Went to cover Peace Day event today (in case you did not know, Sept 21 is Peace Day). Having a crazy busy weekend. Last night while on an assignment I ran into two friends that I have not seen for a long time. We were best friends about 8 years ago and then saw each other again four years later and lost contact again. It was nice to catch up. They were friends with me and the hubs 8 years ago when we first dated.
They both graduated college and moved away (they are twins and are living in separate cities for the first time) anyway, we share the same birth date.

Also, our new visitor will not leave. Tazzy has been hanging out in front of our house. I feed her every morning and at night when I feed our pets and so maybe she thinks she is part of the family? Well, Ballsy saw her through the window yesterday and freaked the heck out. He was making noises I have never ever heard a cat make before. Not to mention he kept punching the window. Reminded me of a drunk college student.

We also saw Mirrors last night at like 2 in the morning after having a drink at a nearby restaurant. Not a good idea!
Lots of plot-holes but a cool idea. Well, I only saw about half the movie because the entire time I was covering my eyes and watching it through my fingers :) I have to reming myself not to watch scary movies because they end up giving me high anxiety afterwards. I could not sleep for a while because my chest felt like it was going to explode. I guess stress is making my anxiety rise.

Jellyfish are like watching a a gentle ballet of movement. So graceful. These jelly fish were about 4" in size (as apposed to the smaller blue ones in the image prior to this).

These were difficult to photograph. I have gained such a respect for how it is done. I did have success finally when I used a gell filter on my flash that matched the colour of the jellyfish. In this case, I used a pale amber gell over the flash (a free "demo" pack gives the perfect size to hand-hold over the flash lens). It popped the colours of the jelly fish. The after-processing to get rid of glass reflection and marks, as well as floating particles (some of which were microscopic babies) was also a challenge.

One of the main Surma / Suri customs is stick fighting. This ritual and sport is called Donga or Sagenai (Saginay). Donga is both the name of the sport and the stick, whereas sagenai is the name of the stick-fighting session. Stick fighting is central in Suri culture. In most cases, stick fighting is a way for warriors to find girlfriends, it can also be a way to settle conflicts. On this occasion men show their courage, their virility and their resistance to pain, to the young women. The fights are held between Suri villages, and begin with 20 to 30 people on each side, and can end up with hundreds of warriors involved. Suri are famous for stick fighting, but they are not the only ones to respect such a custom, as the neighbor tribe, the Mursi, also practice these traditional fights
The day before the sagenai, fighters have to purge themselves. They do it by drinking a special preparation, called dokai, which is made of the bark of a special tree, which is mixed with water. After taking it, warriors make themselves vomiting the drink. The water is supposed to bring with it many of the body’s impurities. After this ritual they don’t eat until the following morning. Warriors walk kilometers to come fighting at Sagenai, which takes place in a clearing. They stop when crossing a river in order to wash themselves, before decorating their bodies for the fight. They decorate themselves by sliding the fingers full of clay on the warrior’s bodies. This dressing up and decoration is meant to show their beauty and virility and thus catch the women’s attention. The phallic shape ending the sticks contributes to that virile demonstration.
Fighters arrive on the Donga field all together, carrying the strongest man,dancing and singing. Some fighters wear colourful headdresses sometimes with feathers on it, and also knee-protectors. But most of them use no protection at all and fight completely naked in order to show their bravery. They also wear strings of decorative coloured beads around their necks given by the girls and waist, but their genitals are most of the time uncovered and they are barefoot.
All of them get a chance to fight one on one, against someone from the other side. In the beginning each fighter looks for an opponent of the same stature, and exchanges a few held back blows with him in order to test him. If both fighters feel they have found a match, they suddendly throw themselves into the fight, hitting ferocious fast strokes with their sticks. If one of the warriors knocked out or puts paid to his opponent, he immediately declares himself the winner. Sagenai consists in qualifying rounds, each winner fighting the winner of a previous fight, until two finalists are left.
It is strictly forbidden to hit a man when he is down on the ground. During these fights there are referees present to make sure all rules are being followed. Many stick fights end within the first couple of hits. Nevertheless the fights are really violent, and it is quite usual to see men bleeding. Stick fighting has proven to be dangerous because people have died from being hit in the stomach. Loosing an eye or a leg during the fight is quite common, although it is strictly forbidden for a fighter to kill his opponent, and if a fighter gets killed during the fight, his opponent and all his family are banned from the village for life.
For the other locals, especially teenagers, sagenai is a great outing. Girls watch the fights, but it is also the occasion to check out the men, and to meet in order to chat or even gossip.
At the end of the fights, the winners point their phallic sticks in direction of the girls they want to date with, if the girl put a necklace around the stick, it means she is willing to date the champion. Sometimes a group of girls is presented to the champion, who previously which one of them would date the him.
Since stick fighting draws a large audience, it becomes dangerous. For the audience the risk of being hit, is not to be underestimated. Shooting can also easily break out and this seems to be the new trend for young Suri men using AK-47 (Kalashnikov) instead of sticks. The risk of being shot is all the higher as spectators and participants drink gesso, a thick local beer made from fermented maize, and are often quite drunk during the Sagenai.
It’s quite common to see men carrying weapons which are part of the daily life. Their remote homeland has always been a place of traditional rivalries with the neighbouring tribes such as the Bume (Nyangatom) or the Toposa. who regurlarly team up to raid the Suri’s cattle. These fights, and even sometimes battles, have become quite bloody since automatic firearms have become available from the parties in the Sudanese Civil War. This conflict has pushed neighboring tribes into Suri’s land and is a constant competition to keep and protect their territory and their cattle. A battl

It was in the way I felt I was watching my life from outside my body. As if my soul had evaporated outward in my breath and clothed me, not yet ready to let go. Only a child but I still stood there with arms protecting his dying, fragility and a heart calling out to her self induced addiction. A family that was broken and me, a child lost among every tear I felt I shouldn’t shed. My feet were numb to the balancing act between reality and vulnerability but the only constant entwined itself into the empty spot where my soul had once sat. Trust. Trust in a believing faith. The same and only faith that reminded me that my body was meant to breathe.

I heard an amazing testimony and story from a lovely 14 year old girl named Maddie who I will tag. At a young age her father was diagnosed with a fatal disease. Her mother was an alcoholic. From the ages of 5 to 12 she found herself filling that role and being the nurse and protector of her family. Her story made me cry in a way I can’t even explain but it wasn’t from the sadness, it was her view on it. Something so powerful and strong.
Through everything she’s been through this is what she had told me, “My dad was given one year to live. He lived for six.” She also mentioned that bad things happen to good people so they can realize how strong they are.
We’ve all been through something or will go through something devastating, something that will make us question life, question god, question everything. But through this beautiful girl and through a passage that caught my attention I realized something incredible:
“The Lord God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s feet, And he will make me walk on my high hills. To the Chief musician with my stringed instruments.” Habakkuk 3:19 (I really encourage you to read all of the hymn of faith , so from 3:17-19 in the same book)
So, here we are with our feet like deer. With that God is training us and preparing us to walk that path or mountain or place that God has planned for you. But here’s the thing, he doesn’t give us those deer’s feet automatically, sometimes we need to slip and stumble to really understand. Just like Maddie, she faced something heart breaking yet she was able to understand that God was building her up to be someone and do something so powerful. Where her story will change others lives and give hope in a place of despair.
I really think maybe we should look at those stumbling steps as gifts from God as hard as it may be. He’s showing us that we can’t do it without him.
I know from my experiences that I am happiest, strongest, and most full of life when I am close to God. I haven’t had a bad week and my depression hasn’t affected me at all because I’m asking God for strength and putting my faith in him. He will give me deer’s feet and I will be able to do his will no matter the difficulty of the task.
Like the writing says, that faith…my God…he’s the only thing that reminds me I was meant to breathe.
We’re all meant to live for a reason, whether you are like Maddie’s father in the sense that you will change lives because of losing or giving your own life. I just know that I don’t want to spend my time facing struggles and living for nothing when I can overcome them and live to do something worthwhile and life changing.

The Pico House is a historic building in Los Angeles, California, dating from its days as a small town in Southern California. Located on 430 North Main Street, it sits across the old Los Angeles Plaza from Olvera Street and El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument. Its geographic coordinates are 34°03?23.63?N 118°14?22.07?W.

Pio Pico, a successful businessman who was the last Mexican Governor of Alta California, ordered construction of a luxury hotel in the growing town. The architect was Ezra F. Kysor, who also designed the Cathedral of Saint Vibiana, and it was constructed between 1869 and 1870. The resulting Italianate three story, 33-room hotel, dubbed Pico House (or Casa de Pico) was the most extravagant and lavish hotel in Southern California, and its opening was cause for much celebration. It had a total of nearly eighty rooms, large windows, a small interior court, and a grand staircase. In the days of the hotel's primacy the courtyard featured a fountain and an aviary of exotic birds. The structure forms three sides of a trapezoid of which the open end immediately abuts the adjacent Merced Theatre, thus forming the courtyard. The back of the hotel faces Sanchez Street, where the large carriage entrance can still be seen.

Its time in the spotlight did not last very long. By 1876 the Southern Pacific Railroad had linked the city with the rest of the country and more residents and businessman began pouring in. Pio Pico himself started having financial troubles, and lost the hotel to the San Francisco Savings and Loan Company. The business center of the city began to move south and, by 1900, the building began to decline. After decades as a shabby lodging house, it finally passed into the hands of the State of California in 1953, and it now belongs to the El Pueblo de Los Angeles State Historic Monument. Parts of this building were renovated in 1981 and 1992. The ground floor is occasionally used for exhibits and other events.
The Pico House is currently listed as a California Historical Landmark (No. 159) and a National Historic Landmark as a part of the Los Angeles Plaza Historic District (NPS-72000231).
The Pico House is featured prominently in the Star Trek: The Next Generation two part episode Time's Arrow, filling in as turn of the century San Francisco.

The back end of Pico House is also used in the hit TV show The Mentalist. It is used as the CBI HQ and is frequently shown during the show. Pico House was also used, in August 2009, as the shoot location for JLS's video for their single, Everybody In Love. On January 7, 2011, the building was featured on Travel Channel's Ghost Adventures with Kane Hodder, and Rick McCullum.

I am not 100% sure of how to organise the voting to skank the public of maximum cash but the basic concept solid.

Contestants will be coerced into believing they are animals using techniques such as sleep deprivation, white noise and humiliation with dogs. They will then wrestle for cash prizes near famous locations; The pilot episode's final round will take place in a cage slung from the underside of the Eiffel Tower.

The contestants will be selected from a pool of pitiful celebrities and laser cutting should definitely feature somewhere.

FAILURE

This was not done out of necessity, either for sustenance or self preservation. This was not a sport as both parties did not know they were involved in the deadly game,
and the odds were impossibly stacked against the nobler creature, despite its superior strength, sight, hearing,
sense of smell and natural grace.

This required no great skill, no great courage.

And it is highly ironic and absurd that an invasive, cancerous
non self regulating species of over 6 billion should claim the need to 'control' the population of other species, even as they kill 150 species a day, and utterly devastate the life supporting
ecological net which supports themselves and all other things
on this planet.

Don't think I haven't asked myself "Who am I to judge?"
I am me, that's all I can say. I'm not judging primarily. I'm thinking and feeling.

I could quote the bible and the commandment "Thou shalt not kill" and say 'you're going to Hell"but I don't really believe in Hell, except the one we create with our own thoughts and actions here. And anyway, someone would just quote back at me our right to 'dominion' over the creatures of the Earth as quoted in the bible. Although I don't see how we can 'rule' over all the creatures of the Earth if they are all dead, and if eventually our own species is dead.

Even if you believe that the bible is the word of God, we are still left with many choices of interpretation. Furthermore, the bible and any other text claiming to have come from a deity above originally came from a man who 'heard' the deity. Why should I listen to the words of a long dead man who claims God spoke to him 2000 years ago, if God spoke to me yesterday? And told me very clearly "this is wrong, this is sad, this is contrary to my will." Unfortunately, I can't definitively say I heard the voice of God or angels, the voice in my head is my own, as far as I can tell, but who knows.

I consider the Bear to be my spirit animal, so it may very well be the spirit of the Bear trying to come through in these messages. I don't know of anyone who could claim that the Bear was happy or agreed with what happened Saturday, no matter how you rationalize it. If the bear had spoken and begged for his life, I'm sure he would not be dead now. At the very least the hunters would have thought some idiot was out in the woods in a bear suit, or that they were on some sort of Candid Camera episode. In any case, I claim the right to speak for the bear.

After taking my dogs out for a walk and looking down the hill at everything living far and near, nature shrouded in fog, and mountains basking in the sunshine, small figures of humans and other animals moving down below, I think of my father and the way he looked when he died. He looked dead. Empty. Devoid of the animating force of spirit.

Witnessing the death of a human being in this way illuminates the miracle of life in a way nothing else can. As amazing as seeing the birth of a human or other animal, something suddenly there, alive where there was nothing a moment before. So too is death amazing. We see something alive, full of spirit and consciousness turn before our eyes, into a THING. I couldn't have been more amazed if my father had turned into a chair or a table at that moment. The difference between living and dead is that profound.

The point is, I'm not trying to take anything from the hunter. I'm trying to give him something.
The miracle of nature lies in the life it contains. The fact that spirit inhabits things, and gives them the power of motion, of thought, of desire, of happiness and sadness. The miracle is that the inanimate becomes animated. Like Pinnochio changing from wood to flesh. The miracle to me in nature is the love implicit in life. To watch a living animal, and know that it is purely different than me and yet kindred in an amazing mysterious way. I can never know the depths of it's mind and soul, except by observing it, and feeling the energy it puts forth.

To watch an animal in the wild and to share its freedom and enjoy its aliveness is a gift of incalculable value, a true miracle. To kill the animal is to take that particular miracle from the world forever. But it is not the bear in this case that loses. That spirit will go on, will return from whence it came, wherever that is. Perhaps to reenter the world somewhere else. It is the hunter that really loses in this instance. He was in the presence of a miracle. A living creature, mysterious and free. And he took the gift away from himself, leaving only a cold dead thing. A large piece of meat and hair. It is the hunter who lost. The bear is free and always was. It is the hunter who is enslaved.

97/365 {Saturday}

Woke up at crack of dawn and met Rachel for our 5k test run through the Virginia Highlands. We ran the path of the June 6th 5k race we're participating in. It wasn't bad at all. Well, there were many hills and I wasn't able to run straight through without stopping a few times, but anyhoo...it was great and I have 4 more weeks to prepare for it. Came back to Trent's and slept for 3 hours. Went to Trader Joe's and did some shopping and bought some delicious foods. Came back and Trent, Shane and I played Scrabble. Then we watched 6 episodes of the L Word cuz I was trying to finish up Season 1..which we did. It was soooo good. Then I played with Trent's iphone and checked out Rose Cousin's music on Pandora! neat. I didn't feel like snapping a photo of me cuz I was ready for bed. So you get to see Rose's album cover via iphone. ;)

Wrist Computer Concept Question

Those of you who have read Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy will know what I mean when I say wristpad.
For those who don't, a wristpad is a wrist-worn computer formfactor.
This design consists fo a combination flexible touchscreen/battery (each exist), and a small control module containing the processors, a battery, a small camera, a laser pointer, and a few white LEDs. The display would wrap around most of the wrist, clasping on the side farthest from the control module. The computer would be ambidextrous, displaying the watch on one side fo the wrist, and other information on the other. The processor would not have to be very powerful, because only a few applications could run on such a limited screen resolution. It could, however, be used as a music player, supporting mp3, wav, aac, ogg, wma, and flac. Audible, too, probably. The device could aso serve as a bluetooth extension to a phone, or mabye have a phonen built in. Either way, it could use a cellular connection to grab and display information like stocks, weather, launch time, maybe RSS. Full-page web browsing is a definite nogo. Leave that to your lectern.
Input would be through the touchscreen and mabye the bezels around the ends of the control package. Also probably a button at the non-camera/light end of the control module, but that might be where the earbuds enter.
Hmm. Designing Human Interface Devices is hard.
