HUNTERS & THEIR PREY--NEIL & HIS PROFESSIONAL CRIMINAL CREW HUNTTO SCORE BIG MONEY TARGETS (BANKS, VAULTS, ARMORED CARS) & ARE, IN TURN, HUNTED BY LT. VINCENT HANNA & HIS TEAM OF COPS. ABOTCHED JOB PUTS HANNA ON THEIR TRAIL WHILE THRY REGROUP & TRYTO PUT TOGETHER ONE LAST BIG 'RETIREMENT' SCORE.

Having developed his skill as a master of contemporary crime drama, writer-director Michael Mann displayed every aspect of that mastery in this intelligent, character-driven thriller from 1995, which also marked the first onscreen pairing of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. The two great actors had played father and son in the separate time periods of The Godfather, Part II, but this was the first film in which the pair appeared together, and although their only scene together is brief, it's the riveting fulcrum of this high-tech cops-and-robbers scenario. De Niro plays a master thief with highly skilled partners (Val Kilmer and Tom Sizemore) whose latest heist draws the attention of Pacino, playing a seasoned Los Angeles detective whose investigation reveals that cop and criminal lead similar lives. Both are so devoted to their professions that their personal lives are a disaster. Pacino's with a wife (Diane Venora) who cheats to avoid the reality of their desolate marriage; De Niro pays the price for a life with no outside connections; and Kilmer's wife (Ashley Judd) has all but given up hope that her husband will quit his criminal career. These are men obsessed, and as De Niro and Pacino know, they'll both do whatever's necessary to bring the other down. Mann's brilliant screenplay explores these personal obsessions and sacrifices with absorbing insight, and the tension mounts with some of the most riveting action sequences ever filmed--most notably a daylight siege that turns downtown Los Angeles into a virtual war zone of automatic gunfire. At nearly three hours, the film qualifies as a kind of intimate epic, certain to leave some viewers impatiently waiting for more action, but it's all part of Mann's compelling strategy. Heat is a true rarity: a crime thriller with equal measures of intense excitement and dramatic depth, giving De Niro and Pacino a prime showcase for their finely matched talents. --Jeff Shannon

Heat

Michael Arroyo has a pitching arm that throws serious heat. But his firepower is nothing compared to the heat Michael faces in his day-to-day life. Newly orphaned after his father led the family’s escape from Cuba, Michael’s only family is his seventeen-yearold brother Carlos. If Social Services hears of their situation, they will be separated in the foster-care system—or worse, sent back to Cuba. Together, the boys carry on alone, dodging bills and anyone who asks too many questions. But then someone wonders how a twelve-year-old boy could possibly throw with as much power as Michael Arroyo throws. With no way to prove his age, no birth certificate, and no parent to fight for his cause, Michael’s secret world is blown wide open, and he discovers that family can come from the most unexpected sources.

seventy-four/soixante-quatorze

seventy-four/soixante-quatorze

I truly have a lot of photos to post from the past few weeks but my room is in such a state of disrepair that I don't even want to stay in there long enough to get the chord to connect my camera to the computer...

This is my breakfast the morning after my first grocery shopping trip (to Metro). It provides me with the opportunity to make my "Things that are different in Montreal/ Things from Toronto that I miss" <-- For today I will limit it to food-related things

1. The grocery store was all in French so I sort of had to guess what things were on sale if the labels were not clear.

2. I was all ready to say "J'ai pas besoin des sacs." to the cash girl but then when I got there I just blurted out "I don't need any bags!" and she didn't hear me so I had to stand there and take everything out of the bags and into my backpack. Then a second person came to try and put my stuff in plastic bags and when she told him that I didn't want any, he started questioning my ability to pack things because he thought I was going to put a bag of potatoes on top of my tomatoes and bread (and not actually just in the milk crate on its own, like I did.)

3. Also, at this store, you can't take the shopping cart with you past the cash register.. I was so confused and kind of got the cart stuck in the aisle as I tried to push it through so I could just put everything back into the cart and then pack my backpack at my leisure instead of trying to rush and get everything off the counter before the next person's stuff was added to the pile.

4. On the whole, I probably won't go back to that Metro again. Jean Talon Market is supposed to be ok but I need to call my aunt and find out for real what is the Toronto Chinatown equivalent here. Even if I have to travel far to do it. because everything was more expensive at the store than in TO (ex. broccoli--- $2.49 for a bunch vs. $0.99!)

5. Oddly enough, avocadoes are cheaper here ($0.99 vs $1.39)

6. Around the house, I miss: a microwave; a cheap, easy to wash frying pan; a big cutting board and broad selection of knives; big huge pasta bowls for pigs; the speakers I could connect my iPod to

----
It's just adjusting stuff... Anyway I should post about Pop and my meeting w/ Jay from yesterday soon because that went PHENOMENALLY!

a+
(short form for cya later according to Jay.. I guess it translates to "a plus?")

As I come back to my desk to eat this delicious microwave personal pan pizza I pushed things out of the way to make room for the pizza. However when I stood back I though it looked like an interesting comentary on what kind of college student I am. Sure there's cheap pizza. But then lots of electronics and projects. I just think it's funny that this is what my desk looks like.

Country music's hottest boy band really doesn't do anything that hasn't already been done just as well or better by earlier country-pop "all-guy" bands like Diamond Rio and Restless Heart. Yet Rascal Flatts' pretty harmonies, so full of painful earnestness and pubescent yearning, are often very affecting, particularly coming from a trio that looks--and often sounds--like its members are still trying to grow their first chest hairs. And now and then, as on Marcus Hummon's rousing "Dry County Girl" and the Nickel Creek-like "Shine On" (cowritten by the three band members), these rascals even show fleeting innovation. But on too many of the remaining nine tracks the trio's youthful exuberance doesn't quite escape the confining shackles of production and overly predictable song fare. --Bob Allen

Island of the Swans

Island of the Swans

Re-issued in its original full length, this acclaimed and bestselling romantic historical novel by award-winning author Ciji Ware tells the true story of passionate and flamboyant Jane Maxwell, the 4th Duchess of Gordon (1749-1812). In love since childhood with Thomas Fraser, when she hears that he's been killed in America, she marries the Duke of Gordon with disastrous results. But Fraser, very much alive, returns to England to claim her love.
In addition to telling a heart-wrenching love story, Island of the Swans also paints a fascinating portrait of a powerful and controversial woman and the tumultuous era in which she lived. Patroness of poet Robert Burns, advisor to King George, painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds, Jane Maxwell was a towering figure in her own time and is an unforgettable heroine.

A Race to Splendor

"Blindly, she inched along a floor pitching as violently as the deck of a boat in a midwinter storm. Her hands touched the threshold opening onto the ninth floor foyer at the instant the glass transom over her head exploded into a thousand pieces. Reflexively, Amelia cast her right arm in front of her face, but not before blood spurted from her scalp and ran down her checks. She crumpled beneath the doorframe, curling into a ball. Amelia screamed again as a twenty-five-foot expanse of wood paneling and masonry pitched outward and plunged nine stories to Montgomery Street below. She knew that no structure on landfill, no matter how well built, could withstand much more shaking without collapsing.
Then, just as suddenly, the convulsions subsided."
Early in 1906, the ground in San Francisco shook buildings and lives from their comfortable foundations.

Amidst rubble, corruption, and deceit, two women-young architects in a city and field ruled by men-find themselves racing the clock and each other during the rebuilding of competing hotels in the City by the Bay.

Based on meticulous research, A Race to Splendor tells the story of the audacious people of one of the world's great cities rebuilding and reinventing themselves after immense human tragedy. Filled with courage, passion, and conflict, Amelia Bradshaw's spirit will capture your imagination as she strives to redraft her life amidst the ruins with both help and hindrance from a wayward son of privilege who pulls her into worlds she'd never have known.

Lodge Enameled Cast-Iron 3-Quart Covered Casserole, Caribbean Blue

This 3 Qt enamel covered casserole is great for cooking, marinating, refrigeration and freezing. The color porcelain enamel on cast iron can be used on gas, electric, ceramic and induction cooktops, as well as in the oven. Not recommended for use on outdoor grills or over open outdoor flames. Not for use in microwaves. Lodge Color Porcelain Enamel on Cast Iron cookware is cast from molten iron in individual sand molds. The porcelain surface eliminates the need to season cast iron. The cast iron vessel has superior heat distribution and retention, evenly heating bottom sidewalls and even the lid. Tightly fitting lid seals in moisture. The excellent heat retention reduces the amount of energy needed for cooking. Two layers of very hard, glossy porcelain enamel are chip resistant and easy to clean. Lid knob is oven safe to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. The black rim on the pot is matte porcelain, not exposed cast iron. Hygienic porcelain enamel is non-reactive with food. Although dishwasher safe, hand washing with warm soapy water is recommended to preserve the cookware's original appearance. 11 3/4" diameter, 2 1/8" deep. Caribbean Blue

Crust

1 1/2 cups thin chocolate wafer cookie crumbs (about 30 cookies)
1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted

Filling

1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
1 can (15 oz) pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix)
4 packages (8 oz each) cream cheese, softened
1 cup packed brown sugar
2/3 cup granulated sugar
5 eggs

Topping

1/2 cup chopped pecans, toasted*
2 oz bittersweet baking chocolate, coarsely chopped
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup caramel topping

DIRECTIONS:

1. Heat oven to 300°F. Wrap foil around outside of bottom and side of 9-inch springform pan to prevent drips. Spray bottom and 1 inch up side of pan with cooking spray. In small bowl, mix cookie crumbs and melted butter. Press crumb mixture on bottom and 1 inch up side of pan. Bake crust 8 to 10 minutes or until set. Cool at room temperature 5 minutes. Refrigerate about 5 minutes or until completely cooled.

2. Meanwhile, in another small bowl, mix flour, pumpkin pie spice and pumpkin; set aside. In large bowl, beat cream cheese with electric mixer on medium speed until smooth and creamy. Gradually beat in brown sugar and granulated sugar until smooth. On low speed, beat in eggs, one at a time, just until blended. Gradually beat in pumpkin mixture until smooth. Pour filling over crust.

3. Bake 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 25 minutes or until edge of cheesecake is set but center still jiggles slightly when moved. Run knife around edge of pan to loosen cheesecake. Turn oven off; open oven door at least 4 inches. Let cheesecake remain in oven 30 minutes.

4. Cool in pan on cooling rack 30 minutes. Refrigerate at least 6 hours or overnight before serving.

5. Just before serving, sprinkle pecans over top of cheesecake. In small microwavable bowl, microwave chocolate and oil uncovered on High 1 minute to 1 minute 30 seconds, stirring every 15 seconds, until melted. Drizzle chocolate over pecans.

6. To serve, run knife around edge of pan to loosen cheesecake; carefully remove side of pan. Drizzle caramel topping over each serving. Store covered in refrigerator.

Dulce de Leche-Banana Pie Recipe

Dulce de Leche-Banana Pie Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

Crust

1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon shortening
2 to 3 tablespoons cold water

Filling

1 can (13.4 oz) dulce de leche
3 ripe medium bananas
1 cup whipping cream
1/4 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1 teaspoon vegetable oil

DIRECTIONS:

1. Heat oven to 450°F. In medium bowl, mix flour and salt. Cut in shortening, using pastry blender (or pulling 2 table knives through ingredients in opposite directions), until particles are size of small peas. Sprinkle with water, 1 tablespoon at a time, tossing with fork until all flour is moistened and dough almost leaves side of bowl (1 to 2 teaspoons more water can be added if necessary).

2. On lightly floured surface, shape dough into a ball. Flatten ball to 1/2-inch thickness, rounding and smoothing edges. With floured rolling pin, roll dough into 11-inch round, rolling from center to edge. Fold dough in half; place in 9-inch glass pie plate. Unfold; gently press in bottom and up side of plate, being careful not to stretch dough.

3. Fold and roll edge of dough under, even with plate; flute edge. Prick bottom and side of dough generously with fork. Bake 9 to 12 minutes or until light golden brown. Cool completely, about 30 minutes.

4. Spoon contents of can of dulce de leche into center of cooled crust; gently spread to edge. Thinly slice bananas; arrange over dulce de leche.

5. In medium bowl, beat whipping cream and powdered sugar with electric mixer on high speed until stiff peaks form. Spread over bananas.

6.In small resealable freezer plastic bag, place chocolate chips and oil; seal bag. Microwave on High 30 seconds; knead bag to mix melted chips and unmelted chips. Microwave 15 to 30 seconds longer or until all chips are melted and smooth. Snip off tiny corner of bag. Pipe melted chocolate mixture over whipped cream. Store pie in refrigerator.

Captain Cooker [Pig]

Captain Cooker [Pig]

Captain Cooker [Pig]
Introduced to New Zealand by Captain James Cook, Captain Cooker pigs were derived from English breeds, and have subsequently formed most of the country’s wild pig population.
It is thought that Captain Cookers were introduced by James Cook on his first voyage to New Zealand, in 1769. Originating from the old English breeds of Tamworth, Berkshire and large black, Captain Cookers are the most prolific wild pigs in New Zealand.
Captain Cookers are bigger and similar to the wild pigs of Europe. They thrived in the New Zealand bush, their numbers increasing rapidly between 1840 and 1880, but dwindling once food became more scarce. Captain Cookers damaged pastures and crops, killed lambs, and destroyed the habitats of native species such as kakapo (flightless parrots) and land snails. Thousands of these pigs were killed in the 1880s by hunters and farmers. Numbers rose again during both world wars, when there was a shortage of hunters, ammunition, and petrol for transport. However, they have decreased since, as a result of bounty schemes, forest clearance and hunting. Since the late 1950s, Captain Cookers have steadily declined nationwide – hunting them has remained popular.

What We Think

Fun factor:
Durability:
Ease of assembly:
Educational factor:

The Good: An exciting sensorial, put-and-take toy for your infant/toddler.
The Challenging: Could be damaged if dropped or thrown repeatedly.
In a Nutshell: A colorful toy that pops balls into the air or onto the ground for chasing.

Watch the fan pop the colorful balls into the air! View larger.

Colorful Balls that Spin and Pop in the Air
The Busy Ball Popper is a one-piece toy that's made up of a removable ball trough, tube, and tray. When your child presses down on the big-eyed mushroom character on the Ball Popper, the balls move up the tube and pop out of the top, falling back into the tray to start the process all over again.
The popper is made to withstand the rigors of your infant's play and can be easily cleaned with a damp towel. The plastic balls are large enough that you will not have to worry about them as choking hazards, but when your child is popping the balls, make sure to keep an eye out for balls as they can go off of the track occasionally. The popper also includes eight lively songs that start once you have pumped down the plunger to activate the ball-popping fan.
Keep in mind that although the Busy Ball Popper is made out of a strong, durable plastic, it is fairly heavy and should be kept on a flat surface while being played to avoid any damage to your furniture. The toy also shuts itself off after a short period of time, but it is recommended to always turn it off manually for battery conservation.
Great Sensorial, Put-and-take Work For Your Child
This ball popper is a great toy for infants gaining gross motor skills, or for toddlers who are ready to chase the balls around the house and dance to the upbeat music. It is visually appealing with its bright, colorful balls and characters, and you never know where the balls may land, making it an exciting and new adventure each time.
What's in the Box
Ball popper base, plastic ball tray and lower trough, and five plastic balls. (Batteries are not included.)

The Popcorn Popper I

The Popcorn Popper I

Here's the bottom half of our new popcorn popper, awaiting its maiden voyage. We're gradually trying to steer our food preparation activities toward "natural" means and away from heavily processed items with lots of chemicals; hence we're trying to cut way back on microwave popcorn. (We'll still use it on occasion for sheer convenience, but for the most part, the new popper is the way to go.)

This is an updated model of the popper my parents have owned for more than twenty years. (Heck, closer to thirty, I think.) The only differences are cosmetic, I think, and the fact that the butter-melting well at the top of the popper cover bowl is better designed now.

NO microwave needed!!!!

NO microwave needed!!!!

Popcorn is one of my favorite foods when it's cooked right.

I use the West Bend Stir Crazy Popper. It has an improved design by adding a motorized stirring rod which ensures that every single kernel pops every time. In about five minutes the Stir Crazy Popper produces up to 6 quarts of perfectly popped corn using one tablespoon of oil per 1/4 cup corn. You can clean it with just a quick swipe of the sponge. For added flavor place a bit of butter to melt over the corn as it pops. The plastic cover doubles as a serving bowl so when the cycle is done just flip it over to enjoy popcorn that is guaranteed to be good to the last pop.

Microwave Shielding Material

microwave shielding material

    shielding material
  • Any material that is used to absorb radiation and thus effectively reduce the intensity of radiation, and in some cases, eliminate it. Lead, concrete, aluminum, water, and plastic are examples of commonly used shielding material.

    microwave
  • An electromagnetic wave with a wavelength in the range 0.001–0.3 m, shorter than that of a normal radio wave but longer than those of infrared radiation. Microwaves are used in radar, in communications, and for heating in microwave ovens and in various industrial processes

  • cook or heat in a microwave oven; "You can microwave the leftovers"

  • a short electromagnetic wave (longer than infrared but shorter than radio waves); used for radar and microwave ovens and for transmitting telephone, facsimile, video and data

  • kitchen appliance that cooks food by passing an electromagnetic wave through it; heat results from the absorption of energy by the water molecules in the food

Advanced Materials and Design for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Advanced Materials and Design for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

With electromagnetic compliance (EMC) now a major factor in the design of all electronic products, it is crucial to understand how electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding products are used in various industries. Focusing on the practicalities of this area, Advanced Materials and Design for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding comprehensively introduces the design guidelines, materials selection, characterization methodology, manufacturing technology, and future potential of EMI shielding.
After an overview of EMI shielding theory and product design guidelines, the book extensively reviews the characterization methodology of EMI materials. Subsequent chapters focus on particular EMI shielding materials and component designs, including enclosures, metal-formed gaskets, conductive elastomer and flexible graphite components, conductive foam and ventilation structures, board-level shielding materials, composite materials and hybrid structures, absorber materials, grounding and cable-level shielding materials, and aerospace and nuclear shielding materials. The last chapter presents a perspective on future trends in EMI shielding materials and design.
Offering detailed coverage on many important topics, this indispensable book illustrates the efficiency and reliability of a range of materials and design solutions for EMI shielding.

Electromagnetic Shielding (Wiley Series in Microwave and Optical Engineering)

The definitive reference on electromagnetic shielding materials, configurations, approaches, and analyses
This reference provides a comprehensive survey of options for the reduction of the electromagnetic field levels in prescribed areas. After an introduction and an overview of available materials, it discusses figures of merit for shielding configurations, the shielding effectiveness of stratified media, numerical methods for shielding analyses, apertures in planar metal screens, enclosures, and cable shielding. Up to date and comprehensive, Electromagnetic Shielding:
Explores new and innovative techniques in electromagnetic shielding
Presents a critical approach to electromagnetic shielding that highlights the limits of formulations based on plane-wave sources
Analyzes aspects not normally considered in electromagnetic shielding, such as the effects of the content of the shielding enclosures
Includes references at the end of each chapter to facilitate further study
The last three chapters discuss frequency-selective shielding, shielding design procedures, and uncommon ways of shielding—areas ripe for further research. This is an authoritative, hands-on resource for practicing telecommunications and electrical engineers, as well as researchers in industry and academia who are involved in the design and analysis of electromagnetic shielding structures.

Miniature Kitchen

Miniature Kitchen

The floor is temporary. I'm not sure what I want for the floor, but once I figure it out, I'll use this, which is brick wallpaper, as the template. I still need to electrify the room and get an overhead fixture for it. None of the cabinets open, nor does the fridge. The microwave does open, though.

I also need to decide what to do on the bland wall over the stove. I don't have any more of those tiles I used over the sink, which were perfect. Maybe I'll find more at Philadelphia Miniaturia in November.

Kitchen 4

Kitchen 4

Yeah, I know, I got lazy and stood in one spot to take these shots. If you look close you can see the new cabinet and the new microwave over the stove. All here you can see there is a paint job done on the east wall over the stove and a different yellow out of the kitchen area on the east wall. Also the door has been painted . The shelf over the door is also gone.

Today I passed my full motorbike test, it's been a very intensive 5 days of working up to the test, especially as before Saturday I'd never ridden a motorbike before.

Instruction by BSM (John and Neil) was excellent, and I even got to the stage where heading out on the Suzuki GS500 was fun. A great feeling :)
