from "vinnies" (st vincent de paul's) I don’t have a blog, so – as most of you fellow flickr fans know, I tend to share my weird and wonderful stories of living in Sydney right here on flickr, via this photoblog. Something very funny happened on Saturday, so I thought I’d share it with you and also take note of it, and perhaps “save” it for future, to come back to for when I need a laugh. I passed by Artamon for some errands and noticed a lovely photo book in the window display of Vinnies (Vinnies is short of St Vincent de Paul’s charity shop outlets. It’s mostly second hand stuff that people give to these charity shops which is then resold and the proceeds go for good causes). I don’t normally go into Vinnie’s as I am not into vintage stuff, however, I was amazed by the good condition of this photo book that it actually made me look further – for it’s price tag. I thought I was not seeing correctly – the book was only 3 dollars! So I went inside and picked up the book from the display window. It was brilliant! (But more about the book later). I brought it to the cashier counter, and put it aside while I browsed more books and CDs….and even LPs! (even thoughI don’t have a record player, but nothing like flipping through these old classics!) Then I realized there was something else I wanted to ask this nice Chinese lady at the counter. I was wearing this yellow shirt which overlaps in the front. It was a gift from my cousin last summer and it seems to fit properly, but due to it’s cut, it’s very inconvenient when I’m wearing bags, as the shirt tends to hang or be dragged down by bag straps thereby revealing the chest. Now, since I’m out doing errands all day, running around finishing stuff and always carrying things around, this kind of shirt really drives me crazy as I do not particularly like showing people on bus, trains, taxis, what colour bra I’m wearing :/ So, since Vinnie’s sells all kinds of knickknacks I thought this might be just the right place to find a broche or a pin or something to keep the shirt folds together. So I explained my problem to this Chinese lady, and then she said something which I absolutely, positively, 100% knew she was gonna say (because I know the Chinese so well!): “But I thought you Aussie girls like wearing low cut!” !! We both started laughing, and the little shop, in this quaint suburb, on a sleepy Saturday morning, echoed with hearty laughs. [1] I laughed because she was spot on – girls in Sydney love wearing skin revealing clothes, so it’s natural to assume (by the shop keeper) I would not mind doing the same. But I don’t feel comfortable in them when I’m just doing stuff around the city. She then busied herself looking through several little boxes of jewellery but did not find any pin that would suit … I was a bit disappointed as I thought that Vinnes would surely have a solution for me. But then, just as I getting ready to drop the idea, she ingeniously fished out an earring! A silver clip-on earring which was just perfect for this shirt!! The size was not too big, and the clip was tight enough to hold the fabric together. I was so impressed! And she did not even charge me for the earring as it was only the one left. I was so happy with my 3 dollar purchase (book) and free gift which not only was a nifty idea, but also looked glamorous and unique! As for the book – I’ve looked through it several times already – it’s great. The book was printed in 2000 (for the Olympic games) and the photos are a bit dated. You can see it from the look of the people and places on the snaps - they have an eighties feel to them. Very retro, very vintage. However, after flipping through the book several times, I realized that even though the hairstyles may have changed, the scenes from the photo book are not dated at all: you will still see the painfully-burnt-looking sunbakers in Bondi; you will still see the leather & chain clad “princess” waiting for a cappuccino; you will still see the diligent Asian “ye ye” looking for a bargain at the Fish Market; you will still see the buzz of the markets, smiley kids playing at the Royal Easter Show, keen swimmers in North Sydney Olympic Pool…….you will still see the weird and wonderful scenes that weave the intricate social backdrops of Sydney…. So, my dear friends, next time you pass a Vinnies, make sure to step in. You will be pleasantly surprised ;) [1] If you are an Aussie girl and like wearing low cuts – please don’t take this comment the wrong way. There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s just not for me. In fact, many of my overseas Chinese friends have commented on how low cut the clothes in Australia are and some overseas girl visitors may end up going back home without much shopping done. Naadam horse racer Mongolia - a 7 years old child and 3 years old horse for a race of 30 km.. Naadam, the `manly games? or suur-kharbaan as it is called in Buryatya is a festival of the three mayor traditional sports in Mongolia: wrestling, horse racing and archery. It is the biggest event in Mongolia?s public life. All over the countryside small naadams are celebrated and in the first part of July (11, 12 and 13) the national naadam in Ulaanbaatar is celebrated. The three day event brings all the best sportsmen from over the country to Ulaanbaatar. It is the most widely watched festival in the country, and is believed to have existed for centuries in one fashion or another. Originally it was a religious festival as an annual sacrificial ritual honouring various mountain gods and to celebrate a community endeavour. Now it formally commemorates the 1921 revolution when Mongolia declared itself a free country.
