Jerry Jones lived in the dirt-roads town of Oakville, during the 1930’s Depression. A week before Christmas, his father told him that he wouldn’t be getting a new bicycle.
“It’s hard times now,” said his father, hugging Jerry. “We folks, in these tenement housing just can’t afford it.”
Jerry, nine years old, went outside and sat on his bicycle, which he had outgrown. He was youthfully slim and several inches taller than last year. His legs were too long for the pedals. His feet dragged on the ground. He had to lean forward onto the low handlebars.
Jerry walked his bicycle into his back yard. His father had a limited toolbox on the porch. “Maybe if I raised the seat and handlebars higher ” Jerry said to himself.
As the cool sun beamed over his shoulder, Jerry, who had his father’s warm brown face, grabbed the pliers. Grunting, he tried to unlock the bicycle seat chassis’ screw. Banging it loose, after using oil, he pulled up the rod. The seat rose higher.
Tightening up the screw again, he bruised his finger.
“Gotta fix these crazy handlebars,” said Jerry, as he pushed and tugged with both hands. Ten minutes later he unscrewed the bolt. He wiggled the handlebars so hard while working the flange, that he fell onto the ground.
“Maybe I should’ve asked dad to help me,” he said. Then, he got back up, and tightened the handlebars, now jutting skyward, himself.
After sweating and dirtying his clothes, Jerry leaned against the porch. He nursed his aching finger. When he re-entered the house, his father handed him a Christmas card gift substitute.
“Hey! Thanks a lot, Dad,” Jerry smiled but he stayed awake all night dreaming of a new bicycle.
“It’s five days ’fore Christmas,” said Jerry, getting back to his fixing.
Then, when he stood by his bicycle, it appeared to be taller. Jerry mounted his bicycle and it WAS his size. “My feet don’t drag the ground!” he shouted. “I don’t have to droop down in front to hold the handlebars! I’ve made this thing right!”
“WOW!” said Jerry, “gotta show it off!” He sped to his nearby friend, Freddie Franco’s house.
“Hey, you got a new bike?!” yelled Freddie, running across his no-grass lawn to meet Jerry. “Never seen a bike like yours.”
“Meet the ‘Merry From Jerry Bike,’ Freddie,” Jerry grinned. “I just raised the
seat and turned the handlebars straight up as high as the sky.”
Then, Jerry circled his bicycle around Freddie and squeaked on the brakes.
“Where’s your bike, Freddie?”
“My stubby bike ain’t as good as yours, Jerry,” said Freddie, rolling his bicycle from the side of the house.
“I know, pal. Mine was a runt, too”
“Gonna help me out, buddy?”
“Yeah,” said Jerry, as he opened up the pouch he had brought along with him. It contained, pliers, screwdriver, and an oil can. “I’ll need your help on this.”
They raised the height of the bicycle seat and turned up the handlebars. In an hour they were finished.
Freddie mounted his bicycle to check the size. He peddled out of the yard with his auburn hair blowing in the wind. Then, he quickly came back and skidded to a stop in front of Jerry.
“Hey! You did it, Jerry!” Freddie said, speeding away and making another circle. “Thanks, ole buddy!”
“Merry Christmas, Freddie!”
“Merry, yourself, Jerry!” laughed Freddie. “Let’s zoom outta here!”
“I’m ready, Freddie!” said Jerry.
As the boys raced around Oakville, they saw a rusting bicycle next to a trashcan.
They stopped. With Jerry’s pouch of tools, they pushed, pulled, and stretched it into high shape. Finished, they moved the bicycle to the front door. Jerry wrote a

note on it and they left.

As they started back home, they saw more discarded bicycles scattered about in the shanty town.
“Too many bikes for us to house call,” Freddie said sadly.
“We won’t have to,” said Jerry, with a Christmas spirit smile. “They’ll come to

“Yeah, in your back yard,” said Freddie. “Let’s get the word out all over Oakville!”

I love taking long bicycle rides!

Every year in August, Saint Louis has one of it's cooler, more 'happening' and 'progressive' events - the 'Moonlight Ramble' - where the police have the streets of the course blocked off to auto traffic, making it safe for the riders. The cyclists get to choose from either a 11 or an 18 mile course through downtown. I picked the 18 mile course with Wendy's son and his two cousins.

It started at 14th and Market Street (next to the War Memorial), went west through Forest Park, then south to Tower Grove Park, then east on Chouteau Blvd., ending up back where it started. This was the 48th year of the event. The weather was especially nice, cool crisp air, and clear skies availing an excellent view of the full moon overhead.

Local popular radio station KSH-E 95 was there with their broadcast van and DJ's, and Ted Drewe's frozen custard (a local summertime favorite!) was given out to participants at the end.

I've been on a serious biking kick this year so far, price of gas notwithstanding. Problem is, some douchebag cut the lock and stole my GT hybrid from behind a sushi bar a few months ago. While I decide what to buy and/or build next, three of my good friends lent me their extra bikes... All at once. My friends are so fucking cool.

I love love love the recumbent but I'm not super-sold on the day-to-day practicality of it yet. It's a LOT of fun and super-comfortable though. Also I tend to carry a lot of things in my pockets and having to keep checking to make sure I didn't lose my wallet is getting irritating.

These are "repurposed" gloves (premade, customer supplied). The "tattoos", however, are hand-cut and hand-sewn fabric letters. I do all the stitching with a needle, thread, and one hand as my "model" (the gloves have to stay stretched while you sew the letters, or else it won't look right when you're done), so I end up with some nasty-lookin' pricked up knuckles, but art/fashion/life = pain, right?

I was tagged by Jana and was not into publishing 16 things about me on Flickr because really thing some things are too personal. I am very open and open-minded. But then Saskia tagged me too. And I really can't stand that presure!!!!!! LOL

So here we go.

I have Spina bifida. It is both a blessing and a curse. The handicap means that some muscles in my legs and hips are paralyzed. I can walk but slower than most people and I am much sooner tired than other people. And there are some other inconveniences.

I live in a very small one room apartment of about 50 square meters. So my kitchen, livingroom and bed are in one space. Besides that I have a small bathroom and a hall. I would love to get something bigger but it is very expensive and hard to find. Besides that my apartment is very close to a shopping mall and that is very convenient. So I don't have to walk long distances to do my shopping.

I have one sister. She is 2.5 years younger than me. And we used to be best friends and always stood up for each other. Unfortunately we don't see each other often enough because we are both very busy. Tomorrow I will meet her again at my dad's place for christmas.

Since my parents divorced 5 years ago it is hard to do family things. I don't celebrate my birthday anymore because my dad does not want to meet my mom anymore. And it is difficult to arrange that they don't visit at the same time during my birthday. Both my parents are in a new relationship now. But that is not the same as it used to be.

Photography is both my hobby and my job. I work for the Dutch National Museum of Natural History in Leiden as a photographer. 10 Years ago I started working there as a collection manager which was mainly the registration of the collection. Three years ago this changed and I started doing a little photography for the museum. And now it is full-time photography. Next year a book about fossils will be published that has my photos in it. And I am very proud of that.

But number 7 is another passion of mine. Cooking. I love to cook and enjoy cooking nice food just for myself Some people call me crazy that I do this all just for myself. But I love it. My inspiration comes from cooking books, restaurants I visit, TV shows about cooking and the countries that I visit. Two years ago in Rio de Janeiro I bought a really big cooking book with Brazilian recipes. Unfortunately I only know a few words in Portuguese. So it is a bit difficult to work with. But I can look at the pictures!

In number 1 I said my handicap is a blessing and a curse. But never explained why it is also a blessing. It is because it made me into what I am now. And I have a few mistakes in my character. But overall people like me for who I am and I am proud of that. It is not easy when you are a kid, and other kids look at you funny, don’t want to play with you and fight you even. Just because you’re different. So I can say I came a long way.

I really hate discrimination and believe all people are equal. No matter what the colour of their skin is, or their religion or sexual preference, or handicap or whatever. Everybody deserves a chance in
life. And I can really get angry when I meet narrrow-minded people that discriminate others.

It is related to my passion for travelling and getting to know different cultures and people. And so I love knowing about the history of people.
In my late teens I became interested in Italian Renaissance, and especially in a person called Leonardo Da Vinci. So, no my nickname on Flickr is not a coincidence.
Da Vinci was a very interesting man, who was a painter, a scientist, a sculptor and an engineer. Since I read a lot about him, I discovered that we have a lot in common in the sense that he had a lot of things that he was interested in. And I always say that my curiosity is my best property and that I like know a little about everything.

Haywire My Life in the Mines

XIV - Shoulder Patch

These are father’s recollections from WW II. I have included these here because father died from the mines and I find it ironic and sad that a man who endured so much in a time of war eventually succumbed to an invisible killer in a time of peace.

Father served with the First Special Service Force during World War II and was attached to the American Army for all purposes except pay and record-keeping. As a result of this service in the American Army, father was awarded the U.S. army's Combat Infantry Badge. This was later converted to the Bronze Star but only for those past members of the F.S.S.F. who were still living. Unfortunately father had already passed on by that time.

The Story of Gordon Stanley Hall from Hillsburgh, Ontario During WW II

It will be my purpose here to simply record the stories that father told of his service during WW II. I will record them as they were told to me, and in some cases to others, while in my presence.

Father joined the Canadian Army in March 1941, and went overseas with the 100th A.A. Battalion from Guelph, Ontario. In England, he spent little time with this Battalion since it was over strength, and he was sent to the 2nd Heavy A.A. Battalion. Then in approximately April 1944, he was sent to a reinforcement battalion in Italy, and from here, chose to join the Royal Canadian Regiment. After spending about three months with the R.C.R. in Italy, he volunteered for service with a commando unit named the First Special Service Force or in the Canadian Army, the 1st Special Service Battalion or the 2nd Canadian Parachute Battalion. This combined Canadian-American group is presently better known as The Devil's Brigade because of the movie made about them called "The Devil's Brigade". The F.S.S.F. was disbanded in December 1944, and as a result, father was sent back to the R.C.R., with whom he remained until the end of the war (in Europe) on May 8, 1945.

Before going overseas father was stationed in New Brunswick. He recalled that he once went AWOL, and that after he had been AWOL for some time, he was returning to camp, and met three members of another unit, The Governor General's Horse Guard. Just in conversation, he told them that he had been AWOL, and was on his way back to camp to face the music. Despite the fact that he was returning to camp in any case, the three members of the Governor General's Horse Guard tried to put father under arrest. Father had a rather nasty look on his face when he said that these men did not manage to arrest him, and he subsequently returned to camp under his own steam. In the wee hours of the morning, however, he was awakened and arrested. He was charged with being AWOL, and with resisting arrest, and was not let out of prison until it was time to board the boat for overseas.

Many years later, however, he did say that he had a girlfriend while in England, and since she worked for the British government, she knew how many ships had been lost in the transatlantic crossing to German submarines. Father allowed that he might not have been in such a hurry to join the army, if he had known this number in advance.

The initials AA, as in the 100th A.A. Battalion and the 2nd Heavy A.A. Battalion, are pronounced Ack Ack and stand for anti-aircraft. Father recalled that he slept for some two years with his boots on because when the air raid sirens started to blow, he had to be up and running immediately. They used radar to shoot at the German aircraft, and father recalled shooting one down--a Heinkel 1-11 with five men on board, and a full load of bombs. He went to see the crash site afterwards, and said that there was a large crater, and that he had never seen so much blood in his life. Apparently there were houses nearby, and the gore was hanging off the houses.

During the very early period of father's stay in England, it was required that all armed forces personnel be prepared to wear a gas mask at any time; so it was necessary to carry a gas mask even when off the base. After some time however, an announcement was made over the radio that this would no longer be required, and accordingly father went to a bar just outside the army base on which he was stationed, without his mask. On exiting the bar however, a senior officer took father to task for not carrying his mask. Father tried to explain that it was on the radio all over England that this was no longer required, but the senior officer would not be deterred saying that it had not been officially announced yet on father's army base. Quite some time passed after this with no repercussions, and father felt that his transgression had been forgotten. The day came, however, when he was marched in to see the Commanding Officer. His explanations were to no avail and he was fined forty dollars.

Retro style circa 1992-3. Feat drilled crank arm, Pace forks (with KEVLAR!!!) and a mammoth 1" travel, Suntour chain rings, XT rear mech, pink anodised X-Lite bar ends and QR skewers, Hydraulic rim brakes (which don't work very well), Thomson Flite saddle (which is a pretty knackered), THUMB SHIFTERS (which do work), flat bars and a stem which is as long as my arm.
Despite all that it's really, really light (must be less than 25lbs) and rides quite nicely - although you can't stop.
As with any bike this age though, it's not in perfect condition. The rims are pretty chewed up, there's a crack in the Campagnolo rear too. There's also a scratch in the paint on the non-drive side chain stay (pictured). The brakes need replacing with canti-lever brakes (this was built before V brakes) and the chain, cassette and chain rings could do with replacing.
Still...looks good doesn't it?

My Boy!

My new GT Mountain Bike. I am really happy with the iDrive feature. With the crank being mounted on the swing arm with the rear shock, I can kick as hard as I want and not have to worry about losing half the energy to the rear suspension.

I stopped to get a shot of my bike tonight, I bought it last year when I upgraded from the Fuji Track Pro in October (The old alloy '07 one). It's an Azzurri. I stripped it down, rubbed it back and painted it flat black enamel when I got it though and the finish is superb. 57cm frame. SOOOO stiff! I have one from each wheelset in tonight.

Specialized Tricross Singlecross

My new work/pub/hack bike, replacing my Carlton.

The intention was just to replace the frame but I simpy couldn't ignore the heavy discounts on offer for 2008 models, so a complete bike was bought, with the Carlton stripped and homes found for the parts.

I really liked the unusual niche of a singlespeed cyclocross bike (albeit converted to road use!)

As it will never be used off-road I swapped the 700x32c Specialized Houffalize cyclocross tyres for 700x28c Continental Gatorskin road ones.

The 172.5mm Sugino chainset was retained but it's 42T Messenger chainring was swapped for a more usable 48T one, along with a new Sram PC-1 chain.

The Carlton has been cannibalised savagely. For this bike it gave up it's Cateye computer, MKS Sylvan Stream pedals and toe clips, plus it's Christophe leather toe straps (I converted to toe clips in bad weather and don't know why I never used them before - it's much better!).

Finally a set of new SKS Bluemels mudguards and my old pannier rack from my Sirrus were added.

It rides fabulously on the road, with nice handling, the carbon fork ironing out bumps nicely and with the 48/18 gearing, spins along a treat.

I am particularly impressed with the Tektro V-brakes, which have massive stopping power and modulation (something that, sadly couldn't have been said about the Carlton's centrepulls - they looked beautiful and (just about) worked but locked up too easily!).

The addition of the bar top levers is a great touch and whilst of course they don't have the sheer power of the drop levers, they're really good. A huge advance on those dreadful secondary levers I had on an old BSA road bike as a kid!

Very happy with my purchase!

Update.....have now fitted a lovely little 8mm MKS chain tug - the alloy dropouts simply wouldn't keep the wheel in place, it constantly moved forward, no matter how tight I did the wheel nuts up!

If anyone has a Singlecross, Langster or any other frame with similar alloy dropouts, I highly recommend it

so i finally decided to get a bicycle! it's a Giant Defy 2 and it's a vast improvement on my old bike (hey there's a groove taken out of the saddle for my gooch on this one). not to say that i didn't love riding my old one, but i can't believe i thrashed it out on a mountain bike. we definately go a lot faster, and seem to glide instead of rumble across the road. much more efficient, and heaps of fun.

bought it from maroubra cycles. good blokes there. recommended.

i've named her Fiona. Why? Well, it's a Giant Defy ----> fi ----> Fiona. my old bike was named stacey (that doesn't have a cool story, and she wasn't very photogenic)

stationary bicycles are pretty tough to shoot (especially with no assistance), so i just rested it up against a wall. did a long exposure with fill flash. had a garden sensor light coming from the top right. i might try something else in a different location.

Cyclists

These guys were doing a stationary bicycle ride to Lapland to raise funds for disadvantaged children. They are from the army signals unit based in Nuneaton. If you felt fit you were able to have a go yourself. They called it a free gym session!

Yamaha Fazer 600 Ride Review

2000miles, nearly a little less but that is a two months ride in almost the weather that is wet and cold and get to your bones with the kind of chill you face in this country.

Yamaha Fazer 600 S2, 2009 model which comes very close to its predecessors and possibly take over them with few very little differences. I decided over the Yamaha Tenere 660 and upgrading my previous 99 Fzr 600 to 2009 model.

Obviously for the like minded who ride in any weather and commuting is primarily the main purpose, this bike serves a good purpose.

Handling : certainly has gone better from the previous ones. Only if you tend to ride her on the motorways, you will suffer due to the wind drags and would highly wish for something with a bigger windscreen fitted from Yamaha.

Power : Able to pull a straight 66mph in the first gear with everything stand still, it sure has no compromise on the power range as the engine is a pure derivative from the existing R6 - as stated by Yamaha. Indeed, the smooth powerline is remarkably well noticed with the throttle response.

Engine : With the 2000miles on the clock, it has no single sign of any cramps or any noticeable alarm which will ring a bell in my mind. Possibly, the only sign that on the positive lines is that it is extremely quiet and wants you to make it scream going up the power curve in any gear.

Braking : From the previous Fazer, which was 10years old to the new generation of present day motorcycle I have had few close brakings in the traffic bloc city of London, it goes very sharp. Personally, it is well in control presentable bike, which wont let you down with braking. Sharp and precise if you only know how to bring this beauty to stop in controlled agression.

Built Quality : Definitely, much lighter given all the motorbike sellers know what they want with the future motorcycles, dont you reckon, it is true - you would find yourself answering it, YES - isn't it ? Mark it on the 8/10 with only biggest miss being the small windscreen and looks bit under expected standard for a big bike like this..

Yamaha could have done much better with its big deflective windscreen as default.

Mileage : It is a big thumb down as I commute everyday and find it quite disturbing that a previously non FI 10years older Fazer was a much better performer on mileage than compared to this new FI technologically advanced version, it brings only 110 miles to a full tank. Again, I m not an aggressive rider and prefers to take it smooth and riding through the city mostly.

I would have liked to say, overall this machine has a power range to offer you what you may want in a city and mostly even on the motorways, to clinch your thirst, it is capable of 146mph what more do you feel you will ask from all-in-one motorcycle.
