Coptic art from the 13th through the 15th century is well preserved in the Church of St. Anthony. The plan of the chapel is rectangular, the east end being extended into a pentagonal apse. Its interior dimensions are as follows: - Length 91 feet, width 30 feet, the height from the ground line to the ridge of the root is 84 feet, to the summit of the vane 130 feet. The area is subdivided into an ante-chapel (the westernmost bay) 20 feet long; the chapel proper 56 feet, and the apsidal sacrarium 15 feet long. It is divided into five bays, including the ante-chapel, which are separated by buttresses of great projection, and well able to support the massive stone vaulting of the roof within. The buttresses are plain beneath, but are richly decorated above the crockets and finials . . . and on each is a niche, intended to be filled with statues gradually as funds shall be provided for the purpose. There is a three-light window, with varied geometrical tracery,, in each bay; the windows of the apse are of two lights, and three of the five are to be filled with stained glass of the richest description, which is now being prepared by the well known artists, Messrs, Clayton and Bell, who are old pupils of Mr Scott. . . . The entrance doorway, with a rich pedimental head and tympanum prepared for carving, is on the south side of the ante-chapel. There are niches in the jambe which are to be filled at once with statuary, &c'. The Civil Engineer and Architects Journal, vol. 22 (1859) 38-39.

The Chapel
The College Chapel was built in the eighteenth century. Dr George Clarke, Henry Keene and James Wyatt were responsible for different stages of its lengthy construction (1720–91), owing to shortage of funds. The interior columns and pilasters, the dome and the delicate foliage plastering are all Wyatt's work. His classical interior was insufficiently emphatic for the tastes of militant Victorian churchmen, and between 1864 and 1866 the chapel was redecorated by William Burges. It is highly unusual and decorative; being predominantly pink, the pews are decorated with carved animals, including kangaroos and whales, and the walls are riotously colourful, and include frescoes of dodos and peacocks. Its stained glass windows were to have been designed by John Everett Millais, but Burges rejected his designs and entrusted the work to Henry Holiday. The Story behind the Easter Egg Pictures

My Mom-mom, whom I love dearly and miss even more, absolutely adored Easter. Bunnies decorated her house year-round, but not the tacky kind, rather, the lovingly hand-painted kind with freakish eyes that follow one around the room. Since she passed away, September 20, 2006, holidays aren't as special to me. They're empty. Easter is difficult, worse than Thanksgiving even, especially since the last two have been crowned with an absolutely beautiful blue sky and gentle breeze. Last year, the sight of the morning beauty caused me to crawl right back into the bed. It wasn't right that she wasn't able to share in the fantastic day, and I wished, for the first and only time in my life, that I wasn't alive that day either. Following that, I threw a royal fit at my in-laws, my husband drove me to the sanctuary of my Mother's house. And in her wisdom, she refrained from saying much of anything but rather, she distracted me. With eggs. She hid eggs for me, a grown 29 year old woman. And it worked, and I will never forget that she did that for me. That act brought me back from the brink.

Enter Easter 2008, and my cousin Jennifer is struggling with her health, more specifically, brain tumors that won't quit her life. The newest development is that she will have to take two new Chemo drugs intravenously. Needless to say, neither of us wanted to freakin' celebrate. But when she called me, just prior to Easter, crying from the other end of the line to tell me her life would NOT be going back to normal but rather it will become more frustrating and painful with Chemo... I didn't say much of anything... I asked her if she wanted me to come down and spend Easter with her. "Do you want me to hide Easter eggs for you?", I asked. "Can we dye real ones?" she asked. Anything for you, I thought.

So my husband & I went to Greensboro and he actually hid the eggs for us this year, allowing me to be distracted for the second beautiful Easter morning since my Mom-mom's passing. My mother contributed 19 plastic eggs with profound quotes in them, so we paused each time we found one and read it aloud to each other. And these are the photos I took to memorialize the situation, to say Thank You to my mother and my husband for helping my cousin and myself deal with ourselves, to remember next year around this time that I can and will make it through another Easter without my Mom-mom, and to preserve what little youth I still possess.

To top it off, the egg wraps that I clearly fell in love with came from Mom-mom's house - circa 1977, same year that I was born.

She is still with me. Jennifer is still strong enough to smile and laugh and be my greatest heroine.

This is my small summation of Easter decorating this year. Since I'm hip-deep in finishing my M.A., and right now studying hard-core for my upcoming Comp Exam, I'm not really doing much to celebrate Easter save a little decorating and making homemade ham & bean soup (since it ~is~ a family tradition to have ham on Easter).

Lacking a mantle in my house, I often decorate my bookcases, so here you can see my few decorations neatly lined up in front of various books (and yes, I think the juxtaposition near the "Housewives Tarot" box is rather amusing). :)

The chicken mug and chick were a gift from Russ. I love the mug is yellow on the inside, just like an egg. :)

This place setting is my own recreation of a place setting used by President Lincoln using my own family heirlooms and authentically-recreated White House china used during the administration of President Abraham Lincoln. As background, Mary Todd Lincoln was renowned for her enjoyment of shopping, thus she selected the Lincoln White House china shortly after her husband's inauguration. An elegant French design, the Lincoln china combines the American eagle with various decorations in a brilliant color called "solferino". This purple-red hue was invented by the French in 1859 and was very popular among the fashionable hosts of the Lincolns' day. President Barack Obama used these replica pieces during his inaugural luncheon on January 20, 2009. This particular set was created by the Woodmere China of New Castle, PA. I made the place card in Old English round or Copperplate hand using authentic White House place cards gilded and embossed in gold. Plate and place card from my private collection.

When I saw this set I knew it had to be in Kirscha's bedroom. The rest of the decor will have an oriental flavour in this room. Some of the 'leather' has to be glued down. I think it got a bit damp and has come unglued. Nothing major. Also all the mirrors still have their protective covers. This will be stunning when the room is finished.

"Rustic Elegance" - Oct. 10, 2009

To reflect the couple's love of outdoors and nature, they planned an elegant, rustic, nature-inspired reception decor and their cake was no exception!
The super simple smooth buttercream was decorated with fresh fall fruits and placed on an AMAZING (very heavy!!) stone slab as a cake stand. I thought this was an outstanding detail that the couple thought of and will be keeping that one in mind! The stone was not fully flat, so the use of dried moss to cushion and fill in lower areas not only took care of that... but added to the natural setting.

Antler Chandeliers

Part of the modern, rustic designer decor. I wonder if it was Biana or Marc's (or did they have an interior designer) idea.

Beside the antlers hanging from the ceiling, there was a deer hunting trophy model that was fitting of the French country house feel. Marc does hunt, I heard stories from Biana that he hunted a bear that was stealing honey from their and neighbours' properties. I've never had bear before! That would be interesting.

there's a division of the Arts & Crafts competition for table decorating... each person comes up with a theme and they are usually pretty interesting. But dang, the judges posted the notes on the table and they are HARSH. For eff's sake, it's a free entry in the county fair! This ain't charm school! Back off!

A sponge cake with whipped cream and fruit is always a perfect idea for a special occasion. The final cake is always my creation, of course.

I use a favorite and very simple sponge cake recipe. I often like to add almond extract along with the vanilla to the batter. I slice the cake and add plain or preferably sweetened and flavoured FRESH whipped cream in the center, then I cover the top and sides. I put sliced fruit in the center and I decorate the top of the cake with more fruit. I have done it with strawberries and other fruits.

Recently asked my mother to do the same cake for my birthday. I told her what I wanted and she did it. I wanted sliced canned (best canned for softness) mangoes with coconut on top. Delicious! My photos of it are not good. That is why I did not yet show my birthday cake.

Geo's Birthday Parcel

Geo's mom called for SOS on this cake. She had baked a simple 9 x 13" cake and wanted to do something special but had no idea how to do it. I told her to come over and taught her how to make a fondant bow and how to decorate with the cake with dots. The finished cake is simple yet sweet and totally doable, even for a newbie.
