Just Tire Locations

Cleveland Road, Wolverhampton, July 1966
A scene from July 1966, and one that has changed beyond recognition. The bus is West Bromwich Corporation number 230, a Daimler CVG6 motor bus with MCCW bodywork that dated from 1960.
230 is pictured standing in Cleveland Road, Wolverhampton, outside St George's Church (to the left out of view), whilst waiting to depart for West Bromwich. To the right of the picture can be seen the tall red bricked side walls of the abattoir, long since demolished and through which part of the modern day Ring Road was built on. I can clearly remember walking with my mother through St George's Church cemetery, as it was a short cut to my grandmothers' house. You could hear the frightened cattle from behind those walls, and as young as I was I knew what was happening in there. It was an awful place and one I wanted to pass by as quickly as possible. It's funny how these things stick in one's mind.
Today, St George's Church still stands, but is now a Sainsbury's supermarket. If a bus were to park at this location now, it would be somewhat in the way, as it would be blocking the supermarkets' car park!
Day 255: Tigger on a Tire
- "Hey, do you have your ODC shot of a tire yet?" Tigger asked me while we were waiting for a bus.
- "No, why?"
- "Why don't I pose in one of those huge bus tires?"
- "But Tigger, that's risky! What if the bus suddenly drives away, then you'll be crushed"
- "No worries! I'll just bounce in and out in a second. Besides, that bus has no driver in it..."
- "OK, be quick! I only have one Tigger!"
So he bounced into one of the holes, I got out my camera as quickly as I could, and took 2 shots.
Now that he's seen the result, he's proud to have had his picture taken in such a unique location like a bus tire...
