The Prison Planet that we are all serving time on. The Prison Planet where our only hope is the East Coast Avengers. Esoteric (of 7L & Esoteric, The Army of the Pharoahs), trademarc and DC the Midi Alien combine as the East Coast Avengers, a trio of hip hop rebels who have answered the call and take aim at Bill O'Reilly and the religious right. Let no evildoing pundit, talk show host or politician be safe in America any longer.

Sri Lankan tsunami

As of 16:35 GST 3 January 2005, Sri Lankan authorities report 30,196 confirmed deaths after the island was hit by the tsunami resulting from the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake on December 26, 2004. Many of the dead were adults and the elderly. The south and east coasts were worst hit. One and a half million people have been displaced from their homes. The death toll continues to rise as the threat of infectious diseases breaking out has turned into a fact, with doctors confirming first cases of cholera.
About 1,200 dead were counted at Batticaloa in the east. At Trincomalee in the northeast, where the tsunami reached more than 2 km (1.25 mi) inland, 800 were reported dead. In neighbouring Ampara district alone, more than 5,000 dead. The naval base at Trincomalee is reported to be submerged. About 1000 more dead were counted in Mullaitivu and Vadamaradchi East . A holiday train, the "Queen of the Sea", was struck by the tsunami near the village of Telwatta as it travelled between Colombo and Galle carrying at least 1,700 passengers, killing all but a handful on board.
The agricultural sector has been affected seriously. 259 km? of paddy land has been destroyed in the northern, eastern, southern and western coastal belt. In addition, the extensive salinization of paddy lands has rendered them unsuitable for paddy cultivation. Rubbish has also been deposited on paddy lands. A large number of agricultural vehicles and equipment have been destroyed and canals and drains have been blocked. Underground sources of water have also been salinated.
Across the island collections are being taken for those who have lost everything, vans with PA systems driving around calling on people to give whatever they can. Even in the poorest, most remote areas people flock to the roadside to hand over money, clothes, bottles of water and bags of rice and lentils.
Apart from homes, many hotels as well as shops were reported to have been damaged. Hotels along the south coast were full of both foreign tourists and Sri Lankans making use of the long Christmas weekend. Twenty thousand soldiers were deployed in government-controlled areas to assist in relief operations and maintain law and order after sporadic looting. Curfews had been imposed in some areas to curb looting. Chinese light antipersonnel mines of type T-72A, left after the two-decade civil war, are feared to have been washed up and spread by the surge of water. The Norwegian Peoples' Aid Organization is currently assembling a team of mine sweepers to assess the situation.
It has been noted that in the Yala National Park, many animals seem to have moved to higher regions in order to escape the disaster. It is unclear how they detected the coming disaster, although a sixth sense, perhaps the ability to hear the infrasound rumble of the tremors or approaching tsunami, was mentioned in reports. Another possible reason is that many animals can run faster than people, enabling them to outrun the tsunami.
The test match ground at Galle, where international cricket is played, has been devastated.
The main highway in the south of Sri Lanka runs along the coast and was closed in the aftermath of the tsunami, delaying relief supplies. A huge initial effort to deliver supplies was made by large numbers of private individuals filling their own vans and pickup trucks with food, clothing and bottled water and driving to affected areas.
In Sri Lanka the first reports of measles and diarrhoea reached authorities, renewing fears of a deadly epidemic. However, relief operations based in the capital Colombo are well underway.
On the morning of Thursday 30 December, more people were injured when people fled tsunami affected areas, after the Indian government erroneously warned of another possible tsunami.
The science fiction author and scuba diver Sir Arthur C Clarke, who lived in Colombo, issued a statement saying that Sri Lanka lacks the resources and capacity to cope with the aftermath. Clarke reported that his family and staff were safe, even though some are badly shaken and relate harrowing first hand accounts of what happened and that his diving school (Arthur C. Clarke Diving School) Underwater Safaris at Hikkaduwa had been destroyed.
Sri Lanka's most popular sport is cricket, and the Australian, Bangladeshi, English and South African cricket teams have already announced that they are making donations to the humanitarian effort in Sri Lanka and other Asian countries. The Indian cricket team has pledged funds to the humanitarian effort in southern India. The cricketing world has already announced that two one-day matches will be played to raise further funds.
International assistance
Indian navy medical team arrived in Colombo within hours of the tsunami. Eventually India deployed 14 ships, nearly 1,000 military personnel and several dozen helicopters and airplanes to its devastated island neighbor to help with relief efforts.

Boxing

Another thing the trainer works on is speed and stance, also both very important in the ring.

All of the movies I have seen with boxing or martial arts in them set me up. I went into this assignment with preconceptions about how it would work. While most of my preconceptions proved true (sweat and sparring) the use of hand-pads and what they did with them was completely different from what I had imagined - thumping the hell out of them and no talking what so ever.

I was impressed at the grace and elegance of both the trainer and trainee with this innocuous training equipment.

The trainee didn't go mad, thumping the hell out of the pads but was lead by the trainer telling them which one to hit, how many times and the trainer frequently corrected the stance and the way the trainee moved their arms, their head or even their hips.

It was like watching a great ballet.

The last 'round' as it were usually resulted in a bit of thumping of the pads and the trainer tested the trainee on how many times and how fast they could hit the moving pad with one arm before they lost their stance/balance. Unlike you may think, they didn't have a temper tantrum, throw their gloves down and storm off when they tripped, it ended in laughter and a hug.

From the early 50's until a fire in the 80's this was the site of Goldstar Studios, then the center of rock music recording on the West Coast. Located on Santa Monica Boulevard near Vine Street (about a mile south of Hollywood & Vine), it is near Paramount Studios (incorporating the former RKO/Desilu Studios) and the Hollywood Forever Cemetary where numerous famous stars are buried.

As one of the first independent recording studios it was not constrained by the "old line" policies of the majors and developed its own unique commercially succesful sound. Using custom-built recording equipment and its "best ever" echo chamber, it was home to Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound", an unmatched "house band", and source of hundreds of hit records.

Because, after being out late Friday night at the TechBytes Geek Gathering, I got up early, did a load of laundry and scooted over to the Joe McNally seminar. There, I tried to absorb 20+ years worth of information in about 6.5 hours, then went right to church. From church, I went to dinner, then to work to reboot a server then home to do another load of laundry. So, I'm a little tired.

Anyway, this is a list of new flash equipment that I NEED to have. It's actually less expensive than what I thought I'd decided I was going to need, though I expect that to grow in Sunday's class.

San Diego Maritime Museum - USS Dolphin - The deepest diving submarine in the world, Dolphin is responsible for many "firsts", but is not primarily associated with any specific historic event or time frame during her nearly forty years of service. Rather, it is her unique, extreme deep-diving capability that sets her apart and has continually placed the vessel at the forefront of undersea naval research during her entire career. In November 1968, she set a depth record for operating submarines that still stands. In August 1969, she launched a torpedo from the deepest depth that one has ever been fired. Built in 1988 and still in regular use 22 years later.

Don't be fooled by the "milliamp" graduations - for absolute measurements when necessary, the unit is used with an external calibration chart which converts the mA readings into watts. The meter movements required 100uA for FSD.

This unit is a variation of a design published in the well-known book "Solid State Design for the Radio Amateur".

The meters were redundant spare parts for a 1940s era broadcast HF transmitter. They were still unused in their respective cardboard cartons.

I figured I would find a fitting use for them, and this is it.

The diecast box was reclaimed from another project, and the paint job is automotive paint (primer+topcoat) with a coat of protective varnish.

Starfish In Leo Carillo State Beach

I slightly tilted the ND .6 filter to hold back the horizon's brightness and some of the reflections on the water, and held my sweater above and front of the lens (without getting into the camera's view) to control some of the light hitting the lens surface and thus minimize reflections. I then set my off-camera flash (slightly to the right and bottom facing the starfish) to the lowest power setting to illuminate the starfish and its surroundings. I took two metered measurements - along the brightest part of the horizon and on the shadowed surfaces of the rocks in front of me - and set my camera to the middle value or difference between the two f-stops. Shooting directly into the sunlight is always very tricky, and sometimes people stare because you look like a fool contorting your body and gear into position to get the best results.

I could not complain at all about the images I'm getting from the Tokina 12-24mm f/4 DX II. I was afraid that its resolving power would not be up to par with the resolution of the D7000, but so far it has performed very well for me - sharpness, detail and contrast are all there, and distortion is well-controlled. I've read in one popular online forum where people are fighting and losing their tempers over whether the Nikon version is so much better than the Tokina one, but can you really tell the difference after post-processing and developing? It still amazes me how mundane some people's obsessions can be when it comes to lenses. While the technical aspects of camera equipment are important and you can spend a fortune on the best gear, in the end what matters is composition and balance. One must keep in mind that a monkey with a Nikon D3x (or Canon 5D Mark II) is still a monkey.

UGLY storefront: SunTrust

18th and M Streets, NW, Washington DC. SunTrust took over this strategic streetfront space at the intersection of M, 18th and Connecticut Av., and made it hideous. When you're eating at the Daily Grill across the street, you can see the glare of the fluorescent lights from almost anywhere in the restaurant... prominently. They also frosted the streetfront windows, apparently to protect their privacy. Then why get a space with three glass sides? What a wasted space. American Express had it before, and hung flags of the world in the tall windows, giving the street a vibrant look. Now it's bland and sterile. Thanks a lot, SunTrust.

A hallucination, in the broadest sense, is a perception in the absence of a stimulus. In a stricter sense, hallucinations are defined as perceptions in a conscious and awake state in the absence of external stimuli which have qualities of real perception, in that they are vivid, substantial, and located in external objective space. The latter definition distinguishes hallucinations from the related phenomena of dreaming, which does not involve wakefulness; illusion, which involves distorted or misinterpreted real perception; imagery, which does not mimic real perception and is under voluntary control; and pseudohallucination, which does not mimic real perception, but is not under voluntary control. Hallucinations also differ from "delusional perceptions", in which a correctly sensed and interpreted genuine perception is given some additional (and typically bizarre) significance.

Hallucinations can occur in any sensory modality — visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile, proprioceptive, equilibrioceptive, nociceptive, thermoceptive and chronoceptive.

A mild form of hallucination is known as a disturbance, and can occur in any of the senses above. These may be things like seeing movement in peripheral vision, or hearing faint noises and/or voices. Auditory hallucinations are very common in schizophrenia of the paranoid type. They may be benevolent (telling the patient good things about himself) or malicious, cursing the patient etc. Auditory hallucinations of the malicious type are frequently heard like people talking about the patient behind his back. Like auditory hallucinations, the source of their visual counterpart can also be behind the patient's back. Their visual counterpart is the feeling of being looked-stared at, usually with malicious intent. Not infrequently, auditory hallucinations and their visual counterpart are experienced by the patient together.
