The Hump: Balik (August 26, 2009) Balik August 26, 2009 by Cesar S. Guevarra It was to be the last conversation they had. More than regret or anything of the sort, Luis felt a strange form of disappointment each time he thought of it. When he was younger, shortly after he learned about the realities of life and how it surely must come to an end, he would sometimes feel brave enough to imagine how it would be when it was time for his mother and father to pass on. In his mind played vivid scenes not unfit for the cinema—an ailing parent, a death bed, and a long, drawn-out goodbye. A goodbye that would see him shed the clothes of youth and bear the mantle of adulthood on his yet frail, but willing, shoulders. A parting that, while fraught with sadness, was marked with love and quiet courage. Most of all, Luis liked to think that each dying breath would bring with it parcels of a wisdom gained over a lifetime; a wisdom strong enough to hold him steady through any storm, a wisdom deep enough to never run dry as he constantly drew from it. This was not to be. It was around eight in the morning one Saturday and Luis was getting ready to go out and play basketball with his friends. On his way out of the house, his father called out to him. "Luis, anak, I'm sorry but would you mind going to the hardware store and getting me some 1/2-inch tubing before you go see your friends? The kitchen faucet's sprung a leak again and I'd like to get it fixed before your mother gets back from the market." "Yes, sir." "Thanks, Luis. Here's a hundred. You keep the change so you can get something to eat after your game." He took the money and set off. He thought of going to Lee's because it was nearer, but immediately remembered that they more often than not did not have whatever it was you needed in stock. He decided to head to newly-opened store at the corner of Soler and Mapua, "They ought to have what Papa needs. They can't very well just have opened and then have nothing to sell." On his way back to their house, he ran into his Tito Jessie. "Luis, you make sure to tell your father he better be at the party I'm having tonight. It's not everyday that a man turns forty and it would mean a lot to me if Kuya Fernan was there. Here, take these crabs to Ate Susan but will you please see to it that she stays away from the roe? Hay naku, your mother and her seafood." "Yes, Tito Jessie." Then it happened. As he turned that corner that led to their street, Luis made out a figure he thought was slumped at the door of their house. He drew nearer and realized it was his mother. His steps became hurried and after a couple of meters, he was in full gallop. He was sure something was wrong. Everything was a blur. His heart was pounding, his knees shook and buckled and he thought it impossible that they were still holding him up, his throat dry as his eyes started to water. He was running as fast as he could yet he was sure he would never reach his mother in time. He was finally at their door. He looked at his mother's face. Tears. Shock. Surrender. "No, no, no, no…" He made an attempt to think. "What about the faucet? Tito Jessie's party? He can't be… What about Mama? I was just gone for half an hour… He gave me money… ?-inch tubing, I have it here… I should have tried Lee's and maybe I could have gotten back quicker… What if I passed through the eskinita? Yes, definitely… I would have made it home faster… One hundred pesos." There it was, then. Their last conversation was about a leaky faucet. When they got back from the funeral, Luis headed straight for his parents' bedroom. For a few minutes he just stood there, in the dark, staring at nothing, willing himself into a state of numbness. Some of his aunts and uncles arrived and the ruckus they made downstairs startled him. Half-conscious, he made for the light switch and a harsh fluorescence filled the room. To his right was a clothes rack and on it hung some of his father's shirts. He mindlessly took one of the shirts and placed it to his face, relishing the scent that to him meant weekends in the country, nights watching TV, afternoons fixing his bike, an education in honor and dignity, and, apart from his mother, home. He put the shirt back on the rack and again just lingered where he stood, trying to recall each and every moment he had spent with his father as if forcing him back into existence. A considerable amount of time later and he gave up. He decided to go see how his mother was doing but a thought stopped him mid-step as he went out of the room. "Maybe if I just pretended he was away on some trip. I could do that at least till things get back to normal… or at least till I get used to him not being here. That sounds good." He managed a smile. "But people who go away on trips usually come back." I feel odd about my JDate profile because it seems like I'm admitting defeat that I can't find a girlfriend on my own. 2. I feel bad ordering a water to drink at a restaurant, and even if I want water, I'll still get a diet coke/pepsi. 3. scan0024 The ancient Greeks were naked or rode on horseback, nor, even approximately, looked like an idealized images. Judging by the average Greek osteoarheoloskom material was a stocky, robust, relatively short legs. How, then, the Greek art defines a man? Aristophanes legendary winners of the marathon describes: smooth chest, bright skin, big shoulders, a short tongue, a big butt and a small penis (Clouds, 1011-13). The man was naked, a woman, until the beginning of Hellenism Praksitela and mostly dressed. Only with a few exceptions, all the Greek artists, and all the ancient authors who wrote about nijma men. Greek world, as we know it today, is a male world, and the state, the polis, the patriarchal concept of involving only adult congenital men. Publicly displayed works of art, especially sculpture and architecture are much more addressing the man, but a woman. All of this points to one, relationship between the audience and watched in Greek art becomes the relationship between Erastus and eromena, beloved and lover, in which the sculpture (or pictures) eromen, junior partner in a homosexual relationship, which is passive, perhaps, accentuated reduced penis . Does this mean that Partenonski frieze procession desirable homosexual partners? Worth it just for the tens of thousands of kouros, a sculpture of naked boys who are like tombstones stood all over the Greek world? It is obvious that we can not Greek construction of corporeality and sexuality measure today's standards, but the affinity that our culture is shown to the classics (Twentieth Century, however, follows the trend of abandonment of traditional forms) are not missed. Later, we see that there, although there is a huge gap of misunderstanding, many points of contact between modern and Greek civil taste. When we talk about the relationship of the human body, with all their needs, and cultural norms, are talking also about how integration in society. The basic form of the Greek society is distinct homosocijalnost, and for the Greek polis, we can rightly say that the men's club, while all other social groups condemned the segregation (women, foreigners), or completely off (the slaves). Unlike the Eastern civilizations, where distant and invisible to authorities govern the lives of its subjects, the polis, which is completely independent and self-sufficient entity, a man (man) becomes visible, palpable agent in the creation of the state. However, this task is not easy. Greek soldier, farmer or tradesman, a voter, a full-fledged citizen, all in one. Tensions emerged that many contradictory roles that the Greeks had to exercise can be felt in the description of the Athenian demos from around 400 BC AD: capricious, choleric, unjust, inconstant, but also accommodating, compassionate, sympathetic, boastful, conceited, humble, gentle and wild, all in one. (Gas NH 35th 69) Not surprisingly, therefore, that neither Plato nor Aristotle placed him in a democracy are not desirable and equitable social order. The woman was in the polis became the antithesis of a positive, active, male principle. At the Parthenon on the two places could see the struggle of the Greeks against the dangerous female troupe, the Amazons (the metopes and the Athena's shield), while in the temple, on the podium Athens Partenos there view of creating the first woman, Pandora, which, as we have learned from Hesiod, gods created as an evil for men. The final showdown with the role and position of women in Athenian society has been registered on the mythological level, the story about the trial of Orestes, murderer of the mother. The lawsuit was Apollos' argument prevailed, thanks to Athena's casting vote, that the woman just groove in which a man throws seed, and that she does not play a role in inheritance and does not determine the future no man. Orestes is, therefore, solely responsible father as a single parent. However, when you mention all the art and mythology of all, we know that these are fields in which most reflects the state ideology. The role of women in Greek society was hidden, but very important, as today in some areas of the Mediterranean. But what we are currently most interested in is to be very long portrayed women as revised (incomplete) man, and that odjevenost its natural state. It seems that the show (and show), femininity was particularly limited, and that is seen as subversive in a strictly male polis. The fundamental tension that permeates the polis and who is much involved in the construction of Greek mythology, literature and culture in general, the conflict of the individual and authority, and desire and the law. Characteristically, the civil society of equal to the materialism and competitiveness rises ambitious and egotistical individual who lust for the material is transformed into the desire for all the pleasures available to him. Greeks see such a symposium, spree that has become a central ritual of civic life, where the drinking and the competition in elegan Elegance It is generally assumed that the people who attend classical music concerts at Carnegie Hall are all highbrow gray-haireds who are all refinement. If you happen to be one who holds such an opinion, let me share with you this tidbit wherein an ugly brawl erupted two rows back in Section P: -"Hey--hey, hey. Who told you to throw my bag you fucking asshoooole!" -{GASP} -"Don't touch my shit. I'll kill you. Why'd you throw my bag?" -"It was in my way; I was just getting by..." -"So you just throw it? I hope you fucking... leave... you fucking asshoooole!" -"No, YOU! I hope YOU leave!" -"Asshoooole. What?" -"crazy" -"Asshooole." It's embarrassing to watch people use expletives clumsily. Also, have you noticed how people just cling onto the same phrases, repeating them over and over, during these kind of mundane public conflcts? It's as if the rational mind shuts off entirely. Now, this was not nearly as rowdy as the altercation I witnessed after an unsatisfying performance of Tosca at City Opera in which one patron shoved a senior citizen, who ended up tumbling several rows down the balcony. The two had been engaged in a shouting match because the senior citizen though it was rude to leave before curtain call and blocked the patron and his wife from making an exit. Roof of ancient Greek Bath Side, Manavgat, Turkey Side (IPA: /?si?d?/) is one of the best-known classical sites in Turkey, and was an ancient harbour whose name meant pomegranate. Side is a resort town on the southern coast of Turkey, near the villages of Manavgat and Selimiye, 75 km from Antalya) in the province of Antalya. It is located on the eastern part of the Pamphylian coast, which lies about 20 km east of the mouth of the Eurymedon River. Settlers from Cyme (Cum?ans) in Aeolis, an ancient region of northwestern Asia Minor, founded the city in the seventh century BC. Possessing a good harbor for small-craft boats, Side's natural geography made it the most important place in Pamphylia – the region in the south of Asia Minor between Lycia and Cilicia, from the Mediterranean to Mount Taurus. This location made Side one of the most important trade centers in its time. Today, as in yesteryear, the ancient city of Side is situated on a small north-south peninsula about 1 km long and 400 m across. Strabo and Arrianos both record that Side was settled from Cyme (Aeolis), city in Aeolia, a region of western Anatolia. Most probably, this colonization occurred in the seventh century B.C.. According to Arrianos, when settlers from Kyme came to Side, they could not understand the dialect. After a short while, the influence of this indigenous tongue was so great that the newcomers forgot their native Greek and started using the language of Side. Excavations have revealed several inscriptions written in this language. The inscriptions, dating from the third and second centuries B.C., remain undeciphered, but testify that the local language was still in use several centuries after colonization. Another object found in Side excavations, a basalt column base from the seventh century B.C. and attributable to the Neo-Hittites, provides other evidence of the site's early history. The word "side" is Anatolian in origin and means pomegranate. Next to no information exists concerning Side under Lydia and Persian Empire sovereignty. Nevertheless, the fact that Side minted its own coins during the 547 BC while under Persian dominion, shows that it still possessed a great measure of independence. Alexander the Great occupied Side without a struggle in 333 BC. Alexander left only a single garrison behind to occupy the city. This occupation, in turn, introduced the people of Side to Hellenistic culture of the Greek Civilization, which flourished from the fourth century to the first century BC. After Alexander's death, Side fell under the control of one of Alexander's generals, Ptolemy I Soter, who declared himself king of Egypt in 305 BC. The Ptolemaic dynasty controlled Side until it was captured by the Seleucid Empire in the second century BC. Yet, despite these occupations, in the following years of the second century BC, Side managed to preserve some autonomy, grew prosperous, and became an important cultural center. In 190 BC a fleet from the Greek island city-state of Rhodes, supported by Rome and Pergamum, defeated the Seleucid King Antiochus the Great's fleet, which was under the command of the fugitive Carthaginian general, Hannibal. The defeat of Hannibal and Antiochus the Great meant that Side freed itself from the overlordship of the Seleucid Empire. The embarrassing Treaty of Apamea (188 BC) forced Antiochus the Great to abandon all European territories and to cede all of Asia Minor north of the Taurus Mountains to Pergamum. However, the dominion of Pergamum only reached de facto as far as Perga, leaving Eastern Pamphylia semi-free. This led Attalus II Philadelphus to construct a new harbour in the city Attalia (the present Antalya), even though Side already had an important harbour. Between 188 and 36 BC Side minted their own money, tetradrachms showing Nike and a laurel wreath (the sign of victory). In the first century BC, Side reached a peak when the Cilician pirates established their chief naval base and a slave-trade center. The consul Servilius Vatia defeated these brigands in 78 BC and later the Roman general Pompey in 67 BC, bringing Side under the control of the Roman Empire. Side's second peak period started around 2C BC when it established and maintained a good working relationship with the Roman Empire.[2] Emperor Augustus reformed the state administration and placed Pamphylia and Side in the Roman province of Galatia in 25 BC, after the short reign by the king Amyntas of Galatia between 36 and 25 BC. Side began another prosperous period as a commercial center in Asia Minor through its trade in olive oil. Its population grew to 60,000 inhabitants. This period would last well into the third century AD. Side established itself as a slave-trading center in the Mediterranean. Its large commercial fleet engaged in acts of piracy. Wealthy merchants paid for such tributes as public works, monuments, and competitions as well as the games and gladiator fights. The significance of this period for Side is evident in its ruins today. Most of the prese America and Israel Invade Syria Kaboom 1 : The title of the new Hollywood Blockbuster Movie coming out shortly folks to a cinema near you. The plot goes like this: America withdraws it's troops from Iraq and Afghanistan and deploys them by invading Syria at the bequest of it's organgrinder Zionist Israel and starts world war three with Russia who just happen to have a significant mediterranean naval base inside Syria in Tartus. Watch all the action happen live in 3D very shortly on your flat screen. If you miss Kaboom 1 then catch Kaboom 2, the action packed blockbuster sequel in which hawkish Republican America and Israel together invade Iran and starts a second nuclear war with China who already have extensive trade links for oil supply and goods with Iran. Confused? Well don't be. It's all in there, everything you want to see and more. After Kaboom 2 or as some cynical wags in Europe have named it Armageddon 2, there will be no more Kaboom movies or cinemas to watch them in as we'll all be atomised and the world will cease to exist as we now it. Well except for Israel that is. How long more can America economically continue to support their masters- the evil Zionist Israel regime in it's wars of aggression against the displaced Palestine civilians and the arab nations without prostituting and bankrupting itself and leading it's own good citizens into destitution and poverty? Maybe it's already happened and America has finally and terminally been bled dry by it's pimp and left to rot on the pages of history as the Roman Empire was in it's time.It must be remembered that historically, Zionism has only ever supported the strongest empire/world power of the day to fulfill it's own agenda for world domination and ultimate control.Who will be next? China or maybe Russia? The European Union is already under it's thumb and the screw is turning tighter and tighter there now until one day that great continent will also be drained of it's blood and it's citizens sold into bondage, poverty and slavery. Is this destiny? Maybe it is.Can we stop it? I doubt it. Maybe it is all part of a greater plan unfolding beyond any human control. What does appear to be happening is that political and economic world events togther with natural disasters, diseases, droughts and famines are stepping up a pace in this century which can only lead to intervention and ultimately direct confrontation between the world superpowers of USA, China and Russia. WATCH HOLIDAY HEART : WATCH HOLIDAY
WATCH HOLIDAY HEART : MEN'S DIGITAL WATCH Watch Holiday Heart
Watched... Greenmen were all over the place in Greyfriars. I did buy one as a souvenir from a great store on the Royal Mile. Hidden away behind other buildings is one of the gems of Edinburgh's Old Town, the Kirk of the Greyfriars: also known as the Greyfriars Tolbooth and Highland Kirk, or just simply Greyfriars Kirk. Churches are usually amongst the easiest of buildings to find, announcing their presence with a tower or steeple. Not so Greyfriars Kirk, and as a result finding it takes a little detective work. Your starting point should be the circular stone tower of the beautiful new Museum of Scotland building. Looking across the road to its west you see a pub, Greyfriars Bobby's Bar. To the left of the pub as you look at it is a passageway. It leads into Greyfriars Kirkyard. The Kirk itself is a beautifully restored yellowish harled barn of a building, sitting amid a surprisingly large space to have been so successfully hidden away in the heart of the Old Town. Greyfriars was the first church to be built in Edinburgh after the Reformation of 1560, and was built on land granted by Mary Queen of Scots, previously the property of the Franciscan convent in the Grassmarket (hence the name Greyfriars). Building started in 1602, using stone reclaimed from a disused Dominican convent elsewhere in the city, and the kirk opened for business on Christmas Day, 1620. Greyfriars has an important place in Scottish history. In 1638 the National Covenant was signed here, sparking a series of conflicts that were to last for nearly half a century including, arguably, the English Civil War and certainly the "killing time" of the latter half of the 1600s In 1679 the Wars of the Covenant returned to Greyfriars, when the South Yard of the kirkyard was used as a temporary prison for 1200 Covenanters awaiting trial. This must have been a remarkably grim prison, shared with the mausoleums that line both sides of the yard, but it is hard to see how it could have been an especially secure one. Elsewhere in the kirkyard is the Martyrs Monument, erected in 1709 in memory of the Covenanters killed in the 1600s. The rest of the kirkyard contains one of the best collections anywhere of monuments going back to the 1600s. But it is a more recent grave that is one of the most visited in the kirkyard. This is the grave of John Gray, who was an Edinburgh policeman who died of tuberculosis on 15 February 1858 and was buried here. He had a dog, a Skye Terrier called Bobby, and for the following 14 years, until the dog's own death in 1872, Bobby kept watch over John Gray's grave. Hence the name of the pub next to the kirkyard entrance. And hence the statue of a dog in front of the pub. The interior of Greyfriars Kirk is beautiful and spacious. The church has had an accident prone history, and as a result much of what you see inside is younger than you might expect. For example Greyfriars originally had a tower at its west end. However, the town council used it as a gunpowder store, and in 1718 the inevitable happened. When the west end of the church was rebuilt, the tower was omitted, though space was provided for two separate congregations. In 1845 fire destroyed much of the older part of the church and badly damaged the newer part. The rebuilding took until 1857 to complete, and included the first addition of stained glass windows to any Scottish parish church since the Reformation nearly three hundred years earlier. Robert Louis Stevenson's 1897 observations on Greyfriars in Edinburgh: Picturesque Notes can be read here. It was only with a major restoration between 1931 and 1938 that the two halves of Greyfriars Kirk were reunited under a magnificent new ceiling of Californian redwood. Little Corellas, Kakadu National Park The Little Corella, Cacatua sanguinea, also known as the Bare-eyed Cockatoo, is a white cockatoo native to Australia and southern New Guinea. The Little Corella grows to 36 to 39 cm in length and congregates in flocks of up to several thousand birds, which often include many Galahs. The bird generally roosts in trees overnight, and flies off to feed in the early morning with an almost deafening screeching. It mostly feeds on the ground, eating seeds including cereal crops such as wheat and barley. It is so common that it has become something of a pest throughout much of Australia, and can be destructive to the trees in which it perches, by chewing the bark off smaller twigs. It was known as Birdirra among the Yindjibarndi people of the central and western Pilbara. They would keep them as pets, or traditionally cook and eat them. The downy feathers are used in traditional ceremonies and dances where they adorn head and armbands.[1] A cockatoo is any of the 21 species belonging to the bird family Cacatuidae. Along with the Psittacidae (the true parrots) and the Strigopidae (the large New Zealand parrots), they make up the parrot order Psittaciformes. Placement of the cockatoos as a separate family is fairly undisputed, although many aspects of the other living lineages of parrots are unresolved. The family has a mainly Australasian distribution, ranging from the Philippines and the eastern Indonesian islands of Wallacea to New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Australia. The name cockatoo originated from the Malay name for these birds, kaka(k)tua (either from kaka "parrot" + tuwah, or "older sister" from kakak "sister" + tua "old"). Cockatoos are instantly recognisable by their showy crests and curved bills. On average they are larger than other parrots; however, the Cockatiel, the smallest cockatoo species, is a small bird. Their plumage is generally less colourful than that of other parrots, being mainly white, grey, or black, and often with coloured features in the crest, cheeks, or tail. The genus Cacatua comprises 11 species of white plumaged cockatoos, including the corellas, a group of smaller cockatoos. Closely related to them are the pink and grey Galah and the pink and white Major Mitchell's Cockatoo. The five species of the genus Calyptorhynchus are large black coloured cockatoos. The remaining three species—the large black-plumaged Palm Cockatoo, the mainly grey Gang-gang Cockatoo, and the small mainly grey Cockatiel—are related to the other cockatoos through early and unclear evolutionary branches. The diet of the cockatoos is composed of seeds, tubers, corms, fruit, flowers and insects. They often feed in large flocks, particularly when ground-feeding. Cockatoos are monogamous and nest in tree hollows. Some cockatoo species have been adversely affected by habitat loss, particularly the loss of suitable nesting hollows when large, mature trees are cleared; conversely, some species have adapted well to human changes and are considered agricultural pests. Cockatoos are popular birds in aviculture, but their needs are difficult to cater for. However, the Cockatiel is much easier to keep as a pet, and is by far the most popular. White cockatoos are more commonly found in captivity than black cockatoos. Some species are threatened by the largely illegal trade in wild-caught parrots. White Cockatoos, Kakadu National park A cockatoo is any of the 21 species belonging to the bird family Cacatuidae. Dog Rape Okay, so this is the first image in a series that were taken May 20th 2009 at the dogrun we frequent with Betsy here in Queens. A couple of morons thought it was a good idea to try and breed their pitbulls in the smaller run which wasn't being used at the time. The hispanic guy in this picture is the owner of the female pitbull. While the black guy (who can be seen in the other photos) was the owner of two male pitbulls, the one captured here and another white one that he left in the larger run. Let me first start out by asking, who would think it's a smart idea to bring two dogs to a public park in an effort to breed them? I'm not going to even mention the fact that it's a breed that gets a bad wrap, why? Due to idiot owners like these two right here. The female clearly did not want to be mounted. She was running away and when the male persisted she'd turn around to try and grab a bite of him. I watched in horror as I told my boyfriend how disgusted I was. I couldn't believe this was how they would try to breed dogs. Not to mention pitbulls are one of the highest percentage of dogs that are put down in the city. I suggested how easy it would be to go online and find the correct way to do it. Perhaps even get a muzzle so the male dog wouldn't get injured. But his owner didn't seem to care and the hispanic gentleman assured him his female pit wouldn't get a good bite. My boyfriend suggested that I mind my business and not get involved. I have a problem not keeping my mouth shut when I see messed up stuff happening... and living in NYC that can get you into trouble. When I saw the hispanic guy grab his dog by the collar and hold her still so the other dog could mount her, I just felt really mad. I mean, I know she's just a dog but as a girl I was disgusted by the fact that his poor dog is going to him seeking protection and he's forcing her to mate with a dog that her senses are telling her is an INFERIOR specimen with whom she clearly does NOT want to reproduce. I silently went over with my camera and tried to make the men uncomfortable by taking photos. Believe it or not this didn't stop them. It wasn't until another dog owner spoke up and asked if they'd read the rules of the dog run. One rule is male dogs over 9 months must be neutered. Another rule is all spiked and pronged collars must be removed. But of course these two didn't know because they have no respect for the general public or the safety of their own dogs, so why would they bother to read rules they aren't going to pay mind anyway? I guess you can't expect much from a guy who wears his shades on the back of his head. Day Sixty Five Ah, Wow, I was making an odd face while taking this pictureeee. I have been having one of the laziest days of my life. I have been laying around and the hardest decision I had today was to order pizza online or by phone. Haha, It feels so good to relax again. I have band practice again tomorrow! Thank goodness it's just from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM! At least it will be a lot less hot and a lot less sunny! I watched the most recent episode of Pretty Little Liars, and hmm.. I have read all the books, and don't worry I'm not going to spoil anything. But I still LOVE the show, even though it's tons different from the books. I am getting a new mattress tomorrow! I am so excited, because the mattress I have now, well my mom had it before I was even born, so.. It's been a while, plus it has started to hurt my back and it's really uncomfortable! But I'm excited to sleep in it tomorrow night! Heck, I'm excited to sleep anytime. I just love sleep. Today, I tried to take a Mad Men-esque picture by posing by a chair and wow, it just did NOT work out, I need a tripod, or.. well I just need to find my current one..
