Park Place - 666 Burrard Street (A Jewel)

Park Place - 666 Burrard Street (A Jewel)

Yes, the address really is 666. This building was finalized in April of 1984 where my company took up residency on the 33rd and 32nd floor. I was part of the interior office design committee and had the priviledge of visting the top floors while under construction. We donned hard hats and rode the elevator up to the top from the outside of the building, slung on construction cables.

I had many a magnificant view from the top of the building watching the fog roll across the lower mainland while the top of the building would be in the early morning sunrise. Many times at night in the summertime, I would watch the fireworks for sea festival exploding over English Bay.

At that time, the pink marble boardroom table was a mere $40,000.00 and was about 25 ft long - the days of extravanza and high priced orignal artwork graced the office walls. It was a high tech office in those days and now it is 24 years old and still a beauty. My office faced east and I would often arrive downtown before 7am - enjoying the magnficant sunrises....often working until sunset.

During Expo 1986, the magnificant Concord from France streamed across the Vancouver Skyline and circled this magnificant pink tower shaking every window in the building. It was unbelieveable.

Upon merging with another company we had to move out of our beautiful tower and squeeze into the Vancouver Board of Trade tower with the company acquiring us. I then was involved in liquidating and auctioning the furnishings, and the magnificant boardroom table was too big to remove from the building and was dismantled and the marble sold in piecemeal. It was then I negotiated with a few movie companies to film movies and a couple of Televison series in this beautiful space until this under utilized floor space could be undertaken by another company when the expensive lease was due to expire. A cool building then and it still is 24 years later.

I loved working in this tower - the views were breathtaking!

Olympic Opening Ceremony on the Big Screens

Olympic Opening Ceremony on the Big Screens

Avoiding steep ticket prices to the Vancouver Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony in BC Place, my friends and I joined the majority of Vancouverites and visitors on the streets. Every bar, restaurant and Olympic Pavilion seemed to be showing the ceremony on big TV screens. Livecity Yaletown in David Lam Park was at capacity so we caught the athletes’ entrances, Nelly Furtado performing with Bryan Adams and more on TV at The Hub bar before heading down to False Creek. Across the water, the Athletes’ Village and Vancouver’s globe-shaped Science World were gloriously lit up.
As we passed the backstage area of BC Place, dancers still in costume were streaming out ready to party. A surreal case of art and reality colliding. After stopping for a curry at the Plaza of Nations food stalls, we continued along False Creek to Ontario House at Concord Place. Unforgettable ‘wow’ moments followed as, on the huge outdoor screens we watched Wayne Gretzky light the Olympic cauldron, just as to our left, an enormous burst of red fireworks exploded into the night sky above BC Place. Quite literally, the city went wild.

123 on the 4th / / star trek band

story time: apparently, parade route convention holds that you should watch the floats and the bands and applaud politely while making quiet conversation about the weather. at 123, this convention is blithely ignored, as the entire porch is a flood of cries for bands to "play for us" or "stop and play" and for the people on the floats to "flex" or the people driving the diesels pulling the floats to hit the airhorn.

this band might have been from orlando. not only did they stop and play for us: they formed a tight semicircle around the porch, were all dressed like counselor troi and really blared before moving on.

Regimental game of broom-i-loo

Regimental game of broom-i-loo

CFB Shilo Manitoba Canada 17 March, 2011

Regimental game of broom-i-loo

MWO Don Askeland gets tackled by a fellow soldier during the regimental game of broom-i-loo.

Broom-i-loo is the traditional Regimental game played annually on Regimental Day, the
17th of March. The intent of Broom-i-loo is to build spirit de corps and to foster cohesion in a sport that is unique to the PPCLI. Normally each battalion conduct a company round robin tournament played by all ranks, followed by the Officers versus the Senior NCOs game. The Officers/Senior NCOs game is the highlight of the day and is the one event that usually takes place, even if other related activities cannot occur. The officers and senior NCOs are the recognized experts by virtue of their longer service. They are entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring that our customs and traditions are maintained in the spirit they were intended. In order to ensure that the game is played fairly and in the spirit it is meant to be, and to ensure adequate measures are in place to prevent unnecessary injury, a set of rules has been developed.

Watch out for games, the actor's part, the speech planned, known, given,

Watch out for games, the actor's part, the speech planned, known, given,

Admonitions to a Special Person

Watch out for power,
for its avalanche can bury you,
snow, snow, snow, smothering your mountain.

Watch out for hate,
it can open its mouth and you'll fling yourself out
to eat off your leg, an instant leper.

Watch out for friends,
because when you betray them,
as you will,
they will bury their heads in the toilet
and flush themselves away.

Watch out for intellect,
because it knows so much it knows nothing
and leaves you hanging upside down,
mouthing knowledge as your heart
falls out of your mouth.

Watch out for games, the actor's part,
the speech planned, known, given,
for they will give you away
and you will stand like a naked little boy,
pissing on your own child-bed.

Watch out for love
(unless it is true,
and every part of you says yes including the toes) ,
it will wrap you up like a mummy,
and your scream won't be heard
and none of your running will end.

Love? Be it man. Be it woman.
It must be a wave you want to glide in on,
give your body to it, give your laugh to it,
give, when the gravelly sand takes you,
your tears to the land. To love another is something
like prayer and can't be planned, you just fall
into its arms because your belief undoes your disbelief.

Special person,
if I were you I'd pay no attention
to admonitions from me,
made somewhat out of your words
and somewhat out of mine.
A collaboration.
I do not believe a word I have said,
except some, except I think of you like a young tree
with pasted-on leaves and know you'll root
and the real green thing will come.

Let go. Let go.
Oh special person,
possible leaves,
this typewriter likes you on the way to them,
but wants to break crystal glasses
in celebration,
for you,
when the dark crust is thrown off
and you float all around
like a happened balloon.

Anne Sexton

Walking down a street

Walking down a street

I can see you and me perfectly.
I don’t know you.
Stranger.
Walking on opposite sides of the street.
Through the corner of my eye I glance over to the left.
You turn your head to the right.
Then mine follows till it meets your eye.
A small stare, eyes of two different individuals.
We visit each others thought waves for a moment.
Then continue walking on opposite sides of the street.

We see something.
Down the street we are walking upon.
It is a large round object, with many colors.
It seems like its rolling in place.
We glance over around the same moment.
Nod.
And Fasten our pace.

Now I’m breathing a little harder, my heart pounding more than before.
Curious,
We are both curious.
We are marching towards something that could hold so many ideas, answers, or questions.
We really don’t know what lies ahead.
The street seems to stretch, will we ever get there?
We both stay on our sides of the street.
Yours is the left, mine is the right.
But we both seem to agree, we can’t leave this side of the street.

The large object seems to be coming in clearer,
An enormous pearl, is what it resembles to me.
The sunlight reflects the pastel colors from the round ball.
You think it looks like stone, a soft white stone.
We’ll see.

I can still see you, we are still moving at the same pace.
Maybe we should go a little faster?
I mean how curious are you anyways?
I want to run.
So do you.
We start running as we keep looking over to see if it is okay with one another.
It is.

We reach the end of the street.
The object is sitting in the park across from us.
The size of it has seemed to be smaller.
It was enormous before.

We look both ways and cross the street to the park.
There are two pathways,
both leading to the round object.
And one path directly down the middle, straight to it.

Now we are both experiencing confusion.
What do we choose?
Then the round object starts to grow.
Because now we are standing side by side.
Once more we look at each other.
Can’t decide.
I make a bold move, and step towards the right pathway.
The object starts to shrink.

I pull my foot off the path way and stand there.
You scratch your head.
Five minutes pass by.
As we stand there we watch the beautiful round object breathe.
It grows, and then it shrinks.
We still don’t know what to do.

You don’t look at me this time.
You turn around, and start heading towards the street.
I look at you, and stare at your back.
I don’t know you.
I turn around back towards the pearl.
It’s gone.

I walk down the pathway that lead straight to the round object.
And as I got closer to where it had laid, I saw something.
A puddle.
I looked down, saw my reflection.
And then I looked passed it.
Then I saw something at the bottom.
And it was beautiful.

Two pearls.

And when I glanced back at my reflection, I didn’t see me.
It was someone else. Someone I’ve never known.
It was you.

Seiko stopwatch 88-5051

Seiko stopwatch 88-5051

I collect vintage Seiko watches.

My speciality is handwind, no-date dress watches, but I have a couple of classic divers - 6105, 3609, etc. Most people collect the divers, and prices reflect this, of course.

My latest purchase is this stopwatch dating from, I believe, August 1964 (it could be '74, however). It's in the original box.

It's your basic 30-minute stop watch. One push sets it running, the next push stops the hand, the next push resets the count.

This shot features the back of the case (it's one of those Seiko collector things!). The caseback still has most of it's protective backing - a light blue film that looks like it was sprayed on. It looks a lot less messy in real life. I could scratch it all off with my thumbnail if I was so inclined, but I'm not. I'm trying to keep it as original as possible.

After a year of talking about how Battlestar Galactica is better than Lost and one of the best written shows on TV next to Veronica Mars, I was finally able to prove it. Dinah consented to watch the mini series, after which I immediately put in episode 1 of the series, entitled "33", as the ships must jump every 33 minutes or the Cylons will catch them. We start the episode on Day 3, after everyone has been awake for 3 days trying to escape. Yes, it's that good. Needless to say, it took 2 days but we got all caught up to last week's awesome episode. Dinah is officially caught up through 1.5 seasons. And she loved it. Like there was any doubt.

On a side note, 2 weeks ago TiVo was messing with me and I MISSED the 1st Battlestar episode of the new run! I was PISSED. So I called up my super-computer friends and asked about downloading the show from secret online servers and all that. I got 2 great answers. One actually WAS a detailed account on how to find shows on servers online. The second? Buy it from itunes. I can do that? Yes. Yes I can. $2. Sweet. And then I plugged my iBook into the widescreen TV and was actually able to watch it in 47" glory. Wow. Handy little thing, that.

Feel Good Shit

Feel Good Shit

I volunteered to be the easter bunny at my best friends daughters birthday party. I think it was her b-day... dont kill me. Anyhow, It was typical Tim... I'll do it, I dont mind making an ass of myself. This picture was right after i put the costume on. I have to say... I dont want kids, but this day was one of the most awesome unexpected days of my life. When we got to the party all the kids thought I was the real easter bunny. I gave them all hugs, helped them hunt for eggs, picked them up and took pictures. This one little boy walked up to me. He said "You Forgot" and I said "What"... he repeated... Finally he said "You forgot to hug me" That shit broke my heart. I picked up that poor little kid and gave him the biggest hug ever, took pictures with him and went on to help him and all the other kids gather easter eggs. That little boy i forgot to hug wanted to share half his eggs he found with me... which continued to break my heart. The pureness and generosity of children can teach all of us a lesson... I bet thats the last thing you expected to read when you saw this picture. My friends daughter was petrified of me too, but she warmed up after a little while. Maegan, when you're an adult... if this is still online. Remember it was uncle Tim that rocked that party out. Maybe I can get your first case of beer too... If Jason doesnt beat me to the punch. Kidding... your a girl. I'll buy your yet to be born brother a case and you can watch him get in trouble... or just have everyone think he's that stupid. Your dad knows what i'm talking about.

I can say this life is
Much better today
Everything turns right if
Wrong gets in the way

Yeah I've got the feeling
It's something I find hard to explain
See I wasn't looking

But girl I'm glad I fell in your way

Then she says oh boy, oh boy
Count your lucky stars

Count what you've been wishing for
Oh boy, oh boy
Count the life you lead
Count how you are now adored

I can say the sun
Burns much brighter today
I can see my path though

Clouds darken my way
Yeah I've got this feeling
It's something I find hard to explain
See I wasn't looking
But girl I'm glad I fell in your way

Then she says oh boy, oh boy
Count your lucky stars

Count what you've been wishing for
Oh boy, oh boy
Count the life you lead
Count how you are now adored

She said she was tired of

Watching me just wilt and bleed
She said I'm like Jesus
I save those who do believe
Do you, do you believe?

Then she says oh boy, oh boy
Count your lucky stars

Count what you've been wishing for
Oh boy, oh boy
Count the life you lead
Count how you are now adored

Wild Friday Night

Wild Friday Night

I usually go to the gym on Friday night.

Instead I'm being lazy because some lady in a Lexus decided she didn't really have to stop on her own and decided that she should use the back of Wendy's new vehicle to help her with her stopping.

So, I'm a bit stiff. I suspect it's because I'm old. I don't believe Wendy is stiff. She's younger than I.

Or? It could be because she's taller and I'm not as tall. So, I got more of the impact. Lower and closer to the ground or something. Physics and stuff.

Or? It could be because I've already been jostled and thrown about in lots of other accidents and bumps and benders and now my body is just all out of whack and ready to go stiff when it gets jolted that way.

Or? It could be that the lady hit more on my side of the vehicle. More physics.

Or? it could be because we didn't go to McD's and get hot fudge sundaes after this.

Could be a combo of all of that. All I know is my back and my shoulders feel a bit stiff and I'm a big wuss and I'm home instead of the gym.

So there.

Bring on the band!

One of my favorite parts of Friday night high school football is the halftime show. I know how hard these kids work all week for just 10 minutes of show time.

This was our first real game so it's our first time to see the 2010 marching band. I was impressed!

I'll tag everyone I want to in a sec. And add the tag >> lol.

25 things about me!

4. I honest to god own a horse....lol, his name is Colby and he is a failed racing horse and I love him.
5. I am one of the silliest Harry Potter fans you could meet who still has a good head on her shoulders. I don't carry a wand with me at all times to duel my friends but I do have several customs and costume wands <3
6. On the same note of Harry Potter geekery, I can recite the movies 1-4 word for word right down to the inflection of their voices and music cues. OK maybe I am obsessed ;D
7. I just lost a great amount of weight that I put on after getting a 4inch crack in my head 4 years ago this July.
8. My skull was the first real bone (not including countless toes and fingers) that I have broken.

Day Ten

Day Ten

Today has been.. pretty boring. I don't know why but I really LOVE this picture.

Anyways, Ben and Haley are coming over today, I'm excited. We are watching the Hangover, and apparently Ben is goingto show us, "REPO THE GENETIC OPERA". I have no idea if the title is supposed to be capitalized.. but everytime he texts me about it he uses all caps. :P

Haha, I'm in a pretty meloncholy mood right now. Some stupid people are flooding my homepage with their lovey-dovey moments and it's sickening. It's not that I don't love, love. It's just that, when it's them two. I hate it.
Now I feel mean. :( I'm sorry.

Anyways. I'm awfully hungry. I haven't eaten anything today. I might have some nutellla on bread or something. Potatoe chips.. Salad. I have no idea.

Tomorrow should be awesome! I'm going with Haley to see Toy Story 3!

It's less than a week til I go to Vegas! I will try my best to upload a picture everyday! It may have to be from my phone, if I can't hook it up to my computer.

I really despise cough drops. I'm not going to lie, they always make my throat feel better but they are a pain to eat, they're just.. so disgusting!

Anyways, I'm currently listening to Damien Rice, I love him(?)/them(?) I'm not going to lie I have no idea if he's like a soloist with guest singers, or a band. Anyways. I love it.

Time to go volunteer at the library again! Hopefully today will be more lively and fun!
