earliest in the United States and, as far as is known, the first in New York City.

Although no early plan of the hospital survives, the original intention was to build a series of four parallel pavilions. In the first building campaign (1869-72), the prominent New York architect, Carl Pfeiffer, designed all the major buildings, three pavilions along 59th Street. They were built in the High Victorian Gothic Style with red brick walls and light colored "Ohio Stone" trim, and had lively roof lines. The one-story Surgical Pavilion next to the future site of the Syms Operating Theater was the smallest and most simply detailed of the group. The pavilion plan was largely adhered to in several expansions of the hospital, including a group of buildings designed by W. Wheeler Smith in the 1880s and 1890s, until about 1940.

Surgery, Medical Education, and Operating Theaters

In the 19th century, surgery developed from a remedy of last resort to a common medical procedure, in part due to the introduction of anesthesia in 1847 and to the development of two theories of modern surgery, antiseptic surgery developed by Joseph Lister in 1867, followed by aseptic surgery about 1890. The operating theater was developed in the early 19th century on the model of anatomical theaters which had been the center of medical training since the Renaissance.

In the 1870s, many new operating theaters, including the first one at Roosevelt Hospital, were built for the rapidly growing population of student surgeons. Usually incorporated in larger hospital buildings but occasionally occupying their own pavilions, these were well-ventilated wood rooms, often decorated, amply lit by large windows and gas lamps, which accommodated up to 3 00 observers. The best-known operating theater of this generation was at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, built between 1877 and 1885.

These were superseded by a new generation of operating theaters about 189 0 for aseptic surgery, among the very first of which were the McLane Operating Room^ (now demolished), designed in 18 9 0 by W. Wheeler Smith at Rooseve

Why does the Men's room have a lounge and not the Ladies room????
STATE THEATRE - PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE
The State Theatre was hailed as "the largest, finest and most beautiful playhouse in Western Pennsylvania," upon its opening in the fall of 1922. With many accolades it became a "picture place," showing silent movies and presenting vaudeville's finest acts from the B.F. Keith Circuit.

Thomas Lamb, a nationally known theater architect, designed the State. He is best known for his work in the 18th century Robert Adam's style of architecture and for his fine acoustical planning. The Ingstrip-Burke Company of Chicago, Art Designers, decorated the interior of the Moderne structure in the Adam's style. The theme was that of "refinement of line and chasteness of ornamentation." The artist in charge, Michael Tomlin, educated at the School of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia, pronounced himself well-satisfied: "It is better than I hoped, it is what I dreamed."

The State Symphony Orchestra held forth in the pit with a $40,000.00 Pleubet Master Organ at the left front of the main floor - accompanying the silent films to fit the mood. As the Big Band sound emerged, the State hosted some of the country's greatest musical attractions including Paul Whitman, Glen Gray and the Dorsey Brothers.

The popularity of "talkies" signaled the end for in-house musicians and the end of vaudeville. Although the greatest names in Hollywood flickered across the screen and epics such as Gone With the Wind drew packed audiences, the State's days as a movie palace were numbered. Television took away a sizable audience and the movie theatre trend turned to multiple screens and smaller auditoriums: The State Theatre closed in June 1973.

After a number of years the theatre reopened as The State Music Hall, featuring county and western music legends like Johnny Cash, Slim Whitman, Waylon Jennings and The Statler Brothers. Though popular for a time, the State Music Hall concept did not work out and the theatre closed again.

In 1988, The Greater Uniontown Heritage Consortium purchased the theatre, restored its old name and began presenting aseries of professional programs ranging from Broadway musicals to big bands, symphonies to country music superstars. The State Theatre offers a children's series of shows and provides educational programming for school groups. A multi-million dollar restoration project is currently underway to restore the "Grand Old Lady of Main Street" to her original splendor.
