Named after a Shropshire market town, "Ellesmere" is a very large Reformist (Arts and Crafts) style mansion with an imposing facade set well back from the road in a quiet, tree lined street in the Melbourne suburb of Moonee Ponds.

Built between Federation (1901) and the Great War (1914), the shingled barge board, pyramid style piers and minimal detailing of "Ellesmere" are very Arts and Crafts inspired. The shingling carries on around the bay window of latticed glass, which is also very Arts and Crafts in style. The strips of red brick that decorate the stucco facade are also in keeping with the Arts and Crafts Movement.

Moonee Ponds, like its neighbouring boroughs of Ascot Vale and Essendon, was etablished in the late 1880s and early 1890s. However, unlike its neighbours, it was an area of affluence and therefore only had middle-class, upper middle-class and some very wealthy citizens. A mansion such as "Ellesmere" would have suited the latter of these groups and would have been home to a moneyed, large Edwardian family with aspirations, and would have required a small retinue of servants to maintain.
