SS-Schijager Batallion "Norge": Norwegian Ski infantry on the Eastern front 1941-44 (Units)

SS-Schijager Batallion

Norway was one of the nations producing the highest number of volunteers for the German war machine during World War II. Most of them ended up in the mechanized units belonging to the famous Waffen SS units Wiking and Nordland, but a number of them etched their place in the history books as members of the elitist subdivisional units of the SS Division Nord, fighting above the Polar Circle during the war. Among these units were the Ski Infantry Battalion-the SS-Schijager Batallion Norge. This is their story.

Of course I couldn't drive pass Varoddbrua (the bridge) and not get another shot.

I've been thinking of different locations to get some new photos of these bridges lately, and using Google Maps I realized it's possible to shoot from the hillside on the eastern side - though it should prove tricky to find a good position (lots of houses and quite steep), and I'm not too familiar in the area, especially not by night.

On Google Maps I spotted something looking like an overview, and true enough, I found it, but the bushes in front were just too high, so any attempt to rig my tripod was ruined by branches in the viewfinder. Darn. (add to photo bag: branch cutter / chainsaw)

I then discovered a little rock outcrop behind me, a steep 5m higher - perfect, no stupid branches there! Only problem, I had to sneak through someones garden and do a bit of slippery climbing with all my gear to reach it. It was just enough space for me and my tripod to stand on it (think 0,5mx0,5m) and the abyss below.. All rigged, and veery slow movements in the pitch dark, I did get a few shots before a dog started barking inferiously at me in a nearby garden, and I realized I should probably try find another spot before anyone would think I was sneaking in their backyard late at night :)

Some cold fingers later I tried the last position I'd spotted, just above the road/tunnel, still a bit "bushy", but nevertheless I managed to mount my tripod, and get a few shots, using my remote shutter and trying different exposures, all depending on the amount of cars (light) passing by (sometimes none, sometimes many)

The biggest problem from this location was the composition. It was hard to get everything (interesting) into the viewfinder and leave out the disturbing parts. Next time maybe try even further to the right.

I immediatly knew this photo were gonna be great. I'm sure you know the feeling: "Yes, can't wait to see it large". That dotted line of light was some service truck with flashing lights on the roof, creating the cool pattern you see.

2hrs later, after 1st version: So, I've been strling with this photo in post-processing. The lamp light for such a long exposure ruins the sky with ugly distinctive lines, leaving me no other option to darken it. I kinda wanted light on the bridge tower, using multi-RAW processing, but didn't turn out good. Had enough for tonight.. got a macarell waiting for me in the refrigerator! Maybe better with HDR here to get better balance between light/dark.

Interesting perspective that I will for sure come back to.

More photos from this session coming up probably next days.
